From my post on Brian’s education, Brian’s rundown on his O- and A-levels:
<<<I got about 12 O-levels, and at A-level opted for pure maths, applied maths, additional maths and physics, and, with two As and a B, got a place at Imperial College London. There were some brilliant lecturers - Dr Payne, for example, who would bound across the stage making wave motions to illustrate his lectures on “Vibration and Waves”.>>>
And! What sounds like “maths, maths, and oh yeah, MORE maths...” decoded. From wikipedia, the difference between each.
Pure mathematics is the study of mathematical concepts independently of any application outside mathematics. These concepts may originate in real-world concerns, and the results obtained may later turn out to be useful for practical applications, but pure mathematicians are not primarily motivated by such applications. (x)
///
Applied mathematics is the application of mathematical methods by different fields such as physics, engineering, medicine, biology, business, computer science, and industry. Thus, applied mathematics is a combination of mathematical science and specialized knowledge. (x)
Historically, applied mathematics consisted principally of applied analysis, most notably differential equations; approximation theory (broadly construed, to include representations, asymptotic methods, variational methods, and numerical analysis); and applied probability. These areas of mathematics related directly to the development of Newtonian physics, and in fact, the distinction between mathematicians and physicists was not sharply drawn before the mid-19th century. This history left a pedagogical legacy in the United States: until the early 20th century, subjects such as classical mechanics were often taught in applied mathematics departments at American universities rather than in physics departments, and fluid mechanics may still be taught in applied mathematics departments.[1] Quantitative finance is now taught in mathematics departments across universities and mathematical finance is considered a full branch of applied mathematics.[2] Engineering and computer science departments have traditionally made use of applied mathematics.
///
Additional Mathematics is a qualification in mathematics, commonly taken by students in high-school (or GCSE exam takers in United Kingdom). It is applied to a range of problems set out in a different format and wider content to the standard Mathematics at the same level. (x)
///
The following is waaaaay post-Brian’s days in schools, but I left it in in case anyone’s interested.
Further Maths IGCSE and Additional Maths FSMQ in England
Starting from 2012, Edexcel and AQA have started a new course which is an IGCSE in Further Maths. Edexcel and AQA both offer completely different courses, with Edexcel including the calculation of solids formed through integration,[3] and AQA not including integration.
AQA's syllabus mainly offers further algebra, with the factor theorem and the more complex algebra such as algebraic fractions. It also offers differentiation up to—and including—the calculation of normals to a curve. AQA's syllabus also includes a wide selection of matrices work, which is an AS Further Mathematics topic.
AQA's syllabus is much more famous than Edexcel's, mainly for its controversial decision to award an A* with Distinction (A^), a grade higher than the maximum possible grade in any Level 2 qualification; it is known colloquially as a Super A* or A**.
A new Additional Maths course from 2018 is OCR Level 3 FSMQ: Additional Maths (6993).[4] In addition to algebra, coordinate geometry, Pythagorean theorem, trigonometry and calculus, which were on the previous specification, this course also includes:
'Enumeration' content, which expands the topic of the binomial distribution to include permutations and combinations 'Numerical methods’ content, which expands upon the informal graphical approximations in GCSE 'Exponentials and Logarithms’ content, which develops the growth and decay content and the graphs section of GCSE 'Sequences' content, which uses subscript notation to support the iterative work on numerical methods.

Important tips to score high in JEE Advanced 2020
Know your JEE Advanced 2020 syllabus before starting with the preparation.
Understand the exam pattern of JEE Advanced and create preparation plan
Start waking up at the same time, and work towards a routine to ensure your body and mind gets tuned in to the pattern.
Start with NCERT and the refer other books for an in-depth understanding of the topics
Revise as much as you can by focussing on all the concepts you have learned. Questions in JEE-Advanced are more application based. So, make sure you practice a lot of application-based and conceptual questions.
Practice until you are perfect using mock tests and previous year papers. Previous years’ papers such as JEE Advanced 2019, JEE Advanced 2018, JEE Advanced 2017 Paper will prove to be a great tune-up!
Work on your strengths and try to master your weak areas in stuff like calculation errors, etc.
Take at least 7 hours of sleep but do not exceed 8 hours of sleep each day.
Stay relaxed yet focused while going for the JEE Advanced test. Nervousness can decrease the performance of even a student who has the potential to get a top rank in JEE.
