Advent Calendar || Day Three @ifyoucatchacriminal

Maybe there will come a day when Spencer regrets letting Beth have a spare key to his apartment. Maybe one day he will notice that her joking about being menahune will become funny to him. But as she puts the last touches together, she's already starting to second guess herself. She isn't even sure if Spencer has a particular observation or subscribes to any particular denomination of belief. He's never negatively questioned her about being able to hold onto different beliefs herself, as if one can go to mass several times a week and certainly celebrate Catholic holidays while still having faith in the gods of her mother's culture, blending them together into a kind of neo-paganism that is extremely personal. Given that she has a set amount of hours to work with, she waits in her car until he leaves for work. Barring a new case popping up, she has roughly ten hours or so to work her okole off and she does; the tree ~ a living one, because neither of them are fond of killing, and a potential engagement to replant it in the future ~is so very modest compared to the ones in her townhouse, the Admiral's, and her church's. But the decorations are all antique. Things from her attic boxes, new lights, bulbs curated over weeks from various thrift stores and estate sales. Some are hand made, like the stocking she places on one of the small outer branches. And so is the tree skirt upon which a modest collection of gifts rest. Not only for him but for Diana, the members of his team. Beth knows enough to understand family in all its various shapes. She's carefully anchored a shelf to act as a mantle that won't ruin his wallpaper. Boughs of cedar mixed with holly, dried orange wheels studded with cloves wrap green arms around a single candle ~white, beeswax, hand-dipped~ in a hurricane glass. She can't hang the mistletoe high enough to have it hang over his head. Mostly because she can't reach a good spot with his tray-ceilings. That will have to be a cautiously negotiated verbal contract with them. Dinner catered in because she doesn't want him to suffer food poisoning rests in the oven to keep arm, along with desserts and breakfast from Jay's shop sit temptingly on the counter. Wine chills in his fridge but she's got a pot of coffee brewing. A home filled with light, warmth, joy, comfort. Everything he deserves to come back to, or at least what she wants to give him. She's adjusting the star atop the tree when she hears his key in the lock and feels her belly tighten. There's no way he can't hear the soft, instrumental holiday music playing on his turn table. And just as he turns in, she turns around. Tender smile and gleaming eyes in contrast to the hip hugging dark skirt and matching cropped shirt. Bare feet with one set of toes atop the other, the faintest jingle of the belled anklet. Her voice is cinnamon-tinted apple cider warmed. "Some say, that ever 'gainst that season comes, Wherein our Saviour's birth is celebrated, This bird of dawning singeth all night long;

As tiny as they are, Beth does her best to hold Spencer's long elegant hands in her own, not daring to let go. Sometimes when nightmares refuse to let go, finding your way back to the waking world is difficult and she's willing to bet that he'd only gotten sleep because he'd taken something ~even if it's just melatonin~ to help get him there in the first place. When he'd first stirred, cried out, she'd been in the living room, quietly reading while Amadeus circuited his nightly patrol. She figured the cat would soon pad into Spencer's bedroom and curl up with him. Drawing her robe around herself, she'd come to the bedside, edged a hip there, and rubbed his back until he'd blinked once, twice, a third time. Spencer didn't seem fully aware, and so she'd begun asking very gentle questions. This is the first one he'd answered. She also can't help but notice he says William exactly the same way she says the Admiral. As if distance and a veneer of polite civility can erase the blood between them. She aches for Spencer, his situation, and his fears. "Take a furlough. A few weeks, an' I'm sure Rossi an' dem won' mind an' if dey do, den....you quit, let me take care of da bills an' you do somet'ing you love. We can move closer so you can see her every day."

One of the best things about having a distinctive classic car is that Beth can fit at least one body in her trunk if she absolutely has to. Instead, it has gifts.

