Finishing Out Summer 2020 TBR List! - Updated 7/31

Starting back in March, I was adding novel after novel for purposes of reading during social distancing and Summer 2020. I’m hoping you all found some great reads, even if you haven’t been able to read them all. *Here is another batch to round out Summer 2020, and I’m thrilled by the selection that includes sapphic, trans MCs, and more eras and locations than any list to date.

Leather and Lace by Rebel Carter (Good Sky series #5) - May 20th - sapphic

Mary Sophia James came to Gold Sky, Montana to find a husband at the insistence of her overbearing mother. Striking out in spectacular fashion after setting her eye on Julian Baptiste, her options are dwindling, and time is running out. MD playthrough again

- oh, so Alice already got rid of Damien by early December. *rereads* ...makes sense, she is the treasurer, and I’m having her court Donald by courting detentions. 

- the detention after exam 3 is way more interesting if you get Ellen along, but the Ellen/Donald interactions are such intense shipping fuel that I prefer not to get that convo in this playthrough. 

- on December 14, Alice got 5 demerits from Grabiner. According to the guide, he only gives 5 demerits if he likes you, otherwise you get 10 demerits. I wonder if it’s because Alice is treasurer that he likes her okay, or if it’s because Alice ‘fessed up to the “Love Letter” thing back in hazing week, or for some other reason. Still interesting to check that detentions don’t take away from that. Not that surprising, given that Grabiner likes Donald as well, but it’s still nice to get another confirmation of that!

- kind of my avowed goal for this playthrough is to fail every possible exam and get into every possible detention (well, except the one you need to be married to Grabiner for - you need way more demerits for that one than Alice has). The idea is that Alice doesn’t test well at all, but as the year goes on she thinks better on her feet and has good instincts when she’s not graded on it. I wanted to see how I feel about it in the context of a Donald romance. I’m on March 12 and so far I really prefer Donald/MC when MC’s a great student - or if there was a way for MC to have school trouble the way Ellen sometimes does, I’d dig that too. Alice is treasurer, but she’s running around with -20 demerits on average from failing all her exams.

- on exam 6, Grabiner literally runs out of detentions to give Alice. Let’s just say that he is as Done with Alice’s detentions as Alice is at being transported in the dungeon alone. Alice doesn’t mind dungeons when there are people with her, as demonstrated by the Donald-Luke-Alice adventure (though seriously even then she’s not the greatest fan of them), but when she’s on her own she hates ‘em.

- in practice Alice is now claustrophobic rather than just “not testing well”!

- then I reap off the benefits of being Treasurer, i.e. reporting the Kyo situation to an adult who’s actually going to ask the victim about what’s going on. W00t. ...of course that’s a little bit meta-gamey in this particular playthrough, because given Alice’s many many demerits, and the fact that the teacher who gives opportunities to earn merits back is Potsdam, I’m noooot entirely sure she wouldn’t go see Potsdam instead. Whatever: Alice is treasurer, she remembers Grabiner telling her he couldn’t find Minnie a few weeks back, so she knows Grabiner is aware something is up with Minnie. And sure, he hates when she fails her exams badly enough that she needs to be rescued out of the dungeons, but he’s also never not helped, not once.

Kyo continues being a chillingly accurate teenage incel

(once again I admire the slyness of the set-up of the Potsdam/Grabiner reactions. Potsdam is the one with the “enthusiastic consent” speech, after all.

Though a lot of it is also on MC’s explanation of the problem - MC is more precise when talking to Grabiner. Which also makes sense, given Potsdam and Grabiner’s teaching styles: MC already knows Grabiner values precision and she’s used to his manners now, acting as treasurer. With Potsdam, it comes as a nasty surprise that suddenly she’s asking for receipts, and so MC is taken aback and doesn’t say things the right way. “Why are you betraying MC, flowery Dumbledore?”)

- the Donald/MC romance remains cute af. I can’t get over how adorably vanilla/sweet/fun/teasing they are.

every single fucking time I am floored by this goddamn dork.

- a fun gameplay thing about Alice is that whenever it’s dramatically appropriate, her stress acts out and she fails her class. Donald accused of setting a fire? Too stressed to focus. Learn there’s a group exam? Too stressed to focus. Virginia sick? Too stressed to focus. Etc etc. It was fun.

- final exam: Alice stands her ground not to tell Virginia whether or not she’s dating Donald, then sides with Virginia on the plan (privately she agrees that Ellen’s right, but she doesn’t want Virginia to think Alice is giving her the cold shoulder or anything), so Ellen goes her own way, and they fail the exam.

It’s the first time I’ve failed the final exam in a non-Damien playthrough, it feels weird and strange.

...and only brings me to -35 demerits, because this is a Donald route and as such I got all the tricks to earn merits back. Aw yeah.

I’m pretty satisfied with what I tried this playthrough, though it’s not my favorite MC to romance Donald. It was fun collecting detentions, checking how to fail exams (Donald really is the comfortable route to juggle demerits without risking being expelled), and I liked getting an end result I’d never got before. Usually I go hard on blue/white magic, this time I focused on green/black, so Alice has “Tentacle Plant Caretaker” as ‘future career’ (and she was also voted “most likely to sneak into the boys bathroom”, which I suspect must have made both Donald and her blush a lot).

Like, if I could play the Donald/Ellen romance that would be Ideal. ...or read that fic, because it’s unfortunately not a fic I’m interested in writing. But I am so there for Donald’s issues with his family, and Ellen’s issues with her family, and Ellen being pretty smart and good with magic, and Donald also being pretty smart and good with magic, and both of them being into theater, and Donald being chill and Ellen being combative.
