Cards on the Table (pt. 2)
A series of post-canon vignettes, each from a different character's point of view. [Part 2/2]
A Faro’s Daughter one-shot collection. Deborah Grantham/Max Ravenscar, with a side of Phoebe Laxton/Adrian Mablethorpe.
[go back to part 1]
6. Lady Mablethorpe
Augusta Laxton surely was the most insufferable woman on earth, Lady Mablethorpe decided as her son finally bundled his affronted mother-in-law into her carriage. Not that she blamed Phoebe, of course – with a mother like that, anyone would sooner take to their bed than receive any visitors, and there was the poor girl’s condition to be considered. If there was one thing Lady Mablethorpe was not willing to tolerate, it was risking the health of her future grandchild – and prospective heir to Mablethorpe, as she cherished the hope – for the sake of such a selfish creature’s greediness and insensitivity.
“I thought she would never leave,” murmured Arabella at her side, heaving a not-precisely-ladylike sigh of relief. As she couldn’t help but agree on the sentiment, if not her niece’s manners, Lady Mablethorpe simply nodded her assent, and turned her attention to her cup of tea.
“I for one am glad to see Adrian standing up for his wife,” Deborah Ravenscar declared, not unreasonably, and if her ladyship hadn’t heard it with her own ears, she would have called anyone a fool who dared to suggest that her nephew was in fact capable of anything as undignified as a snigger. Marriage was doing Max a world of good, she had to admit, and for all that she still congratulated herself on being spared such a dubious connection, she privately had to acknowledge that, gaming house or not, Lady Bellingham’s niece displayed more respectability and sense than many a duke’s daughter.
“I’m terribly sorry you had to bear witness to such a scene,” Adrian apologised presently, and all but collapsed into the nearest chair. “Lady Laxton is – well, you’ve seen. Truth be told, we’re planning to remove to Mablethorpe as soon as Phoebe is well enough to face the trip.”
“I agree that is probably the wisest course of action,” Max considered thoughtfully, relieving his wife of her empty teacup. The new Mrs Ravenscar offered him a quick, warm smile for his troubles, and let him fuss with her shawl with a look of barely concealed amusement.
“Adrian, dear, do you think Phoebe would be willing to receive me, if only for a few moments? I would very much like to offer her my congratulations in person.”
“Oh, I’m sure she won’t mind seeing you, Deb,” was the prompt reply. “She’s ever so fond of you, and with good reason, as you well know.”
If her ladyship had to suppress a wince at this overly familiar form of address between the pair, she was too well-bred to let it show. And as her nephew appeared more than willing to tolerate such liberties from both parties, it was hardly her place to intervene.
“Give our cousin my love,” Arabella prompted sweetly, even as Max stood offering his arm and escorted his wife out of the room in a most attentive manner. Well, this is beyond everything, she thought to herself, and it took her a full minute to finally register the peculiar way her niece-in-law’s dress – sporting a much more conservative cut than she was normally wont to wear – hugged her figure.
“Max, you impossible creature!” she gasped as her nephew resumed his previous place on the settee. “Are you to tell us we ought to congratulate you as well?”
Had the sudden smile gracing his customarily severe countenance not been indication enough, the air of contrived innocence assumed by her niece would have been her answer. It was plain that Arabella was in on her brother’s secret, just as Adrian had been kept in the dark until that very moment.
“You mean – oh Max, and you never said anything! When are we to expect...?”
“Late summer, we believe.”
As her ladyship’s grandchild wasn’t due until early autumn, she was forced to hold back an irrational twinge of resentment – which promptly turned into a gleam of excitement as the full possibilities started to dawn upon her. So absorbed was she in the contemplation of a much desirable closer alliance between their two families that she all but missed her son’s heartfelt congratulations, and was only brought back to the present day by the sardonic look in her nephew’s eye.
“I fear it is incumbent upon me to warn you, ma’am, that I am determined to see any son or daughter of mine married out of choice rather than duty, or any relation’s wishes.”
“Don’t be absurd, Max,” she chided him, deeply irritated that her secret hopes should be so openly addressed, and just as callously dismissed.
“No child of mine will be induced into matrimony by anything but the deepest of loves,” Adrian declared with an air of affronted dignity, eliciting a startled giggle from his young cousin – who was well enough informed of the circumstances accompanying the sudden transferral of his affections from one lady to another, her aunt reflected gloomily.
Still, Lady Mablethorpe consoled herself reflecting that nothing prevented one of her future grandchildren from falling in love with one among her nephew’s offspring, and she would be there to help things along if she had any say in the matter.
7. Christopher Grantham
“Mr Grantham, what a pleasant surprise! Have you come to visit your sister?”
The gentleman in question shut his eyes briefly, and valiantly set out to ignore the small pang of longing in his chest. Arabella Ravenscar was as lovely a vision as ever in her walking dress and bonnet, and he was faced with the sudden impulse to run up the stairs and gather her in his arms. Only the painful memories of the lady’s inconstancy in her affections stopped him from acting on such an impulse, and he remembered himself in time to bow deeply as she passed him by.
“Indeed I am, Miss Ravenscar,” he replied politely, quickly averting his gaze. “Permit me to wish you a very good day.”
When he was finally admitted to his sister’s presence, Kit Grantham was still so preoccupied with his own thoughts that he didn’t immediately notice the hustle and bustle of servants, as if they were in the middle of packing their mistress’ belongings for an imminent journey.
“Are you going out of town?” he ventured to enquire at length, and was met with a tinkle of laughter from his dearest sister.
“I’m sure I explained it all to you in my last letter, Kit,” she shook her head, apparently amused. “Max and I agreed that Chamfreys would be a great deal more comfortable for my confinement.”
That finally prompted his gaze to drop to her stomach, and he couldn’t refrain from widening his eyes at the sight he was met with. His sister was – huge, there were no two ways about it, and for the first time in his life he actually stopped to consider such an uncomfortable topic as childbearing, and how it might affect any and all females of his acquaintance.
“And are you – I mean to say, is everything – oh, don’t make me say it, Deb, I beg of you.”
His sister took pity on him, and offered him a sympathetic smile. “We are both as well as can be expected, and I’m positive your nephew or niece is eager to meet you, when the time comes.”
“I’m sure I have no idea how ladies are so willing to put themselves through any of this,” he blurted out, immediately blushing at his own forwardness. “Oh, forget I said anything, I’m all out of sorts this morning.”
Deb considered him for a long moment. “Did you by any chance happen to run into my dear sister as she was preparing to go out for her walk in the park?”
He let out a rueful sigh, twisting his gloves in his hands. “I was so sure of her, Deb, I still cannot conceive how she had it in herself to deceive me so.”
“Oh, Kit, I know for a fact she didn’t mean to, but she’s so very young, and more than a little spoilt besides. I hope with time to have more of a good influence on her, and I’m so very sorry you had to suffer because of this – but let me be blunt and assure you that the two of you would not have suited in the slightest, and it is much wiser to take the time to get better acquainted with your prospective partner for life before setting your heart irrevocably on them.”
Kit Grantham turned a mildly reproachful gaze on his elder sister. “Deb, by your own admission you and Ravenscar had only been acquainted for two weeks before he proposed, and you weren’t even in town for one of those same weeks.”
Deborah laughed. “That’s true, but I would hardly call ours an ordinary courtship, and you said yourself that we must have been both out of our senses to even consider marriage after I had him locked in our cellar.”
“Utterly and completely mad,” he nodded with conviction, though deep down he was quite in awe of how noticeably happy his sister had been since becoming Mrs Ravenscar. Perhaps there was still hope for him after his disappointment, after all.
Once he’d kissed his sister goodbye and presented her with his most sincere wishes for a smooth confinement, he left the house in Grosvenor Square with a spring in his step, and the first glimmer of hope that he might, one day, procure the same kind of happiness for himself.
