“No, you don’t,” cut Jongin, shaking his head. “This is unauthorised. What you’re doing is in no way associated with the police force and our plans. Even if Kyungsoo is helping you, he can’t do much without getting in trouble with our superiors. Because he’s off the case. He’s going against orders.”

“You think I don’t know that!” burst Kyungsoo suddenly. “I know, goddamnit, I know I’m off the fucking case. But I can’t let that bastard go. I have to catch him. And if this is the only way, then so be it.”

Jongin crossed his arms over his chest. “And why have you decided to even tell me then? If you’re handling things so well on your own?”

“Because we need help,” you said softly. “Jongin, Baekhyun is heading to Dubai tomorrow. And I have to go with him. And Kyungsoo...he can’t do this by himself. If you can come too, it would improve our chances of success twofold.”

Jongin’s eyebrows perked. “Baekhyun? Is that what our elusive guy’s name is?”

You nodded. “I’ve seen his face, too.”

“It’s more than we’ve gotten over the past 6 months of trying to track him,” said Kyungsoo, a wry smile on his face. “Even you have to admit that.”

Jongin scratched the back of his head. “Fine. Fuck it. I’ll tell them I’ve got a lead on his whereabouts, but that because I’m not sure, there’s no need for the entire team to come. That we don’t want another false alarm that ends in further embarrassment.”

You sighed in relief.

“Kyungsoo and I will take the next flight there, after you’ve gone. If he ever even catches on in the slightest that you’re undercover...” Jongin broke off.

“He’ll kill you,” finished Kyungsoo, looking you straight in the eyes. “This is a dangerous game we’re playing, Y/N. We can’t afford any mistakes. He cannot, under any circumstances know that you’re with us.”

You swallowed.

“Then let’s just hope we catch him before it comes to that.”

You weren’t sure exactly what you were expecting when you landed in Dubai, but the blinding sun took you completely by surprise.

You squinted against the sky as you stepped out of the airport, one hand on your luggage and the other covering your eyes against the glaring light.

You already felt much too hot, and you shrugged off the outer jacket you had on, letting out a breath as the hot air grazed the bare skin of your arms. You furrowed your eyebrows as you stared at the address on your phone, the one Baekhyun had sent you and told you to go to.

The Palm? You shrugged and hailed a cab, and handed the driver your phone to show him where to go. He looked back at you with his eyes wide in awe, and then nodded fervently.

A bit unnerved by his reaction, you sat back, letting your gaze wander to the sights outside the window. You couldn’t help it as your lips parted in wonder, at the towering buildings around you, their glass windows shimmering as the sunlight reflected off their surfaces.

The roads were massive, with cars of all sizes zooming down at incredible speeds, and you bit back a gasp as your taxi driver decided he wanted to follow suit, speeding up so that the city flew right by your eyes.

You blinked in confusion, though, when your bright surroundings were suddenly replaced by a dark tunnel, that seemed to go on endlessly. The taxi driver seemed to notice your bewilderment, because he laughed and said “We’re under the sea, miss!”

“Under the sea?” you asked in surprise. He nodded in response. “Yes, this tunnel connects the mainland to The Palm islands. You’ll be able to see in just a few moments.”

The car was filled with light once again, and you were met with towering buildings once again, but different to the glittering ones you’d seen already. If you didn’t know any better, you wouldn’t have even guessed that you were now on an island.

But you could see the sea now, blue and glistening in the sun, and you rolled your window down as the slightly salty breeze whipped past you. The Palm. The island that was shaped like a palm tree, the trunk and leaves and all, and circled by a crescent. The taxi driver informed you that you were driving along the trunk, which broke off into different fronds to both the left as well as the right.

And then he was gone, leaving you standing in front of a beach villa with no clue of what to do next. You uncertainly began to drag your carry on towards the front door, suddenly unsure of how to react upon meeting Baekhyun.

Just then, your phone buzzed. A message from the man himself.

You pressed the numbers into the dial, pushing open the front door. And your jaw fell open. The villa had been impressive from the outside, with its glass windows and massive size, but the inside was a different story.