Very intentionally Beth had texted Spencer that she'd be waiting for him at his home so that he didn't exactly have to take his gun out and shoot her thinking she's an unsub ~such a funny word to her in context of a very serious job he does~ looking to do him harm or that maybe she's stalking him which might be worse, all things considered. She tells him that she doesn't mind waiting in his apartment's parking lot, that she doesn't plan on taking up his entire evening. If he doesn't have plans, she's taken the week off. Yes that's presumptuous and maybe that is why she doesn't mention it. It would have been far more romantic if she'd had time to set up but she does what she can. A kiss to his jaw helped into place by standing in the door well of her car. While Spencer washes off the grime and worry of the day, she manages to bring up all three gifts. The smallest of them isn't a first edition, but it was the oldest copy she could get from Sotheby's, and hopefully he'll understand. She is a touch winded when he comes back out and tries to look nonchalant. "Took da liberty t' order dinner for us." She completely ignores the wrapped gifts, in favour a long and appreciative glance at Spencer himself.

Champagne Kisses || Accepting They settled the matter like the civilised and educated folk they are. A coffee-fuelled, two day straight game of Trivial Pursuit ~classic Genus I and the 25th anniversary editions~ and she almost had him on the sports and the music questions. He was impressed with her Whovian universe knowledge, and she was impressed by his anatomical knowledge and even complimented him insofar as he could have passed the MCATs. At no point did she so much as hint that his PHDs did not make him a 'real' doctor. Her downfall came when he had to answer Arts and Literature for his final wedge. She took one look at the question, flung the little brown plastic piece at him and amidst teasing laughter, made a very unladylike hand gesture. Spencer will have the distinction of being the only person beyond her brother ~and siblings don't count~ to have ever seen her do it. So here they are at the BAU's New Year's Eve gathering, arranged by Penelope, whom Beth as to admit she loves like no one else on his team. She has a quiet conversation with Rossi ~Call me David~ and is glad that maybe just maybe Spencer has a second surrogate father. Though honestly, she doesn't imagine that he will ever get over the loss of Jason Gideon. Tonight isn't the kind of night that you think about things like that, and so Beth does her best to sparkle like the lights and keep things light. Maybe the things she likes best about all of this is how effortlessly he seems to be himself amongst his co-workers, his family really, with only a little good-natured teasing now again. How brightly he shines amongst them. And she can't help but watch his face animate with an expression of unmistakable adoration. And maybe because they're responsible folks, the party ends just after ten in the evening. The car service picks them up, mostly because Beth doesn't want Spencer taking the metro at this time of night, and especially not on New Years. She tells the driver they'll be going to Georgetown, and she smiles shyly when he raises a brow and looks at her with those big, questioning eyes. She promises if he has a case in the morning, she'll give him a lift. By the time they reach Beth's door, Spencer is adorned with her sheer black silk wrap around his neck. Her heels ~they add exactly six inches to her height and she's still too short~ are kicked off before she uses key and turns off the alarm. "Irish all have 'may the road rise up to meet you' sort of blessings. In Hawai'i, before Cook, before our illegal occupation? We celebrated Makahiki, a time for rest of people and land, when no war could be made." She searches around in where she meant to go with this, but no, Beth has sort of lost the plot on this one. "Toast in dere somewhere," she murmurs and reaches up. Her hands frame his jaw as she stands a tip-toe and pulls him down without a lot of prompting. She means to offer him a sweet kiss, a gentle one. But instead, it's all fire and fire works, ten minutes early. One she breaks only briefly to whisper his name around the kiss before returning to his mouth, just as hungry as before.

Spencer plays with a strand of Beth's hair where she's pressed up against his side while they both read case files. His are hopefully more gruesome than hers. He turns and presses a kiss to the crown of her head, humming to the classical music he'd put on that morning. He looks down at her and smiles. Saturdays like this, when they're both off, are relaxing, even when they bring work home with them. Just bring next to her is nice. He loves the time they spend together.

"What's our song?" He asks, tugging lightly on her hair. "Do we have one?"

