4 BENEFITS OF MOTORIZED WINDOW TREATMENTS
Tumblr media
Start with your windows to improve your house and lifestyle! Get smart window treatments such as motorized shades and blinds. Changing your window coverings may drastically alter the mood of your rooms. You improve your lifestyle and your house's appearance by replacing dusty blinds and ugly shades with motorized window treatments. Do you want to learn more about the advantages of installing smart blinds and shades? Continue reading for four compelling reasons to upgrade.
STYLIZE YOUR HOME'S ROOMS
Cool Screens window coverings emphasize both elegance and functionality. They provide an astonishing improvement to your room's décor and are available in hundreds of styles with a choice of material, fabric, and colour options. These are high-quality window coverings, not the kind you'd find at a big-box retailer. That means you'll never have to settle with imitation wood blinds that offer the impression of grandeur but fall short. Premium smart shades and blinds drastically improve any interior design, regardless of style.
SHADE CONTROL IS SEAMLESS
Why touch your sunglasses if you don't have to? You'll never have to deal with cables or rods again with smart shades. Simply hit a button on your smart home touchpad or remote, and they will respond automatically, rising and lowering in your direction. Instead of wandering around your house closing or raising them when the sun sets, one icon tap accomplishes it all. Simply set your blinds to run on a timer and you'll have perfect and automatic natural light management.
TREATMENTS FOR ENERGY-SAVING WINDOW
Traditional blinds and shades give some energy savings, but motorized shades go a step further. You'll notice significant savings on your electricity cost, especially throughout the summer. Lutron blinds, for example, are not only designed to block out heat, but they also automatically vary the amount of tilt based on the location of the sun to provide optimal comfort throughout the day. Your window coverings can also be linked to your air conditioner so that they adapt when the AC is left on for an extended period of time.
ADDED SECURITY AND PRIVACY
Smart window coverings are a wonderful addition to your home security system, providing additional privacy and protection for your house and family. Because they run independently, they give your home the illusion of being occupied while you are gone. They'll make attackers think twice about breaking into your home by automatically closing at night and opening throughout the day. Furthermore, you may manage your blinds and shades from afar using a smartphone app.

Smart Home Entertainment
Smart home automation systems are great for monitoring your energy usage, or basic security or even turning off your lights and heating/air conditioning when you're gone. Part of the draw in home automation however should be integrating your normal home systems together on easy to use control screens, or apps for your smart phone and tablet. Being able to control your home entertainment systems, your outdoor speakers, the lights in the living room or dining room, the intercom or anything else for that matter, from a touch screen controller, or an app, just has the feel of the 21st century. We may not have flying cars but we can stream movies to multiple devices!
This gets a little more complicated as ultimately you want one control system that monitors everything from your home security to your home entertainment system and appliances. There are several companies that make smart home Houston controllers and home automation integrated systems that should be able to be installed with a little more advanced know how. Crestron makes some great controllers that can network with your lighting control systems and home entertainment with pretty minimal effort. The only downside is that you are pretty well stuck with Crestron products for all of your home automation in order to integrate all your systems as easily as you would want. The upside however is they have apps for your smart-phones and tablets as well as home wall units and remotes.
Insteon makes a package lighting/home entertainment unit that will take over your private home theater installation Houston quite nicely. It replaces several light switches and outlets for lamps as well as providing an integrated IR (infrared) controller that can be programmed as a universal remote for all your home theater systems. It's a cheaper, easier way to get started on integrating home entertainment without the higher investment costs of the flashy displays and full systems Crestron offers.
Lutron probably offers the most comprehensive home automation systems. They have very specific products that will allow you to integrate lighting, home theater, home energy efficiency, window drapes, occupancy sensors and home security camera installation Houston. Their systems allow you to integrate with third party devices, as well as purchase Lutron developed components and items for your house, your car, and every room in the house. Occupancy sensors, outside lighting, home entertainment and temperature control/energy monitoring gives you everything you need to create the most advanced home you can dream of. Their systems all work together allowing you to utilize an app for tablet or smartphone or connect to their repeaters over IP (Standard Internet Protocols).
As you can see Home automation and the future of Smart Home Technology is not just a fad, or a passing fancy. These systems are available and offer easy integration into your home if you are willing to spend the time and money necessary to develop it. Whole home package solutions are possible as well provided you don't mind the cost or preparation involved. If you are in the process of building your own home of course this is much easier to deal with, just make sure your general or electrical contractor pulls the wires to where you want them to go in the house and ensure that your light switches and wall panel are from a system that you want to integrate in the future.

