Experience the Magic of Greece: Rent a Boat and Set Sail!
Greece, with its stunning coastline and myriad of islands, offers a captivating experience for adventurers seeking to explore the wonders of the Aegean and Ionian Seas. While mainland Greece boats ancient ruins and bustling cities, it’s the allure of the Greek islands that truly captures the imagination. And what better way to discover these gems than by renting a boat and setting sail into the azure waters?
Tumblr media
The Greek islands are synonymous with paradise, each offering its own unique charm and beauty. From the iconic whitewashed buildings of Santorini to the lush landscapes of Corfu, there’s something enchanting about these sun-drenched destinations. By renting a boat, you may set your own itinerary and explore remote beaches, undiscovered coves, and charming towns along the way.
Choosing the Right Boat
Before embarking on your Greek adventure, it’s essential to select the right boat for your needs. Consider factors such as size, amenities, and budget. Whether you prefer the luxury of a motor yacht or the simplicity of a sailboat, there are options to suit every preference and pocket.
Planning Your Route
With thousands of islands to explore, planning your route is key to making the most of your sailing experience. While popular destinations like Mykonos and Rhodes are must-sees, don’t overlook the charm of lesser-known islands like Milos and Symi. Researching the best anchorages and attractions ensures a seamless and enjoyable journey.
Preparing for Your Trip
Packing the right essentials is crucial for a successful sailing trip. Sunscreen, hats, and lightweight clothing are a must, along with seasickness remedies and first aid supplies. Safety should always be a priority, so familiarize yourself with emergency procedures and ensure your boat is equipped with necessary safety equipment.
Navigating Greek Waters
Navigating the waters around the Greek islands requires a basic understanding of maritime rules and regulations. Keep an eye on weather forecasts and be prepared to adapt your plans accordingly. While the summer months offer calm seas and clear skies, unexpected changes in weather can occur, so vigilance is key.
Tumblr media
Exploring Greek Islands
Each Greek island has its own distinct character and charm, from the cosmopolitan vibe of Mykonos to the rugged beauty of Crete. Take the time to explore both well-known hotspots and off-the-beaten-path destinations, immersing yourself in local culture and cuisine along the way.
Immersing in Greek Culture
Greek culture is rich in history, tradition, and hospitality. Take the opportunity to learn about local customs and traditions, whether it’s joining in a traditional Greek dance or sampling regional delicacies at a waterfront taverna. Engaging with the local community adds depth and authenticity to your sailing experience.
Activities Beyond Sailing
While sailing is undoubtedly the main attraction, there’s no shortage of activities to enjoy during your time ashore. Snorkel in crystal-clear waters, hike scenic trails, or simply relax on sun-drenched beaches. The Greek islands offer something for everyone, whether you’re a thrill-seeker or a laid-back traveler.
Budgeting Tips
Sailing in Greece can be surprisingly affordable, especially if you’re willing to forgo luxury amenities in favor of a more authentic experience. Budget-conscious travelers can save money by cooking onboard, anchoring in free or low-cost harbors, and taking advantage of local markets for provisions.
Sustainable Sailing Practices
As stewards of the sea, it’s important to minimize our impact on the marine environment. Practice eco-friendly habits such as reducing waste, conserving water, and avoiding single-use plastics. Respect marine life by observing from a distance and refraining from feeding or disturbing wildlife.
Safety Measures
Safety should always be a top priority when sailing in unfamiliar waters. Familiarize yourself with emergency protocols and ensure all passengers are aware of safety procedures. Carry a well-stocked first aid kit and know how to use it in case of injury or illness.
Choosing the Right Time to Sail
The best time to sail in Greece depends on your preferences and priorities. Summer months offer warm temperatures and calm seas, but also attract larger crowds of tourists. Spring and autumn offer milder weather and fewer visitors, making it an ideal time for those seeking a quieter sailing experience.
Benefits of Sailing with a Crew
While solo sailing can be a rewarding experience, sailing with a crew offers numerous benefits. Shared responsibilities make tasks easier and more enjoyable, while the camaraderie of a close-knit crew adds to the overall sense of adventure.
Capturing Memorable Moments
Don’t forget to capture the magic of your Greek sailing adventure through photos and journaling. Documenting your experiences allows you to relive your journey long after you’ve returned home. From stunning sunsets to chance encounters with local wildlife, every moment is worth preserving.
Conclusion: Embrace the Adventure
Sailing in Greece offers a unique opportunity to explore some of the world’s most beautiful islands at your own pace. Whether you’re an experienced sailor or a novice adventurer, the magic of Greece awaits. So hoist the sails, feel the wind in your hair, and embark on the adventure of a lifetime.
Is sailing experience necessary to rent a boat in Greece?
While sailing experience is beneficial, many boat rental companies offer skippered or crewed charters for those without sailing skills.
What are the visa requirements for sailing in Greece?
Citizens of many countries, including the EU, the USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, do not require a visa for short visits to Greece.
Are there age restrictions for renting a boat in Greece?
Age restrictions vary depending on the type of boat and rental company. Most landlords demand that tenants be at least eighteen years old.
Can I bring pets on a sailing trip in Greece?
Some boat rental companies allow pets onboard, but it’s essential to check their pet policy and any additional fees before booking.
What happens in case of medical emergencies at sea?
In case of medical emergencies, contact the nearest port authority or coastguard for assistance. It’s essential to have travel insurance that covers medical evacuation and treatment.

Great British Traditions
Emma Swan is an American student in Nottingham, who's been invited by her friend Killian Jones to spend Boxing Day with him, to see what’s so special about the 26th December.
It was the delightful @distant-rose‘s birthday last Saturday. However I was deep in the throes of celebrating her birthday twin’s special day, my own Tiny Giant. I’m sorry that this is so late dear, I’m not so good with the deadlines. This is intended to be part of a big story, but I think stands alone and I hope it makes you laugh. If you like it, let me know and I’ll get the rest written.
“So … What's Boxing Day all about? Does Mike Tyson come down the chimney to give all the ungrateful girls and boys a punch in the face?”
“He should do, but no, it’s a time for leftovers, family and board games traditionally I gather. But for me, it's all about the football.” Killian scratched behind his ear, before smirking at her. “Proper football that is.”
“What’s soccer -” she emphasised the word just to rile Killian up “- got to do with anything? Shouldn’t you be watching, I don’t know, replays of Muhammad Ali fights?”
“I’m going to ignore your funny little colloquialism, you can’t help being born amongst the savages across the pond after all, and extend to you some proper British hospitality, and ask you to join me for the football. What do you say, Swan? Want to experience a traditional Boxing Day the Jones way?”
And that’s how Emma found herself in a Wetherspoons in Nottingham on 26th December, merry on more than a few pints, surrounded by happy Manchester United fans singing at the top of their lungs. “Glory, gloorrrryy, Man U-niiiiiii-ted!”
“We won!” Killian was weeping openly. “In your face Mourinho, you wanker! It’s like Christmas!”
Emma laughed at him. “Funny you should say that -” She broke off with an undignified, disgruntled squeak of alarm as Killian scooped her up and spun her round.
“I’m so happy I could kiss you!” He said the words in a rush, clearly swept up in a tide of sports-induced euphoria and schadenfreude over the club’s success in the wake of the disgraced former-manager’s recent firing.
That’s when they both realised how close they were to each other.
Killian slowly set her back on her feet, but kept his arms around her. She found herself gazing at his lips, transfixed by how perfect they were. The singing faded in her mind to a dull hum in the background, her ears zeroing in on the sound of Killian’s panting. He sounded wrecked. So did she.
