The NFL’s best remaining free agents
Tumblr media
Many of the top names have already agreed to deals, but as free agency officially begins, these are the top names available.
The NFL’s official start to their new league year is here, but due to the league’s negotiating or “legal tampering” period, many of the big-name free agents are already off the market. That’s because the negotiating period allows agents and teams to enter into contract talks even though pen cannot be put to paper until the start of the new league year.
Last year was a frenzy during the negotiating period, with most of the top players gone by the time the market actually opened. A whole bunch of deals were cemented right at 4 p.m. ET when the league year started, and that’s the case this year as well. Players can continue negotiating with other teams after agreeing in principle to a new deal — nothing is final until the contract is signed and submitted to the league office. But once something is reported as a done deal, there is minimal flip-flopping.
It’s likely this trend — the biggest players agreeing to deals before free agency actually starts — will continue.
That said, there are still plenty of good to great players still out there, waiting to find a team for the 2019 season. Below, we’re going to point you to the best still available — in alphabetical order — at each offensive and defensive position.
Quarterback
Signed: Derek Anderson, Blake Bortles, Teddy Bridgewater, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Nick Foles, Blaine Gabbert, Mike Glennon, Robert Griffin III, Ryan Griffin, Taylor Heinicke, Kevin Hogan, Brett Hundley, Sean Mannion, AJ McCarron, Tom Savage, Matt Schaub, Trevor Siemian, Geno Smith, Tyrod Taylor, Joe Webb Best Available: Colin Kaepernick
Nick Foles is getting paid a ton of money by the Jaguars, and after that the market gets a little bit stale. Obviously, the best available quarterback (Kaepernick) is probably not going to get signed, while another team will surely try and kick the tires on old standbys like McCown.
Others available: Sam Bradford, Matt Cassel, Josh Johnson, Josh McCown, Brock Osweiler, Mark Sanchez
Running Back
Signed: Ameer Abdullah, C.J. Anderson, Kenjon Barner, Le’Veon Bell, Alfred Blue, Tevin Coleman, Isaiah Crowell, Mike Davis, Andre Ellington, Frank Gore, Kareem Hunt, Carlos Hyde, Mark Ingram, Doug Martin, Ty Montgomery, Latavius Murray, Adrian Peterson, Spencer Ware, T.J. Yeldon, Zach Zenner Best Available: Jay Ajayi
There’s still a strong market for running backs, with young guys like Ajayi available. Even the players below all have shown they have something to offer.
Others available: LeGarrette Blount, Alfred Morris, Bilal Powell, Stevan Ridley, Darren Sproles
Wide Receiver
Signed: Danny Amendola, Tavon Austin, Cole Beasley, Josh Bellamy, John Brown, Randall Cobb, Chris Conley, Michael Crabtree, Jamison Crowder, Phillip Dorsett, Bruce Ellington, Larry Fitzgerald, Devin Funchess, Maurice Harris, Marvin Hall, Justin Hardy, Chris Hogan, Adam Humphries, Dontrelle Inman, Jordan Matthews, Donte Moncrief, J.J. Nelson, Cordarrelle Patterson, Breshad Perriman, Terrelle Pryor, Andre Roberts, Eli Rogers, Golden Tate, Demaryius Thomas, Kevin White, Tyrell Williams
The biggest names to change teams at the wide receiver position were not free agents — Antonio Brown and Odell Beckham Jr. were both traded — but there are still some talented pass catchers out there. Veterans like Crabtree are always looking to prove they still got it.
Available: Dez Bryant, Pierre Garcon, Jermaine Kearse, Rishard Matthews, De’Anthony Thomas, Mike Wallace, Terrance Williams
Tight End
Signed: Dwayne Allen, Nick Boyle, Charles Clay, Jared Cook, Tyler Eifert, Darren Fells, Demetrius Harris, Jeff Heuerman, Jesse James, Tyler Kroft, Matt LaCosse, Marcedes Lewis, James O’Shaughnessy, Logan Paulsen, Richard Rogers, Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Luke Stocker, Geoff Swaim, Levine Toilolo, Logan Thomas, C.J. Uzomah, Clive Walford, Maxx Williams, Luke Willson Best Available: Lance Kendricks
Most of what remains in the tight end market includes veterans who never quite developed as receiving threats or veterans who have a history of injuries. It’s not a great market, one of the weaker ones in recent years.
Others available: Antonio Gates, MarQueis Gray, Jermaine Gresham, Michael Hoomanawanui, Dion Sims
Offensive Line
Signed: Oday Aboushi, Jamon Brown, Trent Brown, James Carpenter, A.J. Cann, T.J. Clemmings, Nick Easton, Jon Feliciano, Ereck Flowers, D.J. Fluker, Ramon Foster, Max Garcia, Mark Glowinski, Denzelle Good, Jonotthan Harrison, Bobby Hart, Seantrel Henderson, Mike Iupati, Ja’Wuan James, Matt Kalil, Josh Kline, Eric Kush, Kendall Lamm, Ted Larsen, Spencer Long, Cornelius Lucas, Bobby Massie, John Miller, Mitch Morse, Ty Nsekhe, Cedric Ogbuehi, Michael Ola, Kevin Pamphile, Matt Paradis, Mike Person, Greg Robinson, Rodger Saffold, Ty Sambrailo, Brian Schwenke, Donovan Smith, Quinton Spain, J.R. Sweezy, Billy Turner, LaAdrian Waddle, Earl Watford, Daryl Williams, Stefen Wisniewski Best Available: Jeremy Parnell, Donald Penn, Ryan Schraeder
As usual, teams did their best to re-sign their own offensive linemen. It’s rare that a high-end tackle or guard makes it to free agency, and when they do, they are quickly snatched up, as was the case with Brown and Paradis.
