I'm curious to hear your overall thoughts on the original Princess of Power.

While Filmation's He-Man had to come to an end, due to TV stations not being willing to pay for TV show episodes beyond 100, it was still a bold move to carry on Masters of the Universe in a girl-centric show.

From some of the interviews you've posted, it doesn't sound like Mattel Marketing had much faith in PoP, saying things like "Oh, she's a flanker brand: she'll succeed, increase gross doll sales, and when she stops selling after a couple of years Barbie will gobble up the increase."

It especially struck me in the interviews about the Star Sisters engineering how much more creativity and tooling money "action dolls" took than fashion dolls. It's a bummer to think of so much heart and intellect was being poured into something doomed to be short-lived.

She-Ra has of course had two limited revivals, in a (predominantly male) adult collector form for MotU Classics, with no action features and sculpted hair, and then as more conventional dolls when SPOP debuted, but being canceled after only a few characters.

So what do you think would be the ideal way to handle these characters?

my thoughts on the original? six words:

capitalism is the death of art.

i wrote like four thousand words about it but ultimately it boils down to Mattel ignoring market research because doing so was cheaper in the short term, which killed the original toylines & had already squashed Janice Varney-Hamlin’s original pitch for an action doll.

the same 1984 FCC repeal which allowed He-Man and She-Ra to have tv shows at all marked a sharp decline in 'gender neutral' toy advertising, which had been on the rise since the early 70s. In 1975, <2% of the Sears toy catalog was marketed to a specific gender. By 1995, it was nearly half--numbers that hadn't been seen since WWII.

By reinforcing binary gender norms, the toy industry is able to capitalize on specific play patterns (what was once ‘homemaking’ is now ‘disney princess’) and condition the market to accept pink taxes, and.

Okay I’m starting to rant again. Reining it in. No death threats this draft. Anyway Mattel killed both toylines by trying to maximize their profits & Filmation was doomed from the moment RankinBass realized it was cheaper to outsource animation to other countries. Hell, from the moment the SCG was formed. It’s so much cheaper to extract value from people you’ve fucking colonized and. uh.

MOTUC is its own can of worms for me. On the one hand, they didn't have the Filmation design rights until like 2012, so there are a lot of things they couldn't do, but the number of MOTU vs POP figures has always been disheartening. And the bios... it's gotten better since Penny Dreadful & gbagok have come aboard, since they're like human encyclopedia for MOTU lore, but in the early days, when Toyguru was in charge?

I should be nice but i’m still annoyed he’s making me check his youtube channel instead of just answering my questions like a normal person. what does “near future” even mean. When is “soon”??  i am currently disinclined to be charitable towards your lore, Scott! answer my riddles three or i start listing grievances!!!

The Dreamworks toys... honestly, I think the big failure there was marketing. For one thing, I never saw a single advertisement for them until I went trawling through the official Youtube channel (and that video put me off very quickly). And I can recognize that I'm not the intended demographic, you know? I’m like thirty years old & i’ve never been into dolls. Did kids like them?

My ideal toyline would have an emphasis on accuracy. Looking as on-model as possible. When I was a kid my favorite (non-stuffed) toys were those little pokemon figurines; articulation isn't really necessary for me as long as the figures can stand up by themselves. The Super7 toys were pretty good, I just wish they had more of them--or that they were sculpted in more interesting poses. But that line, too, suffered from a dearth of advertising. Who can buy these toys if they don't know they exist? Especially during the pandemic, when fewer people were willing to linger in the toy aisle and happen upon things--that's when you should be promoting shit. hell, put a bumper at the end of the episodes if you have to. as long as it was skippable idt there would be much flak for that, given we all signed up to watch a toy-based cartoon in the first place.

the type of toy i prize above all others, though? the kind of shit i went bananas for as a child & still delight in to this day?

toysets.

give me a crystal castle toyset with a little pocket guide on reading first ones' script. give me castle bright moon (WITH A MAP. PLEASE). a hordak's sanctum set that's the only way to get an imp figurine--kids love evil lairs & adults love collecting. a little Darla set that comes with spacesuits if the toys themselves are still Dolls.

but that’s not cost-effective. so. yeah

She-Ra World War I au, because I have played too much Battlefield 1

Catra, Entrapta, Scorpia, Kyle, Rogelio and Lonnie all crew a Mark V tank named Darla. Entrapta is constantly making improvements and repairs, as expected, so it’s not even comparable to a real Mark V anymore. Catra is the commander, Entrapta is the driver, Scorpia crews one sponson by herself because there’s no space for anyone else on that side (these things are very small inside), and the Horde Trio are on the other sponson.