She could feel the warmth of his breath on her skin, the heat of his arms surrounding her, and yet the feel of him so close to her was sending goosebumps across her skin as she shivered in anticipation.
The tension between them was growing, threatening to turn into a monster that would devour them whole. She found that she didn’t much mind the thought if it meant that she could kiss Killian.
Someone knocked into them and sent them flying to the ground. Killian lept to his feet and offered his hand out to help her up. She went to take it, but was distracted by something hovering just above his head.
There was mistletoe above them.
“Everything alright, love?”
Emma shook herself and allowed Killian to help pull her up. “Yeah, I’m fine, it’s just, well there’s mistletoe.”
He looked up then back to her with a grin. “I think a little festive offering is in order,” he said, tapping at his lips with a cheeky swagger.
“Please, you couldn’t handle it.” She dismissed him with a hint of a smile playing at her lips, enjoying the flirting in spite of herself.
He moved closer to her. “Perhaps you’re the one who couldn’t handle it.” She could hear the smirk in his voice, his challenge to her set. And for once, she was ready for it.
She seized him and pulled him close, practically leaping on him in her eagerness to kiss him. He was stunned at first, but it only took him half a second to catch up and throw himself into the kiss with joyful abandon.
He wrapped his arms around her, apparently as desperate as she was to get closer, his hands finding their way under her shirt.
“Get a room!” someone yelled at them breaking the spell they were under.
But Emma wasn’t quite ready to give up the magic yet. “Let’s get out of here,” she whispered decisively into Killian’s ear.
He looked dazed. “Yeah?”
When she nodded he grabbed her hand, lacing their fingers together and tugging her towards the exit eagerly. He weaved in and out of pot-bellied football fans with tears in their eyes, giggly and glassy-eyed slightly orange women and furtive teenagers slurping on their bacardi breezers and looking around in glee, thrilled with their own success at getting served.
It took a ridiculously frustrating amount of time to get to the doors of the pub. Killian pushed her up against the door and kissed her roughly and quickly. “Right, taxi, I can’t wait any longer.”
They stumbled their way through the Market Square, past the crowds shrieking “Merry Christmas!” and the merrymakers stumbling away from the garish lights and the discordant music emanating from the fake snow-encrusted Winter Wonderland in the square.
Killian steadily guided her towards a taxi rank, propelling her forward with fierce determination. He sped up a little on seeing that there was only one taxi waiting and a group of revellers was staggering towards it. They reached it first and she heard him mutter a little “ha!” of celebration under his breath.
“108 Portland Road,” he said to the driver, as he opened the door to the black cab and helped Emma in, following her in eagerly. As soon as he had closed the door behind him, he moved for her, capturing her lips in a kiss that quite literally took her breath away.
She pushed back a little to gasp for air and he nibbled along her jaw, making her pant harder. “Don’t you -” he nuzzled behind her ear, then started kissing his way down her neck. “Maybe we should w -” he found that perfect spot on her neck that made her gasp as he sucked it. “Wait?” she asked, entirely losing track of what she’d been trying to say.
“We’re here,” said the bored-sounding driver, louder than seemed entirely necessary. Even if Emma could admit to herself that she likely wouldn’t have heard him without the yelling.
Killian shoved a tenner at him, which Emma was sure was far too much for a five minute ride, if that. “Merry whatever you celebrate mate,” he said, and opened the door, once more finding Emma’s hand and helping her out.
It was Emma’s turn to distract him. As he fumbled about for his keys and tried to unlock the door she wrapped herself around him and pushed her fingers under his shirt, allowing just the tips to brush under his waistband. When he finally got the door open he spun around and gave her a fake glare.
“Bloody hell, you’ll be the death of me, Swan!” he said and pulled them into the house kissing and laughing their way to the stairs.
He tried to walk backwards up the stairs while still kissing her. His foot slipped and he stumbled, so she grabbed onto him and pulled him steady, giggling.
“Are you laughing at me, Swan?” he growled.
“What would you do about it if I -” he swooped her up into his arms. He swayed a little as he got used to her weight, then steadying himself, he carried her determinedly up the stairs.
He made her to the second floor house before he dropped her unceremoniously. “Sorry, love, had an awkward grip on you.”
She laughed out loud this time. “Yeah, yeah, awkward grip. Thanks for trying to spare my feelings, but I know I was too heavy.”
He blushed - right to the pointy tips of his elen ears - and shook his head emphatically. “Don’t impugn my honour, Swan! I’ve carried crates of beer heavier than you.”
She rolled her eyes. “Sure.”
This time he picked her up and threw her over his shoulder while she shrieked in surprise. They made it up to Killian’s room without further incident, whereupon he threw her onto the bed. And crawled on top of her. Or tried to. She had forgotten that Killian had the world’s smallest bed in a room big enough to fit at least two luxury king size beds in with room to spare. They both shuffled awkwardly, trying to find space on the pathetic waste of space calling itself a bed. Fucking student housing and their cheap ass beds.
It was ruining the moment to the extent that she started to wonder if hooking up with Killian was really such a great idea.
But then looked at her with his smouldering eyes. “Having second thoughts? We don’t have to.” And she wanted to again, she really wanted to.
She pressed her mouth to his, a light kiss, a reassurance. “Nope, I’m still in,” she said, and to prove her point she sat up and pulled her top off. At least, she intended to pull her top off. She actually twisted herself around awkwardly, getting herself somehow caught in the sleeves as she tried to pull it over her head. She tugged hard to free herself and fell backwards onto the floor.
“Are you hurt?” Killian’s voice was muffled by her top currently masquerading as a ski mask. She wriggled a little, finally got it off and looked up to see Killian peering down at her over the edge of his bed.
“I totally meant to do that,” she said, he merely raised an eyebrow in surprise. “It’s my latest party trick. Might need some work.”
She got to her feet and held her hand out to him, he looked confused but took it and allowed her to pull him upright. She planted a kiss on his lips before her brain could catch onto the fact that everything seemed to be telling them that this was not a good plan. She took his hands and guided them to her bra clasp. “I figure it’s safer if you undress me, I seem to have forgotten how.”
He grinned and kissed her again, pulling back just enough to murmur, “I’d be delighted to show you how it’s done.”
He kissed her slow, deep and dizzying as he stripped off her clothes one by one. He trailed kisses down her legs while he eased her out of her trousers setting her nerves alight with every touch of his lips. When she was completely naked he gently guided her to the bed and sat her on the edge of it. He settled on his knees between her legs and just seeing him there sent ripples of excitement and anticipation running through her.
She pounced on him, kissing him with all the force she could muster, desperate to feel him closer to her. “Clothes off, now,” she demanded with a grin.
“Aye aye captain,” he said and began to unbutton his shirt, letting his hands brush against her as he went.
When he was finally naked she pulled him down for another kiss and tried to pull him on top of her, but she was once again thwarted by the minuscule proportions of the bed. They were shuffling uncomfortably, kissing then moving, trying to find space to be together.
“I give up!” Emma announced, “let’s just fuck on the floor.”
Killian let out a snort of laughter, but then his eyes filled with desire and he kissed her hard. “You’re a marvel,” he said sincerely and leapt to his feet. She rolled over towards him, grumbling internally that he seemed to possess more grace when drunk than she did sober.
When she stood up he surprised her by pulling the duvet off the bed and throwing it neatly to the ground instead of kissing her.
“Huh?”
“I don’t fancy carpet burn,” he explained with a shrug, then lay down on the duvet.
Emma immediately climbed on top of him, her body still screaming for his through all of the awkwardness. She pressed herself onto him, kissing him as she shifted her hips into just the right position and for one moment it was completely and utterly perfect. Then they both moved at once. And their foreheads collided with a painful, audible crack.
