NYC Kicks Off The 2022 Latin American Art Triennial
New York Latin American Art Triennial 2022
"Abya Yala: Structural Origins”
NEW YORK (September 2022) – This Labor Day weekend hundreds of art-lovers and visitors descended on Governors Island's Colonels Row Gallery for the official launch and first exhibit of this year’s "New York Latin American Art Triennial 2022"
The organizers and curatorial committee of the New York Latin American Art Triennial announced the launch of its 2022 edition, celebrating the incredible range of works presented by national and international artists from Latin American background coming together under the theme and title "Abya Yala: Structural Origins”.
NYLAAT 2022 examines the various processes and forms of creation inspired by traditional methodologies, materials and concepts which were implemented during the different stages of cultural and intellectual growth in the American continent. This project explores the inevitable repercussion that past generations had on the aesthetic, cultural or social values present in contemporary art in Latin America today. This project also refers to the evolutionary processes in the arts which have influenced the different transformations that Latin American art has undergone.

Governors Island  405-B Colonels Row Gallery
September 3rd to November 16th, 2022
ARTISTS: Alexander Wtges, Carmen Vicente Jiménez, Consejo Ancestral Willka Yaku, Geraldo Zamproni, Juan Si González, Graciela Cassel, Jose Guedes, Julia Magdalena Caporal Gaytán, Miguel Ramírez, Sebastian Mahaluf.
NYLAAT 2022 Schedule of Events
In the exhibitions that make up this edition of the 2022 New York Latin American Art Triennial (NYLAAT) we also try to establish the link between contemporary art in the continent and the premeditated use of materials, elements and forms of autochthonous expression of the first inhabitants of this region from the mats, baskets, goldsmith, pottery, textiles, altars, rituals, paintings closely related to tapestry, sculptures in clay, stone, and metal. From September 3rd, 2022 to January 28th 2023, NYLAAT 2022 will bring together more than 200 artists exhibiting their works in seven (8) venues through New York City, featuring exhibitions, performances, video/short films screenings, outdoor installations, interactive workshops, panel discussions, and more, all free to the public. Under the umbrella of the Bronx Hispanic Festival the five months event will feature free exhibitions and a full calendar of programs at BronxArtsSpace, Boricua College (Bronx Campus), Governors Island at 405-B Colonels Row, Lehman College Art Gallery, Longwood Art Gallery at Hostos Community College, Pace University Art Gallery, Queens College Art Gallery, Teatro Latea at the Clemente Soto Velez Cultural and Educational Center. The New York Latin American Art Triennial is dedicated to organizing exhibitions and cultural programming through New York City to promote our Latin American culture. These exhibitions are intended to provide diverse educational programs that allow a place to engage with contemporary art expressions and investigate a deeper understanding of its role in society. We believe in the fundamental role of education and advocacy through art and in the preservation of the artistic and historic cultural legacies of the Latin American and Caribbean region. The New York Latin American Art Triennial seeks to galvanize the cultural landscape of the communities, complement the academic and visual arts programs of the galleries and institutions, and foster a wider appreciation of contemporary art and cultural understanding. A full schedule of events and list of presenting organizations can be found at www.nylaat.org, with more events to be announced in the coming weeks.

We recently had the pleasure of visiting Adrián Fernández Milanés Studio @adrianfernandezstudio in New York City.
Due to the pandemic lockdowns, we were unable to attend the ‘Pending Memories’ 2020 exhibition at the Wifredo Lam Art Centre in Havana. But we this time we lucked out, and Adrián gave us a last minute private tour of his current studio in the Big Apple. We are thankful for his graciousness.
As always, his work left us breathless and generated so many questions: Is it about the past or about a near/distantfuture? It is history or science fiction? And so many disparate ideas come to mind: Utopia/Dystopia/Heterotopia, melancholy, memory, archives, hope, disbelief, Blade Runner/Planet of Apes, etc.
His new book “Adrián Fernández. Memorias pendientes” published by @editorialturner will be released soon. Do yourself a favour, and get yourself a copy!

Online Reading Session # 13: Francine Birbragher-Rozencwaig “Essays on 20th Century Latin American Art”
17 November 2022, 18:00 h (GMT +1) via Zoom
Invited guest: Francine Birbragher-Rozencwaig, PhD
In this session, we will discuss a selection of essays on Central American and Caribbean art, art and politics in the 1960s and 1980s, and the carnival in Latin America.
Abstract of the publication:
“Essays on 20th Century Latin American Art” (New York, NY: Routledge, 2022) provides a broad synthesis of the subject through short chapters illustrated with reproductions of iconic works by artists who have made significant contributions to art and society. Designed as a teaching tool for non-art historians, the book's purpose is to introduce these important artists within a new scholarly context and recognize their accomplishments with those of others beyond the Americas and the Caribbean. The publication provides an in-depth analysis of topics such as political issues in Latin American art and art and popular culture, introducing views on artists and art-related issues that have rarely been addressed. Organized both regionally and thematically, it takes a unique approach to the exploration of art in the Americas, beginning with discussions of Modernism and Abstraction, followed by a chapter on art and politics from the 1960s to the 1980s. The author covers Spanish-speaking Central America and the Caribbean, regions not usually addressed in Latin American art history surveys. The chapter on Carnival as an expression of popular culture is a particularly valuable addition. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of Latin American history, culture, art, international relations, gender studies, and sociology, as well as Caribbean studies.
Biography of the author:
FRANCINE BIRBRAGHER-ROZENCWAIG is an art historian, independent curator, and writer. She holds a master's degree in art history and a doctorate in Latin American history from the University of Miami. She is an editor and contributor to ArtNexus magazine. Since 1989 she has been writing about contemporary art with an emphasis on Latin America and the Caribbean. As an independent curator, she has organized more than one hundred exhibitions in the United States and Latin America. She is the author of Essays on Latin American Art of the 20th Century (Routledge, 2022). She currently works on projects that question the limits between "high art" and "popular art," analyze gender and sexual identity issues, and suggest new historical readings from artistic expressions. She is co-curator with Juan Canela of the 23rd edition of the Bienal de Arte Paiz, which will take place in Guatemala in 2023.
The session will be held in English.
Limited number of spaces available. Registrations are free of charge and available via Eventbrite.
Coordination and moderation: Katerina Valdivia Bruch
