Edward Hopper, Manhattan Bridge Loop, 1928. Oil on canvas.
Describing his aims in Manhattan Bridge Loop, Hopper explained that the painting’s horizontal composition was an attempt to give “a sensation of great lateral extent” and bring attention to the cityscape beyond the frame; “I just never cared for the vertical,” he later quipped. His depictions of the wide spans of the city’s bridges, its industrial landscapes, and its low-slung buildings elevate the quotidian and prosaic over the iconic, offering a powerful counterpoint to the awe-inspiring views of the New York skyline celebrated in the news and in works by many of his contemporaries. Alfred H. Barr observed of Hopper’s work in 1933: His indifference to skyscrapers is remarkable in a painter of New York architecture.”

part 1 | part 2 | part 3 | part 4
"so." she has a grin on her face. she looks anything but happy. "i've been hearin' things, jackie boy. you 'hattan boys are playin' like you're going on a strike."
"well, we ain't playin'," jack mutters. "we are goin' on strike." davey watches the way spot's jaw sets. "and we- the two o' us came t'ask for your help, spot."
"my help?" she says quietly. it makes his skin itch, the way spot's looking at jack. she sets her chin on her cane and stares.
"we 'hattan boys ain't enough by ourselves. we need you guys. we- you brooklyn kids- y'know?"
"and davey?" spot asks, in a tone that gives off anger. "what d'you have to say?"
"um. well, you- you're the key for our strike. the most powerful borough, most feared newsies. we need you guys or we just don't have enough power. you're-"
"you want us to join?" spot interrupts. jack nods as she shoves herself off of her throne. "are you fucking kiddin' me?" jack swallows.
"spot, pulitzer can't treat us like we is nothin'."
"yeah?" she shoves him back. "your new kid teach you that?" she shoves him again and he stumbles back a little. davey grabs his sleeve and she glares at him. "listen up, kelly. your boys in 'hattan ain't nothin' like me- they got some power i ain't ever gonna get! look around- how many girls do ya see?"
"spot-" jack glances away from her glare so she grabs his hair and yanks him down to her level.
"i said fuckin' look around, kelly. these girls need my protection. they need the money. they don't got your boys' safety. i ain't puttin' them in any danger." she lets go of his hair. "what happens when your boys give up?"
"give up?" davey repeats. he jumps forward to say something but her cane stops him. "we- we won't give up."
"yeah, you say that," she bites out. "until i know that, we ain't doin' anything. i ain't puttin' none of my girls through that!"
"spot-" jack tries.
"no. show me you ain't givin' up and we can talk. till then, hotshot and stray can take ya back." she sits in her throne, gestures for hotshot and stray. hotshot shows up, a big grin on her face. stray pops up behind him, bouncing on her toes.
"well, aintcha a pretty one?" stray loops her arm through davey's and starts to pull him along. "i dunno what you was talkin' to spot about but she ain't lookin' so happy, huh?" jack and hotshot trail behind them. "i heard somethin' 'bout a strike."
"nothing important now. she said no."
"eh, spottie ain't up for a good time like the rest of us," stray mutters. she bounces up and down as they walk. she salutes another girl they pass on the street. davey hears jack and hotshot talking with each other behind them. "whatcha want her to do? go on strike?"
"pulitzer raised the price of papes. manhattan is striking."
"ooh!" she grins. "sounds like a good time if i ever heard one. maybe i'll sneak on down. just to see ya," she adds quietly. davey smiles down at her. "i'll talk to spot for ya."
"will she change her mind?"
"she never does, not about important things. sorry, love." davey looks down. she stops at the edge of the bridge. "good luck on your strike."

A Brief History of Transit in New York City
In the late 19th century, many enterprising entrepreneurs had their eyes on a lucrative sector - public transit. Many of the nation’s railway companies were undergoing restructuring, new technologies meant that infrastructure was in need of updating, and cities like NYC were willing to pay.
One such entrepreneur was engineer William Barclay Parsons. He and his team were tasked with creating the designs for the city’s first subway system when the Rapid Transit Act was passed. In 1900, after two years of legal negotiations surrounding route alignment, their plans were finalized and a contract signed. Heins & LaFarge Architectural Firm was hired to design 28 subway stations and one multimodal hub, featuring two shining crown jewels at either end - City Hall Station to the south and Highbridge Park to the North.