“Oh fuck!” “Bloody hell”
And Emma started to laugh at the sheer ridiculousness of the whole situation. She had decided to do something completely absurd and have a one night stand with a good friend and it was a disaster. She was lying on the floor - well, on him - cold as hell and nursing what felt like the beginnings of concussion. Nothing about it was funny to her. But she couldn’t stop laughing. Killian Jones, her friend, was literally inside her and she was in hysterics, struggling to breathe through the waves of laughter that kept bubbling out of her until tears sprang to her eyes and her stomach muscles hurt.
She chanced a glance at Killian and was relieved to see that he was laughing too. She finally recovered enough to move off of him and she immediately felt cold.
He must have seen her shiver because he went over to his drawer and pulled out a jumper and some jogging bottoms and threw them over to her. She turned her back on him to pull the clothes on, which seemed faintly ridiculous, but now that the night was certainly not going to have a happy ending, she felt embarrassed for him to see her naked.
When she turned back around he was dressed too, and a little pink in the cheeks. “I promise, I’m usually good at this,” he said.
“Yeah yeah, keep telling yourself that.”
“Speak for yourself! Your moves weren’t all that either!”
She laughed at him. “Can we just pretend that this never happened and never tell the others?”
“Absolutely, you think I want Scarlett knowing that instead of orgasms I gave us both potential concussions? I’d never live it down.”
“Right. Good. So … What now?”
“How does leftovers and board games sound?”
“Perfect.”

Finders Keepers ch5 Sneak Peek
It was an unspoken fact that history was written by its victors and its sufferers. It culminates in a selective retelling of events that is passed down via the education systems located throughout the galaxies.
During the time of the Last Corporate War—with the survivors being Anshin, Atlas, Dahl, Hyperion, Jakobs, Maliwan, Pangolin, S&S Munitions, Tediore, Vladof, and other megacorporations—only one emerged to stand at the forefront of innovation. With the fortunate excavation on the planet Promethea, Atlas Corporation had reverse-engineered the alien Eridian technology to give themselves an edge over their competitors.
With the discovery came a new line of machines, starships, and weaponry that were to be manufactured, as well as the earlier prototypes of the digistruct technology. Eventually all that led to the colonization of the planet Pandora and a monopoly of the interplanetary scale, allowing Atlas control over a significant portion of the market for goods and services. Their success had spurred on other megacorporations to explore other frontier planets in search of more alien technology and similar resources.
Yet of the numerous planets that made up the solar system, only a few of them were well-known intergalactically.
Many knew Aquator to be a scenic tourist hotspot with its many small islands to vacation on.
Athenas was known to be a planet governed by the Order of the Impending Storm—a religious monastic sect whose influence reached all aspects of their civilization.
Dionysus was a party planet, known for visitors’ drunken escapees and the tourist tagline “what happens in Dionysus, stays in Dionysus.”
Hermes was a planet with a thin atmosphere that was rich in helium, orbiting around a giant blue star instead of the sun.
Pandora was one of the frontier planets, recently colonized by Atlas—and other megacorporations like Dahl and Hyperion—as a research test site and as a settlement.
The last was Promethea, an environment of harsh extraterrestrial living conditions because of the excessive mining, rapid industrialization, martial law, and the like.
Planets like Artemis, Demophon, Eden-5, Eden-6, Eden-7, Epitah, Eunomia, Grophic IV, Hephaestus, Hera, Hestias, Hieronymous, Honus 4651, Isolus, Menoetius, Tantalus, Themis, and Thrace had their own reputations, but they were universally regarded to be on the same respectable level as the old planetary system.
Modeled after Earth, all of the Edens founded were known to be settlements of research, boasting of academic excellence, selectivity in admissions, and social elitism. Only the brightest—or the wealthy—were allowed citizenship or temporary student visas, to learn at the competing prestigious institutions and to increase their prospects of being hired by a megacorporation. Largely peaceful, the citizens of these planets were accustomed to a life of high-tech luxuries.
And unlike Eden-5 whose reputation was overshadowed by their corrupt police force, Eden-7 had some of the largest university financial endowments which allowed for many resources for their academic programs and research endeavors.
Bordering the main hub of the city was a tall building. Not quite a skyscraper, the architecture resembled that of an industrial hangar that had been elongated to touch the skies.
Pulling into the nearest available parking spot, a well-dressed long-limbed man emerged from a black vehicle. His hair seemed to have a burnished bronze luster from the sun.
Smoothing out the nonexistent wrinkles in his suit and anxiously adjusting his tie, he walked around to the passenger side to retrieve a clunky robotic prototype. Pressing the ON/OFF button, he waited for it to finish activation.
Snatching the laptop briefcase in the meanwhile, he murmured to the floating device, “Alright, it’s our moment to shine, Dumpy.” Closing the door with a nudge of his hip, he pocketed the key fob after hearing the car beep. “We got this in the bag.” He smacked the briefcase. “Confidence is the key.”
A deep, synthetic baritone—the voice package belonged to the deceased actor James Earl Jones—replied in the affirmative.
Deliberately tilting his chin up, Rhys left the parking with Dumpy whirring in the air quietly beside him. Not once did he allow himself to look down at his feet or to avoid eye contact.
At this time, even with the employees retiring for the night, it seemed the world was at its usual and undisturbed.
The uniforms that Atlas personnel wore was a curious mix of business and military dress code, which was what distinguished one from the other. Red accents were intermingled in a mostly dark or neutral color palette.
Cyborgs—humans having undergone cybernetic enhancement surgery such as bionic limbs or microchip implants—and androids were virtually indistinguishable. A usual sight, they shambled along with the rest of the unaugmented humans.
Soon, Rhys spotted an interesting individual among the crowd that wound around a giant statue. The first thought that came to his head was the word “white;” her hair and skin were bleached of all color, like a ghost.
The woman was dressed in a furred-collar military vest worn over a black T- shirt that exposed her midriff. Leather trousers hugged her figure, as well as her knee-high boots. Even as she marched her back was ramrod-straight, like a sword forged of steel. Likely due to the leather material of the long opera-length gloves she wore, they reminded Rhys of the black rubber gloves that a butcher would use instead of a fashionable evening accessory.
There was even a large Bowie knife strapped to the belt and a gun holster. Since the sight of her didn’t cause anyone alarm, he could only assume that she was authorized to carry weapons in plain sight.
She drew several stares from passersby, which Rhys suspected wasn’t only for her distinguishing features.
He narrowed his eyes. There was the smallest sense of recognition, although it escaped his memory of how and where he has seen her before. As they traveled, the waning sun could be seen through the openings placed strategically throughout the compound. A gradience of crimsons, oranges, and golds was suffused over the rigid gunmetal grays.
The building was once a product of its times—an outdated corporate steel-and-glass facade—before the property on the real estate market had been purchased by the CEO. During the initial remodeling phase, the exposed foundation and rusted structure made it appear like a skeleton with its flesh peeled off.
The soles of his shoes were clacking against the industrial-sized plates as Rhys craned his neck, spotting the Atlas logo affixed overhead. Neon yellow LED tubing was installed throughout the architecture.
The crowd had thinned at the entrance, where the woman was headed toward. By this time, the premises was mostly deserted.
That illusion of calm was shattered when the woman jerked to a sudden halt.
A split second later, she evaded the gunshots by pitching her body into a barrel roll. Scorched dents were left in the metal where she once stood.
Slamming her hand and feet onto the ground, the woman regained balance. She had already been in mid-motion of reaching into her holster, but she froze up at the sight of the two guns trained on her.