8. Miss Ravenscar
“Arabella, my dear, how can you forget your manners so?” her mother complained weakly after her as she rushed up the stairs, and all but barged into her brother’s study unannounced.
“Good day to you, Belle,” Max greeted her with intolerable composure, gathering the documents spread in front of him into a neat pile. “I trust you had a pleasant journey?”
“Max, how could you be so unbearably reticent in that note of yours? You must tell me everything, at once!”
“Why, I thought I had been perfectly clear,” he demurred, yet she could clearly see the corners of his lips trembling into the beginnings of a smile. “Both mother and child are perfectly well, and they are currently resting – or at least, they were doing so when I left them, not half an hour ago.”
“Max!” she glared at him in frustration. “Am I the aunt to a little boy, or a girl?”
“Always so impatient,” he shook his head, and stood up. “You are aware, I’m sure, that the proper thing for us to do is to go downstairs, and share the announcement with your affectionate mother.”
“You know very well you don’t care a fig for propriety, and as for Mama, I’m positive she will survive. It’s not as if she’s the child’s grandmother – not really, anyway.”
“And thank heavens for that,” she heard him murmur under his breath, and gave him a hard pinch in retaliation. “Now, if you think you can behave yourself for longer than two minutes at a time, it would be my pleasure to introduce you to the new addition to our family party.”
Mollified by the prospect, she slipped her hand into the crook of his arm, and offered him a most demure smile. “I will be on my best behaviour, I promise.”
In short order, she was introduced into her sister-in-law’s bedchamber, greeted her with a kiss on her exceptionally pale cheek, and couldn’t refrain from taking hold of both of her hands and questioning her at length about her ordeal.
“Do not fret yourself so, my dear,” Deborah reassured her warmly, patting her on the arm. “It is not so very bad, and you will see for yourself how the blessing that comes of is well worth the pain.”
Arabella cast an extremely dubious glance at her pallid complexion and the look of utter exhaustion about her countenance. Still, Deborah’s eyes were sparkling with barely restrained joy, and she could hardly miss the brightness of her smile when the nurse strode in with her charge in her arms.
“My dearest sister, I would like you to meet your new nephew, Adrian,” Max announced, with no small amount of pride in his voice. Her breath caught in her throat as she took in the delicate features of the sleeping infant’s face, his miniature hands curled in small fists around a corner of his blanket.
“He’s so tiny,” she breathed out in wonderment, extending a finger to trace the contours of one diminutive fist. “Did you say his name is – Adrian? Does our cousin know?”
“Not at present, though it will be our pleasure to inform him as soon as he visits, like he promised,” her brother smiled, his eyes searching for Deborah’s. “He is after all the reason why we met in the first place, and I cannot think of a better way to honour his – most unwitting – role in bringing us together.”
“Oh, but you must prepare yourselves, Mama will be most disappointed that you didn’t choose our late father’s name for the child,” Arabella said ruefully. “I wish I could talk her out of it, I really do, but you know her, Max.”
“I do,” Max nodded with a great deal of forbearance, and took hold of his infant son with such an air of practiced ease that had his sister most surprised. “Now, we shall go downstairs and introduce the little one to Olivia, thus sparing my darling wife the trial of being faced with my stepmother’s complaints until she’s well on her way to recovery.”
“That’s most considerate of you, dear husband,” Deborah laughed, her gaze lingering on the child with such undisguised tenderness that Arabella found herself wondering what it would be like, one day, to hold her own son or daughter in her arms.
9. Phoebe Mablethorpe (née Laxton)
Young Lady Mablethorpe quietly studied her husband as he leaned over the bassinet with an expression of pure rapture on his handsome face. He looked ever so pleased with their newborn daughter, and yet, she couldn’t seem to put her mother’s rather uncomplimentary speech out of her mind.
“Oh, Adrian,” she whispered timidly, walking up to his side. “I’m sorry I couldn’t do my duty and provide you with an heir. I promise it will be a son next time.”
The sudden, horrified look on her husband’s face gave her pause, and she didn’t even think to resist when he gathered her in his arms quite abruptly.
“Phoebe, how can you speak so! I find I have no words to express how much I love our little Deb, and I wouldn’t want to trade her for anything in the world, do you hear me?”
“I do,” she nodded meekly, hiding her face into his waistcoat. “It’s just, Mama says that – ”
His arms tightened around her, and she felt him press a fierce kiss on top of her head. “Dearest, I hate to speak ill of your mother, you know I do, but the truth is, you ought not listen to a word she says when it comes to such matters.”
“I’m sorry,” she apologised at once, nestling further into his embrace. “And I do love our daughter so, I hate to think she will be looked down by our families until I can bear you a son.”
Adrian chuckled, and placed a gentle finger under her chin. “Well, my mother for one is positively delighted with her granddaughter, if only because she’s already forming some serious designs for her to marry into the Ravenscar fortune. And you know how pleased our cousins are that we named her after Deborah.”
“I will never allow my daughter to be forced into matrimony against her will,” Phoebe declared with unshakable conviction, all but suppressing a shudder at the horrific memories of her parents explaining in no uncertain terms how it was her precise duty to accept, and even encourage, Sir James Filey’s suit. “Oh, Adrian, I don’t know what would have become of me, if you and Deborah hadn’t come to my rescue at Vauxhall Gardens.”
Her husband kissed her very tenderly, his fingers coming to rest at her cheek. “You don’t need to worry about that anymore. And I thank my lucky star that I found the most delightful companion for my life that night.”
Her heart swelling with joy, she found she had no room left to tie herself in knots over the past. And if their daughter chose to break the moment by making her presence known quite forcefully, that was surely her prerogative; as a new mother, she found she could hardly begrudge her child anything, let alone this.
10. Lucius Kennet
Strolling into the house in Berkley Square after an urgent summoning from Lady Bellingham, Mr Kennet was more than a little surprised to be welcomed by her ladyship rather than one of the servants.
“Oh, thank God you’re here, Lucius,” Lady Bellingham proclaimed in a most agitated manner, clutching at her vinaigrette. “My poor nerves are in such a state, I swear I don’t know what to do with myself. Oh, to think that I should live to see the day – but I daresay I won’t, I can feel my spasms coming already.”
“Calm yourself, ma’am,” he urged her, not particularly moved by such a declaration. “And start from the beginning, if you please.”
“Foolish, headstrong girl! She says she shall never see him again, and he’s such a proud creature he will undoubtedly divorce her – we shall all be ruined, and there’s that poor child to be considered, it doesn’t even bear thinking!”
“I’m willing to bet any sum of your choosing that it won’t come to that, ma’am,” he replied with a considerable deal of amusement, earning a reproachful look from the respectable matron.
“I wish you would take this seriously, Lucius. You know very well how Deb is – she refuses to be reasoned with, and now she’s locked herself in one of the rooms upstairs, and she declares she won’t leave even if her husband comes here on his knees all the way from Grosvenor Square and begs for her forgiveness.”
Mr Kennet looked out of the window just in time to spot a carriage bearing the Ravenscar crest stopping in front of the house, and grinned in anticipation of a most diverting scene. “As to that, we shall have to wait and see,” he winked at her ladyship, and went to answer the door himself.
Ravenscar looked momentarily startled at his presence, but was quick to regain his composure, and barely deigned him with a contemptuous glance as he pushed past him and went straight for Lady Bellingham.
“I need to see my wife most urgently, ma’am,” the man gritted out between his teeth, his hat half crushed in his grip. “I beg you to give me leave to seek her out for myself.”
“And what makes you believe she’s here, hmm?” Lucius drawled from the entrance, his arms crossed in open defiance of Ravenscar’s wishes. If he knew his gentleman, he had more than half an idea of where all this was going, and he was determined to have his fun in the meantime.
“I would advise you to stay out of this, Kennet, or I won’t be held responsible for my actions.”