Everyone carries custom guns made by Entrapta. Scorpia gets a carbine version of the Mars Automatic, chambered in .455 Webley Auto and with a stock. Catra has a C96 in 9x25mm Mauser Export with a stock and a snail mag. Kyle has an obrez, which are infamous for their high recoil and overall crappiness. Rogelio has a C93 with a stock and extended magazine, and Lonnie has a regular Luger P08 Artillery variant.

People keep asking about the guns, and Catra is so fed up with it that whenever someone asks, she shoots their helmet off with unerring precision

Scorpia is just as big and strong as she is in canon. She was introduced to the rest of the crew while carrying a 60lb Maxim gun with no effort. Entrapta made the Mars carbine as a gift for the Christmas Truce in 1914 because nothing else would fit in her hands.

Entrapta has a gas mask instead of a welding mask.

One of the carrier pigeons is named Emily, and she follows Entrapta everywhere, no matter how implausible it is for a pigeon to get there.

Entrapta constantly passes out while working on Darla because Mark Vs are notorious for their bad ventilation, and the fumes from the engine would gather in the cabin. Entrapta has been meaning to put in a better ventilation system, but she never gets around to it. Everyone else lets this happen because they assume the gas mask can filter out carbon monoxide. It can’t.

Hordak has to order nightly inspections of the tank to make sure Entrapta doesn’t die after passing out and being left with fumes for hours because no one checked on her

Entrapta later switches to a splatter mask because it offers better eye protection, and she didn’t really need a gas mask

The rebellion characters are mostly in an infantry squad together

Adora is still kind of she ra, because when they go into battle she puts on this

Bow and Perfuma are trans in this au

Bow only joined the army because Glimmer did, and when the physical examiner found out he was trans, Glimmer threatened him into giving Bow a clean bill of health

The unit is all women (except for Bow), in a similar concept to the Harlem Hellfighters

Perfuma joined as a conscientious objector, but every time they fight, she steals Frosta’s rifle and fights with it because Frosta is only 14 and Perfuma cannot restrain herself

Their unit is nicknamed the Princess Alliance. It’s meant to be derogatory, but they use it as a badge of honor

They have a rivalry with the Horde tank crew, to the point they are at war with each other as much as the enemy

Scorpia once threw an entire Maxim gun at Adora because she didn’t recognize her with the armor on, and she was unconscious for a full day

Adora later replaces her armor with something Entrapta made for her as a peace offering between their units, which is lighter and less bulky but more bulletproof because it’s made of better metal, and replaces her MG 08/15 with a Huot Automatic Rifle

I have more about this au, I will post it when I figure it out

Unfriendly reminder that Russia has committed warcrimes in Ukraine. They’re probably not going to be prosecuted for it because they’re a big country, and warcrimes are only ever prosecuted as a powertrip for the people who won the war. But just to keep a record, Russia has committed at least two separate offenses multiple times by my count:

Violating Sections 2(b)i, 2(b)ii, 2(b)iv, and 2(b)v of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court: Deliberately attacking civilians and civilian targets by bombarding cities with no plausible military target nearby, so they can’t just say they missed a military target and hit civilians by accident

Violating Section 2(b)ix of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court: Attacking hospitals and medical personnel, again by bombardment with no plausible military target nearby

And a third possible one the Russian military hasn’t done yet:

Using thermobaric weapons. I’m not sure if that is a warcrime, but it could be argued as one, due to the unusual method of killing falling under Section 2(b)xx   (Employing weapons, projectiles and material and methods of warfare which are of a nature to cause superfluous injury or unnecessary suffering). They have prepared them and are ready to use them as of Feb 26th 2022. Please spread this around so we can put public pressure on the US and International Criminal Court to prosecute the Russian military leaders and possibly Putin as well. My #1 post of 2022