Ground was first broken at City Hall on March 24th, 1900, in a ceremony officiated by Mayor Robert Van Wyck. They repeated the ceremony for its sister station at Highbridge Park and 170th St. exactly one year later. There were plans to build a grand new bridge across the Hudson River just a few blocks north, which would finally connect mainland railroads to the island of Manhattan. At the time, all passengers had to transfer to ferryboats to get to their destinations.
Highbridge Park was by far the more extravagant of the two. No expense had been spared in its design. Like its sister station at City Hall, it featured glass ceilings, mosaic tilework, and brilliant Romanesque arches. Unlike its sister, it was intended as the ultimate multimodal transit hub for all incoming visitors, and so possessed ample space to connect the country’s railways to the city’s brand new subway system, as well as terminals for the above-ground trolley system and connections to the new bike routes that were being built. It also possessed far greater luxuries than its sister. It was fully integrated into the city’s sewage system, which was nearing the end of its 50-year-long city-wide installation. There was a fine dining establishment on sight, a mezzanine level with shops selling every good a traveler could want, and even a women’s restroom with flush toilets and mahogany seats! Throughout the century prior, it had been widely considered indecent for women to relieve themselves in public, but that particular public attitude was rapidly changing as shopping became a more prominent leisure activity for affluent ladies. This feature would prove to be extremely popular in years to come.
Remarkably, construction only took four years, and nearly stayed within its original budget (for anyone that follows these sorts of megaprojects today you know how rare that is). The first subway train in New York City departed from the City Hall Station at 2:34 pm on October 27th, 1904. The line carried 152,000 passengers on its first day, most of whom rode the entire length of the line, then disembarked at Highbridge to explore the amenities and take a walk along the scenic Harlem River Drive. By all accounts, it was a major success.
The subway system saw increases in ridership year after year. By 1910 the demand was so high that most stations needed to be extended to accommodate 10-car trains. Unfortunately, this was the beginning of the end for City Hall Loop. It was built on such a tight curve that the 10-car trains could not use it as a stop, and it was such a unique shape and location that it could not be extended without completely rebuilding it. As a result, many lines were forced to bypass the station, favoring the Brooklyn Bridge station a mere 600 feet away. In spite of this, the station managed to hold on for several decades. Its use was very limited in that time, and in the end it was closed as much as it was open. Its final day of service was December 31st, 1945. In the 60s it was considered as a possible location for the New York Transit Museum, but the abandoned Court Street station won out. Nowadays you can catch glimpses of it if you ride the 6 past its final stop, and once in a while NYTM members can go on official tours.
The fate of the Highbridge station was not quite so slow a tragedy. In 1905, a mere 5 months after opening and before the bridge had more than the first two piers in the water, a sinkhole opened under the dining room and main lobby, compromising the integrity of the entire building. Luckily there were warning signs and everyone was able to evacuate with minimal injury. Several teams of engineers and contractors were hired to assess the situation, but all of them came back with the same answer - it might technically be possible to fill in the sinkhole and repair the damage, but it would be extremely expensive, time consuming, and the weight of the structure was such that more settling and more sinkholes were possible, especially once steam trains were introduced. The entire project went down in history as a prime example of why geologists should always be consulted during the planning of any large structure. They halted construction on the bridge and shifted their focus to a new location. Railroad magnate and business expert Cornelius Vanderbilt had been acquiring and merging railroads all over New York for a few decades now, and had built himself a railyard and depot in midtown Manhattan. It was in the midst of reconstruction after a devastating steam train crash in 1902, so it was the perfect place to redirect resources and build a new station. They updated the name from Grand Central Depot to Grand Central Station, constructed the North River Tunnels to connect trains from the mainland, and the rest is history. It opened for business in 1913 and is still open to this day, with only routine maintenance having been done on the building in the intervening century.
The piers later became part of the George Washington Bridge, abandoning the train tracks in favor of six additional lanes for automobile traffic on the lower level. The Highbridge station, intended to be the shining crown jewel of NYC’s state-of-the-art transit system, was condemned, abandoned, and forgotten.

The Marble Hill neighborhood of New York, an exclave of Manhattan on the north side of the Harlem River. The red line marks out the neighborhood/borough boundary. This is Manhattan's only land border.