Living Room
Surround Sound System
In the living room we have installed a Sony 4K 65” TV supported by a 3.1 surround sound system with a center speaker bar from Triad and a left and right stealth speakers from Amina Technologies. Discreetly located inside the home’s front wall is an embedded subwoofer from SpeakerCraft.   The surround sound amplification and source control is provided by a Sony receiver located in a hidden AV rack below the stairwell.   The Sony receiver sources between Apple TV, Roku, and BluRay content.   The system is completely controlled by the new, sleek Control4 Halo universal remote controller shown below.
Tumblr media
We also use The Dakboard digital signage platform to create the customized digital welcome screen that you see below for our AirBnB guests.
Tumblr media
When viewing the living room TV from the kitchen bar or kitchen it can electronically rotate on a Future Automation motorized arm by 45 and 90 degrees to achieve the optimal viewing angle from these 2 angles.   In addition, once the TV is rotated from the wall it provides easy access to a recessed in-wall box that houses the Apple TV, Roku and Smart SnapOne power strip.
Whole House Controller and Music Amplifier
Tumblr media
Mounted inside the Mid Atlantic AV rack below the stairwell sits the Control4 central processor that manages all of the home’s connected, intelligent systems.   At the bottom of this rack is the Control4 8 Zone Control4 Music Amplifier.  This amplifier provides independent music listening zones for the living room, kitchen, master bedroom, master bathroom, and backyard locations.   The Mid Atlantic Rack is mounted on drawer railings that allow it to be easily extended from below the stairwell for maintenance and upgrades.
Control4 Inwall Touchscreen and Keypads
Tumblr media
As you walk inside the front door you will notice a Control4 10” touchscreen controller mounted on the stairwell wall.   From this controller you can control the whole house music, temperature, skylights, ceiling fan, TV, motorized shades, lighting, cameras, and much more.   The touch screen provides for complete control of the home’s entertainment, comfort, and security systems.   Below the touchscreen controller is a 6 button Control4 keypad that provides many of the same controls as the touchscreen in a push button keypad form factor.
Intelligent Ceiling Fan
Tumblr media
Mounted on the high cedar lined ceiling is the Haiku intelligent fan.   The speed of this fan can be controlled by touchscreen, keypad, or voice.   It can also be programmed to turn on whenever the room temperature climbs above a threshold temperature to delay turning on the more electricity demanding air conditioner.
Intelligent Skylights
The 4 Velux solar motorized skylights in the ceiling provide fresh, cool air into the home.  These skylights also have embedded shades for privacy and lighting control.  The skylights and shades can also can operated by touchscreen, keypad, or voice control.
Motorized Window Shade
The Lutron motorized window shade on the living room and kitchen windows can be opened by voice control, the Josh AI puck on the wall, the nearby inwall touchscreen or the Control4 NEEO remote controller for the living room TV.   When an AirB&B guest walks into the showroom and says “OK, Josh I’m home” the shades are programmed to open, the lights turn on, the music softly turns on and the heating or AC turn automatically turn on to welcome the new guest.
Voice Control
On the wall next to the guest bathroom is the Josh puck microphone.   This intelligent voice assistant provides for voice control of almost all of the home’s electronic systems, including the TV, motorized shades, lighting, music, skylights, fan, and heating system.   In addition, it can serve as a rotating, physical control to precisely adjust the music volume, shade height, or light dimming level in the room.
Intelligent Thermostat Control
The Ecobee intelligent thermostat on the wall outside the guest bathroom provides full control of the heating, air conditioning, and fan inside the home.   With the remote smart sensors it can automatically adjust the heating and air conditioning output to balance the temperature between the first and second floors of the home.   It can also be controlled by the Control4 touchscreens or by voice.

Review: Brilliant home automation system with HomeKit lives up to its name – AppleInsider
Tumblr media
After a lengthy delay, Brilliant has finally come through with HomeKit support for its smart home controller. While it isn’t cheap, it more than justifies its existence with features and user convenience.
What is it?
There’s really not much else like Brilliant on the market. It isn’t just a smart wall switch like iDevice, Eve, Lutron, or many others. It isn’t necessarily just a whole-home controller either.
youtube
Brilliant is a smart switch, a digital photo frame, a controller for Hue and LIFX lights, a place to control your Sonos system, a way to lock or unlock your door, and a way to communicate with your family throughout your home. And, to top it all off, it’s now a HomeKit device.
Since it launched, Brilliant has continued to integrate with more and more brands, with piles of integrations already in place. At the same time, Brilliant is gearing up for a couple of major new additions to its lineup of integrated partners.
