Off to Riga, Latvia, via Kryziu Kalnas...
Today we are heading across the border into Latvia for 3 nights in Riga.
But first, before we leave Lithuania, a stop at the famed hill of crosses or Kryziu Kalnas. Our tour leader showed us a video that was created as a documentary exploring the creation of the hill and how it served as means of a thorn in the side against the Russians during the Russian occupation. I will admit I knew little of the history behind the hill, and thought the video was an amazing explanation of the history and importance of the area. I wasn't sure what to expect. It was way bigger than I thought it would be and knowing the story helped with quiet reflection when amongst the multitude of crosses. No mice or rats spotted thankfully (apparently there are alot of them in amongst the crosses on the hill - I'm pretty sure the cat we saw was very well fed!) It's a powerful area and although there are constant streams of tourists it's amazingly peaceful. I was very curious as to whether the landscape has changed over the years as to how the people were able to sneak in each evening to replace the crosses. There was no foliage anywhere near the hill for them to hide in, maybe there was back then? (Yes, that's an insight to the constant stream of questions intermingled with music soundtracks that go through my head!)

Not far from the hill, but this time in Latvia, is the Rundāle Palace. Again a massive wow to such an amazing building. The palace is one of the two major baroque palaces built for the Dukes of Courland in what is now Latvia. The palace was built over two periods of time from 1736 until 1740 and from 1764 until 1768. The gardens are beautiful, and it's a fabulously peaceful area. Fortunately the palace had been turned into a school during the Russian occupation. As a result the rooms and building was maintained to retain safety for the children. It could have been worse - it could have been used for arsenal or grain storage and the beautiful features destroyed! As it was, imagining the basketball court and gym set up in the main hall brings a chuckle! This one may be a contender for my future place of residence- but would need some changes!

The it was off to our hotel in Riga. First impression was, what a lovely city!
Next day our group had a tour of the old town in the morning, and we were regaled with some of the fabulous stories and legends from Latvia's past. It helped that this was our tour leaders home town! Vecrīga is the UNESCO listed historical centre (old town), located on the east side of Daugava River. Vecrīga is famous for its old churches and cathedrals, such as Riga Cathedral and St. Peter's church. It's a glorious old town, with some amazing architecture, winding cobblestone streets, and just a hint of whimsical magic...or is that the local drink, black magic, talking??😂 The art novesu buildings here are incredible. One of my favourite building periods! Then we had a quick visit to the three brothers houses with their story, and their age! (Look it up - very interesting!)

The Jewish population of Riga, and Latvia, was also decimated by history. Although jews were a much smaller percentage of the population here, they suffered greatly during Stalin's rule, as well as during German occupation. Each of these Baltic countries have seen incredible atrocities dealt by past invading rulers and their museum's reflect the struggle they faced.
The afternoon saw some of us head out for the optional excursion to Jurmala, the beautiful little beachside town, with a visit to their local museum included. It was very interesting to see how the area had blossomed into the seaside town it is today. Under soviet rule it was a designated industrial area so no beach fun back then!
Day 2 in Riga saw those of us who had signed up head out to the Gauja National park and the town of Sigulda with the ruins of the castle of the knights of the sword. What a lovely area! The castle commands some amazing views of the surrounding national park and Gauja river.
The nearby Gutmalis cave, is the widest and highest cave in the Baltic countries. The legend of the Rose of Turaida began here. With its famed pure water source and inscriptions on its walls that date from the 17th century, that shall now forever be described as grafitti from ye olde bogans (You are all welcome - and yes I said that..). There were also some ladies selling their home made goodies near the cave, things like sugar coated cranberries, garlic almonds, oh yummm.

Our afternoon saw the optional tour of the Ethnographical open air museum, with a food tasting of bread, cottage cheese, jam and local honey... and yes I ate them all together, interesting it was better when they were layered one way over another... I have discovered I really like visiting these Ethnographical areas and seeing the restored/retained buildings from a country. There was a Lutheran Evangalistical church onsite that was absolutely beautiful . I can understand why there are still weddings/celebrations held there.

After a full day it was off to the optional local dinner. This one was fabulous, from food to service staff. Could not be faulted.
Time to say goodbye to Riga...sad face....I loved this city. It has a cool vibe and I'm so glad we got to spend so long here. ' Paldies,' Latvia, you rock!!
More photos to come!!!
Off to the last country tomorrow... Estonia....

Haven't seen anything quite like this one. Even without the blessing of the Pope (it was), this would be an amazing site to visit on its own. It's like tranquility in chaos, with a bit of a drama in between.
