Marc Dailly was born in Geneva in 1978. He studied illustration at the Emile Cohl School in Lyon, France, earning his diploma in 2004. Soon after graduating, however, he devoted himself to his first passion: oil painting. 

Dailly’s artistic practice is marked by many different models. He is inspired by the work of painters from Vermeer to Goya, the realism of the Russian school of painting and Les Nabis, as well as American detective stories and Terrence Malik’s films.Dailly’s perspective on contemporary, figurative painting is to play on the “unspoken.” 

His technique is at once vivid and restrained. The artist is wary of falling into an overly rigid style and eschews a heavy hand:

"I am afraid to control my painting too much; I prefer to give free rein to my unconscious who will probably know better than I how to tell stories."

Genre Painting

Pieter Bruegel the Elder, The Peasant Wedding (1568)

The purpose of genre paintings is to illustrate scenes from everyday life, becoming popular in the 16th century. In the hierarchy of genres, genre painting ranked 3rd even though genre paintings do depict human forms. After 1517, Protestantism was more widely followed causing there to be no need for lavish decorations to furnish churches and so the popularity of genre painting for the home increased. Part of this is probably because genre paintings were something that a wider range of people could relate to. Common subjects presented in genre paintings were family life, ‘daily pleasures, social events and scenes of drunkenness’ as shown in ‘The Peasant Wedding’ above.

When it comes to modern day art, genre paintings are still present but less easily identifiable due to the shift in art becoming something that can create scenes more from the imagination instead of painting real life, everyday scenes. An example of a genre painting from the 21st century is ‘Tour de Table’ by Marc Dailly. A difference between this painting and the original genre paintings is how there are more stylistic liberties taken like the fisheye lens perspective and the inclusion of the viewer with the extra place set at the table. The subject of genre can also now be seen in photographs like ‘Laying Out’ by Julie Blackmon. Modern takes on genre painting change the modern viewers interpretation on 16th century genre paintings as scenes of everyday life are readily available in media such as television ad on social media. As well as this a modern viewer will not look at a 16th century genre painting and find it relatable in the same way as the 16th century viewer would have.