A spear of ice pierced Rhys from the top of his head to the soles of his feet.
Hastily retreating a few steps back, he felt his back collide roughly against the pedestal of the Greek titan Atlas. Looming overhead, the statue was hoisting a massive sphere meant to represent Earth.
“Don’t let them see you,” he hissed, snatching Dumpy from midair. Sweat was adhering his dress shirt to his skin. He leaned slightly forward, ignoring the simulated heavy breathing from the robot’s voice modulator. “Let me see what you see. Enhance.”
Much like a video recorder, Dumpy was recording the situation live. The zoom function allowed Rhys to see a close-up of the two armed assailants who had trodden forth. They’d worn nondescript clothing meant to blend in and catch their target off-guard. If it hadn’t been for their faces, he wouldn’t have been able to ascertain the gender from just their builds alone.
Rhys wasn’t much of an expert on firearms—his knowledge of guns was limited to movies and video games—but the make and model appeared vintage, likely contraband. Guns made on Earth were considered outdated and weak compared to the advanced arms mass-produced by megacorporations today.
Rhys was too far to hear the quieter words being exchanged, but the volume of the shouting was clearly agitated. They were yelling at her to drop her gun and to kick it away.
This did not seem like a drill.
Only the three individuals were found up ahead. With no one else emerging from the sliding doors, it seemed the building had gone under lockdown. Security cameras were pointed down at the scene.
The inactivity was making him restless. “What’s taking so long?” he demanded. “Why isn’t anyone doing anything?”
“It is likely the result of the bystander effect and other causes,” Dumpy commented in its deep, measured intonation. “Do you want me to call the authorities? It is prudent to reduce fatal casualties.”
The robot’s unaffected droning had managed to steady his nerves somewhat, helping him regain a semblance of self-control. Rhys worried his lower lip.
The sun was slowly falling below the horizon, and darkness threatened to swallow the world.
Waiting for the police to arrive might be a risk that he wasn’t certain the lady could afford to have. On the other hand, he would likely be gunned down the instant that he called attention to himself; running was not ideal.
He had to create a distraction.
“No.” Rhys sank down into a crouch. His hands were trembling. “We’re going to do one better.”
Managing to enter the correct numeric sequence into the holographic lock, he snapped the briefcase open and disengaged the laptop from Sleep mode. His fingers fumbled across the keyboard, entering the lengthy password.
Forcing his fear back, he whispered, “I’m going to disable the lights. It’ll give you a narrow window before the backup generator starts. I’ll need you to activate your defense matrix and take out those two guys. Don’t overdo the voltage.” He glanced up. “Do you think we can pull that off?”
Processing the command, Dumpy calculated the plan’s estimated percentage of success aloud. It also warned that what Rhys was doing was illegal.
“Well, we’re going to try.” Every movement was essentially muscle memory, like a choreographed dance. Brown eyes darted across the screen. “Good thing I still have remote access to the server. This is child’s play. ...Sorry, buddy. You’re gonna be the hero. I believe in you.”
The sun had set completely, with only the artificial lights illuminating the compound. Switching off the electricity supply a few precious minutes later, they were plunged into absolute darkness.
For a few seconds, he could make out nothing but dark lumps—silhouettes who were startled by the abrupt power outage. There was not much time. Motioning rapidly, Rhys hissed under his breath, “Go, go, go!”
He was crossing his fingers.
For a moment, the shape of Dumpy could be seen hovering over one of the men.
There was an unnatural humming, before white-blue light abruptly burst into vision, temporarily igniting the night. The man’s limbs were flailing as though a live wire had been attached to each of his nerves, his body convulsing like a rag doll as the violent electrical current pulsed through him. Not a moment too soon, the tased man collapsed, paralyzed, and his partner shouted his name.
Like machine fire, shots were unloaded blindly at the crackling light. They sounded like fireworks going off, with missed bullets shaking the entire building structure.
Despite Dumpy’s best attempts at evasion—dodging, flying like an erratic pendulum—sparks could be seen when bullets struck sheet metal.
Rhys’ heart plummeted. To his horror, even with the bulletproof design, the robot was soon spiraling out of control. Crashing into the ground like a small meteor, upon impact its emotionless “ow, ow, ow” distorted in volume, becoming an unintelligible screech.
“Nooo! Dumpy!”
“Atlas will never fall!” The voice was female and vaguely familiar; it had come slicing through the shadows as sharp as a knife.
In the distraction, semi-translucent wings, reminding Rhys of crackling electricity, unfurled from the lithe woman’s back like a butterfly from a cocoon. Half of her body was glowing, where the Siren birthmarks were.
It was over in a second.
By the time the man whirled on his feet, a dime-sized hole had been left between his eyes, revealing liquefied brain matter. The woman could be seen standing upright, the barrel of her customized pearlescent revolver smoking slightly from the discharged elemental round. Her finger only left the trigger when the assailant fell.
Nobody in this place moved a muscle, and it was so quiet that even the sound of their breathing could be heard.

21/01/20 Visitors in Vancouver
On 16th Jan we had a super early start, Sam driving 2h30 over the saddle road back to Kona. It all took longer than we'd hoped, so were rushing manically to fill up with fuel and wash all the ash of the white white car. Luckily the hire car company was efficient and everything went smoothly so we had plenty of time in the airport to eat breakfast and chill out before our flight. Another silly short flight back across to Honolulu, then several hours hanging out in the airport there, eating apple pie and watching our flight out get later and later. Around 4:30pm we finally took off, had a fairly unpleasant flight for no particular reason. Sam bought a meal deal but Joey woke up 2 minutes too late to ask for anything and was sad about it. We sat next to a friendly Canadian woman who talked a lot about Harry and Meghan. Finally landed in Vancouver, got our bags and ran to the skytrain platform, arriving 2 minutes after the last train of the night had left for the city. Went back to the terminal and got a taxi up to North Vancouver, and around 1:30am were welcomed in to a gorgeous house by lovely Jane and her lovely Labrador Maverick.
Jane, Iain, Hannah and Lucas live in a lovely house in the super smart Edgemont village area. They've spent the last 2 years renovating and the house looks unrecognisable from the "before” photos. They're planning to put it on the market in a few months time, and we learned a lot about the scary house prices and even scarier realtor fees in the area. When we arrived there was snow on the ground, which is surprisingly unusual for Vancouver, and the rest of Canada seems to find this hilarious. The snow had however given way to rain, so much of our stay involved finding indoorsy things to do to hide from the weather.
On Friday (17th) we had a super lazy morning, massively relishing in all the things a lovely family home has to offer, like a bed and a shower and stocked cupboards. We were completely spoiled with food and taxi services and laundry services and dog cuddles and budgie watching, which made it quite tricky to ever want to go out and do anything else. Around lunchtime Iain drove us to the Pemberton neighbourhood to check out a few ski shops - we have worked out the ski rental costs for the Canada leg of our trip will definitely be more than just buying some - but unfortunately at this point in the season there aren't a whole bunch of second hand skis around in the shops. We checked out a variety of last season's skis on offer, and had some useful chats with shop staff to narrow down what we're looking for. Empty handed, we went home for lunch and then in the afternoon Helen and her lovely Boxer came over for a natter. Later in the evening Jane, Hannah, Lucas, Sam and Joey went to the Red Lion pub for dinner and live jazz, all very delightful. Hannah and Lucas are going to Japan in a few months so we showered them with recommendations.