The floor was shining marble, the ceiling high and dripping in a glittering chandelier. A spiralling staircase was on your right, while to your left sprawled a lavish living room, complete with brown leather sofas and white fur rugs. A large flat screen tv was mounted on the wall, and lush green plants were dotted around the room.

The place looked like something out of a movie, and as you took the steps on the staircase two at a time, your eyes widened in further surprise when you realized the second storey was just as spacious. There seemed to be more than four bedrooms, and after looking into all of them, you picked the one you liked the best.

It was big, with floor to ceiling windows that looked over the sea. But the huge, circular bed drew your attention, fitted with silky grey sheets and large pillows. Even the bathroom was impressive, with both a shower and a tub, and you gratefully pulled off your clothes, stepping in and letting the warm water wash your tiredness away.

You checked the time once you were done. 3 p.m. The afternoon sun was shining through the room, covering it in a lackadaisical glow of hazy light.

Too lazy to wander back down to find the kitchen, you decided to make do with half the sandwich you still had packed from the airport. You scrolled through your phone, glad to see a message from Kyungsoo informing you that him and Jongin had just boarded the plane. He would be there soon.

Before you knew it, your eyes were drooping, the warmth from the sun as well as the smoothness of the silky sheets making it near impossible for you to stay awake. It had been a long flight, and you hadn’t got much sleep. And so you curled up, your eyes fluttering shut, and fell fast asleep.

You only woke when your stomach grumbled uncomfortably, seemingly unsatisfied with the sandwich you’d eaten earlier. You blinked sleepily, pushing yourself off the bed, and the setting sun outside told you that it was well into the evening. Once again, the view outside the windows managed to take your breath away. The sunset was beautiful, and its orange hues were cast over the sea, making the waves sparkle in light.

You sighed, shuffling out of your room and finally heading down to the kitchen to get some much needed food. The kitchen, like everything else in the house, was huge; airy and spacious and smelling a lot like the sea.

You stopped in your tracks though, when you realize someone was in there.

He had his back to you, and you jumped in surprise when he spoke.

“Sleep well?”

He turned then, his lips lifting in a slight smile, his brown hair somehow looking perfectly messy as he shook it off his forehead.

Baekhyun.

You swallowed, nodding awkwardly as you perched yourself on one of the tall chairs that were at the shining glass dining table.

It was as if he sensed how desperate you were for food, because the next thing you knew, he was sliding a plate of elaborate looking salad across to you. You frowned. Although it looked appetizing, you were craving something more.

“Thanks,” you mumbled, awkwardly as he sat down opposite you, sipping a glass of water. “You don’t really look like a chef.” “And you don’t really look like a thief,” he replied, and you felt your face grow warm for some reason. You avoided his gaze, instead poking at the lettuce in your plate.

Baekhyun cocked his head to one side, watching. “You know, you don’t have to force yourself to eat that if you don’t want to.”

You bit your lip.

“Is there anything unhealthy in here?”

A half hour later you were sitting cross legged on the fluffy rug in the living room, biting into a large slice of pizza as Baekhyun chuckled.

“Do you want some?” you asked with your mouth full, offering a slice to him. He shrugged, accepting it and sliding down the couch to sit on the rug with you.

“Don’t get any of the sauce on here,” he warned. “The stain will never come off.”

You snorted. “So this is your house?” “No. But it belongs to a friend of mine. It’s nice, huh?”

“Nice is an understatement. It’s beautiful,” you said, looking around wistfully. “I could live here forever.” “Don’t get too used to it sweetheart. We’re only here for as long as we get the job done. Which is soon,” he drawled.

You scowled. “I would really appreciate you telling me what the ‘job’ is, thanks. You practically forced me to come here without me knowing anything at all. It’s unfair.”

“What’s unfair is you pulling my mask off without my permission,” he snapped, his dark eyes narrowing. “I make the rules here, don’t forget that.”

You glowered at him, and he glowered back, both of you still chewing on pizza while engaging in an adamant staring contest.