Others available: Jeff Allen, Joe Barksdale, Chris Clark, Cameron Fleming, Garry Gilliam, Ryan Groy, Ulrick John, Jordan Mills, Marshall Newhouse, Tyler Shatley, John Sullivan, Travis Swanson, Josh Wells
Edge Rusher
Signed: Ezekiel Ansah, Jerry Attaochu, Shaq Barrett, Anthony Chickillo, Frank Clark (franchise tag), Adrian Clayborn, Jadeveon Clowney (franchise tag), Vinny Curry, Dee Ford, Trey Flowers, Dante Fowler Jr., Markus Golden, Brandon Graham, Eli Harold, Justin Houston, Bruce Irvin, DeMarcus Lawrence, Aaron Lynch, Cassius Marsh, Clay Matthews, Benson Mayowa, Pernell McPhee, Steven Means, Alex Okafor, Shane Ray, Brooks Reed, John Simon, Preston Smith, Za’Darius Smith, Terrell Suggs, Cameron Wake
Just look at the signings to determine the value of the edge rusher position in the NFL — all of the top players got franchise tags except for Flowers and Fowler, who were quickly locked up.
Available: Sam Acho, Connor Barwin, Kony Ealy, William Hayes, Michael Johnson, Dion Jordan, Matt Longacre, Derrick Morgan, Nick Perry, Frostee Rucker, Derrick Shelby, Frank Zombo
Defensive Tackle
Signed: Tyson Alualu, Henry Anderson, Angelo Blackson, Malcom Brown, Christian Covington, Carl Davis, Mario Edwards, Johnathan Hankins, Margus Hunt, Malik Jackson, Grady Jarrett (franchise tag), Timmy Jernigan, Brandon Mebane, Mike Pennel, Jordan Phillips, Darius Philon, Sheldon Richardson, Danny Shelton, Shamar Stephen, Ndamukong Suh, Brent Urban Best Available: Corey Liuget, Gerald McCoy, Muhammad Wilkerson
There weren’t many top-end defensive tackle talents available in free agency. The ones who have had recent success on the field either agreed to terms quickly, or were given the franchise tag.
Others available: Allen Bailey, Tyeler Davison, Dominique Easley, Rodney Gunter, Ziggy Hood, Ricky Jean-Francois, Zach Kerr, Earl Mitchell, Ahtyba Rubin
Linebacker
Signed: Kwon Alexander, Ray-Ray Armstrong, Anthony Barr, Mark Barron, Preston Brown, Deone Bucannon, Vontaze Burfict, Bruce Carter, Jamie Collins, Thomas Davis, L.J. Fort, Neville Hewitt, Jordan Hicks, Mike Hull, Mychal Kendricks, Justin March-Lillard, David Mayo, Brandon Marshall, C.J. Mosley, Denzel Perryman, Jake Ryan, Craig Robertson, Adarius Taylor, Damien Wilson, Paul Worrilow, K.J. Wright Best Available: Gerald Hodges
C.J. Mosley, Kwon Alexander, and Anthony Barr got big-time deals to kick off free agency and there’s still a few quality players left on the market — especially for teams looking for run stoppers.
Others available: Stephone Anthony, Josh Bynes, Will Compton, Kyle Emanuel, Najee Goode, Cameron Lynch, Kevin Minter, Mark Nzeocha, Kevin Pierre-Louis, Vincent Rey, Kelvin Sheppard, Nathan Stupar, Manti Te’o, Ramik Wilson
Cornerback
Signed: Robert Alford, Justin Bethel, Briean Boddy-Calhoun, Bashaud Breeland,Tramaine Brock, Bryce Callahan, Justin Coleman, Ronald Darby, Darqueze Dennard, Pierre Desir, E.J. Gaines, Phillip Gaines, Antonio Hamilton, Kareem Jackson, Kevin Johnson, Nevin Lawson, Tony Lippett, Jason McCourty, Rashaan Melvin, Steven Nelson, Brian Poole, Darryl Roberts, Bradley Roby, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Eric Rowe, Buster Skrine, Jason Verrett, B.W. Webb, Blidi Wreh-Wilson Best Available: Morris Claiborne
There weren’t many big-name cornerbacks on the market this year, but there are still a few names who can help defensive units. Teams looking for a quality cornerback that isn’t a world-beater, but still effective should be able to find some value in free agency.
Others available: Brent Grimes, Davon House, Captain Munnerlyn, Orlando Scandrick, Sam Shields, Kayvon Webster, Shareece Wright
Safety
Signed: Jahleel Addae, Adrian Amos, Chris Banjo, Antoine Bethea, Terrence Brooks, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Landon Collins, Clayton Geathers, Tashaun Gipson, George Iloka, Colin Jones, LaMarcus Joyner, Tyrann Mathieu, Adrian Phillips, Eric Reid, Curtis Riley, Andrew Sendejo, Earl Thomas, Kenny Vaccaro, Jaylen Watkins, Jimmie Ward, Eric Weddle Best Available: Eric Berry, Tre Boston, Morgan Burnett, Johnathan Cyprien, Glover Quin
Yet another strong year for the safety position, and this time, they didn’t wait around to get deals done. Notable guys like Landon Collins and Tyrann Mathieu made it to the open market, and quickly agreed to deals with their new teams. However, there is still some meat left on the bone at the position.
Others available: Mike Adams, Kurt Coleman, Chris Conte, Marcus Gilchrist, Kendrick Lewis, Mike Mitchell, Reggie Nelson, Ron Parker, Darian Stewart

The 2018 NFL Draft was a historic one for quarterbacks with four picked in the top 10 for the first time in nearly seven decades. By the end of the weekend, 13 passers heard their name called.