“Gentlemen, if you please,” cried out Lady Bellingham, reaching with trembling fingers for her smelling salts. “My niece is indeed upstairs, Sir, and I would lead you to her myself if I thought that would answer. I’m afraid nothing will serve while she’s in one of her tantrums, and I do declare she will be the death of me one day, but what can one do?”
As her ladyship looked perilously close to drop in a dead faint, Mr Kennet stepped forward to help her to the nearest chaise. The two gentlemen exchanged a tense look across the room, until Lucius eventually relented and nodded in the direction of the stairs.
“I’ll take care of the lady, you go upstairs and set our darling Deb to rights,” he smirked, feeling quite sure that, had Ravenscar not had way more pressing matters to attend, he would have happily knocked half the teeth out of his mouth.
It was nigh on half an hour later when Lady Bellingham came back fully to her senses, helped along by a glass of good Burgundy, and promptly resumed her gloomy predictions about the future.
“Think of the scandal, Lucius! I dismissed the servants as soon as I figured what Deb was up to, but I fear by then it was too late. And it can’t be helped anyway, if they’re set to have a breach, which looks more and more inevitable, and – oh, Lucius, they’re fully capable of murdering one another when they’re both in a rage, and where will that leave us?”
“If you have a little more patience, ma’am, you will see for yourself how everything will turn out for the best,” he hastened to reassure her, and indeed, he was soon proven right by the abrupt reappearance of Mr and Mrs Ravenscar, both of them looking oddly flushed, and more than a little sheepish besides.
“Not one word,” Deborah warned him as he took in their rumpled appearances, from his hastily rearranged cravat to the way her curls tumbled freely around her shoulders.
“Wouldn’t dream of it,” he grinned, and poured himself a glass of wine. “I shall drink to your future happiness, my darling.”
Deborah blushed most endearingly, and turned her attention to the afflicted matron. “Dearest Aunt Lizzie, we’re very sorry for causing you such an unreasonable amount of trouble. With your permission, we shall be on our way presently.”
“Oh, go away, you impossible creature,” her aunt waved her off feebly. “Both of you.”
Ravenscar looked as embarrassed as he ever was, which was in itself most diverting. “My apologies, ma’am,” he bowed, somewhat uncomfortably, and offered his arm to his wife.
“Faith, if young Master Adrian doesn’t get a new playfellow within the next twelvemonth, then I’m not Lucius Kennet,” he laughed under his breath, and tossed off his wine.

Anna x reader - my friend
Sitting at the table in the servants hall, you weren’t paying much attention to anything really, you were staring at the book in your lap, but you weren’t reading.
No, you hadn’t been reading for a while, you just stared at the pages and a few people had picked up on the fact you were just sat there lost in your own world.
“Sometimes I wonder if she’s well in the head.” Thomas said.
“Don’t be nasty.” Mr Bates snapped.
“What, it’s not normal for someone to just sit there staring like that.”
Mr Bates glared at Thomas, and he went back to reading the paper and Mr Bates looked at you a little confused.
“(Y/N)?” He asked.
You snapped your head up to him and gave him a warm smile.
“Yes Mr Bates?”
“Is everything alright?”
“Oh yes of course.”
You picked up your book and set it on the table as you stood up, excusing yourself to go do some work you needed to get done.
Sitting in the boot room, you began polishing some shoes, and you flicked your gaze up as the door opened.
“Oh (Y/N), could you help me with something?” Anna asked.
“Of course.”
Getting up you followed her and she showed you the problem she was trying to solve but didn’t have enough time to do it.
“I simply can’t repair it in time.”
“I can help, you take one end I’ll take the other.”
You grabbed your sewing kit and sat at one end and Anna did the same on the other side, and you both began to work.
“Do you have anything planned for your half day tomorrow?” She asked.
“No, I think I’m just going to sit upstairs.”
“Oh, really?”
You nodded your head and glanced at her before you went back to fixing the large sheet.
“Do you not want to the village? Or somewhere else? A walk maybe?”
You shook your head.
“No, I think I would prefer to just sit upstairs for a while.”
“Is everything okay?”
“Of course yes.” You smiled.
Anna stopped and looked at you.
“You know if you ever need help or someone to talk to I’m here for you.”
“Thank you, but it needn’t be necessary, I’m good, really.”
You beamed at her and went back to working, and when you were both finished you took it upstairs and you helped her put it back in the table.
You adjusted your end slightly and stood back, tilting your head.
“Does it look right?” Anna asked.
“Yes, it’s perfect.”
You headed to the door and stepped aside when it was opened.
“Anna? (Y/N)?” Lord Grantham asked.
“I’m sorry my lord, we were just putting the cover back on the table. It’s been mended.” Anna said.
“I see thank you both, actually I was wondering if maybe one of you two could help with one of our guests, she hasn’t got a ladies maid with her and needs assistance.”
“I would be glad to my Lord.” You smiled.
“Thank you, wait in the hall with Carson.”
“Very good my lord.”
You walked over and stood next to Mr Carson, and he looked down at you.
“Why are you up here?” He asked.
“I’m acting as ladies maid for one of the guests.”
“I see, and you have done this before?”
“Yes Mr Carson, I’ve acted as ladies maid before I know what I’m doing.”
“Very well.”
Carson walked over to the door to answer it, Thomas stood next to you and you smiled as you waited, but when you saw who it was your smile fell from your face.
The woman stopped and she looked at you and you looked at her back.
“I see you found a job then.” She said coldly.
“Yes my lady, I have.”
She looked around and Lady Cora walked over.
“Lady Grace, what a pleasure to see you.” Lady Cora smiled.
Lady Grace smiled back and turned her attention away from you.
“And Lady Cora, but I wonder if I may have a different Ladies maid.”
“Oh, is there something wrong with (Y/N)?”
Lady grace looked at you.
“Yes. Everything is wrong with her. She is ungrateful, and disloyal.”
Lady Cora looked at you and you said nothing in response, you simply just stood there jaw clenched as you stared ahead.
“(Y/N)?” Lady Cora asked.
You looked at her and smiled.
“Yes my lady?”
“Is this true? Do you know lady grace?”
“I do my lady yes.”
“Don’t sound so disgusted by that (Y/N), it’s not ladylike.” Lady grace spat.
You looked at her.
“I’m not a lady.”
“Don’t take that tone with me.” She warned, “I’ve had enough of your childish games, you are to return at once.”
“No.”
“(Y/N)!” Lord Grantham snapped.
You clasped your hands in front of you.
“You always were ungrateful, spiteful, horrid little brat. I suppose it’s not to late to make a decent lady out of you yet. Now, stop playing servant and come home.”
“No.”
“Excuse me?”
Lady grace stood in front of you glaring.
“You will come home.”
“I will not, if I remember correctly I was disowned by you. Therefore, that is not my home and you have no right to tell me to come back, especially as I am an adult and can decide for myself.”
“You should be honoured you were born with such privilege!” She hissed.
That was the final straw.
“Privilege of what?! You to dictate my life? Marry me off to some horrid old man just so you can have more money? The privilege of being locked in a dark, damp room because I refuse to be your little puppet and do what you want me to do?”
She brought a hand out and slapped you across the face.
“That is enough!” Lord Grantham yelled.
“You’re right my Lord, it is. I apologise.”
You turned back to the woman who had slapped you.
“Goodnight mother, I will send a different ladies maid up for you.”
With that you walked away, jaw clenched, hands balled into the fabric of your dress as you went downstairs.
“Mrs Hughes, there’s a Lady Grace upstairs who needs a ladies maid, I can’t I am feeling unwell.”
“I see, thank you. Go upstairs and I’ll come check on you later.”
You nodded and went upstairs to your room, changing, you got into bed, and you just sighed heavily.
Laying down, you decided to just close your eyes and hide away from the world like you did every time things got too much for you.