The next morning Jane drove us down to another ski shop and Joey very excitedly bought a pair of Salomon QSD Lumen skis. They'll fit the bindings and boots to them in the store so can't take them home yet, but was very exciting! Also we suspect we may have got a fairly fat discount because the guy in the shop told us one price but when he rang them up it was $100 higher, he just looked a bit awkward and overtyped the price. Win. With a bit of time to kill, the three of us wandered round Lonsdale Quay Market, and bought and ate a divine loaf of hot apricot bread which had been pulled out of the oven moments before. We went to Helen's apartment to play with the dog and chat to the humans, and Helen very kindly gave us free tickets to the Vancouver Lookout and the Aquarium, and put us on the guest list for Capilano Bridge. What a hero. After a good catch up and lots of ski and travel chat, we wandered back to Lonsdale Quay, hoping to go ice skating but the rink was closed. We had pints of locally brewed beer at the Tap and Barrel, and then back to the covered market for lunch. Caught a bus home, then fairly quickly headed out again to Vancouver Downtown (crossing the Iron Gate bridge on our bus). We visited a few more ski shops, one of which had a promising array of used skis but on closer inspection were pretty battered. Struggling a little bit as there are loads of skis that are not what Sam wants, and ones the right size and shape are all super pricey. No time to feel disheartened, we made our way to Rogers Arena for a Vancouver Canucks ice hockey game. They were celebrating Chinese New Year, and we were given free wontons and pork buns which Sam ate, also accidentally eating the paper the pork bun was wrapped in. We got red lucky envelopes with Canucks badges in, and bought a bucket of endless popcorn. This needed filling after the first 20 minutes, then we slowed down significantly as unlimited popcorn needs to be balanced with unlimited drinks which we did not have. The game itself was exciting, Canucks won conclusively 4:1, and we were entertained by the difference in reaction between Canucks scoring and San Jose Sharks scoring. There were a couple of fights and a huge number of snapped hockey sticks, which players left on the ice when they subbed out. The atmosphere was great, and in contrast to watching sport in the UK there was not a single moment where there wasn't something to watch. Every small pause in the game was filled with music, entertainers, kiss-cam, dance-cam, singalongs or chanting, and a few times it was hard to even notice that the game had restarted. In one of the breaks they threw/cannoned t-shirts out to the crowd and Sam caught one! v exciting. Buzzing, we caught the bus home. We're starting to get used to the persistent herbal smell downtown - weed is legal here and it's clearly popular.
On Sunday we had another luxurious lie-in, then caught the bus to downtown and went up the Lookout tower. Great views (and good timing, because for much of our stay the tower has been in the cloud). From this point in the city centre you can see the three local ski mountains - Seymour, Grouse, and Cypress. Lucky locals. We caught the bus down to Granville Island area, popping to a few more ski shops (with no luck) before browsing the shops and galleries on the artsy island. We went in a photography gallery with a small simple cartoon V sketch of a bird, selling for several hundred dollars. Had lunch in the indoor food market, chatting to a friendly Australian couple sharing our table. Headed home, then out to Park Royal area in West Van for happy hour and dinner with Jane's friend who is super lovely. It stopped raining briefly so we went for a walk along the seafront, great views over to the lights of the city, but no otters or sealions sadly.
Monday was a busy day, Jane drove us down to Lonsdale Quay via the ski shop to drop off one of Joey's boots. We caught the sea bus across the Burrard Inlet to Waterside, then went for a rainy wander through Gastown, the trendy downtown area packed with old buildings, brewery pubs, and a steam driven clock. We hid from the rain in a souvenir store, contemplating buying more clothes as we've heard they've had temperatures down to -30deg up in Whistler in the last week or so. Didn't though, hopefully it'll be warmer when we're there. Bus to Stanley park, a huge and wonderfully wild park with impressive colourful wood carved totem poles and fluffy black squirrels. Visited the aquarium, where everything seemed to be supersized - giant Steller's sealions, playful sea otters, and plenty of other wriggly things. Inevitably time made fools of us, but we managed to cram in a Flyover Canada experience - a simulator which takes you through a 3d movie of Canada's landscapes, complete with smells and mist. Joey thought it was weird that they made it smell like whiskey at the beginning, but then realised that might have been the couple sitting next to her. We caught the bus back to Edgemont and bought some food as we'd offered to cook for everyone as it's our last night. Dropped food off at home and power walked up to the Capilano Suspension Bridge. Helen had put us on the guest list but we hadn't really got an appreciation of the scale of it and we definitely had not left enough time. The park is in a beautiful fir forest dissected by the huge rocky canyon with the Capilano river at the bottom. The suspension bridge over the river has long been a tourist attraction, and the surrounding park has wooden walkways including a network of bridges up in the forest canopy, and a dramatic cliffside walk. Every inch of it has been covered in fairy lights and gorgeous illuminations, which is why we came after dark, and the whole effect is awesome. Sam remembered coming here before, but in the daytime in summer it all looked fairly different. We rushed round soaking it all in, then headed home to cook. Dinner went down well, and Jane had made a delish strawberry cheesecake to polish it off.
Tuesday the 21st we caught the sea bus and sky train to the airport then had a medium sized faff with getting a car with winter tyres, despite that being what we booked months ago. Sorted it in the end, paying a bit extra (but not as much as it should have been) to upgrade to a 4x4 which will help us on the mountain roads and also to fit skis in the back. Then we drove out to East Vancouver to meet a guy selling some Sam-appropriate skis on Craigslist. This went exceptionally well, not only did he take an offer on the skis but he also had a giant (Sam head size) helmet and two pairs of poles, so in one swoop we went from having a hefty shopping list to being ready to hit the slopes in the morning. Iain no longer skis so has kindly bequeathed his helmet to Joey. We drove back to the house and loaded up the car (Jane had collected Joey's skis from the shop). Had to google how to open the car boot as it has a secret button hidden in the rear light. Said our thankyous and goodbyes then drove up to Whistler, stopping at Squamish on the way to stock up on food. Arrived at the Whistler Lodge Hostel before it got particularly dark, and immediately settled in playing pool and chatting to skiers from all over.

Viking to Launch Expedition Cruises in Great Lakes, Arctic
Tumblr media
Viking has announced plans to launch a new expedition product, called Viking Expeditions. In addition to itineraries in Antarctica in the Arctic, the brand will also sail the Great Lakes, as the two new ships planned will be built small enough to navigate the Welland Canal Locks.  Plans call for the plans to launch with its first ship, the Viking Octantis, in January 2022, sailing voyages to Antarctica and the Great Lakes. A second expedition vessel, Viking Polaris, will debut in August 2022, sailing to Antarctica and the Arctic. As part of an exclusive preview, past Viking guests have been able to book select Viking Expeditions polar itineraries since October 9. Now, all expedition voyages—including the new Great Lakes itineraries—are available to the public for booking.  To develop the new expedition voyages, Viking teamed up with scientific institutions including the University of Cambridge’s Scott Polar Research Institute, its lead partner. This relationship is underpinned by a major Viking endowment for scientific research into the polar regions, The Viking Chair of Polar Marine Geoscience, a Cambridge University full professorship based at the Scott Polar Research Institute, as well as a sponsorship fund supporting the Institute’s graduate students. As part of this endowment, the Institute’s scientists will undertake fieldwork on board Viking’s expedition vessels and join voyages to share their expertise with guests. Viking has also partnered with The Cornell Lab of Ornithology, a globally recognized bird research facility, whose ornithologists will regularly be on board the expedition ships, providing guest advice and interaction. Additionally, Viking has partnered with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), whose scientists will join expeditions in the Great Lakes to conduct research focused on changes in the region’s weather, climate and ecosystems. NOAA scientists may also offer lectures about the Great Lakes’ unique environment to Viking guests during these voyages.

Each ship's Owner's Suite will have a private garden with a traditional Norwegian badestamp (wood-sided hot tub) and outdoor dining table.