Sweet Melodies || Accepting

The stories that Spencer's files tell give her both a much dimmer world to live in, and a horrified curiosity. In cases where his unsub displays every sign of mental illness that never got noticed, treated, or cared about? She can only bleed sympathy. Some of them, though, are diseased in a different way; cruelty or greed or any of a dozen very human and very disturbing frailties. But the biggest take away she gleans from the sanitised details is just how much strength and resolve Spencer is capable of. It takes a special kind of person to be able to stare into the abyss and not loose an iota of of their humanity. If anything, she thinks his compassion and consideration for others has only grown. Her eyes light up when he asks the question, and for a moment she hedges her bets with a very filled silence. She knows he's enjoyed pouring through her brother's collection of vinyl, records stretching as far back as the time they were made and collected up until recently, when she lost heart in continuing to grow what they already have. "I mean, I can t'ink of a few," she says, and carefully disentangles herself from his side. It takes her no time at all to switch her stereo over from Chopin with only a little regret, to the playlist on her phone, and have it play through the house speakers. He doesn't know he's going to do it until he already has her hand caught between his, fingers tangled together. He lifts her hand, so small but with an underlying strength that he admires greatly, and presses his lips to the back of it, a fleeting touch, barely there before it's gone.

It genuinely never occurred to Beth to let him know that she was leaving town for a week or so, that she would be out of cell-service range. Once there was a time where she wouldn't leave the house without her brother. Nowadays, she lets Tony know if she's going to be gone a while when he isn't busy himself on a case or trapped on a ship for whatever unfathomable reason Gibbs cast him out. But she didn't call him. She didn't text him, either. If either of them wanted to look at the roots of why she hadn't, the surface layer says she takes the drive four times out of the year. It's muscle memory more than anything and not exactly taxing. A little deeper says she self isolates because she is a private person. She doesn't need anyone knowing that she wears sheer robes and worships under the trees to saints unveiled into their most primal aspects. And at the core? She can't imagine herself as being that important to anyone not bound to her by blood. She doesn't see herself as someone who could ever be important enough to be missed. And certainly not by someone like Spencer. Some part of her almost wonders how he knew to find her at the Seneca lake cabin but maybe he'll tell her and if not? She doesn't want to spoil the magic. She didn't hear him drive up, either, and because he's allowing himself to be so vulnerable, so sweet and chivalrous ~a knight from the Courtly Age~ she doesn't expect his team to come tramping into her sacred woods, trampling tender spring shoots and flowers underfoot and scaring the animals. Wordlessly she watches him sink into the loam and leaf layer of the wood and suddenly Spencer doesn't tower over her as he often does. His elegant hands catch one of hers with a strength that belies their slender grace. He has hands of air, square palms, long fingers, strong knuckles. He'd laugh if she told him that it comes to pass that he has excellent communication skills, a sharp analytical mind, and innate intellectual curiosity but that he often stands in his own way with doubts that creep in from the edges. The kiss...is over before it begins and leaves her with a certain misty feeling in her chest. Her free hand finds itself rising and getting lost in the thick tangle of his curls, maybe brushing a lock behind his ear. Maybe the pads of her fingers follow the shape of his scalp to cup the back of his head. She urges him to look up at her. There doesn't need to be words as she leans in and presses her brow to his. The tip of her nose to his. Her lips...all but touching. She breathes in his exhale, breathes out when he drags in his own air. Honi. Sharing sacred Ha between them, a greeting old before some of her islands were even formed. But then something changes, and her mouth settles on his, lips soft and cinnamon sweet...and twitching just a little. Clear signs she's nervous but curious to know if he'll kiss her back, maybe more properly this time.