You weren’t sleeping, so when you heard your door open you knew someone had come in, but you never moved, you pretended to be asleep.
“(Y/N)?” Mrs Hughes called softly.
You didn’t respond.
“I believe she’s asleep my lady, should I wake her?” Mrs Hughed asked.
“No, I’ll come back in the morning, thank you.”
The door was closed and you were left alone but not for long, because someone else came in and closed the door.
You heard some shuffling about and someone place their hand on your shoulder.
“I know you’re not asleep.. are you alright…?” Anna whispered.
You carried on pretending and she sighed softly.
“Alright, but if you want to talk I’m here.”
With that, she got into her own bed.
You fell asleep not long later, and in the morning you changed and went downstairs for breakfast and stood as you waited for Mr Carson to sit.
When he did you sat down as well.
“So, are we to call you by her ladyship as well?” Thomas asked.
“Thomas.” Mrs Hughed scolded.
“Just curious, (Y/N)s from a prestigious family, surely she has the title too.”
You looked up at him and said nothing.
“Are we too good for you now my lady?” He smirked.
“That is enough!” Mr Carson snapped.
The table went quiet, and when Mr Carson left a few others did and you sat back down.
“So, did you runaway? Were you kicked out? Did you just want to play servant?”
“Leave it alone Thomas.” Mrs Patmore said.
She handed you some tea and left the room.
“Is that why you’re so strange? Because she locked you in a dark and damp room?”
Everyone fell silent and you slowly stood up.
“Excuse me, I don’t feel well.” You said.
With that, you walked away and back upstairs, just wanting to hide from everything, and that’s what you did.
Like a young child who was scared and afraid, you got back into bed, and pulled the cover over your head so you could hide away from the world.
The door was opened and closed.
“(Y/N)?”
You pulled the covers down and slowly sat up, swinging your legs over the edge of the bed.
“How can I help my lady?” You asked.
Lady Cora slowly sat on Anna’s bed, and she smiled softly at you.
“I came to see if you were alright after yesterday.”
“That’s very kind of you my lady but I’m alright.”
“Are you really?”
You nodded your head.
“Lady Grace went on a rampage last night, shouting and yelling about you, and she admitted to doing many things. Lord Grantham told her to leave at once and never come back or to contact you or he should have her arrested.”
“I see…”
“My only fear is that Barrow was there, and we all know what he’s like.”
“He can tell everybody if he wants, it won’t change the outcome of anything my lady.”
“The outcome of what?”
“I’m handing in my notice, I will work until the end and leave immediately after.”
“You don’t have to go.” She said softly.
You sighed a little.
“I have been dishonest about my reasoning for coming to be a servant, I have lied, and I have cause you trouble. I must go.”
“You are a victim of a cruel past, but if you feel you must leave we can’t stop you from going, all I can offer is a perfect reference and a place to come back to should you need it.”
“Thank you my lady.”
Lady Cora stood up and she looked at you as you stood up, walking to open the door for her.
“Please think about this over the next few days, take some time, rest, and think carefully about this. I’ll talk to Mrs Hughes and Mr Carson about giving you the time.”
“Thank you my lady.”
Once she left you closed the door and got back into bed, back under the cover to hide away again.
You laid there all morning, and Anna brought up your lunch, setting the tray next to your bed she reached out and pulled the cover down a little.
You looked at her, and she smiled softly.
“Eat.” She said.
You sat up and she gave you the tray but you didn’t eat, you just looked at the food.
Anna sighed.
“Thomas told us everything that happened after you left last night.”
“I’ve no doubt he did, he enjoys making people as miserable as him.”
“Ignore him, he’s not worth the worry.”
You glanced at Anna.
“I’m not worried, he can talk all he wants, but he does not know all the details so he does not know the whole story, and if he did, perhaps he would be so snarky about the whole thing.”
You set the tray next to your bed and you covered yourself back up with your covers.
“I wish you’d speak me.” Anna sighed.
“What’s there to say?” You mumbled.
“Tell me about everything, what happened, how you feel. So you don’t have to face this alone.”
You sat up again.
“There’s nothing to say Anna, my mother was a cruel woman who despised me for some reason, I ran away the moment I could and after that she disowned me. I came here and I’ve been a servant since.”
“There’s more to that story, but I won’t force you. When you’re ready come and talk to me.”
She gave you a smile and left you alone with your lunch.
A few people came to see you, to try and talk to you but you never spoke to any of them.
You sat in your own sadness and pain, letting it slowly take over you.
You spent the rest of the day and the following day in bed, and that evening you slowly got up, and you made your way downstairs.
Into the servants hall and over next to Anna.
“Do you want some tea?” She asked.
You shook your head, and you took a deep breath.
“I… spent my childhood learning how to act as I was supposed to, doing anything that was asked of me to try and make everybody happy. I would close my eyes to hide from the darkness, because if I could not see, it couldn’t be real.”
You sighed a little.
Everybody stopped what they were doing to listen.
“It was a rather childish notion I know, and I still believe that if I close my eyes I can make all the darkness go away, pretend it isn’t real. But it can’t. I am happy here, but I disappoint myself in everything I do, I disappoint my father and even my own mother couldn’t stand me.”
Anna reached out, placing her hand on your shoulder.
“I wanted to leave, so I did. I wanted to disappear, so I did. I make things worse, and all I do is run away, from family, friends, anything good or bad I second guess it all and I runaway, because it’s all I know how to do. To run away…”
“You don’t have to runaway anymore.” Anna said softly.
You looked at her, tears brimming your eyes.
“I feel like I’m stuck… and nothing I do can get me away from that life…”
Anna stood up and she hugged you.
“I hope we can help you get away from that life, so you can build a new one.” She whispered.
You sniffled a little bit.
“Whatever May happen, you have us all by your side.” Mrs Hughes smiled.
You nodded your head and pulled away from the hug, taking the handkerchief of Mr Bates so you could wipe your tears away.
“I just wanted to hide…”
“Running away will only get you so far, eventually, one day, you have to come to terms with what’s happened.” Thomas said.
You looked at him.
“Some inspiration from the heartless Thomas Barrow, even he must be concerned.” Mr Carson said.
Everyone laughed softly and Thomas huffed, going back to his paper.
“No matter what happens we are your family, whether you’re in service, or you become a marvellous lady of many riches.” Anna smiled.
You smiled back and took your hand, giving it a squeeze.
“I would never choose that life over this one, I prefer this. I like my friends.”
You turned to face Anna and you hugged her gently, and she hugged you back.
“Thank you for being my friend…” you whispered

Dem Bones… Kit Bagge ran Little Tittweaking’s only remaining body repair shop. He had inherited the business from his grandfather Hans Bagge who’d become one of the last ‘charnel children’ to leave Leicestershire after the Bone Persecutions of the 1920s. Grandpa Hans had what was considered to be the finest collection of Stately Bones this side of Grantham. Amongst these skeletal examples there…

Sharkchaser Designer Victoria Grantham On Why You Can Wear Bucket Bags Forever, Plus The Best Ones To Shop

Sharkchaser Designer Victoria Grantham On Why You Can Wear Bucket Bags Forever, Plus The Best Ones To Shop
A SHARKCHASER bucket bag
Thanks to their explosion in popularity a few years ago, bucket bags might seem like a modern invention. But the style actually dates back to 1932 when the Noé bag was created by Gaston-Louis Vuitton to safely carry champagne without breaking the bottles. The Noé had a wide, sturdy base to hold the weight and the drawstring closure cleverly tightened the bottles into a bunch to prevent them from clanking around. That explains why bucket bags are surprisingly spacious. Since then, many designers and fashion houses have put their stamp on this iconic and timeless silhouette for nearly a century.
