Visitors are “forbidden not to touch”, as the thinking goes that you can find the keys to scientific phenomena by using your own hands and working things out for yourself. So you and your family will literally understand diverse topics such as motion, energy, structure and form, optical illusion and weather.

6. Fort de Sucy

In the Siege of Paris in 1870, Prussian forces used this foothold to bombard the southeast of Paris. So following the war Sucy was reinforced as part of the Séré de Rivières system. This fort is an excellent document about an almost forgotten period.

It took shape from 1879 to 1881 and was bolstered in 1911 and then 1935 in preparation for the two World Wars. The site was bought by the municipality in 1970 and over the last couple of decades has been restored and opened to visitors by the A la Découverte du Fort De Sucy association.

If military architecture is your thing you can spend an agreeable couple of hours hunting through ditches, underground passages, and vaulted chambers.

7. Catacombs of Paris

If you can beat the traffic, one of the top days out in Paris is 15-20 minutes away in Montparnasse. The creepy catacombs are the city’s subterranean ossuaries, storing the remains of over six million Paris inhabitants.

These bones date back several hundred years and were cleared from cemeteries like the Holy Innocents, which had to be shut down from the overuse in 1786. They were brought to this former quarry, where bones and skulls are stacked in eerie decorative patterns.

The tunnels are dimly lit and drip water from above, in case you weren’t freaked out already. Pick up an audioguide for extra depth.

8. Tour de Montparnasse

In the same neighborhood, you can ascend the 18th tallest building in the European Union. A defiant black monolith, the Tour de Montparnasse was finished in 1973 and has always divided opinion.

The joke goes that its roof offers the best view in Paris because the Tour de Montparnasse isn’t part of it. And with the same kind of reasoning, it’s also a wonderful alternative to the Eiffel Tower’s observation decks precisely because this Parisian icon is in the panorama.

The rooftop terrace is 56 floors up and 207 meters about the street level and the vistas of the Eiffel Tower shimmering at night are haunting.

9. Musée Fragonard d’Alfort

After shuffling through the Catacombs you can keep the ghoulish theme going at this bizarre museum at the National Veterinary School.

The museum is named for Honoré Fragonard, who was the school’s professor of anatomy in the 1760s, and in this time created a grisly series of anatomical exhibits known as Écorchés.

These are human and animal body parts, flayed, preserved and arranged in creepily artful displays more than 200 years before the famous Body Worlds exhibition.

It might not shock you to hear that Fragonard was dismissed and labeled a “madman”. There are 21 Écorchés remaining, and they take up one hall in a museum packed with anatomical oddities and specimens gathered since the 18th century.

10. Musée d’Orsay

Catch the RER to this astonishing art museum on the left bank of the Seine. You’ll be greeted by the largest assembly of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings on the planet.

Think van Gogh, Monet, Degas, Renoir, Cézanne; the collection is a dream come true for art aficionados and casual fans alike. That’s because so many of the works here are universally known, like van Gogh’s Starry Night Over the Rhone, or Renoir’s Bal du Moulin de la Galette.

And all this sublime painting, sculpture and applied art are set off by the haunting location, in the Beaux-Arts Gare d’Orsay train station, completed in 1900 and converted for this museum in 1986.

Bangkok et ses 15 millions d’habitants savent recevoir, et ils savent aussi s’amuser. Et quand on vient en Thailande, on peut comprendre l’envie de venir décompresser un peu, souffler en vacances après des mois de dur labeur !

Que vous soyez expats ou visiteurs, Bangkok disposent de plusieurs quartiers à même de pouvoir vous faire passer une nuit de folie, ou simplement en amoureux, à chiller sur un rooftop au au bord de la rivière, que ce soit des bars, restaurants ou souvent, un mix des deux, je ne doute pas que Bangkok saura vous donner votre Very Bad Trip 😉

Si l’on doit résumer, voici les différents quartiers qui ont un certain intérêt pour sortir le soir :

– Khao San Road – Bang Lamphoo – Soi Ari – Victory Monument – Ratchathewi – Silom – RCA (Royal City Avenue) – et bien entendu, Sukhumvit

Notez que beaucoup de restaurants ferment tard jusque minuit, les bars prolongent parfois jusqu’à 1h et dans certaines zones, ils peuvent fermer jusqu’à 2h du matin mais pas au delà.

Quartier de Khao San

Je commence par le plus évident. Khao San est maintenant depuis plusieurs années, devenu le “centre” pour les gens de passage et nouveaux arrivant en Thaïlande. C’est donc tout naturellement vers Khao San que se tourneront beaucoup d’entre vous dans l’idée de boire un coup et voir de l’animation.

La rue s’est depuis quelques mois offert un petit lifting pas déplaisant, avec rénovations de façades, rue légèrement moins “bordélique” même si, rassurez-vous, on y trouve toujours de tout et n’importe quoi…

Khao San Road de nuit.

C’est à celui qui vendra l’alcool le moins cher et le plus fort…

Mais si je veux parler du quartier de khao san, c’est surtout pour parler de ce qu’il y a autour, je peux évoquer vite fait Rambuttri, sa soeur jumelle qui offre une ambiance un poil plus relax que sur Khao San, mais je mettrais surtout l’accent ici sur la rue Phra Athit.

Phra Athit est la rue qui longe la rivière, faisant suite à la rue Phra Sumen. Celle-ci démarre au parc à côté du fort de Phra Sumen et va jusqu’au pont de Phra Pin Klao. Certains d’entre vous y sont certainement déjà passés, après le pont, c’est le théâtre national, le musée national, la place royale de Sanam Luang et donc le Grand Palais et tout ça est accessible à pied.

Vous y avez peut être aussi dormi, l’hôtel New Siam II est souvent cité par les voyageurs comme logement intéressant dans le coin (pour d’autres suggestions je vous invite à jeter un oeil à celles évoquées dans mon article dédié au logement à Bangkok.

En journée, c’est une rue pas désagréable pour venir y manger, mais en soirée, elle change de visage pour devenir plus animée. Mais contrairement à ce que l’on pourrait penser vu son emplacement, c’est une rue et des bars très largement fréquentés par de jeunes Thaïs, venant se désaltérer avec parfois une chicha en bonus.

