Saugatuck, MI – Saugatuck Brewing Company (SBC) is doubling down on its tasty new product releases this year aimed at meeting the growing demands of its customers and the craft beer market. With the Rainbow Rodeo IPA, SBC has cast a line of citrus, tropical and piney notes with enough body to make a splash, yet maintain an easy drinking, great bucking IPA. This IPA follows the release earlier this year of Lake Street Lager, a light bodied crisp and clean American lager for any occasion that is making its way to everyone's cooler for spring.

“We adapted techniques from brewing traditional Midwest IPAs and modern IPAs to create Rainbow Rodeo which embraces the best characteristics of each,” said Head Brewer Matt Alderink. “It is classic Midwest malt backbone with modern juicy mouthfeel and bitterness.”

Rainbow Rodeo IPA pays homage to its home state of Michigan’s reputation as a fly-fishing mecca for rainbow trout and rich heritage of farming. SBC’s brew masters baited Rainbow Rodeo IPA with malts of Two Row, Caramel 60, White Wheat and Flaked Oats coupled with Centennial, Simcoe, Cascade and Columbus hops. It weighs in at 7.0% ABV and 60 IBUs.

“Our Rainbow Rodeo IPA is produced to be a bright and easy-drinking American IPA, with a creative can that hooks you when you see it on the shelf. This new staple has been added to our mainstay lineup and our new variety pack, A Trip to the Art Coast, that includes other must-have styles. We see the Rainbow Rodeo artwork as a portal into a wild world of hops, where cowgirls wrangle in large rainbow trout, upending the idea that only men enjoy fishing and beer. La vista che si godeva da quel punto della città avrebbe fatto la fortuna di un albergo. Invece, a godersi l'ampio panorama del pittoresco golfo ai piedi del Vesuvio erano i clienti di una clinica privata. Salivo a piedi il ripido viale che portava all'ingresso con la voglia di chi deve, sorretta da silenziosi incitamenti mentali giacché il mio accompagnatore mi era di conforto quanto una zavorra. L'ingresso della clinica era una moderna vetrata automatica, incastonata nell'immobile con cognizione di causa, in modo da non stonare con la facciata del palazzo stile neoclassico, perfettamente tenuta, con tanto di cornicioni decorativi originali risalenti all'epoca in cui fu edificata dal barone tal dei tali.

Entro e ovviamente cerco subito l'accettazione. Quel posto sembrava uno scherzo: a destra corridoi ultramoderni, segnaletica dei reparti, luminosità a giorno, a sinistra un'ampia ala con bancone arredata con librerie e mobili antichi di noce scuro, austeri, pesanti, scarsamente illuminata. Mi avvicino un poco titubante e chiedo ad un giovane uomo seduto ad una scrivania più interna, dietro al bancone, se quella fosse l'accettazione. Mi fa cenno di sì col capo. "Ho un intervento programmato per oggi con il dott. Esposito" - "Non deve parlare con me. La signora sta arrivando". Quale signora? Mi volto e vedo avanzare a fatica verso di noi, attraverso la penombra, una donna sui generis che pareva appena uscita dal set di una pellicola noir. Molto anziana, vestita con un lungo abito nero, magrissima e diafana, i capelli bianchi, con a tratti ciocche ancora grigie, raccolti in una crocchia molto elaborata leggermente spettinata.

Se non avessi avuto massima fiducia nel chirurgo che doveva operarmi, rinomato per essere tra i migliori della regione, sarei andata via.

Io e mio marito ci lanciavamo occhiate rapide condividendo telepaticamente lo stesso pensiero "Gesù, ma dove siamo capitati?". Ci siamo salutate molto ossequiosamente e le ho detto perché ero lí. Ha controllato su un registro la mia prenotazione e poi ha iniziato la redazione preliminare della mia cartella clinica, chiedendomi con voce tremula i dati che trascriveva nei vari campi con una calligrafia perfetta a dispetto della tremolante mano ossuta. Ogni tanto mi guardava di sottecchi facendomi sentire più a disagio di quanto non fossi già. Nonostante glielo avessi ripetuto più volte non riusciva proprio a capire il mio indirizzo. Ho guardato il giovane uomo, seduto più in là all'austera scrivania, pensando che sarebbe venuto in aiuto della signora, ma è rimasto al suo posto impassibile. Così le ho chiesto se potessi aiutarla io a scriverlo. Mi avvicina il modulo e anche se ero nel verso contrario del foglio, senza girarlo, ho scritto per bene il mio indirizzo. Lei annuisce e mi guarda sorridente, con una strana luce in quegli occhi piccoli e vivaci che aveva a dispetto del viso rugoso. Poi mi dice che ero una persona bella, di quelle che non si incontrano facilmente. Avevo scritto per bene al contrario, questo faceva di me una persona che sapeva adattarsi e questa è una grande qualità. Ma si dispiaceva per me perché avrei "pagato a caro prezzo in questo mondo la mia signorilità". Mi ha lasciata un attimo interdetta e senza parole, ma onestamente in quel momento non avevo la lucidità per elaborare quella strana situazione, ero troppo in ansia per l'intervento e volevo solo che quel passaggio burocratico si concludesse il prima possibile. Mi sono limitata pertanto ad annuire imbambolata e ad un sorriso di circostanza. Ho pensato, tra l'altro, che quelle parole facessero parte di un marketing adulatorio vecchio stampo, che lei tenesse quell'atteggiamento con tutti i clienti e, lì per lì, non mi è sembrato nemmeno strano che dicesse ad una ragazza, che doveva essere dello staff parasanitario stando alla divisa, che ero sua amica e perciò di accompagnarmi alla stanza più bella da dove si vedeva il mare.