That includes Sharkchaser, a leather handbag brand founded in 2019 by Victoria Grantham. “I think bucket bags have always been a classic, super functional and glamorous at the same time,” Grantham says. That’s why the classic shape is a constant throughout her collection. What makes Sharkchaser’s bucket bags different is what’s on the inside. Crafted in Italy from fine calf-skin leathers, each bag has a specifically placed special lining made with one of the most powerful EMF shielding fabrics out there, as it’s 99% effective. “There was no product on the market that combined a creative contemporary design with wellness and sustainability,” Grantham says. “I wanted a bag that would shield me from the radiation emitting from my cell phone when I carried it close to my body. I wanted a bag with excellent quality of design and make, as well as high quality sustainably produced materials that also allowed me to carry my cell phone with peace of mind. Technology is part of our lives—I love my phone; I just want to live with it in a healthier way.”
Even the brand name is a nod to protection. “Shark Chaser” repellent was a survival kit first issued by the US Navy and Air Force during World War II. When they fell into the water, it would release a substance comprised of copper salts and dye in a large cloth tea bag that would protect them from shark attacks. “I have always referenced military garments and accessories in my menswear as they have a beautiful balance of good, honest design, materials and functionality,” Grantham says. “And last but not least, I have a particular fascination and love of sharks. I love nature and I wanted a name that connected everything in reference to the fact that we are all connected in this world!”
Bags by SHARKCHASER
Even Sharkchaser’s bucket bags take inspiration from military uniforms. “The bubble came from a cotton French military helmet bag,” Grantham says. “I also look to everyday objects, then make them luxury in materials and construction—I love that juxtaposition. The final design comes from thinking about its function and purpose; good design is naturally sustainable and functional. I have a particular affinity for the bucket bag because aside from being completely functional, it has an inherent ease and chicness to it. The nature of the style offers itself to different proportions and occasions; I love that dynamic and versatility.”
The sleek lines and architectural details featured in Sharkchaser are inspired by Grantham’s training. She received a master’s degree from the Royal College of Art in London in menswear while training alongside Saville Row tailors. Her first job was at Donna Karan collection menswear in the early 90’s, then she moved to Paris for the role of head of menswear at Louis Vuitton, working for Marc Jacobs at the launch of RTW. Since then, she has worked for various luxury as well as contemporary brands in New York, Milan, Japan and Paris. “I loved the techniques and craft of menswear, pushing the boundaries from classicism into fashion,” Grantham says. “Everything I learned in menswear has been applied to everything I do since it is about understanding and respecting craft and technique and then challenging it. Menswear is about a perfect balance between design and purpose, make and material, value and functionality, and I apply this to Sharkchaser now.”
Being an eco-conservationist is at the heart of everything Grantham creates. Every purchase is shipped in a box using 100% recycled and sustainable materials. “Sharkchaser is the first and only luxury accessory brand that is built on three core principals of design, wellness and sustainability in one product,” Grantham says. “We believe all these aspects are connected and must be represented. It’s about good design which is everything.”
Since options abound when it comes to bucket bags, there are a few things to keep in mind when shopping for one. “Get the right size for you,” advises Grantham. “It needs to be light and have all the right pockets, not too many, just the right ones, and make sure it’s made from sustainable materials.” To narrow it down, I’ve rounded up the best bucket bags that will be a staple in your closet forever.

Every week, The Guardian publishes The Knowledge, a round-up of fascinating football facts based on readers’ questions. Here are some interesting stories from the archives.
head bone’s connected to the...
If you ever needed to know the highest scoring match where all goals scored were headers, look no further. Internationals wise, England’s 3-0 thump of Scotland were all headers. Leicester City beat Derby County 4-0 in 1998 with no-brainers - one of them, fairly, was Emile Heskey - but none can hold a candle to Oxford United, who in their 6-0 hammering of Shrewsbury in 1996 did it with their heads (not shoulders, knees and toes).
back bone’s connected to the...
Sometimes, even when you're at home, they'll take the shirt off your back. UEFA used to have a rule where the home team would change kit in the event of a clash in the Champions' League. Arsenal fell afoul of this when they hosted Sparta Prague and had to wear their third kit, but ended up changing it at half time because it was too similar to Sparta's maroon. Reading also had to change to their away kit despite playing at home because of a clash against Stevenage's, Cork City and Dundalk both changed shirts at half time because of heavy rain, but it's to Witton Albion that the award goes, as they lost to Grantham Town having worn three shirts in 90 minutes.
hand bone’s connected to the...
Goalkeepers can come in handy on both sides of the pitch, especially before 1912, where rules allowed goalkeepers to handle the ball all the way to the halfway line. Somewhat more recently, both Jose Luis Chilavert and Jorg Butt have scored and saved a penalty in the same game - Chilavert in 1999 against Independiente, while Butt scored and saved one in Hamburg’s 3-1 victory over Schalke. Butt even ended up top-scorer with nine goals for that season. Interestingly enough, Niall Quinn, as striker, had already scored for Manchester City against Derby in 1991. Without a goalkeeper on the bench and with Tony Coton sent off, Quinn stepped in between the posts - and promptly made a penalty save against Dean Saunders.

Work experience questions
For the client project I worked with an independent business that my family run from Grantham called Firefoods. In order to secure this client I emailed them and went to their workplace to speak to them personally as I have good connections with them. Even though my client was my dad I had to act professional and do it the proper way instead of unprofessional. I was professional by emailing him and speaking in a professional manner at times where it was appropriate. I preferred it this way as it was good practice for other clients.
They wanted shots of each product with an asthetic background which is natural and raw and shows what is in each product. The experience helped me develop professionally and personally because it made me see how it is to work for an actual business with deadlines, rules and time management. Some challenges I faced for example was the lighting kit as it didn't work with my products by making the reflections too clear and white where as the natural light worked perfect. I also had to change locations as I was inside but preferred the atmosphere and lighting outside more.
Throughout my photography lifetime I have also worked for a wedding business and helped them do a wedding shoot for a magazine and got my behind the scene shots on their website and also on the designers instagram. I also did other work for the client I did the last project on and they put those photos on their website. The skills I have acquired throughout these experiences are people skills, writing skills and also how to follow a brief word for word. These skills have helped me develop my portfolio as I managed to chose the best photos that business would be interested in and also how to talk about them and why I took them. They have also helped me get out there more and how to tell people what I do and why I do it therefore helping me get work and get into university.

The Real Estate Conversation
The Real Estate Conversation
There has never been a better time for first home buyers and would-be investors to buy a house in Darwin, according to CoreLogic data. Darwin's declining population is weighing on the property market, Quentin Kilian, chief executive of the REINT, told SCHWARTZWILLIAMS. The Darwin real estate market has bottomed, so local owners should feel less pressure to take the first offer that comes along, says Glenn Grantham, general manager, Raine & Horne Darwin. Elaine Mills speaks to SCHWARTZWILLIAMS about the innovations she has introduced in her business, including employing virtual assistants in the Philippines to do the administration for her property managers. Karl Secondis of One Real Estate, Darwin, has been a successful agent for more than 20 years.
The "negative gearing" of investment properties is not well understood by the general public, and I also tend to think that most residential investment properties in Australia, are not negative geared for taxation purposes. They are purchased to provide positive income, investment, and security for the future. It seems that some of the aged persons over 65, that are not collecting an aged pension, are the ones that own residential investment property. Negatively geared, not on your life. In many locations through-out Australia the capital growth of property is quite low, so owning a rental property that is rented at a loss becomes a liability. Every year, there will be business' that run at a loss, and it would be virtually impossible to identify an "intentional loss for taxation purposes". The ownership of investment properties is with-out doubt, one of the prime sources of "intense jealousy" between various people within the Australian community. This is probably why the issue of "negative gearing" of property has become so intense.