The New Expedition Ships
The two new expedition ships are currently under construction and will be delivered in Norway by Fincantieri’s VARD. They will be Polar Class 6-rated, and they will each have a capacity of 378 guests in 189 staterooms. Designed by the same nautical architects and engineers behind Viking’s ocean ships, the new vessels will be built small enough to navigate remote polar regions and the St. Lawrence River.  Viking said that the ships’ public spaces will be familiar to Viking’s ocean cruise guests,” but “reimagined for expeditions.” The ships will also have new public spaces purpose-built for expedition cruises.  In addition to a Polar Class 6 ice rating, the ships will incorporate straight bows, longer hulls and fin stabilizers for smoother sailing, as well as U-tank stabilizers that Viking said will be able to decrease rolling by up to 50 percent when the ships are stationary.  Highlights of the new ships include: The Hangar: This enclosed, in-ship marina permits the launch of small excursion craft through the ship’s multiple shell doors. An 85-foot slipway allows guests to embark on RIBs from a flat, stable surface inside the ship, shielded from wind and waves. There is also a FerryBox, a set of instruments continuously collecting and displaying data on water quality, oxygen content, plankton composition and more. The Laboratory: Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris, while hosting guests, will also be working research vessels with an onboard team of Viking Resident Scientists working on a variety of studies. Developed in consultation with Cambridge University and Viking’s other academic partners, The Laboratory, at 430 square feet, is designed to support a broad range of research activities and is equipped with wet and dry laboratory facilities, a sample processing area, fume cupboard, freezer and cool storage, comprehensive microscope optics and extensive bench space for analysis-specific instruments. Guests will have supervised access to The Laboratory, which is located in a glass-enclosed mezzanine above The Hangar, to learn from and participate with scientists undertaking primary research. Expedition Equipment: Viking will offer a variety of ways for guests to experience their destination, according to their interests and activity level, at no extra charge. With a program of complimentary experiences, expedition equipment available for guests on Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris will include a fleet of Zodiacs; a fleet of two-seater Arctic-tested kayaks; and two 12-seater convertible RIBs. Each ship will also have two six-guest submarines with revolving seats and 270-degree spherical windows. Guests will also receive a Viking Expedition Kit with items such as boots, binoculars and waterproof pants; each excursion will also carry a full range of Safety Equipment, such as satellite phones, VHF radios, ropes, life jackets and a comprehensive shore survival kit; and all guests will receive complimentary use of Viking Excursion Gear, which includes specialty items like trekking poles, snowshoes and skis. The Aula & Finse Terrace: A venue for learning at sea, The Aula will be a panoramic auditorium at the stern. Inspired by the University of Oslo’s famed ceremonial hall where the Nobel Peace Prize was historically awarded, The Aula will serve as a venue for lectures and entertainment, with floor-to-ceiling windows and 270-degree views. Adjacent to The Aula through sliding glass walls is the Finse Terrace, an outdoor lounge area with comfortable couches and warming lava rock “firepits” whre guests can take in panoramic views of the surroundings. Together the two spaces can be combined to create an indoor-outdoor al fresco experience. Nordic Balcony: All staterooms onboard Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris will have a Nordic Balcony, a sunroom that converts into an al fresco viewing platform. The balconies will have floor-to-ceiling, distortion-free glass windows at the very edge of the ship, the top of which will lower to transform the stateroom into a sheltered lookout, with an observation shelf at elbow level to stabilize binoculars or a camera. Guests can choose from six stateroom categories that range from 222 square feet to 1,223 square feet: Nordic Balcony, Deluxe Nordic Balcony, Nordic Penthouse, Nordic Junior Suite, Explorer Suite and Owner’s Suite. All staterooms have a Nordic Balcony, as well as a king-size bed and large bathroom with spacious glass-enclosed shower, heated bathroom floor and anti-fog mirror. Every stateroom is also equipped with a floor-to-ceiling drying closet that circulates warm air to dry and store clothing and expedition gear. Expedition Ship Suites: Nordic Junior Suites (322 square feet) and Explorer Suites (580 square feet) on Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris will aim to be comparable to those on Viking’s fleet of ocean ships, with wood detailing and amenities that include additional storage and seating, an expanded bathroom with extended shower and double sinks, welcome champagne, a fully stocked mini-bar replenished daily, complimentary laundry and shoeshine services, priority restaurant reservations and more. Explorer Suites have two separate rooms, a Nordic Balcony and a full outdoor veranda. Additionally, each ship has one Owner’s Suite, which at 1,223 square feet, is twice the size of the Explorer Suites. With the most exclusive accommodations and amenities on board, it has two separate rooms—a living room with a six-seat dining table and a bedroom – as well as a 792-square-foot private garden with a traditional Norwegian badestamp (wood-sided hot tub) and outdoor dining table. Aquavit Terrace & Pools: Located at the stern and with a retractable glass dome, this indoor-outdoor heated sanctuary will have three different temperature-controlled pools, including an “inside-out” swimming experience. The Nordic Spa & Fitness Center: In keeping with Viking’s Nordic heritage, The Nordic Spa onboard is designed with the holistic wellness philosophy of Scandinavia in mind—with a thermal suite that has a Sauna, Snow Grotto and chaise lounges, as well as a warm hydrotherapy pool and badestamp (hot tub), surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows. It will also have a fitness center. Explorers’ Lounge: Similar to Viking’s ocean ships, Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris have a two-deck Explorers’ Lounge at the bow of the ship for taking in the scenery through double-height windows over a mug of mulled wine or glass of Norwegian aquavit. Dining Choices: Viking’s expedition ships will offer an array of dining options that build on the venues from Viking’s ocean ships, but which have been redesigned for expeditions. The Restaurant will offer fine dining serving regional cuisine and always-available classics; the casual World Café will be a new “market” concept that offers live cooking, an open kitchen, bakery, grill and premium seafood and sushi choices, as well as a range of international flavors; Mamsen’s, named for “Mamsen,” the Hagen family matriarch, will serve Scandinavian-inspired fare; Manfredi’s will offer Italian cuisine; and 24-hour room service will be complimentary for all guests. Enrichment Onboard and On Shore: Viking’s exclusive partnerships with the Scott Polar Research Institute at Cambridge University and The Cornell Lab of Ornithology will match researchers and educators with each expedition. The onboard expedition program is designed to prepare guests for their onshore experiences, with more than 25 experts accompanying each journey—the Viking Expedition Team (expedition leader and staff, photographer and submarine pilots) and Viking Resident Scientists (biologists, botanists, geologists, glaciologists, oceanographers, ornithologists, polar experts and researchers). Onboard, guests will enjoy daily briefings and lectures about their destination—and engage with working scientists from renowned academic institutions in The Laboratory or participate directly in citizen science programs. On shore, guests can assist in fieldwork or interact through experiential activities during landings—such as monitoring birds to help identify migratory patterns; accompanying scientists to collect samples; or taking their cameras ashore alongside a professional photographer to learn how best to capture scenic landscapes. Sustainable Features: Compliant to all guidelines and regulatory requirements from AECO, IAATO, the Antarctic Treaty System and the Governor of Svalbard, Viking’s expedition ships minimize environmental impact and meet the most stringent emissions and biosecurity standards, the cruise line said. Additionally, the straight bow reduces fuel consumption, and a dynamic positioning system enables the ship to hover over the seabed without anchoring, allowing access to pristine environments without damage. Fare Inclusions: Every Viking Expeditions cruise fare includes a Nordic Balcony stateroom or suite, virtually all shore excursions, all onboard meals, and all port charges and government taxes. Just as with Viking’s ocean cruises, guests will also enjoy many complimentary amenities as part of their fare, including beer and wine with lunch and dinner service; premium dining reservations; lectures; Wi-Fi; self-service laundry; access to The Nordic Spa; and 24-hour room service. As part of their fare, Viking Expeditions guests will also receive charter flights for hard-to-reach locales and the use of Viking Expedition Gear specialty equipment for land and sea excursions. On polar itineraries, guests also receive their own Viking Expedition Kit, which includes everything needed to be comfortable—as well as a Viking Expeditions Jacket to keep.

