Food crisis: Reopen land borders, Kano gov urges Tinubu
Governor Abba Kabir-Yusuf of Kano State has urged President Bola Tinubu to open land borders to enhance food security in the country. He stated this during a courtesy visit by the Comptroller-General of Customs, Mr Adewale Adeniyi, on Monday in Kano. Kabir-Yusuf, who lamented the harsh economic conditions being experienced by Nigerians, said that reopening the borders would check inflation and cut prices of food items. “We wish to appreciate the president’s intervention in the ongoing national food initiative. “He considers Kano as the host for the initiative ahead of its planned launch believing that the programme will cushion the effects of food scarcity if implemented. “Another immediate intervention that can make food available and affordable to our population is for the Federal Government to consider the reopening of the borders and allow free importation of commodities,” he said. While stressing the need to reopen the borders, Kabir-Yusuf lauded the Customs’ food distribution scheme and called for proactive measures to guard against diversion of the commodities. Gov pledges support…The governor pledged continued support to the Service to enable it to discharge its mandate effectively. Earlier, Adeniyi called for effective synergy between the Service and the Kano community, adding that NCS was committed to deeper collaboration and mutual understanding. He pledged to implement policies aimed at refining business processes and fostering engagement with stakeholders. NIS arrests human trafficker with 5 victims
A suspected human trafficker with five female victims enroute Niger Republic to Europe have been arrested by the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS). The Comptroller General of the service, Muhammad Babandede, disclosed this in a statement by the Service Public Relations Officer, Sunday James, on Saturday in Abuja. He added that the arrest was made by the operatives at Kongolam border, Katsina State. Babandede reiterated that days of crossing National frontiers without proper documentation and melting into border communities was over, as the Special Border Corps (SBC) and regular border control officers were on their toes 24/7. He said that the SBC and regular border control officers were patrolling with the aim of enforcing adequate border security and control, while human mobility was regulated in line with Federal Government directives. The CG congratulated the team at Kongolam for being at alert to their duty and operating a water tight control which was a well organised patrol along the Flanks. He said their dedication was due to the various trainings, operational exercises and drills they have been exposed to thereby bringing out the best in them. “I want to commend the Katsina Command for making it difficult for Traffickers and Human Smugglers to pass through the border,” he said. Babandede said the suspect and the 5 female victims had been handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) Kano Zonal office for further necessary action in line with NIS mandate. 2 Nigerien with pistols,electronics intercepted by NIS
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has intercepted two Nigerien with pistols, computers and phones at Kongolam border, Katsina. NIS Public Relations Officer, Mr Sunday James made this known in a statement in Abuja on Saturday. According to him, the interception was as a result of the swift operation by the NIS border operatives. “This action by the operatives was after the visit by the Comptroller-General, NIS Muhammad Babandede and his Customs counterpart, Col. Hammeed Ali (rtd), to assess the level of cooperation, synergy and successes so far recorded’’. James further said that the two Nigerien had attempted to open fire in defiance and to evade arrest. “The gallant operatives overpowered them leaving one dead and the other who survived is helping with useful information about their activities. “After due interrogation and profiling the surviving criminal has been handed over to the police for further necessary action’’. He advised the border communities to desist from conniving and sabotaging government efforts at ensuring safer borders. Read the full article