Seul inconvénient, les tables s’étalent sur le trottoir, laissant peu de place pour les piétons passant là…

Sur Phra Athit Road, juste à côté de la Soi Rambuttri.

Dans cette même zone, je peux citer aussi les rues de Samsen Road, vous avez par exemple le Madame Musur dans la rue Samsen 2. Sur la route principale vous trouverez le Cinema Winehouse et le très réputé Adhere The 13th Blues Bar.

BTS Sukhumvit Line (métro aérien), arrêt Phaya Thai puis tuk tuk ou taxi meter. En bateau avec le Chao Phraya Express, arrêt n°13 Phra Athit ou l’arrêt suivant n°14 Rama 8 si vous allez vers Samsen (ça reste kif kif en distance)

Soi Ari (Soi Phahon Yothin 7)

À ne pas confondre avec la Soi Ari du côté de Sukhumvit, je parle de la Soi Ari au pied de la station de BTS du même nom, en remontant vers le nord de la ville (peu avant l’arrêt pour se rendre à Chatuchak), qui en réalité est la Soi Phahon Yothin 7.

C’est un quartier que je connais bien pour y avoir habité plusieurs années. Et c’est un quartier que j’apprécie toujours. C’est une ambiance très mixte entre quartier d’expat (parce qu’il y en a de plus en plus dans ce coin) et lieu de sortie pour les locaux.

Une bonne table bien remplie à Hobs au Villa Market de la station Ari.

En journée, il y a un nombre impressionnant de café notamment dans le Soi Ari 1. Mais en soirée, beaucoup restent ouverts et proposent aussi à boire et à manger. Au pied de la station, vous avez par exemple la petite zone de shopping Villa Market avec le restaurant/bar Hobs Away et leurs bonnes bières variées.

Dans la coin de la Soi Ari, au pied de l’immeuble Noble Reform, il y a le café/bar Taproom Ari, plus loin vous trouverez le Fat Bird, le Salt (que je n’ai encore jamais testé…)

Il y a aussi un restaurant mexicain sympa, le Casa Azul. Dans la Soi Ari 1, vous trouverez entre autres le O’Glee.

Toujours vers Ari, vous pourrez vous rendre dans la soi Rama V Soi 30 (qui correspond à la soi Phahon Yothin 5, qui fait la jonction entre l’avenue Phahon Yothin et Rama VI. Là bas, vous trouverez aussi un restaurant Hobs (qui est l’acronyme pour House Of Beers) au Aree Garden.

Le long de la rue se trouvent aussi bon nombres de restaurants/bars, comme le Jim’s Burgers & Beers Aree (bien pour la bière mais bof pour les burgers).

Victory Monument

Probablement la zone la plus sous estimé et pourtant Victory Monument, avec son monument en pointe reconnaissable en son centre, est une zone qui bouge le soir venu (et en journée aussi).

Victory Point est son coeur, avec autour, celui que j’ai fréquenté de temps en temps, le Saxophone Bar et son ambiance jazzy, au coin plus loin dans le mall vous avez le restaurant et bar Beat@ Victory Mall, qui a une vue imprenable sur le monument et la ligne de BTS qui passe devant.

En vous éloignant un point du carrefour, en longeant la ligne du BTS, vous trouverez le Sky Train Jazz Bar. Et en supposant que vous faite la totale avec fête très tardive, vous pourrez toujours vous terminer en douceur au Let’s Say Cafe, le long de la Soi Ratchawithi 3, sa particularité étant d’ouvrir 24h/h.

Ratchathewi

Régulièrement mon “fief” de sorties, Ratchathewi est surtout un bon spot pour son Coco Walk, proposant un ensemble de restaurants et bar sous un toit. Clairement orioenté Thai, on y croise tout de même quelques étrangers dont les touristes et expats logeant dans les environs.

Mon fief !

Silom

Patpong. Certainement un mot qu’on vous aura soufflé ou que vous aurez repéré. C’est à la base l’un des quartiers rouge de Bangkok. Mais c’est devenu un lieu de sortie à part entière. On y trouve un marché de nuit dans la rue ainsi que de nombreux établissements pour boire et manger dans ces environs.

C’est pour être franc l’une des zones que je visite le moins donc moins à même de conseiller des établissements en particulier (l’un de ceux que j’aimais a fermé…), mais on peut citer le White Rabbit, au pied de la station de BTS Silom.

Le long de la rue Convent, vous avez le Vesper Cocktail Bar ainsi que MASH.

RCA (Royal City Avenue)

Royal City Avenue (plus connu sous son petit nom RCA) est une rue aux allures banales et plutôt endormie en journée, mais à la nuit tombée, celle-ci se métamorphose et devient entièrement à la fête.

Vous pourrez alors vous défouler au Onyx ou au Route66 Club. Sachant que la zone est très prisé par la jeunesse Thai qui y vient nombreuse le week-end. C’est une zone que j’ai un temps fréquentée, y’a une ambiance clairement plus festive que posée en général même si on trouve des espaces extérieurs pour cela.

A noter que le dress code est plutôt “casual”, les shorts et tongs là bas ça passe pas trop…

Sukhumvit

Le cœur de la ville et certainement le choix le plus évident pour sortir tant cette artère regorge de lieus possibles. À commencer par le début. Si vous descendez à la station Nana, vous serez mis dans le bain de l’animation direct.

Nana abrite l’un des quartiers rouges de Bangkok, mais c’est surtout un lieu de sortie avec de nombreux bars, restaurants et des boîtes de nuit. Beaucoup se concentrent notamment dans la Soi 11. Même si aujourd’hui le mythique Cheap Charlie et toute la petite rue derrière a disparu (et laissera place à un nouveau gratte-ciel…), il reste encore de quoi faire.

Que ce soit au Zanzibar, et sa musique live, le cosy Oskar Bistro ou l’Irish Pub Mulligan’s, il y en a pour tous les goûts. Il y a aussi le réputé Levels pour aller tester ses pas de danse, ou le Nest, un peu loin, sur le toit du Le Fenix Hotel, idéal pour chiller les pieds dans le sable.

Dans la rue Sukhumvit 11.

Avant la Soi 11, vous trouverez avant la Soi 4, le Bully’s qui a de bons burgers, et en face, entre la Soi 3 et la Soi 5, vous trouverez le quartier arabe de Bangkok, on y trouve des restaurants indiens, libanais, égyptiens etc. si jamais vous voulez tester des types de cuisines différentes.

