Risk Assessment: Each login attempt is evaluated against the set conditions to determine the level of risk associated with the request. Access Decision: Depending on the risk assessment, access is either granted, denied, or limited according to the predefined rules. Multi-Factor Authentication: An Extra Layer of Security ADSelfService Plus enhances account security through the implementation of MFA, which requires users to provide multiple forms of verification before gaining access. This method significantly reduces the risk of unauthorized access. Key aspects include: Various Authentication Methods: Users can authenticate via SMS, email verification, or biometric data, among others. Adaptive Authentication: Depending on the assessed risk level of the access request, different levels of authentication may be required. Real-Time Security with ADSelfService Plus The integration of these technologies into ADSelfService Plus provides a robust security mechanism that adapts to varying security needs in real-time. ManageEngine ADSelfService Plus Adds MFA for UAC To Protect Privileged Accounts
Tumblr media
ManageEngine announced that ADSelfService Plus, an identity security solution with MFA, SSO and self-service password management capabilities, has released MFA for Windows User Account Control (UAC) prompts that require credentials for added security. This feature is available as part of the product's Endpoint MFA add-on.  A recent report published by Verizon states that up to 40% of data breaches are the result of stolen credentials. MFA remains one of the top-runners for mitigating credential theft. When implementing MFA to protect the enterprise network, logins to machines, VPNs and cloud applications are usually considered. But, comprehensive security policies do not stop with just login protection. UAC prompts, especially Run as administrator prompts, are another major function that requires protection, as these prompts provide non-privileged user accounts with privileged permissions to perform tasks they wouldn't be able to otherwise.  NIST SP 800-171 mandates using MFA to protect local and network access to privileged accounts, which includes UAC prompts. An increasing number of cyber liability insurance providers are also instating MFA for all network access attempts as a prerequisite for insurance eligibility or renewal.  Parthiban Paramasivam, director of product management, ADSelfService Plus, said, "When implementing MFA for a stringent security framework like Zero Trust, enterprises must leave no stone unturned. Protecting UAC prompts with MFA is crucial, as misuse of administrator credentials can provide elevated permissions into the domain network and lead to sensitive data exposure and theft. ADSelfService Plus helps secure UAC prompts and thwarts bad actors from gaining privileged domain access, without disrupting the workflow of genuine users."  Using ADSelfService Plus' MFA Feature to Secure UAC Prompts  ADSelfService Plus supports up to 18 different authentication methods for its MFA feature. Admins can leverage the myriad of options including biometrics, TOTP and hardware keys, and tailor the solution to fit organizational requirements.  Other unique attributes of ADSelfService Plus' MFA feature include: Automated adaptation of authentication policies based on the user's time of access, geolocation, IP address and device. Comprehensive reports to track authentication attempts and failures. Apart from UAC, ADSelfService Plus helps protects machine logins (Windows, Linux, macOS); VPNs and other network endpoints using RADIUS; and OWA and other IIS web applications using MFA. ADSelfService Plus also helps enforce advanced password policies that go a step above the existing domain password policy through rules like banned use of palindromes, patterns and dictionary words.  Pricing and Availability MFA for UAC is available immediately in the latest edition of ADSelfService Plus as part of the Endpoint MFA add-on available for its Standard and Professional editions. Pricing for the Endpoint MFA add-on of ADSelfService Plus starts at USD 395 annually for 500 users.  Pricing for the Standard and Professional editions starts at USD 595 and USD 1,195, respectively.  ADSelfService Plus also offers a Free edition for up to 50 users. The Free edition offers major features of the product including SSO, self-service password management, password expiration notifications and advanced password policies. Top 6 Best Network Sniffing Tools In 2022 - A Complete Guide
Tumblr media
Top 6 Best Network Sniffing Tools In 2022 - A Complete Guide
Knowing what’s going on with your network from moment to moment is the only way to troubleshoot issues swiftly and avoid downtime. There are lots of tools that give you on-the-fly insights into network performance, but not all are created equal. To help you find the right network sniffer, we’ve ranked the best of the bunch on the market right now.