Imagine You and Me || Accepting

If you ask Beth, she will die on the hill that in some universe one of them is the other's nemesis, hero to villain. Ask again and she couldn't tell you which of them would fill the roles. Everything about him should incense her; she's used to being one of, if not the, smartest people in the room even if her ability to express that is limited. She might grudgingly admit that he might be smarter. They have very similar skills and hobbies {poker and chess are certainly turn-based-combat}, they likely together have read more books and own more books than many of the great libraries in the world. She will argue which of them is the actual doctor {if only to get a rise out of him, and see if he'll kiss her into silence}, they are both cat-and-the-colour-purple people. She loves his Poet's heart, she thinks he's absolutely beautiful and she hates that he can reach the shelves above her fridge. She doesn't hate his devotion to his mother or to his team, or how close he is to JJ. It just means that he knows the meaning of love and loyalty, and it's no different than her own closeness with her brother, her hanai-sister, her cousin Tony. If anything, it simply gives her a preview of the future they might build together. He's the dreamy sort of romantic in the classical sense, and she loves that. She also thinks his jokes are hilarious. She also appreciates how sensitive he is to her myriad flaws {the speech impediment/reliance on pidgin, her CAPD, the bipolar episodes} but that he doesn't use them to negate her capability or treat her as something far to delicate. And I cannot disagree with her in any way. She'd also probably turn me into chum if I did, so there's that <wink>. {{10/10 I love them, in a sweet and tender and shy nerdy way.}}

He's just returned from a bad case in Texas and the first place he thought to go is Beth's. He waits at her door for her to open up and when she does he doesn't say anything, just crowds into her space, pressing a desperate kiss to her lips, hands raised up to cradle her face. He kisses her for long minutes, needing this almost as much as he needs air. When he finally pulls away his cheeks are red and his breath labored.

"I should have called. I just needed to see you." Needed to feel her. "I'm sorry."

And Way Down We Go || Accepting

She doesn't know exactly why but something had told her to stay up late. An intrinsic feeling not associated with her usual bouts of insomnia, not because she had one too many cups of coffee ~as if there's such a thing as too much~ and not because Tony is out to sea and Spencer is out of state. Much as she hates to admit it Beth was adept at being alone before reconnecting with her cousin and meeting Spencer. She read the news on the television. Volume low, captions on. Local then national. She worked on her latest set of receiving blankets for the smallest and most vulnerable of patients at the hospital. She ended up pacing for well over an hour. And when he knocks? Oh, but there is a flood of relief. Endorphins spreading out across her brain, given the light and growth conditions for that feeling to flourish when he all but pushes his way in. Words are utterly important, existing in ephemera between sharp, unrelenting kisses and the spasm of grasping hands. A vase behind her ~purely decorative, maybe it came with the townhouse in Georgetown, she isn't sure~teeters on its pedestal as she backs into it. Crashes to the ground and fractures unmourned as she tries to all but worm her way into his bones through layers of coat, shirt, skin. When they finally surface from one another to clutch at a much needed breath, she shakes her head. "Talk in a minute." She pushes the door shut, rearms the security system and locks. It's a good thing she talked him into leaving a spare set of clothes here. Beth all but drags Spencer to the self-sustaining island she's made of her living room, and less-than-politely urges him to sit. When he does, she climbs into his lap and lays her cheek in the space of his shoulder, doing her best to wrap around him. Buries her face in his neck. "Tell me wha' happened." Now she can stand to hear it, once she becomes an insulating armour against the world. Now that she knows he's safe and unharmed. "Or...you could tell me in da morning." Invitation. Implication. Whatever he wants to call it.

Deeper Than Skin || Accepting Beth takes a moment to lean back in her chair and offers him the dreamy sort of smile that shows no teeth, and is more pensive than amused. She doesn't realise that her toes might brush his knee beneath the heavy oak. She takes a sip of her wine and lets it linger on her tongue before swallowing it. She isn't looking into his eyes but instead her gaze trails upwards and to one side, searching attic and basement of her thoughts for an acceptable answer. "Trix cereal," she says with a little laugh and then turns toward him holding her palms out as if begging him to hear her out. "No, no. Don' laugh, I have reason for dis. Dere is a plant back home dat is extremely prolific and is use for everyt'ing. Kind dat grow near da sea is called naupaka kahakai which means naupaka by-the-seashore. Flowers only grow by halfs. Kahakai grows bottom half petals, and kuahiwi ~of da mountains~ grows in da uplands, but only top half of da petals. "One of da legends about why dis is starts wi' one boy and one girl. In every version of da story, da two young lovers are forbidden to be togeddah. In some is because he is a commoner and she is a noble, and back in old-old times, it was kapu for royalty to marry commoners.