For the five who went in the first round, the expectation is that they’ll be the franchise quarterback the team can be build around. For five more quarterbacks, there’s a difficult path ahead that could end with a starting job but likely just a backup role. And for three, even a backup job will be difficult.
So let’s rank the situations that 13 quarterbacks will walk into from No. 1 pick Baker Mayfield to Seattle’s seventh-round selection Alex McGough — a totally real person that the Seahawks definitely didn’t just make up:
Faces of the franchise
1. Baker Mayfield – Cleveland Browns
It’s easy to make the “poor guy has to play for [insert worst NFL team] heh heh” joke about whoever goes No. 1. But usually a team is terrible because of quarterback issues and it was DeShone Kizer’s awful season that dragged down the Browns most in 2017.
Kizer’s league-leading 22 interceptions and 60.5 passer rating — the worst for a full-time starter since Joey Harrington’s 59.9 in 2002 — spoiled a defense that finished No. 14 in the NFL and a rushing offense that averaged the sixth most yards per carry.
The Browns kept improving the roster this offseason with Jarvis Landry, Damarious Randall, Denzel Ward, Nick Chubb and E.J. Gaines among the players added.
Mayfield will have the unlikely task of beating out Tyrod Taylor — a veteran starter who was already guaranteed the job — if he hopes to lead that team in 2018. A likelier scenario is Mayfield sits for a while and takes over when he’s ready. Considering the talent on the roster, it’s a situation that could be a whole lot better than the jokes make it seem.
2. Lamar Jackson – Baltimore Ravens
It’s still Joe Flacco’s team in Baltimore, but the investment in Jackson made it clear that’s a temporary situation. His cap hits in 2019 and 2020 mean the Ravens have the freedom to toss the keys to the offense over to Jackson whenever they feel he’s up for the task.
That gives Baltimore the luxury of patience while preparing to unleash a unique talent in Jackson. He’ll work with Marty Mornhinweg, a coach who has spent decades working with quarterbacks including, Brett Favre, Steve Young and Michael Vick.
For now, it’s an offense that needs more work.
Michael Crabtree, Willie Snead, John Brown, Hayden Hurst and Mark Andrews were all added, but the team doesn’t really have a legitimate No. 1 receiver yet. That will be a priority in the next couple years to help Jackson along.
3. Sam Darnold – New York Jets
A year ago, plenty of people were convinced the Jets were gearing up to tank the 2017 season for the chance to draft Sam Darnold. The quarterback was even asked about it in August and Jets fans ordered jerseys close to a year in advance.
New York didn’t end up being as bad as people thought they’d be, but here they are with Darnold anyway.
Even with receiver Quincy Enunwa lost for the year in preseason, the combination of Robby Anderson and Jermaine Kearse made for decent receiving options for Josh McCown to target. Anderson has had difficulty staying out of trouble, but the return of Enunwa and the addition of Terrelle Pryor make for a young group with a lot of potential.
Like Mayfield and Jackson, Darnold has a capable starter in front of him in McCown. That’s a good thing, because Darnold has a lot of growing to do, but there’s a young nucleus of talent that the Jets can be excited about.
4. Josh Allen – Buffalo Bills
While the four other quarterbacks taken in the first round have established veterans ahead of them on the depth chart, Allen only has AJ McCarron and Nathan Peterman to battle for the starting job.
That’d be a little more exciting if Allen was as NFL-ready as Mayfield or Josh Rosen. It’s a little dangerous when the Wyoming product is as raw and as far from ready as Allen. The safest guess is that it’ll be McCarron starting Week 1, but if he struggles it could be the team’s No. 7 overall pick who gets thrust into action.
The offense isn’t that bad for a rookie quarterback, though. It could use more receivers, but Kelvin Benjamin is the kind of big-bodied pass catcher that could help Allen out. The offensive line lost Richie Incognito, but is still better than other teams on this list. And the real strength is that the Buffalo offense will still lean heavily on LeSean McCoy and the running game.
Still, it’d be a whole lot better for the Bills if Allen had time to figure things out more.
5. Josh Rosen – Arizona Cardinals
Reminder: this isn’t an indictment on Rosen, who I believe is the best passer of this draft class. It’s just to say that this could be quite the uphill climb for the No. 10 overall pick in Arizona.
The good news is that he has David Johnson in the backfield with him, the Cardinals added an exciting receiver in Christian Kirk, and Sam Bradford is a veteran who could help Rosen. The bad news is everything else.
Arizona’s offensive line ranked 31st in 2017, according to PFF, and needed much more than just the signing of Justin Pugh to make things right.
The hallmark of Arizona’s offense for more than a decade has been Larry Fitzgerald, but he’ll be 35 before the 2018 season starts and will probably retire at the end of the year. That’d leave a receiving corps of Kirk, Chad Williams, Brice Butler and JJ Nelson.
It’s not an offense with much for Rosen to work with, and Bradford’s lengthy injury history means the rookie could see the field sooner rather than later. Rosen was often on his own on a UCLA team that didn’t do him many favors. That may be the case in Arizona too.
A difficult path to a starting job
6. Kyle Lauletta – New York Giants
If Odell Beckham Jr. is a player the Giants commit to and make sure he stays with the organization, the skill position group in New York is really exciting.
Forget draft capital for a second.
