stonn.....
raised by a couple aunts, i think, after a certain point
her dad left early, sort of a deadbeat
her mom died. illness, i think
her aunts took her in sort of by default; they all lived together the last couple years of her mom's life anyway, them & her aunts & all the cousins
when she says she has no siblings, she always feels a little bit like she's lying, even though, strictly speaking, she's correct
ironworks were the family trade, but though she was a more than decent hand, her passions were never there
she can throw a knife about as well as she can make one--which is to say, rather flawlessly, but without any flourish
stonn, i think, did rather want to learn magic. i think it came as a bit of a disappointment to discover one day that she just--couldn't
(or maybe that she couldn't anymore?)
(i think it was more than a bit of one. i think it crushed her, for a while)
i think she grew up in one of the places that thought magic was tied to the soul, to one’s will, and maybe also the strength thereof
i think magiclearning was mandatory there
(i think she wanted to achieve mastery, though, which definitely wasn’t)
i think people tried to fix her
i think, for a long time, she wanted them to
i wonder what made her stop
i wonder when. i wonder why
i think stonn likes to learn
i think that aspect of wizardry appealed to her
prefers to be direct, where she can
has...rather a lot of scars of varying kinds
her voice is a bit gravelly. unexpectedly, she can sing passably well
(she doesn’t enjoy it.)
(i think she sang to someone, once. i think she lost them.)
she makes connections fairly quickly but doesn’t always verbalize them
there’s a lot she doesn’t verbalize
there was a grandmother, once
quiet, warm, who liked to get down on her hands and knees and bury her hands in soil, long after her joints gave out on her
this grandmother tried, when she was young, to teach her magic
succeeded, a little. and they had that in common
when stonn’s magic began slipping, when she was so disappointed and so scared, it was the grandmother who reassured her
(told her about a sister and a husband stonn had never met, who’d been similar, and showed her, in little ways, they still had things in common)
(maybe she didn’t sing to someone. maybe she was sung to. maybe it was by the grandmother)
(maybe it was both. the grandmother sang to her, she sang to someone else, and in the end she lost them both)
lyla, i think, reminds stonn of her grandmother
(the gardening, the intentionally-softened edges, the refusal to take any shit)
lyla, i think, is painful for stonn to be around sometimes
len is less so
(she bonds with len a little faster, but it still takes time)
stonn loves to read, but hasn’t in a very long time (she’s been busy)
she takes notes in a dead language
isn’t bad at disguises
deadpan sense of humor
hasn’t gone home in a very long time, but has quietly kept several traditions
others she’s let slide, but she remembers them
lil bit of an insomniac
polishes knives when she can’t sleep, sometimes, or when she’s thinking
has been told she’s offputting. has been told she’s unnerving
has never bothered softening it
(hasn’t bothered in decades)
has used it to her advantage, a time or two
(or several hundred)
rarely sentimental
commanding
determined to make the world a little better, however she can
so she does things like leave campsites tidier than she found them
and spy for mysterious organizations bent on dismantling oppressive power structures
as u do