“You have something on your lip,” Baekhyun said finally, his eyes breaking contact with yours as they fell to your mouth instead. You brought your thumb up to wipe off what you assumed was pizza sauce, furrowing your eyebrows when you saw that nothing came away on your finger.

Baekhyun sighed somewhat irritably, and your eyes widened as he leaned forward and swiped his thumb across the side of your lip, getting the sauce off successfully.

He sat back looking satisfied, licking it off his thumb before taking another bite of pizza.

It took a few seconds for the intimacy of the action to dawn on the both you.

“What do you think you’re doing?” you blurted, feeling your cheeks burn a furious shade of crimson. Baekhyun went equally red. “I—you didn’t wipe it off right!” he sputtered, and you gaped at him. “That didn’t mean you could just do that,” you said in disbelief. “And y-you just—licked it off your finger—”

“I didn’t mean it like that,” he snapped, rolling his eyes. “It was involuntary, okay? I’m not trying to fuck you or anything. Don’t get too excited.”

Your cheeks burned in humiliation, the crudeness of his words sending an uncomfortable jab through your chest. “Fuck off,” you said lowly, standing up. “You’re vile.”

And then you stormed off, out of the house and away from him, suddenly hating everything about your situation. Who did he think he was, to talk to you like that? You should have slapped him in the face. “Asshole,” you muttered under your breath.

It wasn’t until your feet sunk into sand that you realized you’d stumbled onto the beach. With a start, it struck you that the beach was right behind the villa, a small strip that was cordoned off for just that plot of land.

The villa had its very own private beach.

You flopped down onto the sand, sighing loudly. The sky was completely void of stars, something you thought was quite strange. The only brightness was the moon, not quite whole, but glowing nonetheless.

You shut your eyes, drawing your knees up to your chest, imagining Kyungsoo there beside you. You already missed him. His stern, honey like voice telling you not to worry, the soft curve of his full lips when he laughed. You wanted him to land quickly and take you away from this, from Baekhyun and his plans.

But how could he, when you’d brought this upon yourself?

You opened your eyes when you heard the clearing of a throat, automatically setting your lips into a thin line when you realized that Baekhyun had plonked himself on the sand next to you.

“I’m sorry,” he said, sounding a little awkward. “I probably shouldn’t have said anything at all. I made things weird and then...they got weirder.”

You snorted. “You think?”

“I’m just...I’m sorry, okay? Forget any of that happened,” he said again, and you rolled your eyes. “You aren’t used to apologizing, are you?”

He smiled wryly. “Not really. Like I said, I make all the rules. The ones who break the rules apologize, not me.”

You let out an exasperated breath. “I get it, you’re a control freak. But at least tell me why the hell we’re here?”

“Have you heard of the Sunset Jewel?”

You looked at him in confusion at this sudden question. “It sounds familiar.”

“It’s a diamond. An incredibly rare, pink diamond. It’s nearly priceless,” said Baekhyun, and you raised your eyebrows. “Two years ago, it went missing from where it was being safe guarded in a high-security vault in Paris. The key words here being high-security.”

“And?”

And I plan on stealing it.”

You stared at him. “You’re joking, right?”

“Do I look like I’m joking?” he deadpanned. “You asked to know the plan. I’m telling you. We’re going to steal the Sunset Jewel from right under Exo’s noses.”

All you could say was “How?”

“The leader’s sister is getting married here, at the Atlantis Hotel, in a week’s time. The diamond is going to be a part of the myriad of gifts I’m sure he’s planning on endowing her with. We infiltrate the wedding, we steal the diamond,” he said simply.

“But obviously it’s not going to be as easy as that,” you said. “This is a mafia we’re talking about. They’re not going to let us walk right in and take their precious diamond, and especially not the in the middle of a wedding, of all things. They’ll probably have the entire place secured.”

Baekhyun’s eyes glinted in the moonlight.

“Stop calling me that,” you snapped, irritated once again. But your mind was working furiously, and you were already bursting to tell Kyungsoo everything. “And if I don’t?” you challenged, glaring at him. “I’m not so sure you want to find out, sweetheart,” he replied, smirking.