No exam is difficult. It is only the approach that makes the difference of winner from a loser. Follow the above study techniques to score high in JEE Advanced and write your destiny.

IIT JEE EXAMS RESULT, PATTERN, CUTOFF, FEES.
Joint Entrance Examination – Advanced (JEE-Advanced), formerly the Indian Institutes of Technology-Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE), is an academic examination held annually in India.
JEE is a national level exam taken for the admission in B. Tech or B. E. and IIT is a chain of colleges, where you can study engineering or other courses. If you want admission in IIT in B. Tech then you must give JEE.
It is conducted by one of the seven zonal IITs (IIT Roorkee, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, and IIT Guwahati) under guidance of the Joint Admission Board (JAB). It is the sole prerequisite for admission in the Indian Institutes of Technology.
The first institute of IIT, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, started in 1951. In its initial few years (1951-1954), students were admitted on the basis of their academic results followed by an Interview in several centers across the country.
The IIT-JEE was conducted for the first time in 1961[4]when it had four subjects including an English language test. The examination since evolved considerably from its initial pattern. The IIT-JEE was initially called the Common Entrance Exam (CEE); its creation coincided with the 1961 IIT Act.[5]
JEE—(Joint Entrance Examination) is an Exam.
IIT- (Indian Institute of Technology) basically, IIT's are colleges.
IIT's has been the most prestigious colleges across the country in engineering field, every single student who dreams to become an engineer wants to do his engineering from such renowned colleges like IIT's.
Yes, you read that right! There are several IIT colleges in our country. If you are interested to write this exam you must read further things.
JEE Main is for those candidates who wish to get into BE or B.Tech courses in the National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), other Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs) and engineering colleges of the participating states. The JEE Main is also the eligibility test that allows students to give the JEE
Advanced exam which eventually leads to admission in either the IITs or the Indian School of Mines (ISM).
The JEE Main is comprised of two papers, namely, Paper 1 and Paper 2. The Paper 1 is for those who would want admission in BE and B.Tech courses and Paper 2 is for those who want admission in B.Arch and B.Planning courses. While Paper 1 is held via the online and offline mode, Paper 2 is held only offline. While applying for the JEE Main exam, the candidates must specify if they want to appear for Paper 1 or Paper 2 or both.
JEE Advanced, on the other hand, is strictly paper-based. The candidates must sit for both Paper 1 and Paper 2 in this exam to get admission into engineering courses.
PATTERN OF EXAMS
Mains is an exam of 360 marks. If you are aiming for 150 marks or less, as you mentioned in the question then I assume you are aware that with these marks-
You will most probably qualify to give jee advance. If you fail to qualify advance you will land up nowhere with these marks. Now coming back to your question-
If you are aiming for <150 score, then there are many chaps you can avoid and many you can focus on. They are -
PHYSICS
All chapters/lab manuals having topics related to errors and measurement and the expt.s prescribed in the mains syllabus Modern physics chapters - photoelectric effect and nuclear physics SHM Optics - geometrical optics as well as wave optics AC Chapters specially in mains, and not in advance like semiconductor physics, etc CHEMISTRY
p block groups - 15 to 18 d and f blocks Metallurgy Co-ordination compounds Electrochemistry Chemical kinetics Qualitative analysis (from lab manual) Chemical bonding Chemical equilibrium Thermodynamics Solid state Organic chemistry basics Biomolecules and chem. in everyday life MATHEMATICS
Matrices Permutations and combinations Probability Limits Complete calculus Basic trigonometry Vector - 3D Parabola These are most important topics for mains and you will mostly find a chapter for each topic in ncer. Also remember- every year about 250-300 marks questions can be answered just after reading ncert thoroughly. Pay special attention for chemistry and read the entire textbooks (all years) as last year the chemistry section derived heavily from the book.
Also, ncert material is the best to prepare for mains

One important change from 2019 is that the JEE (Main) examination will be conducted twice before admissions in the next academic session.
Candidates are not required to compulsorily take the test twice though if a candidate appears in both the tests, the better of the two scores will be considered.
The JEE (Main) is also an eligibility test for the JEE (Advanced), which the candidates can take if they are seeking admissions to the undergraduate programmes offered by
the institutes.

