I love that since Nintendo got rare to work on the donkey kong franchise you got this weirdass corner of the Mario universe that was handled by a bunch of British people dicking around 30 years ago and while, especially after the buyout, they’ve distanced themselves from Conker and all that, they can never truly escape it. DK is one of the big characters, and it’s been partially defined by Rare. As long as elements like that hairdo and his good pal Diddy are still a thing, rare’s influence can’t go away. No matter how much they try sweeping it under the rug, every time cranky appears, I think deep down inside that the original donkey kong, one of the original gaming villains, is reduced to a grumpy old man in modern media. And I love it.
Even if you don’t consider banjo and conker canon, donkey kong still is, which means that somewhere deep in the Mario universe, this thing exists. This pig with nipple piercings lives in the same universe as Yoshi.
Tumblr media
I HAD A REVELATION
conker the red squirrel is an anthropomorphic red squirrel made by rareware and is the protagonist of the game conker's bad fur day for the n64, rated t for teen and is the only n64 game rated t for its crudity, having the first scene be conker getting drunk. however, conker was a playable character in diddy kong racing before bad fur day was even thought of. this means that conker is a part of the donkey kong canon, and by proxy the mario canon. and since banjo and kazooie have a cameo in bad fur day, they too are part of the mario canon. the foul-mouthed alcoholic greedy squirrel and mario exist in the same timeline

NEW MARIO KART WAVE BABY
I’m so excited for DS Mario Circuit, I think it’s the second best circuit course in the franchise, and the additions (differences in altitude, the forest) make it even cooler to me.
Riverside Park looks like a base game track, it looks so good, and they’ve tweaked some elements of the layout in an interesting way.
Waluigi Stadium also looks great, although I’m disappointment that we got it instead of Wario Colosseum (the best Double Dash track). Still a fun track, but I miss my boy.
DK Summit is cool, not my favorite Wii course, but I’m glad it’s here. I hope the double cut still exists. It’s unlikely, but if the Mushroom Gorge gap is still here, anything’s possible
All of the city tracks are cool, but I think 3 is too much in a wave. Yes all 3 are different aesthetically, but design and variety wise, they’re very similar. This does confirm that there’s at the very least 2 more city tracks in development, if Nintendo keeps the (at least) 2 cities per wave pattern.
And Yoshi’s Island. Oooh baby Yoshi’s Island. Yoshi’s Island is my favorite video game of all time, and I’m so happy it’s getting this tribute here. It looks so good and I love seeing all of the references packed into the track. It’s clear that the team was very passionate about Yoshi and his Island.
All in all, Birdo sweep 2023

Hamlet Mariofied Act 1 Scene 5
Boldened names refer to the Mario characters playing the roles. The character role names remain in the context of the play and its dialogue.
Mario = Hamlet
Donkey Kong = Ghost
Luigi = Horatio
Yoshi = Marcellus
Act I, Scene 5
Elsinore. The Castle. Another part of the fortifications.
Enter Donkey Kong and Mario, set to the level start jingle from the Donkey Kong arcade game.
Mario. Whither wilt thou lead me? Speak! I'll go no further.
DK. Mark me.
Hamlet. I will.
 Donkey Kong. My hour is almost come,
When I to sulph'rous and tormenting flames
Must render up myself.
Mario. Alas, poor ghost!
DK. Pity me not, but lend thy serious hearing
 To what I shall unfold.
Mario. Speak. I am bound to hear.
DK. So art thou to revenge, when thou shalt hear.
Mario. What?
DK. I am thy father's spirit,
 Doom'd for a certain term to walk the night,
And for the day confin'd to fast in fires,
Till the foul crimes done in my days of nature
Are burnt and purg'd away. But that I am forbid
To tell the secrets of my prison house,
 I could a tale unfold whose lightest word
Would harrow up thy soul, freeze thy young blood,
Make thy two eyes, like stars, start from their spheres,
Thy knotted and combined locks to part,
And each particular hair to stand on end
 Like quills upon the fretful porcupine.
But this eternal blazon must not be
To ears of flesh and blood. List, list, O, list!
If thou didst ever thy dear father love-
Mario. O God!
 DK. Revenge his foul and most unnatural murther.
Mario. Murther?
DK. Murther most foul, as in the best it is;
But this most foul, strange, and unnatural.
Mario. Haste me to know't, that I, with wings as swift
 As meditation or the thoughts of love,
May sweep to my revenge.
DK. I find thee apt;
And duller shouldst thou be than the fat weed
That rots itself in ease on Lethe wharf,
 Wouldst thou not stir in this. Now, Hamlet, hear.