There is a team with (age when season starts)
Odell Beckham – 25 years old Saquon Barkley – 21 years old Evan Engram – 24 years old Sterling Shepard – 25 years old
Good luck covering that
— Eliot Crist (@EliotCrist) April 27, 2018
The offensive line has been a problem for a while and still isn’t quite fixed, but signing Nate Solder and drafting Will Hernandez is a great start. It should give Eli Manning a boost in the final years of his career, but the quarterback is 37 now and the Giants are going to need to find his successor.
Lauletta will have a chance to compete for that role. His competition for now is 2017 third-round pick Davis Webb, although it wouldn’t be surprising if the Giants went after another quarterback in upcoming drafts.
Someone is going to have to take over for Eli soon. Lauletta’s probably not the favorite, but he’ll have a chance to prove he can be.
7. Mason Rudolph – Pittsburgh Steelers
Like Lauletta in New York, Rudolph will be in competition with a mid-round selection to be the successor for a quarterback who is in his final seasons. Ben Roethlisberger is 36 and has been contemplating retirement in the last couple years.
Battling to eventually take over will be Rudolph, 2017 fourth-round pick Joshua Dobbs, and 2013 fourth-round pick Landry Jones. It seems inevitable that either Dobbs or Jones will be released before the 2018 season begins, and Rudolph has to be considered the favorite for the future starting job, for now.
He’s the first quarterback the Steelers have taken in the top 100 picks of the NFL Draft since Roethlisberger, although — like other teams on this list — Pittsburgh could go back to the well in a bigger way in upcoming drafts.
But Rudolph will have a chance to impress on a roster that’s always geared up to compete.
8. Danny Etling – New England Patriots
Good roster around him? Check.
Good quarterback to learn from? Check.
Good coaching to get him prepared? Check.
The only other quarterbacks on the New England roster are Tom Brady, who turns 41 in August and Brian Hoyer who turns 33 in October. So Etling will have every opportunity to prove he’s the quarterback of the future for the Patriots.
I realize that sounds a little ridiculous considering Etling is a seventh-round pick and they usually have their work cut out of for them to make the roster, let alone become a franchise staple. But Brady was a sixth-round pick and Hoyer was undrafted, so who knows?
The negative for Etling is that the Patriots will probably invest in the quarterback position in a bigger way in the next year or two. So his path to New England superstardom will still be a hell of a climb.
9. Tanner Lee – Jacksonville Jaguars
An argument could easily be made that Jacksonville has the best roster in the NFL. The least impressive position group on the team is its group of quarterbacks: Blake Bortles, Cody Kessler and Tanner Lee.
Lee was among the nation’s leaders in interceptions thrown during his 2017 season at Nebraska and there aren’t high hopes that he’ll solve the Jaguars’ quarterback concerns. But like Etling in New England, the path to surprise everyone is in front of him.
The Jaguars lean on defense and running the ball with Leonard Fournette, and are still hopeful that Bortles will eventually play like a franchise quarterback. But if he doesn’t soon, it’ll be someone else’s job.
Lee will need to leave his turnover-prone ways in the past if he wants any shot at the job, and … don’t hold your breath.
10. Logan Woodside – Cincinnati Bengals
The Bengals offensive line got better with the additions of Cordy Glenn and Billy Price, and has a legitimate No. 1 receiver in A.J. Green. The reason Woodside doesn’t get a higher spot here is because it’s going to be really difficult for him to earn a roster spot, let alone eventually start for the Bengals.
Andy Dalton’s leash is getting shorter and can be cut after the 2018 or 2019 seasons with no dead money under the salary cap. His inability to lead the Bengals to a single postseason win will eventually catch up to him and Cincinnati could be ready to look for another option.
But 2016 draft pick Jeff Driskel has already shown good things in preseason and has a two-year head start on Woodside. And if the Bengals do move on from Dalton, they’ll want more than just late-round picks ready to take over.
Battle for a backup job
11. Luke Falk – Tennessee Titans
It would be surprising if Marcus Mariota doesn’t end up being the quarterback of the future for the Titans. It’s not impossible considering his injury history and his struggles in 2017 with 13 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. But for now, Falk doesn’t have a path to the starting lineup and will battle Blaine Gabbert and Tyler Ferguson to be the long-term backup for Mariota.
If he gets the job, there’s a strong chance he’ll be thrust into action as Mariota hasn’t finished a 16-game season yet in his career.
And in Tennessee, he’d be behind one of the NFL’s best offensive lines with a powerful running back at his side in Derrick Henry.
12. Mike White – Dallas Cowboys
The goal for the Cowboys is to surround Dak Prescott with the tools to be the long-term solution at quarterback in Dallas. So White really has no chance at wrestling that job away.
It’s also going to be difficult to top Cooper Rush for the backup job considering how good the undrafted second-year player looked in preseason as a rookie. Rush finished preseason with six touchdowns and no interceptions, wrestling the backup job from Kellen Moore.
The Cowboys offensive line makes the Cowboys a dream landing spot for a quarterback, but White has his work cut out for him.
13. Alex McGough – Seattle Seahawks
Russell Wilson is the player the Seahawks are built around, and he won’t be giving up the job any time soon. To be his backup, McGough is going to have to beat out Austin Davis and Stephen Morris.
But if McGough was ever thrust into action, he better be ready to run because the Seahawks offensive line is still a work in progress.

Quarterback
Signed: Derek Anderson, Blake Bortles, Teddy Bridgewater, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Nick Foles, Blaine Gabbert, Mike Glennon, Robert Griffin III, Ryan Griffin, Taylor Heinicke, Kevin Hogan, Brett Hundley, Sean Mannion, EJ Manuel, AJ McCarron, Tom Savage, Matt Schaub, Trevor Siemian, Tyrod Taylor, Joe Webb Best Available: Colin Kaepernick
Nick Foles is getting paid a ton of money by the Jaguars, and after that the market gets a little bit stale. Obviously, the best available quarterback (Kaepernick) is probably not going to get signed, while another team will surely try and kick the tires on old standbys like McCown.