Exam preparation strategy of IBPS PO EXAM 2019  for engineering students
Tumblr media
According to the recent statistics done related to the academic background of the aspirants striving hard for Bank PO exams, it can be concluded that more than 50 per cent of the appearing candidates are from engineering background. Now, this may sound very strange but it’s true that every graduate aspires for a reliable Government banking job which offers job security and good salary packages. In IBPS PO competitive exam, millions of aspirants strive hard but just handful of them succeeds. In this article, we will primarily focus the important tips of preparing for SBI PO exam for engineering graduates.
Exam Pattern of IBPS PO exam
It will be conducted in three phases and once a candidate passes one stage, then he will be eligible for the next stage of screening. The components of the whole process are:
·         Preliminary Exam (Total Marks 100)
·         Mains Examination (Total Marks 250)
·         Group Discussion and Interview (Total Marks 50)
It should be noted that the marks obtained in the preliminary exam will not be counted for the final merit list. On the other hand, in order to prepare the final merit list, the marks obtained in the mains examination and the personal interview round will be taken into consideration.
In IBPS PO exam, there will be five topics namely:
1.     Quantitative Aptitude and data interpretation
2.     English Language
3.     Reasoning Ability
4.     General Awareness with main focus on the banking industry
5.     Computer Awareness
The topics of General Awareness and Computer Awareness will be there in the Mains Examination. The rest of the sections will be there in both the stages (Prelims and Mains) of the exam. In the mains examination, the candidate will have to appear in both objective English and descriptive English tests.
IBPS PO 2018: Preparation Guiding Tips
After understanding the exam pattern and syllabus of the exam, the next important aspect is to understand the subjects and the preparation strategy to crack the exam. Now, let us discuss guiding tips subject-wise:-
Data interpretation and Quant
It is believed that engineers are very good in Mathematics and so they should be very comfortable in Data Interpretation and Quant section. The Prelims exam will test their knowledge in Quant section whereas the Mains exam will check their knowledge in Data Interpretation section. Since, you are presumed to be good in these sections, so don’t be overconfidence and prepare these sections well and get effective bank Exam study material.
Reasoning Ability
The engineering graduates have good analytical and methodical ability. Therefore, it can be presumed that they have good command over the topics of Reasoning Ability section. To have a good overlook of the exam pattern and difficulty level of questions, you should try to refer and solve previous year papers. After preparing topics, you can attempt online mock tests to check your aptitude and understanding level. Once again, it is advisable that you should not be overconfidence but modest enough to prepare this section well.
English language
Broadly speaking, the section of English language comprises of two parts- Grammar and Vocabulary. You can refer to good books (Wren and Martin) to understand basic grammar rules. You can practice previous year papers as well as attempt online mock test papers. You should take each chapter extensively and practice them well. For preparing Vocabulary section, we would advise you to develop habit of reading daily English newspapers, books, novels etc and try to develop good reading speed. You should also list out typical and complex and try to find their synonyms and antonyms from dictionary. It will also help you in answering questions from Reading Comprehension topic. If you maintain this rhythm of learning and understanding for months then you will develop a strong word power which will also be of great help in your professional life.
 General Awareness and Computer
This section can be broadly divided into topics- Static General Knowledge, Banking Awareness and Current Affairs. The topics of GK and Banking Awareness can be prepared from books, daily newspapers, websites and other media sources and also through IBPS PO Coaching Nagpur. You should revise the studied concepts on regular basis. Keep yourself updated with latest political and social happenings worldwide. It will be easy for to prepare the Computer syllabus as you have studied concepts related to it in your college life. You should not be overconfident in it but try to recollect and revise all the procured and obtained knowledge with proper revision.
Group Discussion and Personal Interview
It is the last stage of the selection process. In Group discussion, you should always try to start the discussion and discuss the relevant topics about the given topic. You should not repeat the points and try to confront others with good logical reasoning. The personal interview round tests your temperament, patience and knowledge about yourself, banking and other relevant topics.  You should learn your bio data by heart. The interviewer will also test your knowledge about banking industry and its latest happenings. You should be polite, knowledgeable and patient in answering their questions.
After reading this article, we hope that all engineering graduate are well versed with the preparation tips to prepare for IBPS PO exam.
Follow these tips, prepare well and crack the exam!