En poursuivant le long de la ligne de BTS, vous pourrez vous arrêtez vers Phrom Pong, outre ses 2 grands magasins, The Emporium et le stylé EmQuartier, vous trouverez de nombreux restaurants japonais authentique, un bar à whisky si vou sêtes amateur (au Hailiang dans la Soi 33).

En bar à proprement parlé, vous en trouverez plusieurs le long de la Soi 33/1, le Robin Hood, Herrity’s Irish Pub ou encore le Royal Oak. Dans un genre similaire, vous pourrez tester Thong lo et ses nombreux restaurants japonais et coréens.

En vous enfonçant le long de l’avenue de Thong Lo, vous pourrez tester de nombreux bars, comme le Rabbit Hole, le Wine Republic avec à côté le Desi beats. L’un des bar/restaurant les plus connus dans le coin est probablement le The Iron Fairies et sa déco intérieure unique.

Enfin en poursuivant le long de la ligne, à la station Phra Khanong, vous trouverez l’excellent W District avec sa place entouré de restaurants et bar, c’est l’un des lieux où je me rends régulièrement.

Bonus : les Rooftop à Bangkok

Je ne pouvais conclure cet article sans vous parler des rooftop, ces bars aux vues imprenables que l’on peut trouver un peu partout dans Bangkok.

Le plus connu d’entre tous à ce jour est le Sky Bar à la tour Lebua. Mis en lumière notamment grâce au film Very Bad Trip 2 (Titre original : Hangover 2) qui avait lieu à Bangkok. Si la vue sur la rivière est effectivement sublime et que j’ai eu la chance d’y dîner, c’était il y a un paquet d’années maintenant. À l’époque le bar était à tarif raisonnable.

Sa popularité grandissante, il est un peu devenu hors de prix avec une boisson minimum à 400 Bahts (10 €), et ça, c’est un Coca… Les cocktails sont eux à minimum 800 Bahts (pour vous donner un ordre de grandeur, ça tourne normalement autour de 240 Bahts).

La vue depuis la tour Lebua au Sky Bar.

La tour Lebua est située en bout de la rue Silom, le métro le plus proche est le BTS Chong Nonsi, mais il faut encore 1,5 km pour y arriver à pied (autant prendre un tuk tuk).

Aussi avec une vue sur la rivière, cette fois de l’autre côté, vous avez le moins connu Three Sixty Lounge, au sommet de l’hôtel Millennium Hilton Bangkok.

En revenant côté centre, au coin de l’avenue Sathorn et Rama IV, vous avez le bel hôtel So Sofitel qui a une superbe vue sur le parc Lumphini et possède 3 spots pour ça. Vous avez le Water Club et sa piscine accueillant des Pool Party au 10e étage, et plus haut au 29e étage, le Park Society, qui fait principalement restaurant et ferme dès 22h30.

Enfin et pour terminer la soirée, vous pouvez monter au 30e étage et siroter un coktail au HI-SO Rooftop bar.

Autre combo possible, le centre commercial Central World, accessible depuis le bateau (via un canal, arrêt Pratu Nam) ou depuis le métro Chitlom (BTS Sukhumvit Line). Là, vous aurez non pas un, mais 3 rooftop !

2 sont presque côte à côte puisqu’ils font parti de l’hôtel Centara Grand qui est inclus dans le bâtiment du centre commercial. Le Red Sky est situé au 55e étage, ouvert de 16h à 1h, exige une tenue correcte et une réservation est obligatoire. Même condition au CRU Champagne, situé lui plus haut au 65e étage. Il faut aussi restaurant.

En haut d’une autre tour mais toujours appartement au Central World, il y a le restaurant Zense, qui fait aussi bar mais ferme plus tôt à 23h30.

Du côté de Sukhumvit, dans la Soi Sukhumvit 11 dont je vous parle justement plus haut, vous avez le bar restaurant Above Eleven, au 32e étage du Fraser Suites, qui propose un style de cuisine fusion improbable entre péruvien, japonais et new-yorkais.

Pas très loin entre la Soi Sukhumvit 13 et la 15, vous avez également au 32e étage du Sofitel Sukhumvit, l’Appart, un restaurant français que j’avais eu l’occasion de visiter avec des amis blogueurs (coucou Amandine et François). Vous pourrez soit déguster un bon repas à la Française, dans un décor conçu comme un appart cossu de Paris, tout en profitant d’un petit cocktail sur la (petite) terrasse à l’extérieur.

Plus loin au niveau de Thong Lo, que j’ai aussi évoqué dans cet article, vous avez un bar au sommet de l’hôtel Bangkok Marriott Hotel Sukhumvit, l’excellent Octave Rooftop Lounge & Bar.

Si avec toutes ces suggestions vous ne trouvez pas de quoi passer une bonne soirée à Bangkok, je ne sais plus quoi dire… Si vous avez votre petit coin favori, je suis tout ouï !

6-1. Les témoins

Il existe plus de 130 témoignages visuels, qui confirment que l’avion était effectivement là, qu’il volait très bas et qu’il a bien explosé sur le Pentagone.

Il faut dire qu’il avait ce jour-là beaucoup de circulation sur l’autoroute située à 150 mètres du bâtiment et survolée par l’avion.

Vous pouvez d’ailleurs retrouver tous les témoignages (en anglais) sur ce premier lien et sur ce deuxième lien et sur ce troisième lien.

Dans son livre L’effroyable mensonge, Guillaume Dasquier en reprend un qu’il a obtenu directement :

Nous avons progressé de manière contradictoire, à charge et à décharge, en recherchant des individus qui avaient vu le Boeing d’American Airlines foncer sur le Pentagone, mais aussi en recherchant des individus qui auraient vu un missile se précipiter sur le bâtiment ou toute autre manifestation de nature à infirmer la présence du Boeing à cet endroit-là.