The device is fairly simple. It comes in four configurations and each size features a five-inch display. A single switch only has the touchscreen display while two, three, and four gang switches have long vertical divots that intuitively look like sliders. These are touch-sensitive and used to control the lights.
Tumblr media
The bottom menu bar of the Brilliant conrtoller
We were very impressed with the screen on the Brilliant controllers. At 720 pixels by 1280 pixels, it has a pixel density of about 293, just shy of the iPhone’s 326. It makes your photos look incredible and the controls all very sharp, and feels much more like using a smartphone than a wall switch.
Setup and installation
Like any device that requires wiring, some level of skill is necessary for a self-installation. But, it isn’t hard, and Brilliant has gone out of its way to create a simple and easy-to-follow guide for the process.
That said, if you don’t feel confident removing and installing a wall switch, let a professional or confident and knowledgeable friend lend a hand. Installation boils down to killing your power, removing the old wall switch, following the directions to connect the wires to the new switch, screwing it into place, and turning the power back on. It took us only a few minutes to manage and didn’t have any issues.
Tumblr media
Parts included in the box of the Brilliant controller
Brilliant includes everything in the box including the wires, which are pre-stripped to the perfect length and dipped in solder to prevent fraying, and a smattering of wire nuts. You likely have your own behind your outlet, but extras are always preferred and if you need larger ones, Brilliant has you covered.
Tumblr media
Wire holes in the sides of the Brilliant controller
A few things to note. These do require you to use a neutral wire, so if you have an older home without those, you’re out of luck without a lot of extra work and money. These also do work three-way or four-way switches, which is one of the spots we installed ours.
After completing the wiring and flipping the power back on, the panel will illuminate and boot up. A “begin” button will show and the Brilliant panel will walk you through connecting to Wi-Fi, pairing with your Brilliant account, and setting up the lights you want to control.
Tumblr media
Test button behind the Brilliant panel
With the lights, the system will ask you what kind of bulbs you have connected — LED, CFL, incandescent, and the ilk. Depending on which you have, Brilliant will ask you if you want the lights to dim. It then lets you test dimming them to see if there are any issues, such as flickering. If not, they are good to go.
Some devices you have connected to a wall switch may not be normal lights. It may control a wall outlet, a fan, or connected to a smart bulb that needs to perpetually stay on. This is all taken into consideration during setup. Brilliant seems to have thought of everything.
Controlling your lights
On the most basic level, Brilliant is in charge of controlling whatever is connected to the switches. There are a few ways to manage this.
Tumblr media
Brilliant controller with light sliders
With two-gang, three-gang, or four-gang boxes there are physical grooves that can be used to control the lights. Tap on anywhere on the groove and the light will turn on or off. Sliding on any of the grooves will (if possible) dim or brighten the lights.
Whether you have the grooves or don’t (as the single-gang box doesn’t), you can quickly control the lights by swiping down on the touch screen with two fingers and a quick swipe up will turn on all the lights. It is a simple gesture you can do as you walk by the switch.
Finally, you can tap on the “lights” shortcut right on the Brilliant home screen. It opens up controls for all the lights and allows them to be turned on or off as well as dimmed. When you use the sliders, this on-screen guide also shows up.
We mentioned above that during setup, you can tell Brilliant that the switch it is replacing controls a smart bulb — like Hue or LIFX. This alone is huge. With these bulbs, they must always be connected to power. What happens all too frequently, is someone replaces their bulbs with smart bulbs and someone turns the wall switch off. Now those bulbs cant be controlled until the switch is thrown again. It is a mess.
Tumblr media
Light controls on the Brilliant controller
With Brilliant, it will know those are smart bulbs, leave them connected to power at all times, but allow you to map the switch control to control the bulbs via the Works with Brilliant integration. If you have Hue or LIFX bulbs and you’ve accidentally turned the switches off or taped them in position before, you know how big a deal this is.
Third-party controls
Support for third-party smart home devices is quite verbose, but also slightly limited. Many of the big players are present. For thermostats, there is support for ecobee as well as Honeywell Home. For security, there is August, Kwikset, Schlage, Ring, Yale, Assa Abloy, and ButterflyMX. Lights include Hue, Kasa by tp-link, LIFX, Wemo, Leviton, and Lutron. For music we have Sonos.
It has Amazon Alexa built-in, though it also works with Google Assistant, SmartThings, and of course Apple’s HomeKit.
Tumblr media
HomeKit settings in Brilliant
We tied our new August Wi-Fi Smart Lock, our ecobee thermostat, our LIFX and Hue bulbs, and our Sonos system to our Brilliant system all for easy contorl. We recently ditched our Ring to security issues with the platform which meant we didn’t have a doorbell cam to connect which is too bad because that is one of the best integrations for the Brilliant system. Especially if you get a lot of packages, have frequent guests, or have a lot of food delivered.