I wonder how many times Razz has lived through the events of the show. When she meets Mara in Hero, she doesn't recognize that's the first time until Mara says she doesn't know her. She's been there and everywhere else so many times that she can't even remember which is which. And she always knows just what to say and just what to show Adora. How many times has she gone through it all? Watched everything fall apart and come back together again? Do you think she ever feels guilty for not having done better? Do you think she misses it, now the magic is there and she doesn't jump around? Was she even know which scene was the right one? Or which path she took to here? What does that do to her?

headcanon dump: yugito nii.

background: she's a product of kumogakure's "lost boy" culture. unlike other villages, kumogakure has an almost viking-like tradition of kidnapping children with potential and/or children in bad home situations, and there are entire teams dedicated to scoping out and retrieving potential assets. these teams are referred to by civilians as "sky children," "cranes," "takers," "magpies," or "crows" depending on how positively or negatively the respective civilian views them. this whisking away is seen as a "liberation" for the children and a useful acquisition for the village. by removing children from their families and having them raised with the village as their new family, it centers their loyalty around kumo. essentially, kumogakure practices the militarized version of found family/"family is who you choose, not who you are born to." having come from a neglectful household, yugito supports this culture and believes it is the best thing that ever happened to her.

last name: her family name, nii ("second place"), is not a family name at all, but a nickname that has stuck to her like a second name. kumogakure citizens do not have family names. outsiders overhear her being called nii and assume it's her surname. (her other nicknames include nekomata and bakeneko, two different but similar cat yokai.)

loyalty: she is deeply loyal to kumogakure. in the truest sense, kumogakure is her family. she loves the village and would do anything for it, including become the nibi jinchuuriki.

becoming a jinchuuriki: she volunteered to become matatabi's container shortly after she was whisked away to kumogakure. the takers scouted her due to her unique chakra system. due to a genetic mutation, yugito's chakra system is more porous than the average persons, meaning if some powerful chakra source -- for hypothesis' sake let's say a massive bijuu -- was stored inside her, she would have greater immediate access to the source, there would be more chakra bleed-through into her body, resulting in easier acclimation to the bijuu. kumogakure knew the importance of a jinchuuriki being connected physically, emotionally, and spiritually with their bijuu in order to maximize their abilities from dealing with Killer B, so when they found yugito and saw how even-tempered, loyal, and agreeable she was, they knew she was the right fit. her takers dropped hints about needing a new jinchuuriki, and loyal, adoring yugito volunteered (as much as a literal child can volunteer for such a thing anyway) to become the biju container at age three.

special abilities: all jinchuuriki possess special skills gained from their beast. yugito's include rapid regeneration, conflagration (spontaneous fire creation), enhanced feline acuity (nightvision, 200 degree peripheral vision versus a human's 180 degree periphery), enhanced olfactory system, unusually flexible backbone and feline reflexes, rapid keratin growth, chakra claws and steel claws, cat irises, the ability to understand cats, the odd premonition, and the ability to "see" or sense ghosts (okay, she doesn't know that they're ghosts and she has no intention of finding out because ghosts scare her, but sometimes she sees things no one else can see, and home girl doesn't know what the fuck to think about it. so she doesn't.)

general personality: intelligent, confident, loyal, proud, and tough. she has mentor/big sister energy and often takes young kunoichi under her wings. she is watchful and observant, decisive, and unmovable in her core values. she is generally cordial and amicable, and an overall calm, stable, straightforward, and warm presence.

general appearance: her eyes became heterochromatic and reflective (thanks tapetum lucidum!) after receiving matatabi. they glow dimly when using matatabi's unique spectral blue fire. she's 5'10 and muscular: broad shoulders, defined arms and back, rippling muscles. she's much more of a tiger than a house cat (think she-ra adora from spop.) the lapis beads worn around her arm are condensed nodes of matatabi's fire.

fun fact: she's allergic to cats. :)

I mean I'm okay with how it ended since...She-Ra really isn't a big world building show. It's a relationship show, the world/lore is just kinda, there when it's needed until it's not. It's the relationships that count and in Season 5 I think most of the relationships are all nicely rounded out. Entrapdak was endgame Seamista was Endgame, Scorfuma was more or less Endgame and of course Catradora (Game changer for queer rep in kids television) was defiantly Endgame.

