NYC Kicks Off The 2022 Latin American Art Triennial
New York Latin American Art Triennial 2022
"Abya Yala: Structural Origins”
NEW YORK (September 2022) – This Labor Day weekend hundreds of art-lovers and visitors descended on Governors Island's Colonels Row Gallery for the official launch and first exhibit of this year’s "New York Latin American Art Triennial 2022"
The organizers and curatorial committee of the New York Latin American Art Triennial announced the launch of its 2022 edition, celebrating the incredible range of works presented by national and international artists from Latin American background coming together under the theme and title "Abya Yala: Structural Origins”.
NYLAAT 2022 examines the various processes and forms of creation inspired by traditional methodologies, materials and concepts which were implemented during the different stages of cultural and intellectual growth in the American continent. This project explores the inevitable repercussion that past generations had on the aesthetic, cultural or social values present in contemporary art in Latin America today. This project also refers to the evolutionary processes in the arts which have influenced the different transformations that Latin American art has undergone.

NYLAAT 2022 Schedule of Events
In the exhibitions that make up this edition of the 2022 New York Latin American Art Triennial (NYLAAT) we also try to establish the link between contemporary art in the continent and the premeditated use of materials, elements and forms of autochthonous expression of the first inhabitants of this region from the mats, baskets, goldsmith, pottery, textiles, altars, rituals, paintings closely related to tapestry, sculptures in clay, stone, and metal. From September 3rd, 2022 to January 28th 2023, NYLAAT 2022 will bring together more than 200 artists exhibiting their works in seven (8) venues through New York City, featuring exhibitions, performances, video/short films screenings, outdoor installations, interactive workshops, panel discussions, and more, all free to the public. Under the umbrella of the Bronx Hispanic Festival the five months event will feature free exhibitions and a full calendar of programs at BronxArtsSpace, Boricua College (Bronx Campus), Governors Island at 405-B Colonels Row, Lehman College Art Gallery, Longwood Art Gallery at Hostos Community College, Pace University Art Gallery, Queens College Art Gallery, Teatro Latea at the Clemente Soto Velez Cultural and Educational Center. The New York Latin American Art Triennial is dedicated to organizing exhibitions and cultural programming through New York City to promote our Latin American culture. These exhibitions are intended to provide diverse educational programs that allow a place to engage with contemporary art expressions and investigate a deeper understanding of its role in society. We believe in the fundamental role of education and advocacy through art and in the preservation of the artistic and historic cultural legacies of the Latin American and Caribbean region. The New York Latin American Art Triennial seeks to galvanize the cultural landscape of the communities, complement the academic and visual arts programs of the galleries and institutions, and foster a wider appreciation of contemporary art and cultural understanding. A full schedule of events and list of presenting organizations can be found at www.nylaat.org, with more events to be announced in the coming weeks.

I bet Aries wishes she said his name. Most of us who know his name have not seen nor heard it since MADtv. Hating on one of the biggest pop stars currently in music is really how he's trying to get recognition? 🤣🤣🤣

Housing Costs Are Skyrocketing: How to Navigate This New Real Estate Landscape
Investors buying up a record share of for-sale homes is one factor making the single-family home market so difficult for regular homebuyers. All cash offers and rising mortgage rates put the average home buyer at a disadvantage.   Real estate investors bought a record 18.4% of the homes that were sold in the U.S. during the fourth quarter of 2021, according to a report from real estate brokerage Redfin. That's up from 12.6% a year earlier and a revised rate of 17.4% in the third quarter.  https://www.globest.com/2022/02/17/investors-are-buying-a-record-share-of-us-homes/?slreturn=20220311140421   Investors had the biggest market share in the relatively affordable Sun Belt metros. In Atlanta, 32.7% of homes that sold in the fourth quarter were bought by investors, the biggest share of the 40 U.S. metros in Redfin’s analysis, and in Charlotte it was 32.1%, followed by Jacksonville, Fla. (29.8%), Las Vegas (29.2%) and Phoenix (28.4%).   “The rise of commercial investors into the single-family home market is one reason individual homebuyers are seeing such a spike in prices,” explains Jake Clopton, founder of Clopton Capital.  “Because rents are skyrocketing, it is providing an incentive for investors who plan to rent out the homes they buy.” Jake Clopton

Art's NeoIconography: Arising from the Ashes
Tumblr media
In February of 2014 Franck de las Mercedes watched helplessly, as his life’s work went up in flames when his studio burned down destroying his home and entire life's work.  Returning to the ashes of what was the home and hub of his creativity, he began to scoop up some of the ashes of what was home, art, literature, and music and memorialized all in a jar - the urn of the life he once had. In that jar were not only the ashes but also chunks of charcoal, which later evolved into the Blot work.  Unconsciously immersing himself in the works, he later realized that the series became his attempt to reclaim all that he lost in the fire. The series covers his lost books, his lost music and just as the phoenix - de las Mercedes has resurrected not only his creative edge - but those who have inspired him along his journey into art.
"After the fire of 2014 destroyed my entire life's work, I didn't know where to begin nor what direction to take in order to start painting again. I felt that I needed to give myself time to process what had happened. And yet when I relocated to Washington Heights, where I grew up and where once before I had arrived with nothing as an immigrant; I turned to painting random portraits with ink and acrylic, drawn with pieces of charcoal that I picked up from the ashes of my former studio. The subjects were selected as I encountered them, not thinking of attachments or aversions, the idea was to work and not be creatively paralyzed by the trauma and loss. The entire process actually felt like nonobjective free-writing. They are a glimpse into my creative process at that moment in time, but I also see them as optimistic tributes to lost works transformed into resilient icons through the subjects depicted. " Franck de las Mercedes

Summer Exhibit Seeks to Amplify the Voices of Immigrant Artists In The Heights
CREATING HOME: IMMIGRANT PERSPECTICES
Is the inaugural exhibition in NoMAA’s new gallery on the first floor of the iconic United Palace annex.
New York -- Northern Manhattan is a community shaped by refugees and immigrants from all over the world. In this timely exhibition, sixteen artists from Central and South America, the Caribbean, Asia, Canada, Europe and the Middle East reflect on what it means to create a home away from home. They explore themes such as belonging, memory, identity, nostalgia, and the intertwining of cultures. They examine place, identity, displacement, and fragmentation and they question the politics that continually surround their experiences. We invite you to view their works and to read and listen to their compelling and unique stories.
In this group exhibition, Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance NOMAA amplifies the voices of local immigrant artists.

"My work examines the emotional, spiritual, and developmental fractures in family dynamics inflicted by war, trauma, the disintegration of family through migration, and loss. Taking a critical view at the influence that sociopolitical and cultural issues can have on emotionally impaired families, I often reference my own childhood, history, current events, and pop culture. Each work is constructed from an inventory of visual fragments such as: drawings, journal pages, photographs and found ephemera, arranged with bold colors, jagged linework and abstract text patterns." --Franck de las Mercedes