SolarWinds
As well as supplying products including service desk software for IT departments, SolarWinds also has an impressive Network Performance Monitor package, part of which is the Network Packet Sniffer. As the name suggests, this is capable of quickly identifying the causes of performance snafus, while ensuring that the data that it delves into is displayed in a coherent way. Another benefit of this tool is that it lets you sift through network traffic according to the different types of applications that are being used across the infrastructure. Thousands of apps are supported natively, including common social media solutions, communications services, cloud storage products and much more besides.
Auvik
Like SolarWinds’ offering, there’s a lot to be said about the user-friendliness of Auvik’s competing network sniffing tool. You don’t need to be a mastermind to work out what’s being tracked and analyzed by the software, and this kind of shallow learning curve is very useful in any new tool that’s in line for adoption at your organization. It’s also worth noting that this service is browser-based, which is convenient in terms of not being reliant on a local installation, or being beholden to a specific OS ecosystem.
Wireshark
Tumblr media
So far we’ve discussed network sniffing tools that offer free trials, but require payment to unlock the full functionality of the premium experience in the long term. With Wireshark, you get an open source tool that’s free to employ and is backed up by a large community of users, along with a vast knowledge base which you can draw upon to make the most of it. It supports Windows, Linux, MacOS and other platforms, and makes it easy not only to track traffic, but also export the data that’s gathered in whatever format you prefer for additional analysis and reporting elsewhere.
ManageEngine
The NetFlow Analyzer from ManageEngine may have a fancy name, but it also manages to have a clear and unfussy interface and a solid set of capabilities that make it worth considering alongside its better known rivals. You can use it to identify patterns in network traffic, and to oversee the ebb and flow of resource usage, logging everything as time passes and empowering admins with the info they need to make improvements to performance.
Paessler
Paessler’s PRTG platform is a wide-ranging monitoring solution in the same vein as SolarWinds’ equivalent suite, and factors in monitoring for traffic from the web, alongside things like file transfers and mail servers as well. As you’d expect from an enterprise-focused tool, it comes at a price, but you can try it out for free for up to 30 days before committing, which is helpful for budget management. One selling point of this tool is that it offers support for mobile operating systems like Android and iOS, and so is arguably more flexible than some of its rivals.
TCPDump
The most basic of network sniffing is provided by TCPDump, which is entirely command-line based and follows the open source approach to development. You’ll need to get to grips with the syntax it deployed to execute user instructions, but once you have it’s a lightweight and efficient monitoring solution. The thing to remember is that you can always change how you monitor your network, so don’t get wedded to one tool if there’s a better option out there. Read the full article

Collection without Protection?
Tumblr media
As future IT professionals, we are part of a community that aims to develop services and technologies with the intent to make things easier and/or to solve problems. However, when it comes to systems, it cannot be deemed functional and of use without inputs, which requires data. The process of examining data from several angles and condensing it into fresh, helpful knowledge is known as data mining. Although it is frequently employed in many different profiling processes, including marketing, surveillance, fraud detection, and scientific research, it presents a risk to data privacy standards since the principle of proportionality may be broken. This is due to the fact that extensive data analysis of previously gathered data is required for data mining to be effective.
This highlights the necessity for organizations to handle data in a way that minimizes the need to collect unnecessary data. Data minimization is the idea that data controllers (businesses or organizations) should only gather personal data that is directly relevant and required to fulfil a given purpose. Additionally, they should only keep the data for as long as is required to achieve that goal. To put it another way, data controllers should only gather the personal information that they actually require and retain it for as long as necessary.
However, it is important to realize that these decisions when it comes to data are sometimes not made on a technical basis. Marketing executives or politicians would prefer the ultimate collection of user data, disregarding data privacy laws in exchange for profit or political advantage. Meanwhile, individuals in IT would reject this as it is a clear and blatant violation of people's data privacy rights. Moreover, it raises the question of an organization's infrastructure and policies when it comes to safeguarding data. Still, there are a majority of people in power that do not consider this because of greed despite the sound suggestion of IT professionals.
Hence, the need to push the agenda of "Do not collect, if you cannot protect" to not only big organizations, but to startups as well, should be encouraged by the government and more people working with technology, especially in an age where information is heavily referenced. Not only will it help people who are not technologically inclined, but it can also benefit organization by reducing data storage costs, strengthening data security posture, fortifying data privacy measures, smoothens business operations, and maintaining compliance with data regulations.