Others available: Sam Bradford, Matt Cassel, Josh Johnson, Josh McCown, Brock Osweiler, Mark Sanchez, Geno Smith
Running Back
Signed: Ameer Abdullah, C.J. Anderson, Kenjon Barner, Le’Veon Bell, Alfred Blue, Tevin Coleman, Isaiah Crowell, Mike Davis, Andre Ellington, Frank Gore, Kareem Hunt, Carlos Hyde, Mark Ingram, Ty Montgomery,Latavius Murray, Adrian Peterson, T.J. Yeldon, Zach Zenner Best Available: Jay Ajayi
There’s still a strong market for running backs, with young guys like Ajayi available. Even the players below all have shown they have something to offer.
Others available: LeGarrette Blount, Doug Martin, Alfred Morris, Bilal Powell, Stevan Ridley, Darren Sproles, Jonathan Stewart, Spencer Ware
Wide Receiver
Signed: Danny Amendola, Tavon Austin, Cole Beasley, Josh Bellamy, John Brown, Randall Cobb, Chris Conley, Jamison Crowder, Phillip Dorsett, Bruce Ellington, Larry Fitzgerald, Devin Funchess, Maurice Harris, Marvin Hall, Justin Hardy, Chris Hogan, Adam Humphries, Jordan Matthews, Donte Moncrief, J.J. Nelson, Cordarrelle Patterson, Breshad Perriman, Andre Roberts, Eli Rogers, Golden Tate, Demaryius Thomas, Kevin White, Tyrell Williams Best Available: Michael Crabtree
The biggest names to change teams at the wide receiver position were not free agents — Antonio Brown and Odell Beckham Jr. were both traded — but there are still some talented pass catchers out there. Veterans like Crabtree are always looking to prove they still got it.
Others available: Dez Bryant, Pierre Garcon, Dontrelle Inman, Jermaine Kearse, Rishard Matthews, De’Anthony Thomas, Mike Wallace, Terrance Williams
Tight End
Signed: Dwayne Allen, Nick Boyle, Charles Clay, Jared Cook, Tyler Eifert, Darren Fells, Demetrius Harris, Jeff Heuerman, Jesse James, Tyler Kroft, Matt LaCosse, Marcedes Lewis, James O’Shaughnessy, Logan Paulsen, Richard Rogers, Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Luke Stocker, Geoff Swaim, Logan Thomas, C.J. Uzomah, Clive Walford, Luke Willson Best Available: Lance Kendricks, Maxx Williams
Most of what remains in the tight end market includes veterans who never quite developed as receiving threats or veterans who have a history of injuries. It’s not a great market, one of the weaker ones in recent years.
Others available: Antonio Gates, MarQueis Gray, Jermaine Gresham, Michael Hoomanawanui, Dion Sims, Levin Toilolo
Offensive Line
Signed: Oday Aboushi, Jamon Brown, Trent Brown, James Carpenter, A.J. Cann, Nick Easton, Jon Feliciano, Ereck Flowers, D.J. Fluker, Ramon Foster, Max Garcia, Mark Glowinski, Denzelle Good, Jonotthan Harrison, Bobby Hart, Seantrel Henderson, Mike Iupati, Ja’Wuan James, Matt Kalil, Josh Kline, Eric Kush, Kendall Lamm, Ted Larsen, Spencer Long, Cornelius Lucas, Bobby Massie, John Miller, Mitch Morse, Ty Nsekhe, Cedric Ogbuehi, Michael Ola, Kevin Pamphile, Matt Paradis, Mike Person, Greg Robinson, Rodger Saffold, Ty Sambrailo, Brian Schwenke, Donovan Smith, J.R. Sweezy, Billy Turner, LaAdrian Waddle, Earl Watford, Daryl Williams Best Available: Jeremy Parnell, Donald Penn, Ryan Schraeder
As usual, teams did their best to re-sign their own offensive linemen. It’s rare that a high-end tackle or guard makes it to free agency, and when they do, they are quickly snatched up, as was the case with Brown and Paradis.
Others available: Jeff Allen, Joe Barksdale, T.J. Clemmings, Chris Clark, Cameron Fleming, Garry Gilliam, Ryan Groy, Ulrick John, Andy Levitre, Jordan Mills, Marshall Newhouse, Tyler Shatley, Quinton Spain, John Sullivan, Travis Swanson, Jared Veldheer, Josh Wells, Stefen Wisniewski
Edge Rusher
Signed: Jerry Attaochu, Shaq Barrett, Anthony Chickillo, Frank Clark (franchise tag), Adrian Clayborn, Jadeveon Clowney (franchise tag), Vinny Curry, Dee Ford, Trey Flowers, Dante Fowler Jr., Markus Golden, Brandon Graham, Eli Harold, Justin Houston, Bruce Irvin, DeMarcus Lawrence, Aaron Lynch, Cassius Marsh, Clay Matthews, Benson Mayowa, Steven Means, Alex Okafor, Brooks Reed, John Simon, Preston Smith, Za’Darius Smith, Terrell Suggs, Cameron Wake Best Available: Ezekiel Ansah, Shane Ray
Just look at the signings to determine the value of the edge rusher position in the NFL — all of the top players got franchise tags except for Flowers and Fowler, who were quickly locked up.