Premier constat : nous n’avons identifié aucune personne, s’exprimant en son nom propre ou sous le sceau de l’anonymat, qui déclare avoir vu un missile ou tout autre explosif provoquer la déflagration contre la façade du Pentagone. Second constat : nous avons pu constituer une première liste de témoins oculaires affirmant qu’un Boeing s’est bien précipité contre le Pentagone ce 11 septembre au matin. Nos contacts personnels à Washington, la consultation de la presse locale écrite et télévisée des 11 et 12 septembre ont permis en l’espace de trois jours de répertorier dix-huit personnes, vivant dans la région d’Arlington ou à Washington, et facilement joignables en consultant les annuaires locaux. Il s’agit des personnes suivantes, qui décrivent toutes, avec de nombreuses similitudes, la trajectoire de l’avion avant l’impact contre le Pentagone :

– Alfred Regnery, arrivé en voiture depuis le pont sur la rivière Potomac ; – Allen Cleveland, piéton sortant du métro ; – D. S. Khavkin : elle et son mari vivent au huitième étage d’un immeuble qui fait face au Pentagone ; depuis leur balcon, ils ont assisté aux derniers instants du vol du Boeing sur le bâtiment ; – Paul Coleridge, qui se trouvait sur le Wilson Bridge quand il a vu l’avion ; – Pam Bradley, automobiliste ; – Joel Sucherman, journaliste, piéton ; – Fred Gaskins, automobiliste ; – Aydan Kizildrgli, piéton ; – Omar Campo, piéton, employé à l’entretien des pelouses, a vu l’avion passer au-dessus de sa tête et heurter le Pentagone ; – Afework Ragos, automobiliste, programmateur informatique ; – Mike Walter, piéton ; – Tim Timmerman, automobiliste et pilote de ligne ; – Steve Eiden, automobiliste ; – Elaine McCusker, automobiliste, employée à l’Université de Washington ; – Stephen McGraw, passager en voiture ; – Steve Anderson, du journal USA Today, a assisté aux derniers instants du vol 77 depuis son bureau, au dix-neuvième étage d’une tour à Arlington ; – James Robbins, journaliste à National Review.

Dans le cas présent, interroger de manière détaillée certains témoins présentait une difficulté de principe : puisque le Pentagone abrite près de 23 000 employés du ministère de la Défense, une partie non négligeable des témoins présents dans l’environnement de la bâtisse, le 11 septembre au matin, appartenaient au personnel de cette administration. Or, comme Thierry Meyssan juge que tous ces fonctionnaires sont peu ou prou complices, il semblait d’autant plus objectif – et magnanime – de s’entretenir avec un homme ou une femme, témoin oculaire, qui ne porte pas l’uniforme.

John 0’Keefe fait partie de ceux-là. Ce jeune homme de vingt-six ans travaille dans l’entreprise de presse Legal Times, et coordonne le travail éditorial d’une partie des titres publiés par la société, en particulier le bimensuel Influence. Ce dernier suit l’actualité du lobbying, c’est-à-dire des groupes de pression industriels et des cabinets qui les représentent. Il consacre régulièrement des articles d’enquête aux liens entre l’administration Bush et les groupes de pression de l’industrie du pétrole ou du tabac – du vrai journalisme d’investigation, sans accusations à l’emporte-pièce et ciselé. Donc, a priori, rien qui place John O’Keefe au nombre des représentants zélés du parti républicain, de l’armée ou du complexe militaro-industriel. John 0’Keefe vit dans la ville d’Alexandria, dans l’État de Virginie, à une quinzaine de minutes en voiture d’Arlington, près de laquelle il passe chaque matin et chaque soir pour se rendre à son bureau, situé un peu plus loin, dans le quartier nord-ouest de Washington, sur M Street.

Voici le témoignage écrit et signé qu’il nous a livré : « Ce matin-là, comme d’habitude, je me préparais pour aller travailler tout en écoutant la radio. Peu avant 9 heures, l’animateur à la radio a annoncé qu’un avion venait de s’écraser sur le World Trade Center. À cet instant, comme beaucoup de gens je crois, j’ai d’abord cru qu’il s’agissait d’un petit appareil [de la catégorie des avions d’affaires privés très répandus aux États- Unis], mais j’ai éteint la radio pour allumer la télé sur l’émission Good Morning America [la grande émission d’information du matin diffusée sur ABC News], où j’ai découvert ce qui se passait.

« Je continuais à m’habiller tout en regardant la télé et là j’ai vu l’avion toucher la seconde tour. Je me souviens avoir eu le souffle coupé par le spectacle de l’explosion. L’autre chose dont je me souviens c’est que le téléphone a sonné à cet instant ; c’était une collègue, qui était au travail et s’inquiétait : “Penses-tu que nous sommes en sécurité ici ?” m’a-t-elle demandé. Je lui ai assuré que nous l’étions, lui expliquant que ça ne concernait que New York. Nous avons parlé un court instant, puis je lui ai dit que je partais pour venir au bureau. Il était 9 h 20.

« J’habite à environ dix-quinze minutes du Pentagone, à Alexandria, et dans mes navettes quotidiennes pour aller travailler je dois passer près de la façade ouest du bâtiment. La circulation était très ralentie sur l’autoroute ce matin-là, peut-être parce que tout le monde écoutait la radio. Pour ma part, j’écoutais la radio d’information continue WTOP. J’ai décidé de quitter l’autoroute et d’emprunter une longue bretelle menant à une route qui me permettait de contourner le Pentagone. Puis, je me souviens que je me suis arrêté à un stop. Je venais juste d’entendre à la radio que le National Airport [le Reagan National Airport, aéroport pour les lignes régulières, situé à proximité du Pentagone] venait de fermer au trafic aérien, sauf pour les vols en cours d’arrivée.

« Là, soudain, arrivant de mon côté gauche – j’ignore si je l’ai d’abord vu ou entendu – un avion de couleur argentée est passé [les appareils des lignes American Airlines se distinguent aisément à la partie de leur carlingue recouverte d’une peinture argentée]. Je suis habitué à voir des avions voler à basse altitude dans cette zone, car nous sommes vraiment à un mile ou deux [1 mile = 1,6 km] du National Airport. Mais là, il semblait voler trop bas et filer dans une mauvaise direction. Je me rappelle que je me suis dit qu’il ne pourrait jamais rejoindre l’aéroport dans ces conditions.

« Jusqu’à ce que je réalise qu’il entrait en collision avec le Pentagone. Il est arrivé en descente, en passant. Au-dessus de l’autoroute, sur ma gauche, et est passé devant ma voiture. L’avion ne volait pas en piqué. Il paraissait sous contrôle et voler comme un appareil sur le point d’atterrir. Ça s’est déroulé très vite et très près de moi, mais j’ai clairement vu le nom et le logo American Airlines sur l’avion. Il y a eu une explosion géante, avec des flammes orange qui sortaient du Pentagone. J’ai pensé que la route devant moi allait être détruite. Puis tout devint noir, il y eut juste une épaisse fumée noire ».