Tumblr media
At the time of the American Revolution, it looked like this: hilly, marshy, and mostly empty.
Tumblr media
Marble Hill is about a mile and a half north of the site of Fort Washington, the last American redoubt in the city during the British invasion of 1776. When Washington decided to evacuate Manhattan, his men marched north through Marble Hill across the old 17th century toll bridge known as the Kings Bridge. 3,000 Americans stayed behind, trying to hold Fort Washington. Outflanked by Hessians scaling the Harlem Heights, they were surrounded and forced to surrender.
The Kings Bridge survived the revolution. It also survived New York's metamorphosis into world megalopolis and continued to be used into the 20th century. Below is a photo of the span as it appeared in the late 1800s. On a personal note, as a native New Yorker, pictures of wood-framed houses and trees growing wild in the heart of the modern city are so strange to look at!
Tumblr media
Some time before World War I, New York's shipping concerns convinced the city to dig a canal connecting the mouth of Spuyten Duyvil Creek in a straight line with the Harlem River. This had the effect of bypassing the loop of the creek surrounding Marble Hill, which was drained and filled in creating the topography you see today. Below you can see the old water course crudely superimposed over the current city.
Tumblr media
These changes had two effects. First, Marble Hill was permanently severed from Manhattan Island. Though surrounded by the Bronx, legally it's still part of New York County. Second, once the creek moved south, so did the crossing. The excavated earth from the bypass was used to fill in the old loop. They never tore down the bridge, though. They just buried it. It lies there still, somewhere beneath the stretch of pavement where Marble Hill Avenue meets Kingsbridge Avenue.

Redfin Warns Record-High Costs and Economic Jitters Are Freezing Spring Home Sales
Tumblr media
Key TakeawaysSpring home sales have stalled nationwide due to record-high prices and economic uncertainty. Both buyers and sellers are hesitant to act as rising mortgage rates and shrinking inventory worsen affordability concerns. The market is experiencing growing stagnation, increasing the risks for those waiting on the sidelines. Housing Market Faces Unprecedented StandstillRedfin reports a chilling halt in spring home sales, with high prices and economic jitters stalling deals from the shadows of the Golden Gate Bridge to Wall Street’s canyons.Buyers and sellers alike are paralyzed as mortgage rates climb, inventory shrinks, and affordability collapses, trapping first-timers and veterans in a brutal deadlock.Market stagnation grows, fueled by surging competition and shrinking hope on every Main Street.Critical risks await those who miss the next move.Spring Home Sales Stagnate Amid Rising Costs and UncertaintyAs the shadow of record-high costs lengthens over the nation’s housing market, sales in spring stand frozen, echoing through avenues from Wall Street’s glass towers to the quiet stretches of Route 66.Numbers released this season reveal the slowest U.S. home sales pace in six years. Buyers face formidable mortgage rates, rising home prices, and vanishing inventory. The dream of homeownership feels as distant as the Hollywood sign across Los Angeles smog.Pent-up demand seethes like traffic on the Brooklyn Bridge, yet cannot break through. High mortgage rates remain the blockade, forcing many to abandon dreams or wait, desperate for a crack in the fortress of escalating costs. Economic uncertainty fans the flames of fear. Across Chicago’s Loop and Dallas’s suburbs, investors and homeowners alike are haunted by market volatility. Confidence has eroded, replaced with hesitation.Every open house is haunted by questions about what tomorrow may bring.Redfin now warns that existing home sales are trapped for now, expected to reach an annual rate between 4.1 and 4.4 million homes next year, but only if conditions shift. Even this forecast is dimmed by the specter of soaring prices—median home values are expected to climb roughly 4% in 2025, raising further barriers.Surging costs signal that more Americans will be priced out, especially first-time buyers facing diminishing prospects.Inventory is the ghost in every room. Whether a Victorian near Boston Common or a desert home outside Phoenix, low supply suffocates choice. Fewer properties mean relentless bidding wars and dwindling hope for affordability.Add to this the compounding impact of foreign investment. From Miami’s high-rise coastline to the streets of San Francisco, the influx pushes prices further out of reach.Global buyers stake oversized claims, intensifying scarcity for those living locally. As buyers falter, more Americans eye alternative housing options—condominiums instead of single-family homes, rentals inside converted warehouses, tiny homes in the shadow of the Seattle Space Needle.Yet, these alternatives, while offering shelter, often sacrifice space, stability, and the sense of permanence once promised by the American dream.Analysts point to a fragile rental market, its prices more stable, threatening less volatility than the chilled seller’s market. Yet with rental stock unevenly distributed, cities like Atlanta and Denver see only fleeting relief. For many, renting isn’t a choice but the only option left.Policy initiatives loom on Capitol Hill, hinting at possible relief. Yet as the nation awaits action, the threat grows. Without swift intervention, more communities—from Houston’s vast neighborhoods to Manhattan’s tight corridors—could slide into deeper crisis. There is no sign of imminent improvement. The pent-up demand may drive sales next year, but if inventory remains low and costs surge, relief may be out of reach.Today, as each day passes, the risk of inaction and delayed response to impending disaster becomes more clear. The warning is precise and urgent—change is required, or the freeze will deepen, and opportunity will rot on the vine.
