Clocks at our summer retreat
At our seasonal cottage located in central Canada, we enjoy displaying a small selection of clocks, during the summer months. The first clock, displayed for a number of years, was a Danial Dakota time and strike clock, which we had converted to a quartz movement. This clock, originating from the 1960s, incorporated Chinese design elements that were inspired by American clocks of that era. It…

German Box Clock Restoration | A Family Heirloom
When my wife’s parents sold their home in a small town in Nova Scotia in 1996, they passed on a wall clock, which had been given to my father-in-law by a patient and had hung on the wall in the main hallway of their home, to his son, my wife’s brother. It has been in storage ever since then. I hadn’t seen the clock in nearly 30 years though I have vivid memories. In the 1980s and 1990s, my wife…

Mauthe box clock - In clock repair, fine-tune adjustments are part of the experience
Mauthe box clock – In clock repair, fine-tune adjustments are part of the experience
Do you ever run into those situations working with clock movements when one little thing is so annoying? I recently serviced one of my box clocks, a Mauthe with a bim-bam strike. Everything went according to plan except for one small issue; the strike side was misbehaving. I’ll explain a little later but first something about the clock. German “box” clock by Mauthe Nowhere on this clock German…

Mauthe box clock movement servicing
Mauthe box clock movement servicing
It is time to service the movement on this mid-fourties German box clock. It was purchased at an antique mall in Peterborough, Ontario in May of 2017, and other than an oiling nothing has been done to it. While it has been running well since then, it is due for servicing. Plus, this little project is one of the many clock tasks that has kept me busy during the period of pandemic isolation.
There…

What is this thing for? #2 - the strike rod lock
What is this thing for? #2 – the strike rod lock
If you ever need to transport a German box clock or a similar style wall clock there are several steps you must take before you remove it from the wall.

One of these procedures is to secure the strike rods. The gong or strike rods are screwed into the gong block. If allowed to move during transport there is a risk…

Letting a newly serviced clock sit without running
Tumblr media
Mauthe time and strike German box clock
What happens if you service a clock and let it sit without running it? What happens if the clock is not run and stored for a year, does the oil dry out? Is it better to run the clock once a month to get the oil moving?  If the clock is sitting for a year should I refresh the oil before running the clock? These are all good questions. I will attempt to…