De mon travail, au 19eme étage de l’immeuble d’USA TODAY à Arlington, en Virginie, j’ai vue sur le cimetière d’Arlington, sur Crystal City, sur le Pentagone, sur l’aéroport national et sur la rivière Potomac…

Juste après avoir regardé la seconde tragédie à la télé, j’ai entendu des moteurs dépasser notre immeuble, ce qui est habituel car il se trouve tout proche de l’aéroport. Pourtant, il me semblait que l’aéroport était fermé. Je me suis dit que c’était un avion qui venait pour atterrir. Un court instant plus tard, alors que je regardais vers mon bureau, l’avion a attiré mon regard.

Je n’ai pas compris tout de suite. Je me suis dit que je ne pouvais pas croire que le pilote volait si bas. Soudain, j’ai compris ce qui allait arriver. Je vis avec effroi l’avion voler au niveau des arbres, penché légèrement sur la gauche, enfoncer son aile dans le sol et s’écraser dans le mur ouest du Pentagone en explosant dans une gigantesque boule de feu orange. Ensuite de la fumée noire. Et ensuite de la fumée blanche.

Deb Anlauf

Comme des millions de gens de cette nation en état de choc, Deb Anlauf passa son mardi matin scotché à sa télé, regardant avec incrédulité les volutes de fumée s’élevant du World Trade Center de New York City.

C’est alors qu’à 8h40 CDT, ce matin-là, la plus grande opération terroriste de toute l’histoire des Etats-Unis frappa tout proche de la résidence d’Anlauf et de son mari Jeff. Le couple, qui avait déménagé de Colfax en Australie quatre mois plus tôt se trouvait au Sheraton National Hotel à Arlington en Virginie, à moins de deux rues du Pentagone, quand Deb Anlauf vit “une chose qu’elle n’aurait jamais pensé voir”.

Peu avant 9h30, Anlauf regardait la couverture tv des incendies du World Trade Center quand elle décida de retourner à sa chambre située dans une autre partie de l’hôtel, au 14ème étage. Une fois dans sa chambre, elle entendit un “fort vrombissement” et elle regarda par la fenêtre pour voir ce qui se passait.

“Soudain, j’ai vu cet avion juste devant ma fenêtre” déclara Anlauf pendant un entretien téléphonique passé de sa chambre d’hôtel ce matin-là. “C’était comme si je pouvais le touché, il était si proche. C’était tellement surréaliste.”

“Ensuite, il passa droit devant l’endroit où nous nous trouvions et vola directement sur le Pentagone. Ce ne fut plus qu’une énorme boule de feu qui se cracha dans le mur (du Pentagone). Quand il le heurta, l’hôtel entier trembla.

Stuart Artman

En tant qu’officier de l’armée, Stuart Artman raconta qu’il avait vu le résultat des attaques terroristes en Somalie, au Honduras et au Nicaragua. Ce mardi, il vit directement une attaque de ses propres yeux.

Artman, aujourd’hui lieutenant-colonel dans l’armée de réserve et ingénieur pour la ville de Winter Haven, participait alors à une conférence à Washington.

Aux alentours de 9h45, alors qu’il marchait avec un ami près du Washington Monument, il vit un avion voler bas au-dessus de la ville. Ça ne sortait pas de l’ordinaire. “Les avions volent bas sis souvent que personne n’y prête aucune attention”, relata Artman.

Mais ça n’était pas n’importe quel avion. “J’ai vu cet avion qui frappa le Pentagone” déclara-t-il.” Il a filé derrière des arbres.” Il vit ensuite la fumée provenant du Pentagone.

“C’était la panique—la police, les voitures banalisées partout”, raconta Artman, 44 ans. “Les gens étaient figés autour de moi. Personne ne savait ce qu’il se passait. Dès que j’ai vu le Pentagone prendre feu, je me suis dit, “il est temps de partir”.

Ralph Banton

Dans le Pentagone, le secrétaire à la défense Donald Rumsfeld venait juste de rentrer dans son bureau après avoir appris l’attaque du World Trade Center. Sur le parvis d’une maison, à un peu plus d’un kilomètre, Ralph Banton, 79 ans, profitait d’une matinée ensoleillée.

C’est alors que Banton entendit un avion volant juste au-dessus de sa tête, vraiment bas.

“C’était comme s’il accélérait au lieu de ralentir”, raconta-t-il.

Quelques secondes plus tard, l’avion American Flight 77, détourné alors qu’il transportait 64 personnes de Washington à Los Angeles, s’encastra dans l’aile du Pentagone dans une attaque terroriste visant le bâtiment qui représentait la puissance militaire américaine dans le monde.

“D’habitude, il y a beaucoup de monde qui se balade le sourire au visage”, déclara David Battle en examinant la Pennsylvania Avenue quasiment vide, alors qu’elle était située à deux pas de la maison blanche. “Aujourd’hui, c’est comme si tout le monde était en état de choc”.

Plus tôt ce mardi, Battle, un employé du Pentagone, se trouvait en dehors du bâtiment et était sur le point d’y entrer quand l’avion frappa. “Il se dirigeait vers le sol la pointe en avant” raconta-t-il. “Et quand l’impact eut lieu, les voitures et tout ce qui était autour tremblèrent.”

Bauer fut un témoin de l’attaque du Pentagone le 11 septembre.

“Il se trouve que je conduisais dans Washington ce matin-là. Il y allait avoir une conférence de presse au Capitol Hill concernant le problème au Soudan où a lieu une terrible persécution des Chrétiens. En fait, il y a un gouvernement Islamique radial au pouvoir. Des millions de gens ont été tués. Un nombre important d’organisations présentent trouvaient que trop peu était fait à ce sujet et nous allions tenir une conférence de presse pour mettre la pression sur l’administration et le Congrès.