AssessmentBuyers are pulling back these days, held in place by historic home prices and all the uncertainty that just won’t quit. It’s almost like the housing market has frozen over, kind of like the reflecting pool at D.C.’s National Mall during a cold snap.Every little climb in interest rates, every new headline about the economy—it all feels like another nudge keeping home sales from bouncing back to where they were before the pandemic.Meanwhile, the competition for what’s left gets fierce, and shrinking inventory means buyers and investors are navigating some seriously tricky waters. If you’re thinking of sitting out, consider this: waiting around could mean missing that rare window of opportunity, since high costs and constant changes are reshaping the housing landscape every day.Don’t just watch from the sidelines—now might be the moment to act, before this wave of volatility changes the market even more.

ACE Project Management – A Leader Among Construction Management Companies in NYC
The city that never sleeps is always building. From high-rise condos in Manhattan to complex infrastructure upgrades in Brooklyn and beyond, construction is the heartbeat of New York City’s evolution. But with such a fast-paced environment and complex regulatory landscape, successful projects require more than just manpower and blueprints—they demand precise planning, innovative oversight, and seamless execution. That’s where construction management companies NYC come into play. And among them, ACE Project Management rises as a top-tier choice, redefining excellence in the industry.
Why Construction Management Is Critical in NYC
In a city like New York, where every square foot counts and timelines are tight, effective construction management is not optional—it’s essential. Whether it’s a residential tower, an educational facility, or a public infrastructure project, managing construction here requires deep local knowledge, strong leadership, and the ability to navigate complex logistics.
Construction management companies NYC are responsible for overseeing every aspect of a build—from initial planning and budgeting to procurement, contractor coordination, compliance, and final delivery. The best firms act as a central hub that ensures everything stays on track. The ACE Project Management Difference
What sets ACE Project Management apart from other construction management companies NYC is its origin story and philosophy. Unlike many construction management companies NYC that limit their services to one or two sectors, ACE Project Management brings a wide-reaching portfolio to the table. The firm’s expertise spans across:
Coop and condo communities where tight timelines and resident relations are crucial.
Rental and investment properties that demand smart ROI-driven planning and execution.
Education, healthcare, and religious facilities which require sensitive, functional, and code-compliant designs.
Commercial and industrial buildings, where efficiency and scalability are key.
Infrastructure projects like highways and bridges, demanding precision and safety at scale.
This cross-sector proficiency gives ACE Project Management an edge, allowing them to anticipate challenges, adapt to sector-specific requirements, and deliver consistent results. Whether it's a luxury condo in Queens or a complex healthcare facility in the Bronx, ACE has the experience and insight to manage it from concept to completion.
Technology and Innovation at the Core
In the world of construction, efficiency often determines success. ACE Project Management leverages cutting-edge project management tools and digital platforms to monitor progress, manage schedules, and keep clients in the loop in real time.
This use of technology is one of the key reasons the firm is a standout among construction management companies NYC. With tools for BIM (Building Information Modeling), cloud-based collaboration, and digital reporting, ACE ensures that every stakeholder—developers, investors, architects, and contractors—is informed and aligned at all times.
The result is a smoother workflow, fewer surprises, and better outcomes. From cost control to quality assurance, technology helps ACE deliver on its promises with confidence.