Every year Forbes publishes the list of the richest people in Australia. 2009 showed a drop in the number of billionaires (we're down to 9) but despite the changes in the economy these entrepreneurs proved that fortunes can still be made. Almost everyone on the list started out with a small venture that eventually flourished with dedication and a mind-set to defy the odds against making it big. They are an inspiration to Australians everywhere with dreams of success to hold their course and just keep going. 590 million at the age of 84? Mr. Alter landed on the shore in 1949 right out of Poland and hurried up to get a job, 2 jobs as a matter of fact. A bit later he bought a couple shops and a bank near Melbourne. Yes, that's right - a bank!
Currently his son, Sam runs his Pacific Shopping Centers and manages his portfolio of prime retail properties in the vicinity of Melbourne and Adelaide. This wealthy Oz tycoon likes things that give you a buzz. He started out on the path to fortune as a coffee farmer but really made himself known with the Rosemount Estates winery. In 2001 he sold off the entire kit and caboodle for cash and stock to Southcorp. He turned around in 2003 and flipped the stick to Foster's as a means to buy Hamilton Island. He has taken the cup in the Hobart-to-Sydney race 4 consecutive years with his yacht, Wild Oats.
He keeps himself occupied with exporting his name-brand wines to the U.S. This sister and brother team was fortunate to have a father that discovered some tremendous iron ore deposits in Western Australia. Rio Tinto's Hamersley mine provides them and other family members annual royalties. Wright's primary concern is his Voyager Estate winery. Rumor has it that as a teenager Mr. Van Lieshout left school to work at a job unloading bananas. After moving from his native Holland he eventually started up the Super A-Mart furniture chain which he sold in 2006. Currently he is in the market for Brisbane real estate. Len Buckeridge is synonymous with BGC Group, a major home builder in Western Australia.
200 million private port. 600 million. He stirred up some scandalous talk when accused of making payments in secret to a Queensland politician. He denies the bad news. Mr. Harvey started dropped out of agricultural college to sell vacuum cleaners door-to-door. He later co-founded Harvey Norman, the electronics retailer. The CEO is his wife, Katie Page. He is a horse man, with a stake in the thoroughbred auction house, Magic Millions. 200 million. The return on the flagship fund has been 11% annualized. Mr. Perron sold handkerchief boxes after dropping out of school and later tried to make a go as a plumber. Australian Investment Properties didn't really make it big until being gifted with a Toyota franchise from a former boss. He established dealerships all over Western Australia and now invests in real estate.
Fox is a former pro in the Australian Football League and got started on his way to wealth by selling soft drinks from a truck. He founded the largest logistics company in Australia: Linfox. He enjoys classic cars - has 130 of them. Stokes is the primary dealer of Caterpillar equipment in Australia. He adds to his fortune by his stake in media group, Seven Network. Lately he has been attempting to grab up Perth's Western Australia Newspapers. Originally from South Africa, Neilson set up Platinum Asset Management in 1993 with George Soros backing him. 500 million. His next plan is to open a contemporary Chinese art museum. Along with other family members she benefits from her late father's mining assets: Rio Tinto's Hamersley Basin Iron Ore Mine.
Rinehart also owns a direct stake in the family company Hancock Prospecting. Pratt was at one time a McKinsey consultant and ran Visy Industries U.S. 20 years. He is now co-chairs the packaging kingdom with his mother, owned in entirety by his family. He co-owns the global operations with his two sisters. 1 richest person in 2008. Sadly he lost his position due to decreasing iron ore demand which affected shares of his Fortescue Metals Group. A Chinese steel group recently took ownership of part of the company. There was a bit of scandal around the deal which he denies.
Gandel owns prime real estate - lots of it, including half of Melbourne's Chadstone shopping mall and a stake in a trust that owns the other half. Rumor has it that his private home is the priciest in Melbourne. Known affectionately as "High-Rise-Harry", he is Oz's apartment building tycoon. He was born in China to Russian parents and started his career as a taxi driver. He now owns hundreds of flats in Sydney and North Shore. He also has a joint venture going with Hong Kong's Lawrence Ho.
Casual Lunch, 2 p.m. Perhaps inspired by Melbourne, whose narrow lanes are known for their hip cafes and boutiques, Adelaide’s side streets are having something of a moment. Experience the vibe on Ebenezer Place, which is lined with an eclectic mix of businesses; last year, a popular suburban establishment, Parwana Afghan Kitchen, opened a sister restaurant, the pint-size Kutchi Deli Parwana. 9.50 at 1.36 Australian to the U.S. On a sunny day, order a few dishes and take a seat on the sidewalk to soak in the atmosphere. 2. Arty Afternoon, 3 p.m. The Art Gallery of South Australia houses an expansive collection in its stately building on Adelaide’s North Terrace, a leafy boulevard lined with grand monuments and University of Adelaide buildings.
Inside, admission is free to most exhibitions, and you can browse Australian, Aboriginal and European art, and even a small Islamic gallery. If you’re in town early in the month, you’re in luck: The museum stays open until 9 p.m. First Fridays, with a festive program of live music, guided tours and talks with featured artists in the evening. 3. Pedestrian Promenade, 5 p.m. Adelaide’s main promenade is Rundle Mall, a long pedestrianized artery, home to the city’s best shopping and restaurants. 4. Handmade Haven, 7 p.m. For a souvenir that reflects Adelaide’s creative spirit, pop into Urban Cow Studio.
Its rooms have creaky floorboards splattered with paint and are cluttered with jewelry, housewares, canvases and more, all handmade in Adelaide by more than 150 local artists and artisans. Look out for funky Elodie Barker ceramic mugs (44 dollars each) and hand-poured soy candles in coconut, espresso and mango papaya scents (30 dollars for medium, 40 dollars for large sizes), or browse exhibits by local artists. The location also houses the Howling Owl cafe and the comedy club Rhino Room. 5. Out of Africa, 8 p.m. One of the city’s top chefs is an import from South Africa, and since he opened Africola in November 2014, Duncan Welgemoed has been bringing the flavors of his home country to Australia. Africola’s interiors are a nod to the shebeens (taverns) of the townships, with colorful murals, repurposed Coke bottles (here doubling as chile-sauce dispensers), bright fabrics and plastic menus illustrated with Mandela motifs.
A Sydney real estate agent will face a string of charges in court next month after she allegedly stole a credit card from a house inspection. The woman, 38, allegedly took the victim's bank card when showing potential buyers a property in the northern beaches suburb of Dee Why on Saturday. Police will allege she asked the current occupant of the residence to vacate the premises during the hour-long open inspection. 3,200 in a frenzied shopping spree in the area. That night the man was contacted by his bank to advise him what appeared to be suspicious recent activity on his credit card,' Northern Beaches acting crime manager Guy Magee told The Manly Daily. The man was told there had been a series of tip-and-go purchases on his credit card in a period of a few hours at retail outlets in Dee Why, Collaroy, Narrabeen and Avalon.
Australia’s resources boom has seen all eyes turn to Perth in recent years - and the Western Australian capital city is known as a dynamic, metropolitan area with a population of some 1.7 million people. As the nation’s fastest-growing state, WA is focused on development - and nowhere in the state is as focused on business, culture and arts and entertainment than Perth. Real estate in Perth - where to start? When it comes to Perth real estate, there are many factors to consider - and with so many suburbs to choose from, you might want to begin by choosing the lifestyle factors that are most important to you.
If you’re keen to get out and about on WA’s famous beaches, you might want to start your Perth property search in Cottesloe. As one of the city’s most prestigious suburbs, you’ll find a great mix of housing types here - offering close access to more than three kilometres of stunning beaches. There are plenty of amenities to be found along the waterfront - including numerous restaurants and cafes. Alternatively, outdoor enthusiasts might want to investigate the Perth real estate on offer at City Beach, which is situated 11 kilometres from the Perth CBD. Boasting plenty of natural bushland and excellent sports facilities at City Beach Oval, City Beach is part of the Town of Cambridge and has plenty to offer residents who love to be active.
