Detail of Mirrored Place (2017) - Ian Davenport

Ian Davenport’s paintings represent his understanding of the colour theory. “He constructs sequences of hues that present contrasting and complementary results.” He pours glossy acrylic paint from the top of a tilted canvas, and let the paint create a marbled effect at the bottom of the canvas. From his work, it shows both qualities of control and chance.

I was inspired by this because it shows the contrast between structures and natural lines. By the ways paint was applied to the canvas/surface. The structure vertical lines show that it was controlled, and the puddle of paint shows how paint mixed naturally.

Paint Torch (2011) - Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts

This sculpture is 53ft tall, leaning at a 60° angle. The brush creates a contrast with its surroundings. “The bristle part of the brush was moulded into a solid sculptural form with a "blip" of orange paint on its tip, as if it had just picked up the paint and was about to place it on the sky. The source of the paint is suggested by a spiral "glob" of the same colour on the sidewalk under the paintbrush.” Both of the blip and the glob are light up from the inside, while the brush is illuminated from the outside. The sculpture was mostly associated with the Torch of Liberty. It was also made from fibreglass and aluminium.

I was inspired by this because it creates a statement piece in the middle of the street, to draw people attention from a distance. I also like that it lights up so it still would be visible at night.

Catch as a Can (2014) - Daniel Buren

For this exhibition, Daniel Buren has coloured the glass windows of BALTIC, to cast coloured light to the interior of the space. Since the light is cast by natural sunlight, with each visit you would experience a different atmosphere according to the time of day and the light intensity. He also used mirrors to reflect the coloured light from the windows to the walls/ceiling, to make the whole space an intervention.

I was inspired by this because the interior of the space would always be changing. So you would experience a different perspective every time you visit. Also, the colours of the windows are bright and vibrant compare with the plain blank walls. So it’s like a piece of artwork, with the walls being the canvas and the light is the paint.