Our issue with third-party integrations is that when certain devices don’t work with Brilliant, it makes it glaringly obvious and mildly frustrating. The couple big ones for our own home include our Lutron Serena shades and our Arlo cameras.
Tumblr media
Sonos integration for Brilliant
This fault is shared between Brilliant and these other companies for not integrating together but it is the consumer who pays the price. If Brilliant is intended to be the central hub in your home for guests, children, or anyone who can’t — or won’t — use a smart device, what good is it when seemingly random devices aren’t there or included in scenes? Your grandmother doesn’t care that Nanoleaf makes the smart bulbs in your kitchen, she just cares that she can’t control them.
That goes as well for the HomeKit devices, but more on that in a second.
What we did have set up, worked great. It would amazing to be able to tap into these devices right from the wall and not having to always use our phone. I don’t carry my phone with me every second of the day I’m home and while my Apple Watch can alert me to notifications, it can’t always control everything — at least not easily.
Tumblr media
Adding our Hue lights to Brilliant
For instance, my wife can lock the front door from the bedroom when she comes in at night because there is a lock button and status right on our Brilliant home page. She claims that Siri “doesn’t listen to her” so this is easier than opening the phone and going through the Home app.
We can easily adjust our thermostat from the living room even though the thermostat is quite far away. I can quickly adjust the Sonos volume in my bedroom from the living room. I can easily toggle scenes that include my lights, thermostat, and door from Brilliant. If I’m in the studio, my wife can quickly use the intercom to speak to me.
The options here are endless and only become more powerful the more devices you connect to Brilliant. Whether that is through more Brilliant devices or through accessories that specifically work via Brilliant. Once you’ve invested in Brilliant, we can see it dictating other purchases — such as choosing Ring over August or Arlo despite the security issues because it does work with Brilliant.
HomeKit support
HomeKit support is finally here. Yes, after more than a year since being announced as imminent, HomeKit support has finally been delivered, We don’t need to go into what caused so much delay and are just happy that it has arrived at all.
Tumblr media
Adding multiple switches to HomeKit
At the moment, HomeKit support is in beta, and rolling out to roughly 10% of the Brilliant beta users at a time before the entire public beta pool is up and running with HomeKit. The plan is to remove the “beta” tag by June.
We’ve been testing the beta for a while now and can say that the implementation, even in beta form, has been perfect. We’ve had no issues with HomeKit thus far.
If running the beta software during setup, the setup wizard will ask you if you want to use HomeKit and present you with the pairing code. However, if you are already running the Brilliant system and receive HomeKit from the software update, you have to manually enable it.
To enable HomeKit, open the settings menu on your Brilliant panel, go to the “Works with Brilliant” section, and choose “Apple HomeKit.”
From there, it is a familiar process. Scan the unique on-screen HomeKit pairing code, name the control, place it in a room, and label the switches accordingly.
Tumblr media
Different switch types from Brilliant in the Home app
At launch, there are limitations to what HomeKit can do. Right now, just the one to four switches controlled via the Brilliant panel will show in HomeKit. Neither the embedded video camera nor the motion sensor are exposed to HomeKit. The motion sensor in particular is glaringly absent and something that would be immensely useful when other HomeKit devices are in the room.
What’s more, imagine if Brilliant were able to act as a whole-home controller for HomeKit devices. You can control any HomeKit device right from the wall panel. HomeKit video doorbell, thermostat, lights, et cetera could all show up on the wall panel for each control and access to programmed HomeKit scenes.
This is something that HomeKit is absolutely missing and it is being surpassed by competing smart home systems. The Echo Show and the Google Home Max can do that for Alexa or Assistant ecosystems and HomeKit owners are left to their iPads as the only thing close. Brilliant is well-positioned should Apple ever choose to open up HomeKit in this regard.
Tumblr media
HomeKti dimmer with Brilliant control panel
With HomeKit, there is still plenty you can do. With your switches automated, you can turn any built-in lights or fixtures into HomeKit lights. We have a Brilliant controller installed in our hallway, rather near our ecobee. We use the motion sensors in the ecobee to tell our hallway lights to turn on when motion is detected.
Similar with our living room which is near our front door. We tell our entryway lights to turn on when our Hue outdoor motion sensor detects someone coming up our driveway or sidewalk.
You can ask Siri to turn lights on or off, you can control your fan through Siri, lights can be dimmed on Apple Watch, and it overall just integrates with your larger HomeKit system.
