Filmed Theater Performances:

Βάτραχοι / Frogs, (1998) directed by Kostas Tsianos, produced by Εθνικό Θέατρο (National Theater)

This performance is from the National Theater’s golden age. Dionysus and Xanthias are interpreted by a very famous comedic duo Giannis Bezos, and Petros Fillipides. The rest of the cast are the regular company of the National Theater. These performances instead of shying away from the choral parts, or finding a way to get over them quickly, emphasized them, making them as spectacular as possible with a large number of actors and dancers, meticulous choreography, and intense scenic presence.

As tradition calls, the main comic characters are always impersonated by strong comedians, who have their own distinctive style, and which they employ to make the characters relevant. This comedy is characterized by well-structured, tight stagings with an intense focus on costume. The goal of this and similarly styled comedies is making the audience laugh, but without compromising the true spirit of Aristophanes’ plays. It should be noted that these performances are summer performances, that tour Greece from June to September.