“J’étais dans un embouteillage massif, je n’avais pas bougé de plus cent mètres en vingt minutes. Mon bureau a appelé pour me raconter “l’horrible accident” du premier avion à New York. Et ensuite, ils m’ont rappelé concernant le second avion et ça voulait vraiment dire que quelque chose de bien pire était en train de se produire. C’était seulement à ce moment-là que j’ai vraiment réalisé que j’étais dans un embouteillage. J’étais sur le point de dépasser le Pentagone, grignotant un petit mètre toutes les minutes. Je venais de dépasser la portion la plus proche du Pentagone sur la sortie de la route 395… Soudain, j’ai entendu le vrombissement d’un moteur d’avion.

“J’ai regardé la femme assise dans la voiture d’à côté. Elle avait ce regard effrayé sur le visage. Nous pensions la même chose. Nous avons regardé à travers le pare-brise pour essayer de voir l’avion et ce n’est qu’après quelques secondes que nous avons réalisé que l’avion arrivait par l’arrière, volant au-dessus de cette grande autoroute. Alors il dévia sur la droite dans le Pentagone. L’explosion déplaça littéralement toutes les voitures. C’était un moment effarant.”

WS : Le matin du 11 septembre, vous étiez dans votre voiture. Est-ce que vous avez vraiment vu l’avion s’écraser sur le Pentagone ?

GB : Oui. Je me dirigeai vers Washington pour prendre part à une conférence de presse sur le problème Soudanais, où il y a un gouvernement radical musulman, et je me trouvais dans un bouchon juste devant le Pentagone. Le trafic n’avait pas bougé de plus de 100 mètres en 20 minutes quand j’ai reçu le premier appel à propos d’un avion s’étant crashé dans le World Trade Center, ce qui, à ce moment, était encore considéré comme un accident. Ensuite – pas longtemps après, ce qui rendit évident qu’il ne s’agissait pas d’un accident – un autre avion frappa ; et c’est alors que j’ai réalisé que j’étais situé au point le plus proche de la route se rendant au Pentagone. J’étais à moins de 100 mètres de la sortie et beaucoup de ceux dans l’embouteillage avaient leurs fenêtres ouvertes. Nous comparions les récits — en fonction de quelles stations de radio nous écoutions –-quand soudain, nous avons entendu le vrombissement d’un moteur d’avion. J’ai regardé par le pare-brise et j’ai vu un mouvement sur le côté. Je me suis tourné et j’ai regardé l’avion arriver de derrière, se pencher sur la droite et rentrer dans le Pentagone. L’explosion a littéralement déplacé les voitures. C’était un moment vraiment tragique.

Je savais ce qui s’était passé à New York et je voyais juste ce qui venait d’arriver au Pentagone. À la radio, il rapportait qu’il y avait des flammes près de la Maison-Blanche. Il y avait de nombreux faux rapports sur la radio de Washington ce matin et il était clair – de façon tragique- que c’était le jour le plus important que j’avais jamais vécu.

Sergent Maurice L. Bease

Le sergent Maurice L. Bease avait travaillé dans l’aviation marine depuis assez longtemps pour savoir reconnaitre le passage d’un avion et cela semblait en être un. Il se trouvait alors en dehors de son bureau, proche du Pentagone, le 11 septembre. Se tournant en s’attendant à voir un avion de chasse, il vit l’espace d’un court instant un avion de ligne commercial filer vers le bâtiment et vers lui-même ! Il n’eut même pas le temps de se pencher que l’avion s’encastrait déjà dans l’aile du Pentagone, proche du coin, à à peu près 200 mètres d’où il se tenait.

Immédiatement, une boule de feu balaya l’aile du bâtiment, suivi par de la fumée, beaucoup de fumée. Les gens commençaient à se ruer dehors vers le parking.

Mickey Bell

Singleton Electric était la compagnie supervisant les installations électriques du Wedge One* (*partie n°1 du Pentagone) et venait juste de terminer l’évaluation des améliorations possibles de ce coin quand à 9h45 (EDT), le vol American Airlines 77 s’encastra dans le mur ouest du Pentagone avec 64 personnes à bord. L’avion, qui venait juste de quitter l’aéroport de Dulles à destination de Los Angeles, mit le feu au plus large bâtiment de bureau entre le premier et le second angle.

L’avion arrivait par le sud et pencha sur la gauche alors qu’il pénétrait le bâtiment, manquant de peu la remorque de Singleton Electric et le contremaître du site Mickey Bell. Bell venait tout juste de sortir de la remorque quand il entendit un bruit puissant. La chose suivante dont il se souvint fut quand il se releva du sol où il avait été projeté par l’explosion.

Bell, qui se trouvait à moins de 100 m de l’impact initial de l’avion, fut presque heurté par l’une des ailes de l’avion alors qu’il volait vers lui. Choqué, il monta dans son camion près du dépôt de remorque et fila en vitesse. Il erra dans son camion aux alentours d’Arlington et essaya de passer un appel de son téléphone portable. Il n’arriva au quartier général de Singleton à Gaithersburg que deux heures plus tard, ne se souvent de quasiment rien, d’après ce que raconta le président de Singleton,

Le fait qu’il se soit trouvé si près du crash fut réalisé qu’une fois que ses collègues remarquèrent les dégâts sur le véhicule de Bell. Il avait du plastique et des rivets provenant d’un avion encastré dans la carrosserie pourtant Bell n’avait plus aucune idée de ce qui c’était passé.

Richard Benedetto était dans sa voiture sur le chemin de son travail, bloqué dans le trafic juste devant le Pentagone. Il écoutait –avec effroi — un récit de ce qui c’était passé au World Trade Center à New York. “Ensuite, l’avion est passé juste au-dessus de moi. Je me suis dit, c’est dingue, cet avion va horriblement vite”, raconta Benedetto. “L’avion va se cracher”. Le jet renversa plusieurs poteaux d’éclairage avant de s’encastrer dans le Pentagone. D’autres témoins avaient déclaré qu’il avait semblé venir à pleine vitesse sans tenter de ralentir. “Le bruit était comme celui d’un tir d’artillerie, pas comme celui d’une bombe qui explose.” déclara Benedetto. Ensuite il vit une énorme volute de fumée suivie d’une gigantesque boule de feu, vraisemblablement provenant de l’explosion du fuel de l’avion lors du crash. “Vous ne pouviez même pas voir le bâtiment car il y avait trop de fumée”, expliqua Benedetto.