Brilliant touches
There are a lot of small touches that we really appreciate in the Brilliant system. We won’t touch on every aspect, but at least our favorites.
Brilliant has many different wall plates available in several different finishes so that even though it is a tech product, it will easily fit into your home. A lot of smart switches are just all white and this makes it feel much more natural.
Tumblr media
Active camera notifications on Brilliant
The intercom system is a great idea. There is a small camera, mic, and speaker on each of these and it is a great way to communicate through your home. Brilliant understands that a camera can be something not everyone wants, which is why it is very apparent when the camera is in use thanks to lights and other denigrators but it can also be completely blocked thanks to a physical lens cover that can be slid into place.
Tumblr media
Live from the Brilliant app
You can access those cameras from the panel or from the Brilliant app. Additionally, you can passcode protect the cameras and restrict access to certain users.
There are motion sensors built into the Brilliant controller which allows you to have your lights turn on whenever you walk into the room. This is convenient as well as power-efficient as you don’t have lights on in rooms that are unoccupied.
Brilliant runs over Wi-Fi and doesn’t need your phone to be nearby to control them. But if Wi-Fi should ever go down, the Brilliant wall panels will communicate with one another over Bluetooth. So if you have a living room controller but want to control your hallway lights, the living room Brilliant panel will send the Bluetooth signal to the hallway controller to have the lights shut off.
Aside from using just more of the full Brilliant controllers, the company also offers smart plugs and dimmer switches too. These are perfect for lower-traffic locations or rooms where you just want to enable smart controls. They integrate into your system and you can control them on their own, through the Brilliant app, or from other Brilliant controllers in the home.
Tumblr media
Adding a custom image to Brilliant
The last little touch is the ability to use the controller as a digital photo frame. Brilliant initially launched this feature as an afterthought but was blown away by how popular it became. After having it in our homes for a while, we see why. We loaded it up with some of our most epic photography and it is too cool seeing them put on display and rotated through.
There was a lot of effort going into this as well. It isn’t just choosing several images and calling it a day, it is selecting your images then choosing exactly the crop that is most flattering. Brilliant also has several fantastic images to pick from as well from the stock library of animals, nature, still art, and others. You can get really creative with this feature and is a great way to decorate your home.
Is it worth the investment?
There is no arguing that the Brilliant panels aren’t expensive. I’d say they categorically are. Your average smart home owner who is looking for the cheapest Amazon Alexa smart plug will likely balk at the price tag affixed to the Brilliant panels. But in our mind, there is no better value smart home gadget.
Tumblr media
Brilliant smart home control panel
This is not just a replacement wall switch that adds smart functionality, it is an entire smart home system that gets more powerful the more it expands.
With Brilliant, you can control your temperature from any wall panel. When your doorbell rings, you can see the live feed from your Ring show up on the gorgeous display. Control your Sonos music playback from the wall, including volume. You can tap to lock or unlock your August smart lock.
Not to mention bringing physical controls to your Hue, WeMo, or LIFX lights. For fans of Alexa, they can also query Amazon’s digital assistant right from the Brilliant panel.
Thanks to the camera, speaker, and mic, you have a full home audio or video intercom system as well as a security camera to check in on your housekeeper, kids, or pets.
The number of features found in Brilliant is truly incredible and there is little like it on the market. With HomeKit support, this easily jumps to the top of our best smart home accessories list.
There aren’t necessarily drawbacks to Brilliant as there are ways that it could improve, notably with HomeKit. As we mentioned, we’d love to see HomeKit support expand to allow the Brilliant wall panel to be able to control other HomeKit accessories. Could be as simple as tying the physical switches to HomeKit scenes or as verbose as showing all HomeKit accessories right on the Home screen. There is a lot of potential here, it is just waiting for Apple to unlock it.
Supports Apple HomeKit
Whole-home broadcast or intercom
Cotnrol most major smart home brands of devices with more on the way
Easy to use and adds physical controls for all your smart home devices
Screen is bright and high resolution
Great way to display photos
Physical controls for Sonos, Hue, and LIFX are particularly noteworthy
Multiple faceplate options blend into your home
Can work locally over Bluetooth as well as Wi-Fi
Makes your existing lights smart and adds a dimmer when available
Has a huge amount of potential for growth
HomeKit support is limited by Apple
Some major brands are absent, such as Lutron
High price tag makes it an expensive endeavor for big homes
Rating: 4.5 out of 5
Where to buy
Brilliant’s Smart Home Control panel retails for $299 and can be ordered from Crutchfield. They go up to $499 for up to a four-gang switch.