Things to see and do in Kenya
Climb Mount Kenya At 4,986m (16,358ft) above sea level, this extinct volcano is the second-highest mountain in Africa. The Mountain Club of Kenya runs mountain huts and publishes guides for climbers. Even if you don't climb to the upper slopes, it is worth spending time on the forested lower slopes below the ice-capped peak, where interesting wildlife abounds. Climb Mount Longonot This distinctive volcano, which last erupted in the 1860s, rises dramatically above the Rift Valley floor, and its slopes can be ascended in around 90 minutes. Allow another hour for the descent, and 3-4 hours if you want to walk around the rim of the perfect volcanic crater. Day trip to Nairobi National Park Nairobi National Park, only 8km (5 miles) from the city centre, is Kenya's oldest national park. Today, it still looks much as it did in the early photographs – wild, undulating pasture – and supports most of East Africa’s best known wildlife, including lion, rhino, giraffe, buffalo and zebra (but not elephant). Experience the magic of the Masai Mara Kenya's most popular game park is named after the Maasai tribe, who migrated south from the Nile Valley in the 17th century. A northern extension to Tanzania’s Serengeti Plains, it is one of the best places in Africa for seeing lion, cheetah and leopard, but is most famous for the annual wildebeest migration and dramatic crossing of the crocodile-infested Mara River. Explore Kenya’s coral coast Visitors can choose between scuba-diving, snorkelling, sailing, water-skiing, swimming or surfing along Kenya's coral coast. The most popular resorts near Mombasa include Bamburi, Kikambala, Kilifi, Malindi, Nyali and the 10km- (6-mile) long, dazzlingly white Diani Beach. Another good base for watersports is the Rift Valley lake of Naivasha, about 1.5 hours drive from Nairobi. Explore Lamu Town Set on a picturesque offshore island close to the Somali border, Lamu is a charming old Swahili city and UNESCO World Heritage Site with many historic mosques and fine old Arab houses replete with impressive carved wooden doors. Highlights of the town include the Lamu Museum, the Swahili House Museum and the Fortress. Go twitching in Kakamega Forest The only rainforest in Kenya, this lovely spot near the Ugandan border is arguably the prime birdwatching site in the country, thanks to the presence of several dozen forest species found nowhere else in the country. For non-birders, the shady forest paths and plentiful monkeys still offer lots of charm. Go wild at Lake Nakuru National Park Boasting a dramatic setting in the Rift Valley, this park is dominated by a lake whose edges are frequently home to hundreds of thousands of pink flamingos. It is also one of Kenya's best rhino sanctuaries, supporting high concentrations of both black and white rhino, and you may spot a leopard in the giant yellowwood acacia trees. Help save the elephants at Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage Watch baby elephants play at the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, an important sanctuary where orphaned elephants are hand-reared before being released back into the wild. Bordering Nairobi National Park, the sanctuary is also home to several orphaned rhinos, and is an important player in the fight against poaching. Jump aboard a dhow Spend an evening afloat on a romantic dhow (traditional Arab sailing boat), feasting on delicious seafood and watching the moon rise over Mombasa's old harbour. Lunchtime or dinner cruises are available on these beautiful floating restaurants, and some even have space for dancing on the deck. Marvel at Mombasa Enjoy this coastal city's Swahili flavour in the Old Town, with its narrow, crowded streets; watch the sailing dhows in the Old Harbour and catch the sound and light show at Fort Jesus, which was built by the Portuguese in the 17th century and is now a museum. Pay a visit to Laikipia Plateau Discover a recent conservation success where former farmland has been opened up as game sanctuaries and stocked with big game including the Big Five: elephant, buffalo, lion, rhino and leopard. The old farmsteads here have been converted into delightful, luxurious accommodations. This vast wilderness area remains largely underexplored by tourists. Quaff high tea at Elsamere Situated on the shores of Lake Naivasha, the former home of Joy Adamson (of Born Free fame) is now a museum and conservation research centre. Set in grounds teeming with birds – and home to a group of handsome colobus monkeys – Elsamere also serves excellent high tea. Shop until you drop in Mombasa Biashara Street is a great place to buy traditional kikoy and khanga clothing. Makupa Market, off Mwembe Tayari, is the main city market. Serious souvenir shoppers should also head for the Bombolulu Workshops and Cultural Village, where disabled men and women produce high-quality leatherwork, jewellery and other crafts. Stay a night at Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary Situated a short distance from the main highway between Nairobi and Mombasa, this small private sanctuary bordering the vast Tsavo National Park doubles as a luxury hotel and well-positioned hide, overlooking a salt lick and a waterhole that frequently attracts aggregations of a hundred or more elephants. Step into the land of giants at Amboseli National Park The 392sq km (151sq mile) Amboseli National Park lies at the base of snow-capped Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak. Wildlife includes lion, cheetah, wildebeest, hippo and gazelle, but the park is most famous for the large herds of elephant attracted by the perennial swamps. Bird-watching is popular, and visitors can learn about the local Maasai people through homestead visits. Take the road less travelled to Lake Turkana In the barren northern reaches of Kenya, Lake Turkana is a strange and beautiful oasis, known to locals as the Jade Sea due to its size and striking colour. The lake provides great fishing, while its islands have healthy crocodile and hippo populations. The semi-nomadic Turkana tribe are just as interesting as the lake itself. Take to the skies in a hot air balloon Float over great herds of game in the Masai Mara National Reserve. Hour-long excursions set off at dawn and end with champagne breakfasts. Almost all the lodges in the reserve offer this experience, which gives ballooners the chance to see the wildebeest migration from the air between July and September. Tour Nairobi's museums Browse the ethnographic and archaeological exhibits of the National Museum, which lies within walking distance of the city centre. And then head out to the suburban Karen Blixen Museum, which occupies the farmhouse made famous by the nominal author's book, Out of Africa. The Nairobi Railway Museum also covers an important chapter of the city’s history. Phuket is a confluence of different hues of blues and greens. Thailand’s largest island is where endless seas meet the skies to make some of the most awe-inspiring sights you’ll ever see.
You’re planning your next trip to Thailand, it will be safe to assume that beach-hopping in Phuket is a big part of your itinerary. If not, we’re sure this article will change your mind. Pristine stretches of white sand, spectacular sunsets and luminous shades of water will make your trip to Phuket worthwhile. Here are some of the must-visit beaches in Phuket. We've also listed some beaches that can be avoided for various reasons including accessibility and views.
Must-Visit Beaches
1. PATONG BEACH One can say that Patong is the most popular beach in Phuket. It is mostly known for its lively partying scene because of the scores of bars, restaurants and clubs located here. However, it is also ideal for someone looking for watersports, ranging from cable skiing, parasailing, and boat rides. Patong is also the most popular shopping destination due to its many fresh markets, night markets, and Jungceylon, Phuket’s largest shopping mall. If you’re spending multiple nights in Phuket, we’d suggest staying here to get the quintessentially happening Phuket city experience. You can choose from the quiet South and North Patong hotels, if you want a bit of solitude.