'Tis given out that, sleeping in my orchard,
A serpent stung me. So the whole ear of Denmark
Is by a forged process of my death
Rankly abus'd. But know, thou noble youth,
 The serpent that did sting thy father's life
Now wears his crown.
Mario. O my prophetic soul!
My uncle?
DK. Ay, that incestuous, that adulterate beast, (Flashback begins of Donkey Kong and Bowser sitting against the Cheep-chomp fountain in front of the castle)
 With witchcraft of his wit, with traitorous gifts-
O wicked wit and gifts, that have the power
So to seduce!- won to his shameful lust
The will of my most seeming-virtuous queen.
O Hamlet, what a falling-off was there, (Continuing with the flashback, Bowser reaches into his shell and grabs a banana tainted with Bowser Jr’s paint goop, then turns to hand the gift to a hapless Donkey Kong)
  From me, whose love was of that dignity
That it went hand in hand even with the vow
I made to her in marriage, and to decline
Upon a wretch whose natural gifts were poor
To those of mine!
 But virtue, as it never will be mov'd,
Though lewdness court it in a shape of heaven,
So lust, though to a radiant angel link'd,
Will sate itself in a celestial bed
And prey on garbage. (As Donkey Kong proceeds to stomach the banana Bowser lent him, a tremor quakes within, causing the then-king to begin exhaling swoopin’ stus and a towering black Polluted Piranha before falling to his death)
 But soft! methinks I scent the morning air.
Brief let me be. Sleeping within my orchard,
My custom always of the afternoon,
Upon my secure hour thy uncle stole,
With juice of cursed hebona in a vial,
 And in the porches of my ears did pour
The leperous distilment; whose effect
Holds such an enmity with blood of man
That swift as quicksilver it courses through
The natural gates and alleys of the body,
 And with a sudden vigour it doth posset
And curd, like eager droppings into milk,
The thin and wholesome blood. So did it mine;
And a most instant tetter bark'd about,
Most lazar-like, with vile and loathsome crust
 All my smooth body.
Thus was I, sleeping, by a brother's hand
Of life, of crown, of queen, at once dispatch'd;
Cut off even in the blossoms of my sin,
Unhous'led, disappointed, unanel'd,
 No reckoning made, but sent to my account (After extinguishing the grime expelled by the now-deceased Donkey Kong, Bowser crouches by the body to appear as though he mourns, thus ending the flashback)
With all my imperfections on my head.
Mario. O, horrible! O, horrible! most horrible!
DK. If thou hast nature in thee, bear it not.
Let not the royal bed of Denmark be
 A couch for luxury and damned incest.
But, howsoever thou pursuest this act,
Taint not thy mind, nor let thy soul contrive
Against thy mother aught. Leave her to heaven,
And to those thorns that in her bosom lodge
 To prick and sting her. Fare thee well at once.
The glowworm shows the matin to be near
And gins to pale his uneffectual fire.
Adieu, adieu, adieu! Remember me. Exit.
Mario. O all you host of heaven! O earth! What else?
 And shall I couple hell? Hold, hold, my heart!
And you, my sinews, grow not instant old,
But bear me stiffly up. Remember thee?
Ay, thou poor ghost, while memory holds a seat
In this distracted globe. Remember thee?
 Yea, from the table of my memory
I'll wipe away all trivial fond records,
All saws of books, all forms, all pressures past
That youth and observation copied there,
And thy commandment all alone shall live
 Within the book and volume of my brain,
Unmix'd with baser matter. Yes, by heaven!
O most pernicious woman!
O villain, villain, smiling, damned villain!
My tables! Meet it is I set it down
 That one may smile, and smile, and be a villain;
At least I am sure it may be so in Denmark. [Writes.]
So, uncle, there you are. Now to my word:
It is 'Adieu, adieu! Remember me.'
I have sworn't.
 Luigi. [within] My lord, my lord!
Enter Luigi and Yoshi.
Yoshi. Lord Hamlet!
Luigi. Heaven secure him!
Mario. So be it!
 Yoshi. Illo, ho, ho, my lord!
Mario. Hillo, ho, ho, boy! Come, bird, come.
Yoshi. How is't, my noble lord?
Luigi. What news, my lord?
Yoshi. O, wonderful!
 Luigi. Good my lord, tell it.
Mario. No, you will reveal it.
Luigi. Not I, my lord, by heaven!
Yoshi. Nor I, my lord.
Mario. How say you then? Would heart of man once think it?
 But you'll be secret?