Smart Light Bulb VS Smart Socket VS Smart Switch
Ever thought about home lighting automation? There are many ways to do this – let’s talk about how to choose the one that works best for you.
Smart home lighting is attractive enough: when you get home from work, the lights are automatically turned on for you, which is very convenient; when you go on holiday, the lights can be turned on and off in safe mode to simulate the situation of someone living. Automation a lamp not too difficult, as long as the replacement Lifx White 800 built-in Wi-Fi and other smart bulb, or lamp switch intelligent access Belkin WeMo the connector. But what if you want to automate the lights of the entire home?
This is the challenge now facing the KASYN Smart Home Life Lab, where we (KASYN) will test, explore and build future connected homes. This is a 5,800-square-foot house with a variety of lighting fixtures and switches that form a networked lighting system that delivers service in the best and most intelligent way, which can be a daunting task.
The good news is that we have a lot of choices: color-changing Philips Hue LED bulbs, automatic switches and sockets such as Lutron and Insteon. The bad news is that choosing diversity means we need to pick it out so we can make the best plan.
But this is the whole concept of KASYN smart home. This is a real place, and if you start using smart home technology, we will delve into these challenges in the same way. In any case, we will record the whole process and hope to help you with your smart home upgrade and purchase decision.
To do this, let us look at the choices of smart lighting and find out their strengths and weaknesses.
Smart light bulb
Tumblr media
The first concern for networked lighting is the light bulb itself, which is replaced with a smart light bulb with built-in wireless communication. Some bulbs like the Lifx and LifxWhite 800 LEDs have built-in Wi-Fi or Bluetooth – so you can connect directly to your phone or tablet without the need for a center or control unit. In a small area, this kind of plug-and-play is really simple and attractive, but each bulb is often expensive and expensive to use on a large scale.
The more common wireless lighting protocol is ZigBee. Using the ZigBee Philips Philips Hue LED, OSRAM Lightify LED, Belkin WeMo LED and GE Link LED, Cree Connected LED lamp, etc. $ 15. Your phone doesn’t recognize ZigBee, so you need some sort of central device or device that acts as a converter.
There are many packages that contain center or bridge equipment. The price of the package may vary, with a TCP dual-light package for around $50, and a $320 for the three-bulb Philips Hue. The price of each bulb varies, from $15 to $50 or $60, and higher-end bulbs can change color as needed.
The good news is that there are more and more products at the lower end. In many cases, different brands of bulbs can be mixed and matched under one control unit. The Philips Hue Bridge controller is the best example, and it works well with third-party bulbs, including the $15 GE and Cree bulbs. You can use the WeMo plug-in bridge to connect to the OSRAM Lightify LEDs and control the Belkin LEDs simultaneously on the WeMo application. Like systems like SmartThings and Staples Connect, you can also plug these bulbs into larger smart home settings by using a dedicated center.
Advantages: The setting of the bulb is relatively simple and can be easily moved to another device if needed. With a wide range of options, it won’t cost you a lot of use or a few more lights. You can buy a versatile light bulb for a little more money: changing colors, motion sensing, transmitting audio via Bluetooth, or acting as a networked camera.
Disadvantages: Most smart bulbs are A-shaped bulbs with a standard E-type screw-in base, so if you need a bulb like a candelabra, you’re not lucky. If the device is connected to the brightness control switch on the wall, the smart light bulb may flash and hum. There are not too many options for brightness and color temperature. Of course, if the switch is off, the bulb will not work.
Connected lighting to smart home settings, smart bulbs are the fastest and easiest, so they can be used wherever they are. Many of KASYN’s smart home devices require small spiral bulbs, however, there are dimmer switches that compete with them. This means we need to look at other options – this is our right:
Smart switch
Tumblr media
If you are willing to roll up your sleeves and play with the lines at home, you can easily replace the light switch with a smart switch. Automated is the switch itself, not the light bulb, which can be set to open/close.
Like smart light bulbs, most smart switches don’t use Wi-Fi or ZigBee. Wi-Fi mode such as Belkin WeMo lighting switch can be directly connected to your home network (mobile phone is also OK), and using ZigBee will require some kind of center or control device. There are also many high-end options for Lutron, the company uses its own proprietary Lutron signal for intelligent lighting control.
Most smart switches are around $50, and smart bulbs can be $15, and they can be bought more. In contrast, smart switches are more expensive. There are no smart bulbs to choose from. If you want another LED to be intelligent, you need to reinstall the replacement equipment.