Commitment to Quality and Sustainability
ACE Project Management doesn’t believe in cutting corners. Quality is not a buzzword here—it’s a commitment that influences every decision, from material sourcing to subcontractor selection. Every project is approached with an eye for detail and a dedication to long-term value.
In addition to quality, sustainability is a core principle at ACE. As environmental standards rise and clients become more conscious of their carbon footprints, ACE Project Management leads the charge by incorporating green building practices. Whether it's using eco-friendly materials, optimizing energy systems, or building to LEED standards, ACE ensures that projects are future-proofed for both performance and responsibility.
Among construction management companies NYC, this combination of quality and sustainability sets ACE apart as a leader not just in what they build—but how they build it.
Community-Focused Construction
What makes ACE truly unique is its deep connection to the communities it serves. This isn't just about construction—it's about creating spaces where people can live, work, and thrive. As active community participants, the team at ACE Project Management is involved in local initiatives, charitable efforts, and public engagement strategies that go beyond the job site.
This community-first approach enhances the company’s reputation and ensures that each project contributes positively to the city’s social and economic fabric. In a city as diverse and dynamic as New York, having a construction partner that values people as much as progress makes a significant difference.
A Proven Track Record
When evaluating construction management companies NYC, results matter. ACE Project Management’s portfolio speaks volumes. Man’s Impact on the Environment . 07 January 2025 . New York City Hall Subway Station . New York, New York
City Hall, also known as City Hall Loop, was the original southern terminal station of the first line of the New York City Subway, built by the Interborough Rapid Transit Company (IRT), named the “Manhattan Main Line”, and now part of the IRT Lexington Avenue Line. Opened on October 27, 1904, this station, located underneath the public area in front of City Hall, was designed to be the showpiece of the new subway. The platform and mezzanine feature Guastavino tile, skylights, colored glass tilework and brass chandeliers. The Rafael Guastavino-designed station is unique in the system for the usage of Romanesque Revival architecture.
The station was built on a curve and could only accommodate five-car trains, which proved to be inefficient as subway ridership grew. Due to the infrastructural shortfalls, as well as its proximity to the nearby Brooklyn Bridge station, passenger service was discontinued on December 31, 1945, although the station is still used as a turning loop for the 6 and <6> trains.

In a crowd of more than 50,000 people at the New York City Marathon, there’s one pair of marathon shoes that clearly reign supreme: the Nike Alphafly 3. This carbon-plated sneaker is a favorite among marathoners of all levels. I’m far from an elite runner, but the 2024 New York City Marathon was my seventh time tackling 26.2 miles, and this time I wanted to try the infamous racing shoe I’ve heard so much about. Enter: the Nike Alphafly 3, the ultimate race-day weapon. Combining cutting-edge technology with unparalleled performance, these shoes are built for the kind of magic the New York City Marathon demands. It’s a race like no other, with its electric atmosphere, iconic skyline, and challenging course—this world-famous marathon draws runners from every corner of the globe. While the course is legendary, it’s also unforgiving, requiring grit, strategy, and the right gear to conquer its bridges, boroughs, and bustling streets. I laced up my pair of Alphaflys for this year’s race, and I quickly understood why they’re considered top-rated marathon gear. Nike Alphafly 3 — $285.00 Colors: 4 Sizes: 5-12 (women’s); 3.5 to 10.5 (men’s) Highly cushioned Responsive Absorbs impact Comfortable Great on all types of terrain Aerodynamic Wide range of sizes A journey in speed from Staten Island to Central Park The marathon journey began on Staten Island, with the buzz of thousands of runners echoing at the start line. Crossing the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, I immediately felt the advantage of the ZoomX midsole and Zoom Air units. The shoes absorbed every incline of the bridge and propelled me forward with a responsiveness I’d never experienced before. It felt like my energy wasn’t just conserved—it was amplified without much effort. As I entered into Brooklyn, the streets were alive with cheering crowds. I navigated through masses of runners, spectators, and uneven pavement, and the snug fit and incredible grip of the shoe gave me the confidence to keep pushing my pace. The halfway point loomed with the dreaded Queensboro Bridge. Once you hit mile 16, the