Certo che desideravo poter vedere il mare, e che mare direi, ma non ci vogliono grandi qualità divinatorie per immaginare che chiunque si trovi lì speri di beccarsi una delle stanze panoramiche per addolcire, diciamo così, la pillola della degenza.

La stanza era essenziale, asettica, triste. C'era la TV e mio marito si mette subito comodo sul letto a scegliere qualcosa da guardare. D'altronde cos'altro poteva fare, lo aspettavano ore di attesa. Prima di eseguire tutte le prescrizioni ricevute dall'infermiera circa la mia preparazione pre-operatoria, mi affaccio al balcone e mi beo del tepore del sole e di una vista degna di una cartolina. Guardandomi intorno noto altri palazzi ed alcune abitazioni e penso a che fortuna hanno quelle persone a poter guardare quel panorama tutti i giorni a tutte le ore. Torno dentro per fare quello che devo fare, di lì a poco sarebbe arrivato l'anestesista a parlarmi, meglio farmi trovare pronta.

Sento della musica rock e due voci maschili che parlano e ridacchiano mentre mi sistemano qualcosa addosso. Cerco di ricordarmi dove sono e cos'è quella luce fortissima che mi acceca. "Bentornata!" il faccione del chirurgo mi sovrasta e mi ripara un poco dalla luce, così che riesco a riconoscerlo e a ricordarmi chi sono, dove e perché. Che strana sensazione quel salto spazio temporale che crea l'anestesia: sembra che venga premuto il tasto off/on. Un momento prima ci sei, un momento dopo sei completamente inattiva nel corpo e nella mente. "È andato tutto bene, stiamo per spostarla in stanza. Dovrà restare un paio d'ore in osservazione... dopodiché se riesce a fare pipì potrà anche andare a casa se vorrà". Sì che voglio.

Le due ore di attesa più interminabili di sempre. Finalmente ricevo l'ok tecnico del dottore e mi rivesto, anche se ho l'agilità di un bradipo dovendo fare attenzione ai punti. È sera ormai quando scendo in accettazione e ci trovo una ragazza con quel che sembra il mio dossier già pronto. Mi guardo intorno e, non so perché, mi viene di chiederle se la signora anziana che avevo incontrato la mattina avesse finito il turno. Lei ride divertita e poi, sporgendosi un poco verso di me, dice sottovoce, come se mi stesse confessando chissà quale segreto"La signora è sempre di turno... È la proprietaria di questa clinica". E infatti, nemmeno finisce di parlare che la signora appare, ma stavolta non l'avevo vista arrivare. Mi guarda con aria molto compassionevole e mi chiede come sto. Libera la ragazza e mi dà le fatture da saldare, per le quali inizio a compilare assegni che poi le passo chiedendo di controllare se vanno bene. Mi dice che si vedeva che ero una persona precisa e sicuramente quello che avevo fatto era fatto bene, infilando poi gli assegni nel mio dossier senza nemmeno girarli per dare un'occhiata veloce. Le chiedo il certificato di degenza da presentare come giustificativo a lavoro e nel mentre che lo compila chiacchieriamo del più e del meno. Nel salutarci mi dice "Sono stata veramente felice di conoscerti, però figlia cara ascoltami bene, se continui così tra dieci anni morirai. Abbi più cura di te". Ma perché dovevo morire? Non l'ho capito né ho chiesto, archiviando la strana nonnina come un po' fulminata. Però sulla strada di casa, ripensandoci, mi pentii molto di non aver chiesto in base a cosa dicesse così, almeno per curiosità, hai visto mai che la signora avesse un terzo occhio. Chissà perché non siamo mai perfettamente coscienti di quello che ci succede mentre ci succede.

Sono passati cinque anni da quel giorno. Se ha avuto ragione, me ne restano altri cinque.

Hey, Tumblr

I figured I would give this another try. It has been almost a decade since I've used Tumblr regularly and at least four years since I disabled all my old accounts, but with the impending collapse of Twitter and the prioritization of video content on Instagram I just figured I would try out some other corners of the internet and see what works for me. I've also been toying lately with the idea of a Capital B Blog as a place for longer descriptions of my projects (because who actually reads long captions on other platforms?) so with all that combined, here we are.

This is an introductory post!

I'm Emily and I'm a freelance medical illustrator and designer based in Grand Rapids, MI. Originally from Ohio, I graduated with my BFA in Biomedical Art from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 2014. I moved to Grand Rapids shortly after graduating, and then spent five years working as a full-time planetarian at the Grand Rapids Public Museum, all the while freelancing a bit and working other odd gigs on the side; then in 2019 I decided to do a big life change, quit my job, and dove headfirst into being self-employed. Studio Hromi LLC officially turned three years old this August, and these days I work out of my home office/studio and provide medical illustration support for healthcare clients worldwide, as well as general illustration and design services, and selling prints and other artwork online, at artist markets, and in a few retail spaces in Grand Rapids. I truly consider myself a full-time creative, and being self-employed is a privilege and something I'm so proud to have accomplished.

My day-to-day is largely centered around medical illustration client work, but my current gimmick within my personal art practice is illustrating iconic buildings in Grand Rapids (and elsewhere), a series called Places We Have Loved.
