Ukrainian painter Maria Prymachenko's folk art

Flax Blooms and a Cossack Goes to a Girl (1982)

This Beast is Making Magic (1983)

Corncob Horse in Outer Space (1978)

Lion (1947)

Vania Gives a Flower to Halia (1983)

Dumplings on the Shelf (1979)

Two-Headed Chicken (1977)
Stamp with Blue Bull (1947):

I want a stamp like this so bad. Something about the bull's design is so compelling to me.. it kind of looks like he is wearing one of those maid headpieces. On one hand it seems like working at the maid cafe is stressing him out, but on the other hand, perhaps it's his first day at the job and he's extremely excited and determined to do well but has poor control over his facial muscles so his joy reads as a bit frantic and scary to the customers (they'll come to understand and love him very much). There is a lot to love about this bull.

Mister Reagan, Look at This Painting and Think on how Heavy and Unwise This Atom Is... by Maria Prymachenko, 1986
Prymachenko was heavily affected as an artist by the Chornobyl Nuclear Disaster and dedicated several paintings to the subject. In her work, she portrayed nuclear power similar to her depictions of war - as a wild untamable beast that hungrily devours nature.

"don't cry for me. i won't get lost in the other world... i will work there too, i only need to take with me good paints and paper — i will remember to. i will never forget you and for all the people i wish love forever. i had a vision: such love will be in the world! everything will be okay. live with the light."

Artist: Maria Prymachenko
I had been wondering all day how to start this blog. I woke up yesterday to the news that Russia had struck Ukraine's largest children's hospital located in Kyiv. As I have been keeping up with Russia's war in Ukraine, I and many others keeping watch were incensed at Russia's brutality and inhumanity.
And the world shrugged as usual. World leaders are too afraid to step up in a way that is necessary. This was not the first hospital to be targeted by Russia, and it will not be the last. It's in their terror playbook
I wanted to start this with an angry entry, but instead I'm opting for this. It's summer here and I wanted to see something bright to serve as a soothing balm to help balance the rage I feel. I'm not an art historian by any means, but one of my favorite Ukrainian twitter accounts has helped me appreciate various Ukrainian artists. Maria Prymachenko's use of bright colors in her works gives that summer feel. It's soothing to gaze upon her works after seeing countless photos and videos of forests destroyed and the immense scale of Russia committing ecocide.
I may only be an observer an ocean away, but I can feel the existential threat looming if Ukraine were to lose.