Others available: Sam Acho, Connor Barwin, Kony Ealy, William Hayes, Michael Johnson, Dion Jordan, Matt Longacre, Pernell McPhee, Derrick Morgan, Nick Perry, Frostee Rucker, Derrick Shelby, Frank Zombo
Defensive Tackle
Signed: Tyson Alualu, Henry Anderson, Angelo Blackson, Malcom Brown, Christian Covington, Carl Davis, Mario Edwards, Johnathan Hankins, Margus Hunt, Malik Jackson, Grady Jarrett (franchise tag), Timmy Jernigan, Brandon Mebane, Mike Pennel, Jordan Phillips, Darius Philon, Sheldon Richardson, Shamar Stephen, Brent Urban Best Available: Corey Liuget, Ndamukong Suh, Muhammad Wilkerson
There weren’t many top-end defensive tackle talents available in free agency. The ones who have had recent success on the field either agreed to terms quickly, or were given the franchise tag.
Others available: Allen Bailey, Tyeler Davison, Dominique Easley, Rodney Gunter, Ziggy Hood, Ricky Jean-Francois, Zach Kerr, Earl Mitchell, Ahtyba Rubin, Danny Shelton
Linebacker
Signed: Kwon Alexander, Ray-Ray Armstrong, Anthony Barr, Mark Barron, Preston Brown, Deone Bucannon, Vontaze Burfict, Bruce Carter, Thomas Davis, , L.J. Fort, Neville Hewitt, Jordan Hicks, Mike Hull, Mychal Kendricks, Justin March-Lillard, David Mayo, Brandon Marshall, C.J. Mosley, Denzel Perryman, Jake Ryan, Craig Robertson, Adarius Taylor, Damien Wilson, Paul Worrilow, K.J. Wright Best Available: Jamie Collins, Gerald Hodges
C.J. Mosley, Kwon Alexander, and Anthony Barr got big-time deals to kick off free agency and there’s still a few quality players left on the market — especially for teams looking for run stoppers.
Others available: Stephone Anthony, Josh Bynes, Will Compton, Kyle Emanuel, Najee Goode, Cameron Lynch, Kevin Minter, Mark Nzeocha, Kevin Pierre-Louis, Vincent Rey, Kelvin Sheppard, Nathan Stupar, Manti Te’o, Ramik Wilson
Cornerback
Signed: Robert Alford, Justin Bethel, Briean Boddy-Calhoun, Bashaud Breeland,Tramaine Brock, Bryce Callahan, Justin Coleman, Ronald Darby, Darqueze Dennard, Pierre Desir, E.J.
Safety
Signed: Adrian Amos, Chris Banjo, Antoine Bethea, Terrence Brooks, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Landon Collins, Clayton Geathers, Tashaun Gipson, George Iloka, Colin Jones, LaMarcus Joyner, Tyrann Mathieu, Adrian Phillips, Eric Reid, Curtis Riley, Andrew Sendejo, Earl Thomas, Kenny Vaccaro, Jaylen Watkins, Jimmie Ward, Eric Weddle Best Available: Eric Berry, Tre Boston, Morgan Burnett, Johnathan Cyprien, Glover Quin
Yet another strong year for the safety position, and this time, they didn’t wait around to get deals done. Notable guys like Landon Collins and Tyrann Mathieu made it to the open market, and quickly agreed to deals with their new teams. However, there is still some meat left on the bone at the position.
Others available: Mike Adams, Jahleel Addae, Kurt Coleman, Chris Conte, Marcus Gilchrist, Kendrick Lewis, Mike Mitchell, Reggie Nelson, Ron Parker, Darian Stewart

Chiefs’ poor discipline lead Jets to wild 38-31 win
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Josh McCown scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak with 2:15 left, and the New York Jets bounced back from a brutal start to hold on for a wild and wacky 38-31 win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.
Chandler Catanzaro kicked a 21-yard field goal to put the Jets (5-7) ahead with 3:55 left. But Kansas City’s Bennie Logan was called for a personal foul for hitting long snapper Thomas Hennessy on the play. That gave the Jets the ball at the 1 with a new set of downs.
After two running plays, McCown threw incomplete — but Steven Nelson was penalized for defensive holding, making it first-and-goal from the 2. Three plays later, McCown kept the ball and shoved his way into the end zone.
McCown’s pass on the 2-point conversion was incomplete, but Nelson was called for holding. An enraged Marcus Peters picked up the penalty flag and tossed it away, drawing an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Elijah McGuire ran it in moments later to convert the 2-point play and make it 38-31.
McCown finished with 331 yards passing and a touchdown to Matt Forte, and ran for two scores — including the winner. Jermaine Kearse had nine catches for 157 yards and Robby Anderson caught eight passes for 107 yards as the Jets dominated in time of possession, but still had to hold their breath in the end.
After Tyreek Hill’s 40-yard catch put the ball at the Jets 23, Smith completed a 4-yard pass to Travis Kelce, who had two early touchdowns. But Smith was then incomplete on three straight passes.
The loss by the Chiefs (6-6) ruined the return of cornerback Darrelle Revis, who made his debut with Kansas City after signing a two-year deal last week. Revis, who played eight years over two stints with the Jets, started for the Chiefs, but spent the second half on the sideline.
Kansas City has dropped six of its last seven after opening the season 5-0. Meanwhile, New York kept its faint playoff hopes alive by snapping a two-game skid and holding on to a fourth-quarter lead. The Jets had blown leads in the fourth quarter of three of their last four losses.
Hill had put the Chiefs ahead 31-30 on a 40-yard touchdown catch. The drive was helped by a personal foul penalty on the Jets’ ArDarius Stewart on the kickoff.
Smith finished with 366 yards passing, with four TD tosses, two to Hill, who had six receptions for 185 yards.
