The cause of the accident is not known yet. The bus was reportedly jam-packed when the accident took place.
As many as 37 passengers were killed including the driver and 19 sustained injuries after a bus carrying them skidded off the road and rolled down into a 300-foot gorge in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district on Wednesday.
The death toll is likely to go up, the officials said.
The bus skidded off the road near Trungal-Assar on the Batote-Kishtwar national highway and fell 300 feet downhill. According to sources, the bus was ferrying 56 passengers. Due to the fall from a considerable height, the bus was badly damaged, sources said.
Police and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel, besides locals, are involved in the rescue operation.
Some of the deceased have been identified and the bodies will be handed over to their families.
The injured were first taken to a hospital in Doda and subsequently, four of them were airlifted to the GMC hospital in Jammu.
The cause of the accident is not known yet. The officials said the bus was carrying extra passengers and while negotiating a "U" turn, it overturned and rolled down into the gorge.
The bodies were taken out after cutting some parts of the bus, they added. Some of the bodies were badly mutilated, the officials said.
Locals expressed concern over the poor condition of the road which, they said, not only led to this accident but several such incidents in the past.
Mohammad Ashraf, the sarpanch of the area where the accident took place, who along with other local residents, launched the rescue operation, said that at least 10 accidents have taken place in Doda of late, but the administration is yet to act.
"We gave Rs 6 lakh to repair the road. They failed to repair it. They have misappropriated the money. A similar accident took place here only a few months ago and many lives were lost," he added.
This is probably the biggest accident in Doda in the last few years.
Condolences pour in
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to those who lost their lives in the accident. "The bus accident in Doda, Jammu and Kashmir is distressing. My condolences to the families who have lost their near and dear ones. I pray that the injured recover at the earliest," the PMO posted on X.
The Prime Minister has said that an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund would be given to the families of those killed in the accident. Those injured will receive assistance of Rs 50,000.
Meanwhile, J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed profound sorrow and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.
"Extremely pained by the loss of lives in a tragic bus accident in Assar, Doda. My heartfelt condolences to bereaved families & wish for a speedy recovery of those injured in the accident. Directed Div Com & Dist Admin to provide all necessary assistance to affected persons," said LG Sinha.

Reasi Terror Attack: 9 Pilgrims Killed, LG Manoj Sinha Announces ₹10 Lakh Ex-Gratia
In a tragic incident in Reasi, Jammu and Kashmir, terrorists opened fire on a bus carrying Hindu pilgrims, killing nine and injuring 33. Around 6:15 p.m. on Sunday, the 53-seater bus was ambushed and crashed down a rocky canyon on its way from the Shiv Khori cave temple to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra.
Details of the Incident
Mohita Sharma, the SSP for Reasi, said that a group of militants targeted the Yatri bus in the Ransoo area of the district. The attack caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle, which crashed into a gorge near Pouni’s Kanda region. The terrifying attack caused instant casualties and injuries among the passengers.
Official Reactions and Condemnations
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹10 lakh for the families of those slain and ₹50,000 for the injured. The declaration highlights the administration’s prompt action to assist the impacted families during this difficult time. President Droupadi Murmu was deeply saddened by the tragedy, describing it as a “crime against humanity” that must be strongly condemned. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, too, was quick to respond. He asked LG Sinha to closely monitor the issue and provide extensive aid to the victims’ relatives. PM Modi highlighted that the perpetrators of this horrific act would face severe consequences.
Union Minister Amit Shah, immediately after his oath-taking ceremony, condemned the attack, reiterating that those responsible would not be spared. Shah has been in constant communication with LG Sinha and DGP R R Swain to assess the situation and expedite measures to bring the attackers to justice.
Security Measures and Rescue Operations
SSP Sharma declared the incident a clear case of a terror attack and detailed the prompt rescue operations initiated. The injured were swiftly transported to nearby hospitals, and a detailed operation to identify and hunt down the terrorists was launched. The SSP mentioned that while the identities of the deceased and injured are yet to be confirmed, it is likely that they were from Uttar Pradesh.
Local residents played a crucial role in the immediate aftermath, assisting the victims and providing first-hand accounts of the attack. One survivor recounted how the bus was showered with 25 to 30 bullets before it veered off the road. Another witness saw a masked attacker, identifiable by a red muffler, shooting at the bus.
Enhanced Security Measures
In response to the attack, security forces have heightened their vigilance, particularly around the Shiv Khori temple. Regular area domination patrols are being conducted, and the Village Defence Guards have been put on high alert with frequent firing practice sessions.

Tragic Poonch Terror Attack Unfolds: Security Forces Launch Extensive Operation
In a targeted assault on Thursday, terrorists struck in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch, claiming the lives of four Indian Army soldiers and leaving at least three others injured. The aftermath has seen a relentless pursuit by security forces, who have now implemented a clampdown on mobile internet services in the Rajouri and Poonch districts.
Tumblr media
The operation, marked by increased aerial surveillance and intensified ground combing, is focusing particularly on the forest area of Dera ki Gali in the Rajouri sector of Poonch district. Officials have enlisted the aid of sniffer dogs in their efforts to track down the assailants responsible for ambushing two army vehicles.
The People's Anti-Fascist Front (PAFF) has claimed responsibility for the attack, sharing images on social media that highlight the use of sophisticated US-made M4 carbine assault rifles. Developed in the 1980s, the M4 carbine serves as the primary infantry weapon for the US Armed Forces and has been adopted by over 80 countries worldwide.
According to sources, the terrorists strategically chose the Dhatyar Morh location in Poonch due to a blind curve and bumpy road, causing army vehicles to slow down. Positioned atop a hill between Dhera Ki Gali and Bufliaz, the attackers fired upon the vehicles at this vulnerable point.
The tragedy has a personal dimension with the loss of Rifleman Gautam Kumar, who had just returned to duty from leave on December 16. Scheduled to be married on March 11, 2024, Gautam's family received the devastating news of his death on Thursday night. His elder brother, Rahul Kumar, expressed the family's deep sorrow as they mourn the untimely loss of the young soldier.
Opposition leaders have strongly condemned the Poonch terror attack, criticizing the central government's handling of security issues. Sanjay Raut, the outspoken MP from Shiv Sena (UBT), drew parallels between this incident and the 2019 Pulwama attack, emphasizing concerns over national security.
In response to the situation, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha asserted on Friday that the security situation in the Valley is comparatively better than that of West Bengal. Addressing an event in Kolkata, Sinha urged people to visit the state and witness the notable difference in security conditions.