A waterfront alternative to Perth’s main beaches are its riverside suburbs and Attadale - which is located nine kilometres from the CBD on the south bank of the Swan River - is particularly appealing. Attadale offers a pleasant blend of the best the city has to offer - Perth property dwellers here enjoy views of the CBD, as well as ample riverfront - which includes cycling paths and walkways. While one and two-storey family homes are the norm here, units and villas can also be found - ensuring there is something for everyone. Whether you’ve decided to relocate to Perth or are simply looking to make an investment, the agents at Ray White can help. With more than a century of experience under our belts, we are well-equipped to help you through every stage of the process, whether you are buying, selling, renting or investing. We’re responsible for approximately ten per cent of all real estate transactions in Australia - and you can rest assured that our commitment to our customers is evident in everything we do.
Owning property has long been the Australian dream and regarded as a pretty safe investment. But a number of Australians have been hit by criminals who have sold their house through simple identity fraud, then pocketed the profits and disappeared. Recently a house in the Canberra suburb of Macgregor was offloaded through a South African-based real estate scam without the owner’s knowledge. The owners, who are based overseas, only discovered their investment property had been sold when they contacted their property manager to query why rental money hadn’t been paid. Canberra Police are now investigating a series of exchanges which resulted in the fraud and the disbursement of funds.
“The absence of the home owner and an inability to personally review documentation which may be fraudulent provides leverage for the scammers to operate. Police would urge home owners residing overseas or travelling overseas for a lengthy period to establish robust protocols which protect and confirm their bona fides,” ACT Police said in a statement. In late July a 46-year-old man was charged with fraud after allegedly falsifying his identity to sell two Gold Coast homes which didn’t belong to him. Earlier this year NSW Fair Trading Minister Stuart Ayres issued a warning to property owners and real estate agents about scam emails being sent to landlords living overseas.
“The scam email advises agencies of managing landlords to forward forms to them to complete and return to the scammer,” he said. A run of these types of scams resulted in a group of Western Australian property owners being defrauded of their properties. 240,000 unit at Perth suburb Mandurah. Allegedly the trio changed the owner’s contact details and subsequently made a request to sell the property. An offer was received for the property but the scam unravelled when a contract was sent to the rightful owner - luckily by mail, and before deeds or funds had changed hands. Cutajar said there was a real risk in Australia’s property market of scammers stealing their title and selling or mortgaging their property without their knowledge.
He said it all starts with identity fraud. The scammer acquires fake birth certificates, Medicare cards, passports and drivers licences in the home owner’s name. Cutajar said the forms of identification only need to look real because a real estate agent or solicitor are only going to sight the documents. Discovering your house has been fraudulently sold to an innocent buyer makes recourse complicated and difficult. “In almost all of the cases it has resulted in litigation,” Cutajar said. “In some instances they may go against the owner, in some instances they may go against the real estate agent that sold it.

Nice 'N' Sleazy Festival, Morecambe 2018! Day One!
Friday 25th May - Day One The 13th Nice N Sleazy festival is upon us. Big Ivan has pulled it off again. The Trimpell Sports and Social Club, yet again is the perfect location for the next three days of Punk and Ska music. The on-site camping lends itself to the holiday atmosphere and the relaxed feel of this festival, set it apart from many other festivals of it's type. The entire team has made sure it will be an incredible weekend and there's many people to thanks for making sure it goes without any drama's. Stu Taylor (STP Records), School of Rock Media (SORM), The Trimpell Camera Club, Security, Catering and the many crew members and volunteers will make this an event to remember. The Line up is incredible and the scene is set so, let's get this party started. (Yes, there was a pre-show last night but, hey ho, let's go) https://www.nicensleazy.info Thirteen Hailing from Falkirk in Scotland, Thirteen have the opening slot at Nice N Sleazy this year. They proudly take the stage and fire straight into their set. The songs have a reflective theme running through them harking back to the glory days of punk but with a modern feel to them. Quoting influences from SLF, NOFX and The Wildhearts, this blend of UK/USA – Punk and Rock comes through in the music. Dolly (Guitar/Vocals) gives a shout out that the bands from Scotland much to the amusement of a few who respond with references to kilts!!! “10,000 Record Sleeves” goes down well as Dolly brings some nostalgia about his record collection, then “Days Gone By” follows on with Craig (Bass/Vocals) and Greg (Drums) provide the solid foundation for the tuneful guitar licks. “Tattered Sleeve” is the next song up, but there’s no evidence of any sleeves tonight as the band are sporting cut off jackets and T shirts, necessary as the temp gets hotter from now on all weekend! The plug for their current E.P. “Spirit of Resistance” introduces the title track. https://soundcloud.com/raymond-thomson/thirteen-10000-record-sleeves https://www.facebook.com/ThirteenUK The Lurkers Rumours were out that Guitarist Dave Kemp was stuck on the motorway as Stuart Meadows was warming up his kit. It was true, Dave, stuck in traffic and driving for over 5 1/2hrs for what should’ve been an easy afternoon drive. To compound things, the gremlins played havoc with his amp/guitar to the point where Arthur (Bass) had to play stand up comedian by rattling off some jokes. The irony was not lost, Morecambe being the home of one of the best loved comedians in Eric. Arthur does a great job keeping the crowd amused with his impromptu stand up and once the gremlins had been sorted, The Lurkers got into their raucous punk set with some real attitude. “I’m on Heat” gets the gig off to a flyer and there’s no respite as Stu fires into the second song “Sure and Steady”. Mental Health is a subject that will be referenced by many bands over the weekend as Arthur introduces “In the Rubber Room”. A tune from the last album “Come and reminisce if you think you’re old enough” is up next and Arthur sings about the hey days and cleverly makes reference to some of the original punk bands, slipping in one liners from their hits. The New York Dolls song “Pills” is a Lurkers favourite and Dave Kemp delivers the opening lick superbly. Dave’s great rock n roll lead solo during the song makes for a memorable version of the cover. As the audience shout out their favourite songs in the breaks, Arthur goes with “Mass Media Believer” the “B” side to “Freak Show” which is up next. There’s a great mix of new and old tonight and “Shadow” and “Little Ol Wine Drinker Me” close an eventful performance with a spirited display from the threesome. The Lurkers overcome adversity to deliver a cracking live set. https://youtu.be/yl7mdKsPvbw https://www.facebook.com/The-Lurkers-243674112460296/ Captain Hotknives Up next, some delightful Punk Humour and cleverly crafted lyrics from the solo acoustic Captain Hotknives. With song titles “Anarchist Squat Punk Band” and “I Skanked my Nana” he can’t fail to go down well with the crowd. The room is busy and show their appreciation. https://www.facebook.com/captainhotknives Drongos for Europe Tommy Drongo (Vocals) greets the crowd and wonders when the last time they played Nice N Sleazy…. It may have been a while but launching into “May Day”, he reminds everyone how relevant the band are to this day with their aggressive anti-government/anti-establishment songs. The passion and delivery are there right from the off as “there’s gonna be a riot” has a rousing effect on the audience. Dek (Bass) opens the next song “Whose Army” up next has Tommy asking if we we're going to war, who would it be with? The set continues with a “best of” feel as “Stand Up Be Strong” and “Who’s Got The Power” are played with real purpose. “Who’s the drunkest person in the room” asks Tommy as he fires into the next few songs launching the mic at the barrier for the singalongs. “Ain’t No Way We’re Backing Down” has Mac Mayhem (Guitar) thrashing his way through the song chopping chords at the