Some smart switches have built-in smart dimming, which tends to cost a little more. You may also find that some smart switches have full-color touch screen displays, or built-in speaker and microphone walkie-talkie features, although not yet a major manufacturer. The closest target to WinkRelay, incorporating the smart switch and Quirky’s control center, cost millions to buy it back. Unfortunately, Quirky recently filed for bankruptcy and announced plans to sell Wink, the highest bidder.
Advantages: Smart switches, you can use any light bulb you want – if you have requirements for lighting, or if your equipment requires the size and shape of the light bulb, or the style of the smart light bulb does not match, the smart switch is perfect. It is. In many cases, the preset lighting changes will work even though the switch is off.
Disadvantages: Installation is more complicated than smart bulbs. If you want to move to a different device, you need to repeat this process. Expanding the size of the system is not as cost-effective as smart bulbs.
Smart plug socket
Tumblr media
Another smart lighting option worth considering is the smart plug or the smart socket on the wall. The premise is simple: automate any device with a plug or remotely control the switch via a smartphone app. Most smart plugs support all devices, but some are dedicated to the light with built-in dimming control.
The most common thing with a smart plug is the light. In general, it is wise and feasible to start a smart home from the automation of the lamp – if the plug is connected to a motion sensor, the light in the bedroom opens as soon as you enter the room. That’s why I always think that the $80 Belkin WeMo Switch + Motion combo pack is the best smart home to start with. New plugs such as iDevices Switch are also compatible with Apple’s own iOS platform, and smart voice-activated Siri can be played. The Belkin WeMo switch is compatible with Amazon Echo voice-activated smart speakers, so you can also turn it on or off with a verbal command.
Of course, being free can also automate things other than lights. Other small appliances, table fans, small heaters, coffee machines, etc. are also suitable for automation. You can also plug a smart plug or socket into a power strip to automate the device that plugs into the power strip at the same time, and automatically turn off the media center at night to prevent energy consumption and is very practical.
The smart plug can also be used to experience the simplicity of plug-and-play smart light bulbs. The plug is also very flexible. If you want to change the settings, just unplug it and move it elsewhere, or insert a different device. Smart sockets are obviously not as flexible as they need to be fixed to the wall, but give you a more seamless, integrated feel for a completely smart home.
Advantages: The setting of the smart socket is very simple, it is very easy for the smart home newbie to get started, and the smart socket seamless design, built-in smart home aesthetic design. In addition to automated lights, with a smart plug, you can automate any small appliance. There are a variety of smart sockets to choose from.
Disadvantages: The installation of smart sockets is more complicated than changing bulbs. Because the devices plugged into the socket can be automated, smart sockets and plugs can’t control hardwired lights and equipment. Like smart switches, the price of each plug/socket is usually higher than the price of a single smart bulb. Some plugs may also be priced at the same price as the entire outlet.
We are more likely to choose smarter bulbs and switches because they are more seamless and beautiful. Smart sockets also meet those standards. As for the smart plug, it will also be used when needed.
Which solution to choose depends on which system is used to control the equipment at home. We plan to install multiple devices from multiple manufacturers, so we want to find the possibility to get all the devices working together.

Brilliant Is my Favorite Smart Home Control
I’ve found my favorite smart home controller and its name is Brilliant. With a name like that, it could be difficult to live up to the hype, but the features and performance do just that. With a vivid touch screen display, Amazon Alexa built-in, and lots of smart home device integrations, it’s difficult to beat the Brilliant home control.
Each of Brilliant’s devices is built to replace a light switch in your home, whether it be a single switch, two switch, three switch, or four switch. This design makes so much sense because it allows for plug and play compatibility with almost any home. Each device has a gorgeous touch screen, camera, microphone, and speaker also built-in. Depending on the model, you’ll have one, two, or three slider controls that allow you to quickly switch your lights on or off or adjust the dimming level. If you have the single switch Brilliant controller, swiping up or down on the screen will turn your lights on or off.
Brilliant turns your existing lights into smart lights, whether they are LED, CFL, halogen, or incandescent, and as I mentioned, it works with dimmable lights. Brilliant works with some of the more popular smart home devices on the market, including Sonos, Ring, Hue, SmartThings, Ecobee, Schlage smart locks, and more. Thanks to the large touchscreen display and smart device integrations, Brilliant is one of the most approachable smart home controllers on the market today.
The approachability of Brilliant makes it the perfect smart home controller for families. My kids have already learned how to turn the lights on and off and dim them thanks to the intuitive user interface. It’s also a great smart home controller for people who have a lot of guests because you don’t want to have to explain your smart home system to them every time someone new arrives.