Yoshi. [with Luigi] Ay, by heaven, my lord.
Mario. There's neer a villain dwelling in all Denmark
But he's an arrant knave.
Luigi. There needs no ghost, my lord, come from the grave
 To tell us this.
Mario. Why, right! You are in the right!
And so, without more circumstance at all,
I hold it fit that we shake hands and part;
You, as your business and desires shall point you,
 For every man hath business and desire,
Such as it is; and for my own poor part,
Look you, I'll go pray.
Luigi. These are but wild and whirling words, my lord.
Mario. I am sorry they offend you, heartily;
  Yes, faith, heartily.
Luigi. There's no offence, my lord.
Mario. Yes, by Saint Patrick, but there is, Horatio,
And much offence too. Touching this vision here,
It is an honest ghost, that let me tell you.
 For your desire to know what is between us,
O'ermaster't as you may. And now, good friends,
As you are friends, scholars, and soldiers,
Give me one poor request.
Luigi. What is't, my lord? We will.
 Mario. Never make known what you have seen to-night.
Yoshi. [with Luigi] My lord, we will not.
Mario. Nay, but swear't.
Luigi. In faith,
My lord, not I.
 Yoshi. Nor I, my lord- in faith.
Mario. Upon my sword.
Yoshi. We have sworn, my lord, already.
Mario. Indeed, upon my sword, indeed.
Donkey Kong cries under the stage.
DK. Swear.
Mario. Aha boy, say'st thou so? Art thou there, truepenny?
Come on! You hear this fellow in the cellarage.
Consent to swear.
Luigi. Propose the oath, my lord.
 Mario. Never to speak of this that you have seen.
Swear by my sword.
DK. [beneath] Swear.
Mario. Hic et ubique? Then we'll shift our ground.
Come hither, gentlemen,
 And lay your hands again upon my sword.
Never to speak of this that you have heard:
Swear by my sword.
DK. [beneath] Swear by his sword.
Mario. Well said, old mole! Canst work i' th' earth so fast?
 A worthy pioner! Once more remove, good friends."
Luigi. O day and night, but this is wondrous strange!
Mario. And therefore as a stranger give it welcome.
There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio,
Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.
 But come!
Here, as before, never, so help you mercy,
How strange or odd soe'er I bear myself
(As I perchance hereafter shall think meet
To put an antic disposition on),
 That you, at such times seeing me, never shall,
With arms encumb'red thus, or this head-shake,
Or by pronouncing of some doubtful phrase,
As 'Well, well, we know,' or 'We could, an if we would,'
Or 'If we list to speak,' or 'There be, an if they might,'
Or such ambiguous giving out, to note
That you know aught of me- this is not to do,
So grace and mercy at your most need help you,
Swear.
DK. [beneath] Swear.
 [They swear.]
Mario. Rest, rest, perturbed spirit! So, gentlemen,
With all my love I do commend me to you;
And what so poor a man as Hamlet is
May do t' express his love and friending to you,
  God willing, shall not lack. Let us go in together;
And still your fingers on your lips, I pray.
The time is out of joint. O cursed spite
That ever I was born to set it right!
Nay, come, let's go together. (Leaps forward and sails into the air as his accomplices take suit, while Donkey Kong watches with anticipation before utterly dissipating)
  Exeunt.

Hamlet Mariofied Act 3 Scene 4
Bolded names refer to the Mario characters playing the roles. The character role names remain the same in the context of the play and its dialogue.
Peach = Gertrude
Kamek = Polonius
Mario = Hamlet
Donkey Kong = Ghost
Act III, Scene 4
The Queen’s closet.
Enter Peach and Kamek Tune of Mushroomy Kingdom.
Kamek. He will come straight. Look you lay home to him.
Tell him his pranks have been too broad to bear with,
And that your Grace hath screen'd and stood between
 Much heat and him. I'll silence me even here.
Pray you be round with him.
Mario. [within] Mother, mother, mother!
Peach. I'll warrant you; fear me not. Withdraw; I hear him coming.
[Kamek hides behind the arras.]
Enter Mario. Play Castle Theme from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island.
Mario. Now, mother, what's the matter?
Peach. Hamlet, thou hast thy father much offended.
Mario. Mother, you have my father much offended.
Peach. Come, come, you answer with an idle tongue.
 Mario. Go, go, you question with a wicked tongue.
Peach. Why, how now, Hamlet?
Mario. What's the matter now?
Peach. Have you forgot me?
Mario. No, by the rood, not so!
  You are the Queen, your husband's brother's wife,
And (would it were not so!) you are my mother.