After Harrison Butker’s 36-yard field goal gave the Chiefs a 17-14 lead, McCown led the Jets to a go-ahead 11-yard touchdown pass to Matt Forte. Catanzaro’s 27-yarder late in the third quarter put New York ahead 24-17, capping an 18-play, 72-yard drive that took 9 minutes, 31 seconds to open the second half.
But the Chiefs struck back on their next play from scrimmage, Smith finding Hill, who zipped past Rashard Robinson in coverage, for a 79-yard touchdown to tie the game.
Catanzaro booted a 47-yarder on New York’s next possession. He added a 38-yarder early in the fourth quarter to make it 30-24.
STARTING FAST
Smith and the Chiefs got things going early, marching 75 yards on five plays — capping the drive with a 22-yard touchdown catch by a wide-open Kelce 2:38 into the game.
ESPN reported before the game that Chiefs coach Andy Reid was handing the offensive play-calling duties to coordinator Matt Nagy, and it appeared to work well early. Smith found Kelce — wide open, again — to make it 14-0 less than five minutes in.
The Jets showed some signs of life, though, with Bilal Powell scoring on a 1-yard run in the opening quarter one play after McGuire’s 9-yard touchdown run was overturned by video review, which showed that the rookie running back’s left foot stepped out of bounds at the 1.
New York had another impressive drive to tie it at 14 late in the opening quarter, capped by McCown’s sneak from 1 yard.
RUNNING MAN
Smith helped set up a field goal for the Chiefs when he scrambled out of trouble on second-and-10 from the 14 for a career-best 70 yards late in the second quarter. It was the Chiefs’ longest run of the season, but not the best ever by a Kansas City quarterback. That was Steve Bono’s 76-yarder against Arizona in 1995.
GROUNDED JETS
New York linebacker Darron Lee was a surprise inactive, which Todd Bowles called a coach’s decision. Also, defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson was benched for most of the first quarter — also a coach’s decision — before entering with 39 seconds left before the second period.
STREAK STOPPED
Butker was wide right on a 38-yard attempt that grazed the right upright in the second quarter. It ended Butker’s franchise record of 23 straight field goals made. Butker’s only previous miss was a 46-yarder against Washington on the first attempt of his NFL career.
INJURIES
Chiefs: Center Mitch Morse was carted to the locker room with an unspecified injury. Zach Fulton replaced him and Bryan Witzmann took over Fulton’s spot at left guard.
UP NEXT
Chiefs: home vs. Oakland next Sunday.
Jets: at Denver next Sunday.

When I say two words to you, “Malcolm Butler” you instantly think of him intercepting the game winning pass in Super Bowl XLIX. What people do not see is the scrappy player who got over looked by everyone and was written off. Malcolm was almost living in his mom’s house until he started showing some flash heading into the preseason of 2014. As soon as he did that, Coach Belichick noticed and immediately saved a spot for him. Again nobody saw the hard work and countless effort he kept putting in.
COLLEGE BALL
In 2009 Brady was coming off of a season ending ACL tear and the Patriots went onto be 10-6 on the season. The Patriots were knocked out of the Divisional Round against Baltimore. For Malcolm Butler on the other hand, he was playing football as a freshman at Hinds Community College located in Raymond, Mississippi. Butler was having an outstanding season, but was kicked off the team after week 5 for reasons unknown. Even though he only played in 5 games, he recorded 22 tackles and 1 interception.
#gallery-0-5 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-5 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-5 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-5 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Butler had a pretty up and down college career after this, transferring to Alcorn State, back to Hinds, and finally landed at University of West Alabama where he had a solid career at. He ended up starting all 12 games his Junior year and had an exceptional season in 2012. He recorded 49 tackles, five Interceptions, and averaged a team high for special teams 29.8 yards per return. Then in 2013 which was his Senior year he simply balled out again, recorded 45 tackles, two field goals, and one blocked field goal. In 2013 he was named “Beyond Sports All-American” which is a prestige honor for a Division II school.
LANDING WITH THE PATRIOTS
Going into the 2014 season, Butler was making the Patriots coaches open their eyes and wowing them with his uncanny ability to always sniff out the ball. At one point in time then Corner for the Pats Darrelle Revis called the un-drafted rookie Malcolm Butler “Scrappy”. Revis gave the rookie that nickname because Butler always had a knack for the ball, and would always find himself making a play. Butler is famous for hustling hard in practices, and playing  harder in the game even if he is barely playing.
Throughout his rookie year, he was basically a bench warmer and never really played. Butler had appeared in a total of 11 games, recorded 15 tackles, and 3 passes defended. In the 2014 season the Patriots were extremely strong at the Cornerback position. Butler was overshadowed by veteran Corners, Darrelle Revis, Brandon Browner, Kyle Arrington, Alfonzo Dennard, and Logan Ryan. Even though he was overshadowed, Butler made his first start ever in the NFL against Miami on December 10, 2014.
Butler’s now partner in crime Logan Ryan had even over shadowed Malcolm. Ryan was a 3rd round pick selection in 2013 NFL draft and was known to have the same trait as Butler. That knack being he always had a nose for the ball, but both players had seen the most action in the playoffs. Dennard was shipped out of town, and Kyle Arrington was a streaky player. Had Kyle been burned once on a route in a game he ultimately would suffer and in my opinion was the achilles heal of that 2014 defense.