2. KATA BEACH Kata is one of the most beautiful beaches in Phuket. Its pristine white sands, tropical trees and clear waters will make you believe that you’re living inside of a computer wallpaper! Kata is divided into two areas- Kata centre, which is close to the Karon beach and Kata south, which houses several resorts. Apart from frolicking on the beach, surfing or sunbathing, you can also enjoy shopping at Kata’s many beach shops, where you will find everything from souvenirs to clothes and cosmetics. The beach also has many food stalls and restaurants if you want a refreshing meal after your beach time. For easy accessibility to this beach, it’s best to stay at a beach resort since it can be a bit tedious to reach here from the city.

3. KARON BEACH Karon is only a short walk away from Kata beach, and is one of the longest beaches in Phuket. Despite being near the lively Kata, Karon beach does not attract a lot of crowd, which is why one can have a soulful beach experience here. It is also a popular destination for leisurely walks, since this beach is more sandy than rocky. Apart from lounging and walking, Karon has some good snorkelling spots and more room for jet skiing, parasailing, banana rides and other water sports due to lesser crowds, especially at the south end of the beach. Although there are some good restaurants nearby, one can always walk over to Kata beach for more variety. If you're someone who enjoys quiet beaches, this is a great choice for accommodation.

4. BANGTAO BEACH Bangtao beach is one of Phuket& most underrated beaches. It has a large coast and is fairly quiet. It also offers a lot of variety for restaurants, luxury hotels and spas. We think this beach is one of the best places to stay, due to its accessible location, views and serenity. Do check out the Banyan Tree Resort or Dusit Thani Laguna Pool Villa for the luxe hotel experience, with amazing rooms, spas and food. Now, although it is a great destination for beach walks and sunbathing, watersports, especially surfing isn’t the best idea here due to the unpredictable nature of the waves. So, if you want to Venture out at the sea, it would be wise to consult the hotel or beach authorities to check for safety.

5. MAI KHAO BEACH Mai Khao is the longest and among the most secluded beaches in Phuket. This beach has some amazing views with its deep blue waters and vast stretches of the white, sandy coast. Plus, with Phuket airport being nearby, one can also witness the awe-inspiring sight of planes landing in the backdrop of a gorgeous beach. Another fun activity to do here is to experience the baby turtle release during the Songkran festival in April every year. You can also sponsor a turtle and carry it to its destination in the sea! If you want to get away from the city on one or two nights during your Phuket trip, we highly recommend Mai Khao beach.

6. SURIN BEACH Surin is one of the most picturesque beaches of Phuket. It has a good balance of activities and solitude, and is a popular haunt for celebrities and families. It is also a great location for swimming. However, during monsoon, the rains can create dangerous undertow conditions so it’s best to take necessary precautions. You will also find a lot of luxury resorts here. However, if you want to stay somewhere quieter, Bangtao beach is a short cab ride away from Surin and would be the more suitable destination.

least popular beaches
Although, most beaches in Phuket are enjoyable and picturesque, you might want to consider venturing more on the west coast than the east coast. This is because the beaches on the west coast have a mountainous terrain in the backdrop, hence offering more spectacular views than the ones on the east coast which are flat. Chalong, Cape Panwa, Koh Siray, Ao Po are some beaches on the east coast that can be avoided if what you’re looking for is the lively, Thailand life. These beaches are more suited for tranquil activities like swimming and meditation. Since the main Thai community resides here, this can also be an option for a more local culture-driven vacation.

dubai educational tour operators  Dubai Educational Tour Operators We Are Dubai Educational Tour Operators : Expertise in Student trip to Dubai And Educational tour operator ,dubai educational group tour operators. School topur operators , college tour operators . The exotic and affluent city is defined by luxury and style but there’s also a cultural and adventurous side. Emerging from the sands of the Arabian Desert and flourishing into one of the most modern and dynamic cities in the world, Dubai has all the ingredients I look for in a holiday. It’s got the heat, the sunshine, the gorgeous hotels, endless dining options, great nightlife, beautiful markets, adventurous activities, stunning views and great shopping. Dubai is a city in the United Arab Emirates that has become a playground for the world’s rich and famous. It’s a city of superlatives, with the world’s tallest building, the world’s only 7-star hotel and is working on the world’s largest airport. Dubai’s airline, Emirates is fast becoming a leader in long-haul flights, and offers direct service from Dubai to cities all over the world. Citizens from most English-speaking countries (US, UK, Australia, New Zeland, Canada, etc) can obtain a 30-day visitor’s visa upon entry, making the logistics of visiting Dubai a breeze. 5 THINGS MUST KNOW ABOUT DUBAI 1: BURJ KHALIFA The Burj Khalifa is the tallest building in the world, topping out at 160 stories! This multi-use building opened in 2010 in a government attempt to diversify from the oil industry and put Dubai on the map internationally. The Armani hotel occupies 15 of the lower floors, sky lobbies with swimming pools on floors 43 and 76, plus 900 residential apartment homes occupying up to the 108th floor. There is also an outdoor observation deck on the 124th floor. Tickets to the observation deck can be purchased in advance, and  buying them in person. At the base of Burj Khalifa is the Dubai Fountain, which is the largest choreographed fountain in the world. The 30-acre lake is illuminated by over 6,000 lights and 50 color projectors, with musical accompaniment. Light and music shows occur twice in the daytime and every 30 minutes in the evening, so you’ll have a good chance of catching a light show at the Dubai Fountain. A true symbol of Dubai’s wondrous modern architecture, the Burj Khalifa is the world’s tallest building and a globally iconic structure. There are two observation decks to peer out from, found on level 124 and 148, the latter sitting at 1,821 feet and providing incredible panoramic views. 2 : BURJ AL ARAB The Burj Al Arab is an ultra-luxury hotel set on an island in Dubai, connected to the mainland by a private bridge. The sail-shaped building is easily recognizable and it is the third tallest hotel in the world. Claiming to be a seven-star hotel, one night at the Burj Al Arab will run you nearly $2000 USD. Not feeling up to that bill? You can visit the Burj Al Arab with a dining reservation at any one of the many restaurants on the property. Of course, dining here is not for the budget-minded, either, but afternoon tea is the least expensive option, at around $150 USD per person. 3 : JUMEIRAH BEACH In the shadow of Burj Al Arab is Jumeirah Beach, a white sand beach on the coast of the Persian Gulf. The beach is lined with hotels and resorts, and if you are not staying along the beach, you will need to seek out the public section of the beach for access. There is no public access between Burj Al Arab and the Palm. 4 : PALM JUMEIRAH The Palm Jumeirah is a man-made series of islands, created in the shape of a palm tree. The building of these islands caused much fan-fare and indeed makes for an interesting aerial view. Within the Palm, you’ll find upscale apartments and hotels, restaurants and shopping. In the evening, beach clubs transform into a party scenewith live DJ’s. One popular resort at the Palm is Atlantis, a 5-star hotel featuring a waterpark and aquarium. 5 : MALL OF THE EMIRATES While Mall of the Emirates won’t win any size awards, it is allegedly the world’s first shopping resort, and still a very large mall, although dwarfed by the Dubai Mall. There are over 500 shops, 90 restaurants, and a 5-star hotel. Perhaps the best-known attraction of the Mall of the Emirates is Ski Dubai, an indoor ski resort in the desert. With an 85-meter mountain, Ski Dubai boasts of the world’s first indoor black diamond ski run. In total, 5 slopes offer a variety of skill levels for all visitors, and you might even see the resident penguins out for a stroll. Entrance to Ski Dubai is not terribly expensive, and includes winter clothing plus your ski equipment. After all, who wants to bring a parka to Dubai?