Mm, I would agree.

I think, in the end, SPoP’s biggest weakness relationship-wise and character-wise, for me, was Catradora. 

Not the relationship itself, but the level of focus that it received. And obviously, that’s unlikely to be a popular view; the representation it offers is beloved by many, and I definitely do not begrudge them that. And, well, SPoP was designed to be The Catradora Show.

But at the same time, the SPoP staff ended up creating so many compelling characters with so many interesting relationships. The heavy Catradora focus inevitably took away from those characters. Of course I mean Hordak in this, because I always mean Hordak, but it’s not just him. Scorpia got heavily sidelined in season five. So did Double Trouble. 

So while I appreciate what Catradora has achieved, I wish that it could have achieved it while still allowing some other characters added screentime. Just so everyone could be maximally happy, y’know?

But ah well. One cannot have everything. And there is always fanfiction!

Hello there, my name is Fonda. I’ve been apart of the SPOP fandom since the reboot aired but fondly remember the 1985 cartoon as luckily, I “retro” TV channels were a thing. I was the solo mod for the Fairy Tail Nakama, and I am currently planning a Allurance fanzine to launch in 2019. I was an artist on 4 other fanzines within the following fandoms; Miraculous Ladybug, Naruto, and Fairy Tail.

The reason I like Catra and Adora, as friends, enemies and as a romantic pair is because they as stand alone characters are not just defined by one another, but they both at the same time have had a huge impact on one another throughout season 1, especially Catra.

I love Catra and Adora’s relationship because it’s so complex. It’s not perfect by any means, but the way they interact and think about their past make it apparent that they care for each other, even if it is confusing with how it is now as they grow as individuals. The relationship is twisted and tangled due to many factors, but I hope that things will get better in some way. They’ve loved each other as friends before, and I hope that they still love each other enough to come to a mutual understanding of their relationship, whatever that may be.

Hello! My name is Noah or Fricz, I’m currently in a lot of fandoms being some of them YoI, VLD, Banana Fish and of course SPOP! I’m an animator and illustrator and my biggest dream ever is to become a concept artist and storyboard artist; I have previous experience being mod (particularly of Voltron zines) so I wish to bring my experience to this zine and learn a lot more.

I deeply enjoy Adora and Catra’s relationship because it feels real for me, it’s a friendship you can easily find in real life, making it easy to understand their personalities, I like how it portraits how it feels to grow up and how unavoidably friendship will change with it and how said friendship can overcome the change or how it’ll break. So yes, I like the complexity involving these girls and their relationship.

Hey, I’m Shanimal! I’ve dipped my toes in many a fandom, but magical fantasy has always been one if my favorite genres. Right now She-Ra and The Adventure Zone are at the top of my list, with shows like Voltron: Legendary Defender and Steven Universe close behind. Catra and Adora are one of my favorite dynamics in the show. As childhood friends turned adversaries, their relationship is wonderfully layered and complex, and I can’t wait to see how it plays out in future seasons!

She-Ra is a very nostalgic show for me. I love the reboot and the new twist it places on the characters and their relationships. For Catra and Adora specifically, to me their bond is something stronger than friendship but perhaps hard to define. They’ve experienced the worst and the best together, and now the state of the world is placing them on opposite ends of a war. I think they’re dynamic is complex, exciting, and worth exploring. The energy they have together is unlike any other!

{ ! } - Messed around and actually fleshed out a full SPOP au for not only P-M but my other muse as well, Maxime, with a few friends of mine. Haven’t made the au page for P-M yet so quick introduction if any SPOP/SPOP au muns wanna interact:

P-M’s a little winged lad, same wing placement as usual, I haven’t seen any birdfolks in the show (tell me if there are tho) so I’d assume either her species is very recluse or it’s not native to Etheria. Only thing set in stone about her is that by the end of season 5 she is 5 years old (I go by the theory Spop takes place over 3 years). Little lass can use very rudimentary magic, should have gone to Mystacor but whoever her parents are didn’t get the chance to send her.
