Panasonic's LUMIX S5II and S5IIX are Scheduled to get Major Software Updates
Tumblr media
One of the best things about modern cameras is that they're now a bit "smarter" compared to their predecessors. Yes, they still lack a lot of the functionality found on smartphones, although better-designed software as well as wireless capabilities mean that improvements and updates can be downloaded onto your camera in a more timely and efficient manner. With that in mind, Panasonic recently announced that it will be rolling out a firmware update to two of its Lumix models, namely the LUMIX S5II and S5IIX. More specifically, the updates will come with firmware V3.0 for the S5II, and V2.0 for the S5IIX. Panasonic says that the new upgrades will focus on improved efficiency and performance for photo and video, in addition to creative control for users. The updates are scheduled to arrive on 22nd of April, and addresses creator feedback by streamlining production and post-production workflows. But what exactly can users expect with the update? File Transfer and Video Proxy For one, users can now easily upload their media files online. The update brings native camera-to-cloud connectivity, so JPEG and RAW files, as well as proxy videos can be directly uploaded to Adobe's Frame.io platform, either via Wi-Fi or USB tethering. This allows for real-time remote feedback during shoots and collaborative editing using whatever software a user might prefer. The update also brings over support for proxy video recording, which allows the camera to record a low-bitrate proxy file, and is saved alongside high-resolution video. With this feature, users can transfer files much faster in addition to more instantaneous editing and other post-production tasks, all without compromising the original footage. Autofocus and Stabilization Panasonic also says that the firmware upgrades will bring real-time autofocus enhancements, thanks to the Phase Hybrid Autofocus system. The update will allow for improved subject recognition, which will include people, animal eyes, as well as vehicles including cars and motorcycles - this makes capturing movement a lot more easy. For stabilization, the updates will come with improvements for the electronic image stabilization built into the cameras. Users will be able to tap into a new high stabilization mode, which is aimed at drastically reducing camera shake when recording videos handheld. There's also perspective distortion correction, which handles warping that usually occurs as a side-effect of using wide-angle lenses. Pre-Burst Shooting With SH Pre-Burst Shooting, users can capture split-second moments thanks to retroactive burst shooting. This can be done by half-pressing the shutter button, allowing the camera to pre-record frames and giving users more opportunities to take shots even before actually "taking" them. Panasonic hopes that the upcoming firmware update will provide creators with a more efficient workflow, as well as access to improved performance, and expanded creative possibilities all on their camera. The updates are of course free, and should begin to arrive for more users and regions starting on April 22nd. Read the full article
