Even as the Election Commission on Tuesday finally released final voter turnout data for the first two phases of the Lok Sabha polls after an unprecedented delay, it remains under the scanner as some Opposition leaders questioned the increase in the final figures over the provisional numbers released on the polling days.

Some have also pointed out that the data released by the Election Commission for the phase s held on April 19 and April 26 does not include the total number of electors or citizens registered to vote in each constituency – a practice that was followed even in the last Lok Sabha polls in 2019.

Experts were of the unanimous opinion that the delay in releasing the numbers was unusual. However, opinion on the other concerns was divided.

“The people of Chhindwara have given me a big responsibility,” Sahu stated. “They have accepted our dreams and put their faith in us. I’m happy and will work towards helping Chhindwara develop and grow.”

Sahu attributed his success to the policies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “The biggest factor was Modi. The policies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi have been accepted by the people. In the last 10 years, there was a BJP government in the Centre and a Congress MP in Chhindwara. Voters were fed up with the MP and wanted to be part of the BJP government’s development agenda,” he explained.

Analyzing Nakul Nath’s Defeat

“Nakul did not play his part as an MP as he should have,” Sahu criticized. “He would come to Chhindwara holding his father’s hand, picnic here, and leave. His whole campaign was centered on Kamal Nath — Nakul was fighting the election on his father’s name alone. The father fought the election on his merit because he knew his son couldn’t. The people of Chhindwara knew this too.”

Kamal Nath’s Political Future

Sahu was blunt about Kamal Nath’s future in politics. “I think Kamal Nath should now retire from politics. He couldn’t shore up a victory for his son. The people of Chhindwara rejected them within five months of Kamal Nath winning the Chhindwara assembly seat. He should resign as MLA and leave.”

Unifying the BJP in Chhindwara

Addressing concerns about internal divisions within the BJP in Chhindwara, Sahu emphasized unity. “We’re united. It’s the Congress that should reflect on why it’s broken. Not a single BJP leader has left for the Congress here. We take everyone with us and believe in the slogan ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas’. Meanwhile, the Congress is still focused on its own families. Kamal Nath didn’t let go of a single opportunity to promote his family. No local leader is given a chance to grow in the party.”

“Kamal Nath is credited with promoting development in Chhindwara. How will you take this forward as an MP?” Sahu responded, “We’ll be holding consultations with various stakeholders to chart a development course soon. We’ll take Chhindwara forward.”

NOTA And Independent Candidates In Indian Election Dynamics

The diverse political landscape of the world’s largest democracy has evolved with every election. One such breakthrough was NOTA or ‘None of the Above’, a ballot option allowing voters to have an option even if they don’t like all of the contesting candidates. NOTA has been a part of many elections across the globe. India is the 14th nation in the world to introduce NOTA in elections. Also termed as the scratch vote, NOTA is known by various other names such as ‘White Vote’ in Greece, Spain, and Columbia. In Argentina, it is termed a ‘Blank Vote’. The Election Commission of India (ECI) recommended having a NOTA option in 2009, but the recommendation was opposed by the central government. Amid that, an NGO named 'The People’s Union For Civil Liberties’ filed a public-interest litigation (PIL) statement to support the same. Finally, it was on 27 September 2013, when a Supreme Court judgment validated NOTA as an option in Indian elections. It is worth noting that the votes of NOTA are considered ‘invalid votes’. However, this way of showcasing disapproval by voters was removed by the Supreme Court of India from the Rajya Sabha elections in 2018.

Independent candidates in Indian elections

Before proceeding to the benefits independent candidates can have from NOTA, it is important to analyze their condition in previous elections. The winning scenario of independent Lok Sabha candidates is declining. Data from the Election Commission of India states that around 99% of the independent candidates lost their deposits. In 2019, more than 8,000 independent candidates had fought polls, and only 4 of them won. Independent candidates face many challenges including limited resources, lack of organizational support, biased media coverage, lack of voters' trust, and other regulatory hurdles.

How can NOTA benefit them?

'None of the Above' (NOTA) is a ballot option that allows voters to indicate that they are unhappy with any or all of the candidates running for election. Although NOTA does not directly help independent candidates, it may have an indirect positive impact on politics that may be advantageous to them.

First and foremost, NOTA is a means by which voters can voice their dissatisfaction with conventional political parties and their nominees. Political parties receive a clear warning that their candidates might not be connecting with the people when a sizable portion of voters select NOTA. Independent candidates may be able to capitalize on this dissatisfaction by positioning themselves as strong alternatives, especially if they can specifically address the issues that voters choose to support NOTA.

Secondly, NOTA might contribute to the political landscape's fragmentation and the erosion of traditional party affiliations. Jayant Sinha Responds To BJP's "Didn't Vote, Attend Rallies" Notice

Former Union Minister and MP Jayant Sinha on Wednesday said that he was "surprised" to receive the BJP's show cause notice asking him why he didn't vote in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections and did not take part in election campaigning.

In response to BJP's Jharkhand general secretary Aditya Sahu's letter, Mr Sinha said that he voted through the postal ballot process as he was overseas for "personal commitments".

"I was very surprised to receive your letter and discover that you have released it to the media as well," Mr Sinha, who is the sitting MP from the Hazaribagh seat in Jharkhand, said in a two-page letter to Mr Sahu.

Responding to Mr Sahu's charge that he has not been taking part in "organisational work and election campaigning" ever since Manish Jaiswal was declared a candidate from the Hazaribagh Lok Sabha seat, Mr Sinha said that he was not invited for "any party events, rallies or organizational meetings".

"The party announced Shri Manish Jaiswal ji as its candidate for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. My endorsement was evident when I congratulated Shri Jaiswal ji on March 8, 2024, an event that was well-documented on social media and demonstrated my unwavering support for the party's choice," he said.

"If the part wanted me to participate in any election activities, you could surely have contacted me. However, not a single senior party official or MP/MLA from Jharkhand reached out to me. I was not invited to any party events, rallies, or organizational meetings," he said.

Jayant Sinha, who in March had announced that he wouldn't contest the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, also said that he had requested BJP national president JP Nadda to relieve him from his "direct electoral duties".

"I withdrew from the Lok Sabha elections on March 2. After consulting with Shri Nadda ji and getting his explicit approval, I made it clear publicly that I was not going to be involved in these elections. I am happy to support the party on economic and governance policies and have continued to do so," the two-term MP told Mr Sahu.

Mr Sinha also said that on April 30, he received a call from Mr Jaiswal inviting him to his nomination rally on May 1, but he couldn't attend "due to the late notice"

"I traveled to Hazaribagh on May 2 and went directly to Shri Jaiswal ji's residence to express my regards. He was not present, so I conveyed my message to his family," he said.

Mr Sinha, who has been associated with the BJP for over 25 years, also stated that his "development and organizational work in Hazaribagh have been appreciated widely", that also reflected in his "record" victories in the 2014 and 2019 general elections.

"Given my contributions to the party and the circumstances detailed above, the public issuance of your letter is unseemly. Your approach demoralizes dedicated party workers and undermines the party's collective efforts. Additionally, despite my loyalty and hard work for the party, it appears that I am being unjustly targeted," he told Mr Sahu.

"We could have certainly spoken in person or on the phone at any time to address any of your misgivings. As the party official responsible for the Hazaribagh Lok Sabha elections, you could have reached me at any time. To send me a letter after the elections are over is incomprehensible," he said.