Susan Bergen était assise dans une chambre d’hôtel au Carlton Ritz non loin du Pentagone ce mardi matin, rivée sur sa télé, regardant la couverture des attaques du World Trade Center.

Du coin du regard, elle vit un avion passer en face de la fenêtre de sa chambre située au 11ème étage. Elle se tourna juste à temps pour voir un gros avion de ligne raser la cime des arbres et s’encastrer dans l’aile du Pentagone, à moins d’un demi-kilomètre de sa chambre d’hôtel. C’était comme si l’avion avait accéléré juste avant de frapper le bâtiment, déclara-t-elle.

“J’ai simplement regardé en l’air et j’ai vu le nez énorme et les ailes de l’appareil arriver droit sur nous puis j’ai simplement vu l’avion frapper le bâtiment,” relata Sean Boger, contrôleur aérien et chef de la tour du Pentagone. “Ça a explosé. Les officiers du service de protection de la Défense furent les premiers sur les lieux de l’attaque terroriste. À vrai dire, l’un d’eux, Marc Bright, a vu l’avion frapper le bâtiment. Il avait été affecté au contrôle de sécurité dans le hall d’entrée du bâtiment.

“J’ai vu l’avion dans la zone annexe de la Navy“, raconta-t-il. “Je savais qu’il allait percuter le bâtiment car il volait très, très bas — à la hauteur des éclairages de la rue. Il en a renversé quelques un.” L’avion se trouvait à quelques secondes avant l’impact — l’annexe est située à seulement quelques centaines de mètres du Pentagone.

Il relata qu’il avait entendu l’avion “accélérer” juste avant qu’il ne heurte le Pentagone. “Aussitôt qu’il a heurté le bâtiment, j’ai compris que c’était une attaque car je savais que ça ne pouvait pas être accidentel.” Il sauta alors dans sa voiture de police et se dirigea vers la zone.

Pam Branstetter, du Staff Judge Advocate’s Office est passée nous voir. Comme chaque employé du quartier général du MTMC ces jours-ci, elle a une histoire à raconter.

“Mon mari a vraiment vu l’avion se crasher dans le Pentagone” raconta-t-elle à l’officier administratif. “Il travaille dans l’annexe de la Navy et l’avion volait si bas qu’il pensait qu’il allait heurter son bâtiment.

Son mari de 29 ans, Ross Branstetter, observa les secondes qui précédèrent avec horreur.

“Il a dit que c’était comme dans un film,” narra Branstetter. “Il a vu l’avion disparaître et la boule de feu qui a suivi. Il était très secoué.”

Omar Campo, un Salvadorien, coupait l’herbe de l’autre côté de la route quand un avion passa au-dessus de sa tête.

“C’était un avion civil. Je pense un avion d’American Airways,” raconta Mr Campo. “J’étais en train de couper l’herbe quand il est arrivé en vrombissant au-dessus de ma tête. J’ai senti l’impact. Tout le sol a tremblé et l’intégralité de la zone pris feu. Je ne pouvais pas m’imaginer que je verrai une telle chose ici.

Je descendais Washignton Boulevard (Route 27) du côté du Pentagone quand un avion me croisa à environ 200 mètres et s’encastra dans le côté de l’immeuble. Il y eut une énorme boule de feu, suivie environ deux secondes après par une pluie de débris. La voiture bougea d’un pied sur la droite quand l’onde de choc frappa. Je vis ce qui devait avoir été une bouteille d’oxygène de secours de l’avion descendre vers l’avant de mon Explorer et une seconde pièce de métal déchiqueté venir sur côté droit de la voiture.

“As we were driving into town on 395, there was an exit. We were trying to get off of the exit for the Memorial Bridge. On the left-hand side, there was a commercial plane coming in, and was coming in too fast and the too low, and the next thing we saw was a go-down below the side of the road, and we just saw the fire that came up after that. […] It was coming on less than a 45 degree angle, and coming down towards the side of the — of 395. And when it came down, it just missed 395 and went down below us, and then you saw the boom — the fire come up from it.”

Évidement, quand des témoins qui ont vu l’avion font dans la comparaison :

Joel Sucherman, l’éditeur de USAToday. com vit toute la scène : un avion de ligne American Airlines passa de la gauche vers la droite à travers son champ de vision alors qu’il se rendait au travail ce mardi matin. […] “Ma première pensée fut qu’il n’allait pas réussir à traverser la rivière jusqu’au Reagan National Airport. Mais peu la personne qui pilotait l’avion, elle ne fit aucun essai pour changer la trajectoire, ” déclara Sucherman. “Il arrivait à grande vitesse mais non pas avec un angle important — presque comme un missile tête chercheuse qui serait focalisé sur sa cible et ne changerait plus sa course. 6-2. Les images

Hélas, aucune caméra n’était tournée correctement à ce moment-là pour filmer clairement l’impact sur le Pentagone.

Rappelons qu’en 2001, il y avait bien moins de caméras qu’aujourd’hui, mais surtout que le coté qui a été visé est le seul qui donnait… sur une pelouse, sans parking :

Donc il y avait un intérêt limité à mettre une caméra pour filmer un mur avec 3 arbres, où rien ne se passe jamais :

Ils auraient évidemment dû (tout comme on aurait dû mettre 5 vigiles armés devant le Bataclan ?), mais ça n’a pas été le cas, point final.

Le FBI a saisi 85 films de caméras de surveillance de la zone, n’en révélant qu’une partie, sur lesquels rien de totalement probant n’est hélas visible.

Ceci alimentant les rumeurs complotistes, et à la demande officielle d’un citoyen américain, la justice a demandé à un agent assermenté du FBI, Jacqueline Maguire, de lui faire un compte-rendu de ces 85 vidéos.

Résultat : sur les 85 vidéos :

72 ne montraient pas le Pentagone, ou ne montraient pas le site du crash ou l’impact de l’avion

13 montraient le site du crash, mais 12 ne le faisait qu’après l’impact, et une seule montrait le crash, celle du parking. (Source)

Cette vidéo était double vidéo, et les deux ont été rendues publiques et filmaient bien l’impact, sauf que, s’agissant de caméras de surveillance d’un parking, leur taux de rafraîchissement n’était que d’une image par seconde ; hélas, les seuls éléments discernables sont des formes indistinctes et de la fumée blanche.