Peach. Nay, then I'll set those to you that can speak.
Mario. Come, come, and sit you down. You shall not budge;
You go not till I set you up a glass
 Where you may see the inmost part of you.
Peach. What wilt thou do? Thou wilt not murther me?
Help, help, ho!
Kamek. [behind] What, ho! help, help, help!
Mario. [draws] How now? a rat? Dead for a ducat, dead!
 Makes a pass through the arras and kills Kamek.
Kamek. [behind] O, I am slain! Game over music from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island commences as Kamek dies.
Peach. O me, what hast thou done?
Mario. Nay, I know not. Is it the King?
Peach. O, what a rash and bloody deed is this!
 Mario. A bloody deed- almost as bad, good mother,
As kill a king, and marry with his brother.
Peach. As kill a king?
Mario. Ay, lady, it was my word.
Lifts up the arras and sees Kamek. Cue Castle Music from New Super Mario Bros.
 Thou wretched, rash, intruding fool, farewell!
I took thee for thy better. Take thy fortune.
Thou find'st to be too busy is some danger.
Leave wringing of your hands. Peace! sit you down
And let me wring your heart; for so I shall
 If it be made of penetrable stuff;
If damned custom have not braz'd it so
That it is proof and bulwark against sense.
Peach. What have I done that thou dar'st wag thy tongue
In noise so rude against me?
 Mario. Such an act
That blurs the grace and blush of modesty;
Calls virtue hypocrite; takes off the rose
From the fair forehead of an innocent love,
And sets a blister there; makes marriage vows
 As false as dicers' oaths. O, such a deed
As from the body of contraction plucks
The very soul, and sweet religion makes
A rhapsody of words! Heaven's face doth glow;
Yea, this solidity and compound mass,
 With tristful visage, as against the doom,
Is thought-sick at the act.
Peach. Ah me, what act,
That roars so loud and thunders in the index?
Mario. Look here upon th's picture, and on this,
 The counterfeit presentment of two brothers.
See what a grace was seated on this brow;
Hyperion's curls; the front of Jove himself;
An eye like Mars, to threaten and command;
A station like the herald Mercury
 New lighted on a heaven-kissing hill:
A combination and a form indeed
Where every god did seem to set his seal
To give the world assurance of a man.
This was your husband. Look you now what follows.
 Here is your husband, like a mildew'd ear
Blasting his wholesome brother. Have you eyes?
Could you on this fair mountain leave to feed,
And batten on this moor? Ha! have you eyes
You cannot call it love; for at your age
 The heyday in the blood is tame, it's humble,
And waits upon the judgment; and what judgment
Would step from this to this? Sense sure you have,
Else could you not have motion; but sure that sense
Is apoplex'd; for madness would not err,
 Nor sense to ecstacy was ne'er so thrall'd
But it reserv'd some quantity of choice
To serve in such a difference. What devil was't
That thus hath cozen'd you at hoodman-blind?
Eyes without feeling, feeling without sight,
 Ears without hands or eyes, smelling sans all,
Or but a sickly part of one true sense
Could not so mope.
O shame! where is thy blush? Rebellious hell,
If thou canst mutine in a matron's bones,
 To flaming youth let virtue be as wax
And melt in her own fire. Proclaim no shame
When the compulsive ardour gives the charge,
Since frost itself as actively doth burn,
And reason panders will.
 Peach. O Hamlet, speak no more!
Thou turn'st mine eyes into my very soul,
And there I see such black and grained spots
As will not leave their tinct.
Mario. Nay, but to live
  In the rank sweat of an enseamed bed,
Stew'd in corruption, honeying and making love
Over the nasty sty!
Peach. O, speak to me no more!
These words like daggers enter in mine ears.
No more, sweet Hamlet!
Mario. A murtherer and a villain!
A slave that is not twentieth part the tithe
Of your precedent lord; a vice of kings;
A cutpurse of the empire and the rule,
 That from a shelf the precious diadem stole
And put it in his pocket!
Peach. No more!
Enter Donkey Kong in his nightgown. Initiate Gangplank Galleon.
Mario. A king of shreds and patches!-
 Save me and hover o'er me with your wings,
You heavenly guards! What would your gracious figure?
Peach. Alas, he's mad!
Mario. Do you not come your tardy son to chide,
That, laps'd in time and passion, lets go by
 Th' important acting of your dread command?
O, say!
DK. Do not forget. This visitation
Is but to whet thy almost blunted purpose.
But look, amazement on thy mother sits.
 O, step between her and her fighting soul
Conceit in weakest bodies strongest works.