verse until Danny (Drums) and Dek (Bass) are left at the bridge with the crowd in full voice. “Freakazoid” builds up the frenzy until Tommy announces the last song and “Revolution Times” brings the charged set to a close. The Drongo’s never disappoint and tonight was no different. https://youtu.be/FyhQIxzKGDM https://www.facebook.com/drongos-for-europe-251933998393/ 999 “Hello friends…. Alright” screams Nick Cash (Guitar/Vocals) before 999 get their set off to a blistering start. Early favourites “Inside Out”, “Hit Me and “Feeling Alright With The Crew” get the set off to a great start as Nick is thankful for a good crew at Nice N Sleazy. “Lie Lie Lie” up next and shows the band to be on form with Guy Days (Guitar) showing off his talents with some great punk/rock n roll licks. “Some of the Places I Used to Go” and “Boys in the Gang” draw upon the bands influences and keep the gig on track. It’s Arthur (Bass) and Stuart Meadows (Drums) second appearance of the night having played with The Lurkers earlier as they begin the recognisable “Titanic Reaction” from the 1st Album. Guy takes over on vocals for “I Really Like You” and Arthur demands the crowd have a pogo! Stu’s furiously tight drumming drives the song along at pace for the 2 minutes it lasts. Nick starts the next song with a howl warning the audience that the big bad wolf or Donald Trump might get them! “Little Red Riding Hood” is followed by the frantic “No Pity”. A new song “Last Breath” from the bands last album keeps up the tempo with a singalong “La,La,La” chorus and great drumming from Stu at the bridge with some heavy toms/kick to help the singalong. Nick thanks the crowd for their support over the years, making comment that they’re still there after all these years. An enthusiastic crowd are rewarded with a great version of “Emergency” with Guy thrashing out the robotic chords to suit Stu’s powerful drumming, “I’m back in full attack” sings Nick and he’s not far wrong as 999 have given a great performance tonight. Nick asks the crowd for a singalong to “Nasty Nasty” and they oblige with a rousing “What the hell is wrong with you”!!!! The song bursts into life and 999 turn the clock back as band and crowd show their energy. Guy’s guitar solo and Arthur’s driving bass match the urgency of Stu’s drumming. The hits keep coming with “Homicide” as the set nears the end. Nick thanks the crowd for a great evening before they launch into an encore of “My Street Stinks” – “Long live the music” is Nicks parting cry and they depart. https://youtu.be/FM6iDRHlbFE https://www.facebook.com/999Music/ Litterbug Local band Litterbug from Blackpool bring their highly energetic, manic thrash pop punk sound to Nice N Sleazy. Quoting influences from The Pixies/Buzzcocks/Nine Black Alps, their sets starts off at a furious pace with some incredibly tight drumming and edgy bass complimented with great short sharp chords reminiscent of the early punk songs of The Buzzcocks “times up” but sped up. Stuart Diggle (Guitar/Vocals), Andy Higgins (Bass/Vocals) and Cas Streetly (Drums/Vocals) form this frantic trio who were formed in 2005 and have honed their performances since then. “Introvert”, “Prozac Zombie” and “I will Not Explain” get their night off to a great start and some great banter from the band with the audience keeps the evening going. A shout out for Paul Carter as Stu dedicates a song to the well-known punk practitioner as they sing “Don’t Change”. There’s time for punk fanatic Dave Colton to get the band to pose for a “Get Well Kaz” picture for his daughter who’s recovering from surgery. Back at it and the tempo gets faster towards the end of the set before it’s brought to an end with “Petrol Situation”. A great set well delivered by Litterbug so check out their upcoming gigs. https://youtu.be/Tbq16_bT5qg https://www.facebook.com/litterbugblackpool/ Slaughter II It’s gone midnight before Slaughter II take the stage, some delays earlier in the evening have meant Edweena Banger (Guitar/Vocals) takes the stage to the die-hards that are left to see the headline act tonight and they are in for a treat. The heavily 70’s influenced rock’n’roll is delivered by the three members of Slaughter II, Brian Grantham (Drums) an original member of Slaughter and the Dogs and Rick Sullivan (Bass). The set opens with “Now I Know”, “The Bitch” and “Boston Baby” without interruption before Edweena takes a breath to welcome themselves to Nice N Sleazy. The “Mystery Girl” is up next followed by “”Love In New York Tonight” which has a real flavor of The Stooges to it. MC5/New York Dolls wouldn’t be out of place on the bill tonight if they were to follow on but for now, we have “What You Do to Me” to singalong to before “God Save Us All”, a song from the latest album. ”Runaway” and “It’s All Over Now” keep the crowd bouncing with a great version of “White Light / White Heat” going down a storm with the faithful audience. Edweena now brings the “hits” with “Are You Ready Now” and “Cranked Up Really High” being instantly received by the crowd as they crash around until the seminal penultimate song “Where Have All the Boot boys Gone” bring the set to a near frenzy. The crowd demand an encore and “Calling Me” see’s the band end on a high. https://youtu.be/HS2As3yh2T8 https://www.facebook.com/Slaughter-II-899561546850816/ Read the full article

Points could mean promotion prize for Ashton
Weekend Non-league Football Previews
ASHTON UNITED have no room for error tomorrow (Saturday). If they want to make sure of a home tie in the Evo-stik NPL premier division play-off semi-finals on Tuesday, they must win at Workington.
Goal difference means it’s highly unlikely the Robins would miss out on the play-offs altogether, but a defeat or draw at Borough Park could allow Grantham to overtake them. A victory, on the other hand, might even get them into second place depending on Warrington’s fortunes at Stourbridge.
“That Stalybridge game killed us,” said manager Jody Banim. “We should have won it, and if we had we’d be second now. It’s so frustrating.
“At least as it stands everyone will have to put their strongest side out. No one will have the luxury of being able to rest players because everybody needs to win.”
Ashton’s only definite absentees are goalkeeper Dave Carnell, who has a torn hamstring, and club captain Mark Lees, who has a broken metatarsal. However, Alex Johnson, whose availability has been hampered by his new job as a prison warder, will be able to play at Workington and in the play-offs if necessary.
Banim is also hoping to field Matty Chadwick at some point. He explained: “Matty was on the bench at Matlock in midweek but it was a really tight game and it wasn’t the right situation to bring him back. Hopefully he can get some minutes tomorrow.
“We really need to win and secure third place because it would be a nightmare if we had to go to Grantham on Tuesday.”
STALYBRIDGE CELTIC travel to Halesowen for their twelfth game in 22 days with only 13 players available, and one of those faces a fitness test.
Striker Matty Wolfenden limped out of last night’s 5-0 home defeat by Witton Albion and will be assessed before kick-off.
Goalkeeper George Sykes-Kenworthy, who has made an impressive start at Bower Fold, is ruled out with concussion which means that Aidan Winterbottom will be between the sticks after featuring as an outfield substitute in the Matlock and Witton matches.
The game signals the end of Steve Burr’s tenure in the Bower Fold hotseat after it was announced earlier this week that his contract would not be renewed.
In the first division north, promoted HYDE UNITED sign off with a home clash with Colwyn Bay. Victory would even let them finish second, in the unlikely event they win by a four-goal margin and Scarborough lose to Ossett Albion.
Manager Darren Kelly has a full squad to call on apart from long-term absentee Chris Sutherland. Tom Pratt has recovered from a broken toe and made a big impact at Mossley last week when he came on as a substitute.
Elliott Rokka has been recalled by Tranmere and Dominic McHale has returned to Salford City.
The player of the year presentation will follow the match and next season’s home and away kits will be unveiled.
DROYLSDEN, who are home to Brighouse Town, have goalkeeper problems. Will Jones is injured — he was stretchered off with a broken foot in the 3-1 midweek victory over Colwyn Bay — and Richie Branigan needs a fitness test.
GLOSSOP NORTH END take on Ramsbottom at Surrey Street without Adam Jones (calf) and Cav Coo (neck). MOSSLEY travel to Tadcaster lacking the services of James Blair and Danny Hall.
CURZON ASHTON are another club with two players missing. They head for Harrogate Town without Chris Rowney and Niall Cummins, but safe in the knowledge that they have secured their National League North status for a fourth season.