Pourtant, je trouve qu’on y discerne quand même bien l’avion, à vous de voir :

Description

Chiang Rai, qui se traduit par “ville majeure” est le nom de la province et de la ville, capitale de province.

c’est un endroit apprécié pour l’hospitalité de ses habitants et son côté simple mais authentique.

Géographie

La région située tout au nord du pays est composée principalement de jungle et de montagne, la ville, construite sur les bords de la rivière Kok, se trouve à 780 km de la capitale, Bangkok, et 200 km de sa grande sœur, Chiang Mai.

C’est l’une des portes du Triangle d’Or ou région des trois frontières, car elle est accolée au Laos et à la Birmanie.

Histoire de Chiang Rai

Fondé par le roi Mengrai en 1262, Chiang Rai fut la première capitale du royaume de Lanna, bien avant Chiang Mai.

Après avoir été une partie du royaume de Lanna pendant des siècles, Chiang Rai est devenu une province de Thaïlande en 1910

Population

C’est une ville multiculturelle de 200 000 habitants dont 12% sont issus des tribus montagnardes, comme les Akha, Karen, Padaung, Hmong, Lisu et Méo…

La province quant à elle compte 1.1 million d’habitants.

Climat

Chiang Rai a un climat tropical humide et sec, la mousson va du mois d’avril à septembre mais il pleut moins que dans les plaines du sud.

De octobre à mars il pleut rarement, les nuits sont fraîches et les journées chaudes mais supportables. De décembre à février, il peut faire très froid le soir, avec des nuits à 13°c en ville.

Office du tourisme

Il y a un stand d’information touristique à la gare et un bureau de la TAT (office du tourisme thaïlandais) situé thanon Singhaklai.

Vous y trouverez de nombreuses brochures en anglais sur les activités à faire dans la région ainsi que des cartes de la ville, de la province et les horaires de bus.

Le bureau de la TAT est ouvert tous les jours de 8h30 à 16h

Poste

Le bureau de poste se trouve sur la Thanon Utrakit (voir plan ci-dessous). Il est ouvert de 8h30 à 16h30 du lundi au vendredi et de 9h à 12h le samedi et dimanche.

Santé

La ville possède trois hôpitaux dont un semi-privé et moderne où des médecins parlent anglais :

Rejoindre et quitter Chiang Rai

En bus

Il y a deux stations de bus à Chiang Rai, l’ancienne gare routière au centre ville et la nouvelle à sept km au sud (visible sur la carte complète de la ville ici).

De nombreuses navettes relient les deux gares entre elles, cela vous coûtera 15 bah en Song Taew mais après 17h il vous faudra prendre un Tuk Tuk ou un taxi et payer 50 baht.

L’ancienne gare routière dessert surtout les villes de la province de Chiang Rai et aussi certaines villes de la province de Chiang Mai.

La nouvelle gare routière dessert les principales villes de Thaïlande.

Le trajet Chiang Rai – Bangkok dure environ 11h, il y a de nombreux bus, les bus arrivent à la gare de Mo Chit.

Le trajet Chiang Rai – Chiang Mai dure environ 3h, il y a aussi de nombreux bus.

Le trajet Chiang Rai –Sukhothai / Phitsanulok dure environ 7h.

En train

Il n’y a pas de train, la station la plus proche est à Chiang Mai.

Par avion

Chiang Rai a un aéroport international : le Mae Fah Luang-Chiang Rai International Airport, situé à 10 km au nord de la ville.

Les principales compagnies aériennes low cost sont présente : Nok Air, Thai Smile, Thai Air Asia et Thai Lion Air ainsi que la compagnie Bangkok Airways. Le vol Bangkok – Chiang Rai dure environ 1h30.

Se déplacer en ville

En Song taew

De couleur bleu sur Chiang Rai, c’est un pick-up taxi collectif qui permet de se déplacer de manière économique.

Vous indiquez votre trajet et il vous y amène tout en prenant d’autres clients qui vont dans la même direction.

Vous pouvez aussi l’utiliser de manière privé, comme un tuk tuk en vous arrangeant avec le chauffeur.

Un moyen plus rapide mais plus cher, il ne faut pas hésiter à marchander avec le chauffeur.

Guadeloupe

Pointe-à-Pitre offers two marinas at its main port, Guadeloupe Port Caraïbes and Quai de la Marina. both with 50 berths.

Martinique

The approximately 400,000 inhabitants have European, African, and Indian derivations with their own ways of life very rich in diversity with many contradictions, but at the same time also joyful and very welcoming.

Today Martinique is part of the overseas territories of France, the official language is French and the Euro is its valid currency.

How to get to the island?

It is possible to arrive here by air with direct flights from Paris and North America. The island Lamentin International Airport is located close to the capital, Fort-de-France.

What marinas does it offer?

Marina du Marin, located in the south of the island, is the largest marina in Martinique and one of the largest in the Caribbean. It offers its customers 830 berths for boats up to 60 meters in length and a maximum draft of 4.8 meters. Saint Lucia has two airports. Hewanorra International Airport, located on the remote southern end of the island, and George FL Charles Airport located northwest in the more touristy area. International flights land in Hewanorra, while those from other Caribbean islands and charters usually stop at George FL Charles.

What marinas does it offer?

The main tourist ports of Saint Lucia are 3 and they are all located in the northwestern part of the island. Capella Marigot Bay Marina, near Castries, the capital, is a luxurious port with 40 berths also for large boats, up to 85 meters in length.

Further north, in Rodney Bay, Rodney Bay Marina and Island Water World are within easy reach, both with 50 berths available.

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

It is an archipelago made of 32 islands, most of which small and sparsely populated.

They are located between the islands of Santa Lucia and Grenada and are historically part of the British Empire as an English colony of the “Little Antilles”. They have been independent since 1961 but still part of the Commonwealth.

The official language is English but some local dialects deriving from French are also spoken.

How to get to the island?

The main airport is located on the main island, Saint Vincent, and is the Joshua Arnos Vale, located a short distance from Kingstown, the capital.

The airport serves international flights to and from the UK and North America.

What marinas does it offer?

The main tourist port of the island is located in its extreme south, not far from Arnos Vale airport. Blue Lagoon Marina is small (only 20 berths) but very well served with a customs and immigration office open 7 days a week. On request, it is also possible to stay overnight in the partner hotel.