With Amazon’s Alexa built-in, you can now have Alexa in every room thanks to your Brilliant switches. You can do almost everything you can do with an Amazon Echo, except for playing music. It’s perfect for turning your lights on or off with your voice, asking for the weather forecast, or using other Alexa-compatible smart home device voice commands. When you ask for the weather forecast, Brilliant displays the forecast similar to how it would on an Amazon Echo Show. It’s a nice way to add voice control to your room in conjunction with Brilliant’s other great features.
The beautiful touchscreen is perfect for displaying your favorite family photos. Thankfully Brilliant has a great picture frame feature that cycles through selected photos while the control is not in use. You can simply upload your photos to the unit from Brilliant’s smartphone app, frame them just right, and you’re all set. We love seeing our family photos being cycled through on the Brilliant’s display, it’s a huge improvement to our old light switch.
Brilliant integrates with a ton of popular smart home devices. A full list of current integrations includes:
Amazon Alexa
Google Assistant
Apple Homekit (coming soon)
Philips Hue
Lifx
Wemo
Lutron
Leviton
Nest
Ecobee
Honeywell
Ring
August
Kwikset
Schlage
Yale
Emtek
ButterflyMX (coming soon)
Sonos
Samsung SmartThings
Our friends at Brilliant were kind enough to send over two separate devices; one 2-switch control and one 1-switch control, which allowed us to test Brilliant’s video intercom feature. We installed the two switch unit in the kitchen where we have our recessed lights and pendant lights switched separately while we installed the single switch in our bedroom. The kitchen is a perfect place for our Brilliant controller as it’s the central point of our home. We love having our photos displayed on the vivid display while also having the ability to control all of our smart home devices from that central location.
Ring live view
Installation is as easy as removing your existing light switch and replacing it with the Brilliant control. You’ll want to have some basic electrical knowledge, but it was very easy to do from a guy who is admittedly not the most handy man on the block. The basic installation steps are as follows:
Turn off electrical circuit
Uninstall existing switch, remove wires
Install Brilliant control by connecting wires, screw Brilliant control into the wall
Slide front screen onto backplate
Turn on electrical circuit
Check out some photos from my installation:
Throughout our time with Brilliant, we’ve been impressed with the way the devices make us feel like we’re in the future. From being too lazy to get out of bed and saying “Alexa, turn off the bedroom lights” to being able to see who’s at the front door via the light switch in our kitchen, we think the Brilliant smart home control is the way to go if you want a user-friendly smart home.
Vivid family photos
With the Ring integration, we were able to see who was at the front door or watch the live view of our cameras while being able to have two-way conversations. With the Sonos integration, you can see what’s currently playing, choose a new playlist, change volume, and more. While we don’t have any smart locks currently installed, we could see how that integration would be incredibly useful.
Video intercom
We also really liked the video intercom feature. Being able to quickly check in on what’s going on downstairs is a neat feature if the kids are playing while the adults are upstairs. It worked well and there was very little lag. There are a lot of settings and customizability you can do with the Brilliant’s settings, including whether you want the screen off most of the time, or if you want it to turn on when the camera senses motion. You can also set the lights to turn on or off when motion is sensed. Settings are easy to change within Brilliant’s great user interface.
App screenshot while framing photos
Since it’s my job to look at both the positives and negatives, I’ll mention the few downsides that I found in testing. First, Brilliant is not compatible with ALL smart home devices. You’ll want to review the full list of integrations to make sure your devices work with it before purchasing. Second, there isn’t a lot of room for adjustment to make sure your Brilliant is level. If you have an older home and your recessed junction box for the light switch is crooked, you’ll notice that your Brilliant is cooked too. The crooked light switch is much more obvious when you have a gorgeous touchscreen on the wall compared to a bland light switch. The single switch Brilliant is a bit crooked in our bedroom and I did as much as I could to straighten it out. While not the end of the world, adjustability during installation is something Brilliant could improve on. Third, and least important, is that the Brilliant will be a magnet for your kids’ attention. They WILL want to touch it all the time until they get used to it, so be warned.
Simple setup
Overall, we’re huge fans of the Brilliant smart home controller. It was easy to install, assuming simple electrical knowledge, has great features including a gorgeous, crystal clear touchscreen display, and integrates with a number of smart home devices. All of our guests have been impressed with the aesthetics and functionality and we can’t say we blame them.
You can get your Brilliant smart home control directly from Brilliant.tech.
Source: Manufacturer supplied review sample
What I Like:  Well designed in both aesthetics and features; Beautiful, vivid touchscreen display; Easy to install; Easy to set up and use; Compatible with great smart home device brands
What Needs Improvement: Not compatible with all devices/brands; Not a lot of adjustability to level the screen; Will draw kids like a moth to a flame
