Guest of Honor Announcement: Luciano Muriel

Barricades 2024 is pleased to announce Luciano Muriel as one of our Guests of Honour for this year's convention!

Muriel is a playwright, novelist and secondary school teacher. He's been awarded with the National Theater Prize "Castelló a Escena" for Vals para el pez piedra, the International Award of Youth Theater of the Editorial DALYA for Stop Amargura, the first prize in the XXVII National Contest «Calamonte Joven» for Angélica, with the Prize “Sapere Aude” of the Ávila Arts and the Youth Humanities Award of Castilla y León for Grantaire, a text that was also selected by the Aid for Youth Creation 2017 program of the National Institute of Youth (INJUVE) for its production.

Muriel's panel will detail the creative process behind the show Grantaire, from the discovery of the character during the first reading of Victor Hugo's Les Miserables to the opening night og the staging at the Teatro Pradillo of Madrid. It will cover questions including: Why Grantaire? Why a dramatic monologue? Why include Amaral songs? What did the awards and subventions entail? Muriel promises all the answers to these and many other questions!

Montaje inclusivo que visibiliza la lucha de minorías y disidencias, para transmitir el mensaje que la aceptación no viene desde lo sexual, sino que desde la base humana, desde el respeto. Valor tan dañado en una sociedad neoliberal y desigual como es la chilena, donde el desequilibrio ha llevado a los opresores a ostentar la impunidad liberados de pagar sus delitos, amparados en el determinismo, situando la movilidad social como una utopía.

Por medio de coreografías con cuerpos livianos y movimientos sutiles, interpretan un coro que maneja muy bien silencios y tiempos dando ritmo a la obra. Se aprecia técnica y habilidad actoral, destacando las actuaciones de las parecidas hermanas, Clara y Solange, que juegan a cambiar de roles, con la falsa esperanza de dejar quiénes son, seres de segunda clase o categoría, las criadas.

Concierto de Amistad, super éxito de El Gran Combo plasmado en el álbum Mejor Que Nunca (1975) se escribió en realidad un año antes expresamente para un evento histórico que tuvo lugar en Nueva York. Ok it's time for me to share with y'all my Arcana voice headcanons

Mainly because I've been thinking about this for a while and I need to let it out ok

ASRA: sounds like Aladdin from the Disney animated movie, but a bit more breathy and airy. I have this headcannon that he had an Arabic accent as a child but gradually lost it after growing up in vesuvia without his parents.

Julian: there isn't much I'm sure about in this world, but i AM sure that Julain has a british accent PERIODT. In my head Julian kinda sounds like Hugh Laurie in his natural speaking voice and accent. I think Hugh's vocal quirks and inflections are very julian.

MURIEL: Listen i don't think his voice is like ALL THAT gravelly and raspy at all. He sounds like Dave Bautista or Jason Momoa but with a very low and almost whispered voice. I think muriel is afraid of raising his voice/being too loud so subsequently his voice sounds very soft.

NADIA: Ok I don't have a specific voice in mind for Nadia but for sure she has what sounds like a hybrid between a Greek and a Hindi accent. Also definitely a low pitched but very feminine and musical voice.

PORTIA: ok HEAR ME OUT, but I think portia and julian have different accents despite being siblings which is probably due to them growing up in different areas. Portia has a high pitched voice and in my head she has a Brooklyn accent FIGHT ME

LUCIO: It's pretty much confirmed that lucio has a new jersey accent and BOY does it suit his character. Lucio in my mind sounds like Lucky Luciano from Boardwalk Empire, but more bitchy and high pitched.

VALDEMAR: in my head Valdemar sounds exactly like Doctor Poison from Wonder Woman

VULGORA: Has an angry sounding scottish accent, like Merida's dad from Brave

VLASTOMIL: Sounds like lord voldemort.

VALERIUS: I always read his lines with the POSHEST most BITCHY British accent ever. His voice does have a pleasant depth to it though, like a glass of fine wine

I’m gonna count that Spanish production of Grantaire as another example for my fandom thesis of the current fandom projecting a lot of themselves onto Grantaire whereas in other times it happened more with other characters, depending on the trait/s that characterize each generation or that each generation focuses on. I mean Luciano Muriel aka writer/director said “Ojalá no, pero quizá casi doscientos años después nos toque darle a él la razón” (”Hopefully not, but maybe almost 200 years later, it’s our turn to accept he was right”) and if that’s not a genuine representation of an exhausted millennial I don’t know what is.

From the outside looking in, the timing of Argentinian striker Mauro Icardi being stripped of the Inter captaincy seemed to come out of nowhere. The Italian giants announced through social media and then a club statement on February 13 that the 26-year-old was to be replaced as captain by veteran goalkeeper Samir Handanovic and he has not featured for the team since the decision was made. Officially Icardi is unavailable because of a knee injury but it is probable that his relationship with the club is at an all-time low and discussions for a contract renewal have collapsed. Since winning 1-0 away against Rapid Vienna in the first leg of their Round of 32 clash in the Europa League, Inter have remained unbeaten in their last four competitive fixtures and the team is performing better as a collective. Coach Luciano Spalletti has often blamed the mentality of the squad for squandering leads or being incapable of overturning deficits during his tenure in charge of the Biscione but the mentality looks to have changed for the better without Icardi. It may seem coincidental for now but the results and performances speak for themselves. Following their victory away to Rapid Vienna in Austria, they defeated Sampdoria 2-1 in their Round 24 Serie A fixture in arguably the match of the week. Both teams played with an attacking intent but the Nerazzurri made the most of home advantage and possessing more individual quality on the pitch. On Thursday evening, Inter faced the Austrian side again for the second leg of their Europa League tie and swept them aside 4-0 in Milan and 5-0 on aggregate. Ivan Perisic was the standout performer with his attacking display on the left-wing capped off with a fine solo goal. Perhaps the most astonishing part of the win against Rapid was that former captain and much-maligned defender Andrea Ranocchia scored with a well-struck half-volley to put the Nerazzurri 2-0 up at home. The winning streak stopped on Sunday evening with Inter drawing 3-3 away to Fiorentina in Serie A in what was an exciting yet controversial match. Despite going 1-0 down in the first minute, the Biscione came back and eventually lead 3-1 seven minutes into the second half. Gigliati left-back Cristiano Biraghi had a goal disallowed after Luis Muriel had been adjudged by VAR and referee Rosario Abisso to have deliberately kicked Inter defender Danilo D’Ambrosio but Muriel pulled a goal back from a free-kick minutes later. If the decision to disallow Biraghi’s goal was harsh on Fiorentina, Abisso’s decision to award a penalty against D’Ambrosio for an apparent handball despite consulting VAR was more so. Jordan Veretout converted the penalty for the Viola deep into stoppage time but it was a match in which both sides showed that they were capable of winning. Due to the absence of Icardi, more Biscione players have been involved in the goals such as Perisic, Matias Vecino, and Matteo Politano while D’Ambrosio has provided some goals and assists. Belgian midfielder Radja Nainggolan has improved in recent weeks as well and his experience and energy will be vital during this period. The verdict is still out on Argentine starlet Lautaro Martinez, who has taken the place of Icardi and scored the winner in the 1-0 victory against Parma, the last game his compatriot featured in. Since then, the 21-year-old has only scored once and he has looked raw but he now has the regular playing to help him mature and prove himself. Inter do not have an overly demanding fixture list in March but a Round of 16 tie against German club Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League and the Derby della Madonnina against AC Milan should truly test the quality and resilience of this squad without Icardi.