race is known for its steep incline and relative silence. This section is both a mental and physical challenge, but the carbon-fiber Flyplate in the Alphafly 3 turned what could’ve been a struggle into an opportunity. Each step I took felt spring-loaded, and I surged up the bridge feeling speedy rather than sluggish. The Alphafly 3’s responsiveness kept my strides smooth and efficient as I powered through the last 10 miles. Crossing the finish line, I looked down at my Alphafly 3s, grateful for the role they played in making this one of my best marathon experiences yet. The final push through Central Park By the time we reached the Bronx (mile 20) and looped back into Manhattan, the fatigue was real—but so was my motivation to get to the finish line. Naturally, my legs started feeling heavy, but the shoe’s cushioning became my saving grace. As the rolling hills of Central Park approached, I was happy with how the Alphafly 3 absorbed the impact and propelled me forward. Turning into the final stretch on 59th Street and back into the park, I felt a surge of energy. Was it the crowd? The city? Or the shoes? Maybe it was all three. Crossing the finish line, I looked down at my Alphafly 3s, grateful for the role they played in making this one of my best marathon experiences yet. Why the Alphafly 3’s were perfect for the New York City Marathon The New York City Marathon is no ordinary race, and the Alphafly 3 is no ordinary shoe. Here’s why it was the perfect race-day shoe choice: Energy return: The combination of ZoomX foam, Zoom Air units, and the carbon-fiber plate provided exceptional energy return, keeping my legs fresher for longer. Comfort over 26.2 miles: The Atomknit 2.0 upper and secure fit ensured breathability and comfort, even through the toughest parts of the course. Adaptability on all terrain: From bridges to crowded streets to Central Park’s undulating paths, the Alphafly 3 handled every surface with ease.
Who is the Alphafly 3 for? The Alphafly 3 is a dream shoe for competitive runners chasing personal bests and podium finishes—but it’s not just for elites. Recreational runners looking to elevate their performance and chase their own marathon goals will appreciate the shoe’s ability to reduce fatigue and maximize efficiency. And let’s not forget the Alphafly 3’s stunning design. Nike has crafted a sleek, futuristic aesthetic that reflects its performance capabilities. The bold colorways (there are four to choose from) and unique silhouette are as eye-catching as they are aerodynamic, ensuring you’ll stand out both in the race and in your Strava feed.

Once you invest in a good quality bike and essential gear, the ongoing costs are minimal compared to owning and maintaining a car. Additionally, cycling can help you save money on public transportation fares, parking fees, and gas.
 4. Stress Relief and Mental Well-Being
Navigating the hectic streets of NYC can be stressful. However, bike riding provides an escape from the chaos, allowing adults to enjoy the journey and take in the sights. Riding through parks or along the waterfront can also provide a calming experience amidst the urban hustle.
Essential Tips for Bike Riding in NYC
 1. Choose the Right Bike
Selecting the right bike is crucial for a comfortable riding experience. Whether you prefer a road bike, hybrid, or city bike, consider factors such as your intended routes, riding style, and personal comfort. Many bike shops in NYC offer rentals, so trying different options can help you find the perfect fit.
 2. Stay Safe and Visible
Safety is paramount when biking in a bustling city. Equip your bike with lights and reflectors to enhance visibility, especially during low-light conditions. Familiarize yourself with NYC’s cycling laws and stay alert for pedestrians and vehicles. Bee In Motion is a renowned fitness coaching provider that offers some of the best classes of bike riding for adults in NYC. We equip adults with the techniques necessary for swift yet safe bike riding.
 3. Utilize Bike Lanes
New York City has made significant investments in cycling infrastructure, creating designated bike lanes throughout the city. Always use these lanes when available, as they provide a safer riding experience. If you find yourself in a situation where you must ride on the road, stay as far to the right as possible and follow traffic signals.
 4. Plan Your Routes
While spontaneity can be part of the adventure, planning your routes can lead to a more enjoyable experience. Consider routes that take you through parks, along the waterfront, or through quieter neighbourhoods to enhance your ride.
 Must-Visit Cycling Routes in NYC
 1. The Hudson River Greenway
The Hudson River Greenway is a popular choice for cyclists, offering a scenic, uninterrupted route that stretches from Battery Park in Lower Manhattan to the George Washington Bridge. With breathtaking views of the river and skyline, this path is ideal for leisurely rides or longer excursions.