Speak to her, Hamlet.
Mario. How is it with you, lady?
Peach. Alas, how is't with you,
 That you do bend your eye on vacancy,
And with th' encorporal air do hold discourse?
Forth at your eyes your spirits wildly peep;
And, as the sleeping soldiers in th' alarm,
Your bedded hairs, like life in excrements,
 Start up and stand an end. O gentle son,
Upon the heat and flame of thy distemper
Sprinkle cool patience! Whereon do you look?
Mario. On him, on him! Look you how pale he glares!
His form and cause conjoin'd, preaching to stones,
 Would make them capable.- Do not look upon me,
Lest with this piteous action you convert
My stern effects. Then what I have to do
Will want true colour- tears perchance for blood.
Peach. To whom do you speak this?
 Mario. Do you see nothing there?
Peach. Nothing at all; yet all that is I see.
Mario. Nor did you nothing hear?
Peach. No, nothing but ourselves.
Mario. Why, look you there! Look how it steals away!
My father, in his habit as he liv'd!
Look where he goes even now out at the portal!
Exit Donkey Kong. Composition of the boss theme from Super Mario Bros 2.
Peach. This is the very coinage of your brain.
This bodiless creation ecstasy
 Is very cunning in.
Mario. Ecstasy?
My pulse as yours doth temperately keep time
And makes as healthful music. It is not madness
That I have utt'red. Bring me to the test,
 And I the matter will reword; which madness
Would gambol from. Mother, for love of grace,
Lay not that flattering unction to your soul
That not your trespass but my madness speaks.
It will but skin and film the ulcerous place,
 Whiles rank corruption, mining all within,
Infects unseen. Confess yourself to heaven;
Repent what's past; avoid what is to come;
And do not spread the compost on the weeds
To make them ranker. Forgive me this my virtue;
 For in the fatness of these pursy times
Virtue itself of vice must pardon beg-
Yea, curb and woo for leave to do him good.
Peach. O Hamlet, thou hast cleft my heart in twain.
Mario. O, throw away the worser part of it,
 And live the purer with the other half,
Good night- but go not to my uncle's bed.
Assume a virtue, if you have it not.
That monster, custom, who all sense doth eat
Of habits evil, is angel yet in this,
 That to the use of actions fair and good
He likewise gives a frock or livery,
That aptly is put on. Refrain to-night,
And that shall lend a kind of easiness
To the next abstinence; the next more easy;
 For use almost can change the stamp of nature,
And either (master) the devil, or throw him out
With wondrous potency. Once more, good night;
And when you are desirous to be blest,
I'll blessing beg of you.- For this same lord,
 I do repent; but heaven hath pleas'd it so,
To punish me with this, and this with me,
That I must be their scourge and minister.
I will bestow him, and will answer well
The death I gave him. So again, good night.
  I must be cruel, only to be kind;
Thus bad begins, and worse remains behind.
One word more, good lady.
Peach. What shall I do?
Mario. Not this, by no means, that I bid you do:
 Let the bloat King tempt you again to bed;
Pinch wanton on your cheek; call you his mouse;
And let him, for a pair of reechy kisses,
Or paddling in your neck with his damn'd fingers,
Make you to ravel all this matter out,
 That I essentially am not in madness,
But mad in craft. 'Twere good you let him know;
For who that's but a queen, fair, sober, wise,
Would from a paddock, from a bat, a gib
Such dear concernings hide? Who would do so?
 No, in despite of sense and secrecy,
Unpeg the basket on the house's top,
Let the birds fly, and like the famous ape,
To try conclusions, in the basket creep
And break your own neck down.
 Peach. Be thou assur'd, if words be made of breath,
And breath of life, I have no life to breathe
What thou hast said to me.
Mario. I must to England; you know that?
Peach. Alack,
 I had forgot! 'Tis so concluded on.
Mario. There's letters seal'd; and my two schoolfellows,
Whom I will trust as I will adders fang'd,
They bear the mandate; they must sweep my way
And marshal me to knavery. Let it work;
 For 'tis the sport to have the enginer
Hoist with his own petar; and 't shall go hard
But I will delve one yard below their mines
And blow them at the moon. O, 'tis most sweet
When in one line two crafts directly meet.
 This man shall set me packing.
I'll lug the guts into the neighbour room.-
Mother, good night.- Indeed, this counsellor
Is now most still, most secret, and most grave,
Who was in life a foolish peating knave.
 Come, sir, to draw toward an end with you.
Good night, mother.
Exit Peach. Then exit Mario, tugging in
Kamek.