SUPERBOWL XLIX
February 2nd, 2015 Malcolm had arguably the best day of his life.  We all remember Chris Mathews for the Seahawks, a man that was virtually a no-body just like Butler. Mathews burned Kyle Arrington left, right, up, down, front to back, side to side. But boy did all of NE cringe when we saw that happen, this nobody player burned the Pats stout secondary. Something we were not used to seeing that season. It is the 4th quarter and Malcolm gets burned in waining minutes of SB XLIX, Russell Wilson drops back to pass and throws a bomb down field that was caught by Jermaine Kearse of Seattle.
That catch was the craziest catch I personally have ever seen in my life. It was more than crazy, it was the most ridiculous catch, not as ridiculous as the helmet catch, but it’s close. I remember I am at Ronnie’s house watching this game. When that catch had happened all the air was sucked out of that house. You could feel the tension, you could just feel the let down. I remember my Dad, and Ronnie both mutter the same words “I cannot believe that just happened…” Then my dad mutters “On the same field and same end of the field as the helmet catch.” All of NE felt the exact same way, “I cannot believe this is happening”.
A couple of plays later Marshawn Lynch all but takes Seattle to the promise land. Basically winning the game, and getting tackled by Hightower at the 1 yard line. I remember Seattle tried to kill out the clock, willing to risk it all on essentially one play. They were so cocky about it too. Just sitting there smiling, and laughing acting as if they just won the game. Then finally Wilson lines the team up at the line of scrimmage, and he’s looking at the play clock.
Then maybe 2-3 seconds before he hikes the ball, I muttered out “We have to light a fire”. I said that because I glanced at Ronnie’s fireplace, and when I did I noticed zero fire. There was that one burning piece of wood that had no flame, it was just scorching hot. Once I was done doing that, Wilson hikes the ball, and Butler jumps the route. Not only does he jump it, he picks it off and makes the game saving play. Butler was that burning piece of wood, he lit that fire and he won the game.
New England went onto win it all 28-24, it was one hell-of-a-game. I hope and pray that the Patriots are fortunate enough to win it all tonight in Super Bowl LI. My X factor for tonight is Malcolm, if the Pats win its because he kept a lid on Julio Jones. All I can say is, “We’re onto Atlanta”. GO PATS!
Part 2 will be coming soon in the upcoming days after tonights game, Super Bowl LI. Be sure to follow us on Twitter at, @iAMmarkSaberJr, @patriotsextra, and @BostonSportsPub to get the best coverage for the New England Patriots.
The Man Inside the Helmet Part 1/2 By: Mark Saber Jr. When I say two words to you, "Malcolm Butler" you instantly think of him intercepting the game winning pass in Super Bowl XLIX.

Quarterback
Signed: Derek Anderson, Blake Bortles, Teddy Bridgewater, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Nick Foles, Mike Glennon, Robert Griffin III, Ryan Griffin, Taylor Heinicke, Kevin Hogan, Brett Hundley, EJ Manuel, AJ McCarron, Matt Schaub, Trevor Siemian, Tyrod Taylor, Joe Webb Best Available: Colin Kaepernick
Nick Foles is getting paid a ton of money by the Jaguars, and after that the market gets a little bit stale. Obviously, the best available quarterback (Kaepernick) is probably not going to get signed, while another team will surely try and kick the tires on old standbys like McCown.
Others available: Sam Bradford, Matt Cassel, Blaine Gabbert, Josh Johnson, Sean Mannion, Josh McCown, Brock Osweiler, Mark Sanchez, Tom Savage, Geno Smith
Running Back
Signed: Ameer Abdullah, C.J. Anderson, Kenjon Barner, Le’Veon Bell, Alfred Blue, Tevin Coleman, Isaiah Crowell, Mike Davis, Andre Ellington, Frank Gore, Kareem Hunt, Carlos Hyde, Mark Ingram, Latavius Murray, Adrian Peterson, Zach Zenner Best Available: Jay Ajayi, Marshawn Lynch, T.J. Yeldon
There’s still a strong market for running backs, with young guys like Ajayi and Yeldon available. It’s a strong group of running backs, and even the players below all have shown they have something to offer.
Others available: LeGarrette Blount, Doug Martin, Alfred Morris, Ty Montgomery, Bilal Powell, Stevan Ridley, Darren Sproles, Jonathan Stewart, Spencer Ware
Wide Receiver
Signed: Danny Amendola, Tavon Austin, Cole Beasley, Josh Bellamy, John Brown, Randall Cobb, Chris Conley, Jamison Crowder, Phillip Dorsett, Bruce Ellington, Larry Fitzgerald, Devin Funchess, Maurice Harris, Marvin Hall, Justin Hardy, Adam Humphries, Jordan Matthews, Donte Moncrief, J.J. Nelson, Cordarrelle Patterson, Breshad Perriman, Andre Roberts, Eli Rogers, Golden Tate, Kevin White, Tyrell Williams Best Available: Michael Crabtree
The biggest names to change teams at the wide receiver position were not free agents — Antonio Brown and Odell Beckham Jr. were both traded — but there are still some talented pass catchers out there. Veterans like Crabtree are always looking to prove they still got it.
Others available: Dez Bryant, Pierre Garcon, Chris Hogan, Dontrelle Inman, Jermaine Kearse, Rishard Matthews, De’Anthony Thomas, Demaryius Thomas, Mike Wallace, Terrance Williams
Tight End
Signed: Dwayne Allen, Nick Boyle, Charles Clay, Jared Cook, Tyler Eifert, Darren Fells, Demetrius Harris, Jeff Heuerman, Jesse James, Tyler Kroft, Matt LaCosse, Marcedes Lewis, James O’Shaughnessy, Logan Paulsen, Richard Rogers, Luke Stocker, Geoff Swaim, Logan Thomas, C.J. Uzomah, Clive Walford, Luke Willson Best Available: Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Lance Kendricks, Maxx Williams