 2. Central Park Loop
Central Park is a must-visit for any cyclist in NYC. The Central Park Loop, a 6-mile path around the park, offers a picturesque setting with lush greenery, scenic bridges, and iconic landmarks. Riding here provides a refreshing break from the city’s hustle and bustle.
 3. Brooklyn Bridge and DUMBO
Cycling across the Brooklyn Bridge is an iconic experience. The bike lane on the bridge offers stunning views of the Manhattan skyline and the East River. Once across, explore the DUMBO neighborhood, known for its trendy shops, restaurants, and waterfront parks.
 4. Prospect Park Loop
For those in Brooklyn, the Prospect Park Loop is a fantastic cycling destination. This 3.35-mile loop offers a mix of wooded areas, open fields, and beautiful landscapes, making it a great spot for a relaxing ride or a family outing.
 Conclusion
Bike riding for adults in NYC is more than just a means of transportation; it’s an opportunity to enhance physical health, embrace sustainability, and discover the beauty of the city from a unique perspective. With the right bike, safety precautions, and planned routes, adults can enjoy the many benefits of cycling while exploring everything the Big Apple has to offer. Am I an adrenaline junkie??
Just a little bit about me:
I was an art student. I studied photography, and I got a BFA from the University of New Mexico.
I rode motorcycles for 10 years as my only means of transportation.
I moved to New York City with my motorcycle and $300 after I graduated from college in 95 (took me a while to get through school because I loved being an art student so much)
I fell in love with road bikes… I learned how to navigate and ride around New York City on my bike and I dated the fastest sexiest bike messenger in Manhattan for 3 years.
We had sex on top of the one of the towers of the Williamsburg bridge.
(I still love riding in the streets and having sex in crazy places!)
I moved back to New Mexico in ‘99… This time to Santa Fe for a job as an assistant photo editor for Outside Magazine … I packed up and moved before I was officially offered the job—which I did officially get.
I snowboard, surf, mountain bike and rock climb.
I trekked to Everest Base Camp in Nepal last fall. I ascended 20,000 feet over 80 miles.
This summer, I’m doing the tour of Mount Blanc, which is 100 mile loop at elevation.
Oh!! And I had TWO natural child births….AT HOME!

Escape to the Great White North - Day 1
An early start--our "check in" at the port starts at 9:30.  The trip into NYC was faster than expected, considering that the last trip (in 2013) featured an hour wait at the Lincoln Tunnel.  Then a bit of a maze for parking (the port has a dedicated lot, and we paid in advance).
This was followed by a series of queues (which also went faster, to the point that we rarely actually stopped) and security checks.
Once checked in, the waiting game began.  Keep in mind everybody needs to disembark from the last cruise before the new passengers can walk the gangplank.  After that, you wait for the Unobtanium / Upsidaisium / Lustrium / Ambassador / Fleet Admiral Levels to board, and then finally us.
Once on the ship, we went to "muster drill"--required for safety purposes.  This used to involve getting your lifevest from your room, going out to a specific location out on the deck, and being walked through procedures.  Now, they just scan your card, and you watch a video in your room.
Then, another line to reserve slots at the restaurants.  While there are three main restaurants (Savor, Taste, and Manhattan) and a huge buffet included in your tour, there are also 9 specialty places where you need to reserve.  While in line, a woman helped us get to wifi (we both worked in IT, and we were baffled), so we did it on the app instead.  Onto Savor (or was it Taste?) for lunch.
We then wandered around the "Waterfront"--a outside loop dotted with restaurants, and sat for a bit.
We continued exploring, finding ourselves in a sales pitch for the spa.  Fortunately, it was announced the rooms were ready.  We'll do a tour later, but suffice it to say it's a lot bigger than what we could afford way back when.
If you go on a cruise today, you can find social media for any of them--we stopped in at a bon voyage party set up by a Facebook group. Met some nice people and exchanged local candies.
Around 5:30, the ship pulled out of the dock, past the New York skyline, the Statue of Liberty, and under the Verrazanos bridge--all as dusk fell.  An excellent view!
We went to the buffet to get a bite--along with everyone else.
So we ate and skedaddled (grabbing an ice cream on the way out) to our room. All our luggage arrived--yay! We turned off the room lights and sat out on our balcony for a bit, then got ready for bed.
Tomorrow--Newport!
