Our University of the Week – Ashesi University, Ghana. In the 2022 Ashesi University Commencement Ceremony, a member of the Open Dreams Community, Ndze’dzenyuy Lemfon Karl was one of three graduating students who received the President's Award for Scholarship, Leadership and Citizenship. This award, the highest award a student can receive at Ashesi, is presented to graduating students who have exemplified the University’s values. Click on this youtube link for a presentation from Karl, the valedictorian - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ne4hpihbOZk Some members of Open Dreams studying at Ashesi University are contributing enormously to our thriving community, taking lead-roles in our summer and academic mentorship programs and also engaging in tech-initiatives like PremierDev Technology Solution Challenge (https://www.premierdev.org/) for University Students in Cameroon – an initiative aimed at upskilling young Africans to find software solutions to the continent's most pressing challenges. A good number of them are involved in summer internship programs in parts of Africa, Europe and North America, and through them we see innovation, ethical and selfless leadership at work as they contribute their input in shaping our community. Members of our team back in Cameroon over the week have been visiting higher institutions of learning, particularly schools of engineering in Buea (University of Buea), Douala (University of Douala), Yaounde (Polytechnic Yaounde), Bafoussam and Bamenda (University of Bamenda) to present the Ashesi ETH Mechatronics Master’s Programme in Mechatronics Engineering, which encompasses a range of technologies that empower a variety of daily life applications ranging from automation of household equipment to “smart” manufacturing, self-driving cars, surgical robots and robotic space exploration. Visit this link for more - https://www.ashesi.edu.gh/admissions/masters-in-mechatronics-engineering/ashesi-eth-welcome.html . Application deadline: June 30th 2022. (Field visits conducted by Program Facilitators Bill Njoh, Shuyika Henry, Ralp Abine, Che Desmond, Emmanuel Ngolefac, Killan, Teh Emmanuel, Micah, Evita Afungfege, Joy Mambo, Nchofon https://www.instagram.com/p/CeecFjipYrp/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Girl Power Science relies on diligence, ingenuity, etc and these traits are not Gender-based. On Sunday, January 9th 2022, Open Dreams Scholar, Eng. Miki Limnyuy, took off from Yaoundé to Ghana for the inaugural Ashesi-ETH Zürich Mechatronics Engineering Program. Miki is a fresh graduate from the National Advanced School of Engineering, Polytechnic Yaoundé. She previously scored 25/25 points at the GCE Advanced Level Examination and carried on with the tradition of excellence in scholarship, leadership and community engagement while a student at Polytechnic Yaoundé and a scholar at Open Dreams. She learnt about Open Dreams in 2018 at an event organized in their school, Polytechnic Yaounde, by Open Dreams and a MasterCard Foundation Team from the University of Pretoria, South Africa. The fully-funded Master's Program, which equips students with competences in emerging fields and a wide range of skills to pursue a career in Mechatronics (Production and Automation) is delivered at Ashesi University by faculty from Ashesi and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, ETH Zurich, and seven industry partners. Students who graduate from the program receive both a Master of Science Degree in Engineering from Ashesi and a Master of Advanced Studies Degree from ETH Zurich. Miki, a strong advocate of Girls in STEM, is one of the role models of the Girl Power at Open Dreams. She makes science fun in her community engagements in an effort to reduce the massive disparity in the number of girls going in for STEM careers compared to boys. According to a 2020 AAUW Report, Women make up only 28% of the workforce in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), and men vastly outnumber women majoring in most STEM fields in college. The gender gaps are particularly high in some of the fastest-growing and highest-paid jobs of the future, like Computer Science and Engineering. Through the "Association des filles de Polytechnique Yaoundé" (ADENSPY ), Association of Anglophone Students of Polytechnic Yaounde (ASPY), Targeted Education For All, Open Dreams etc Miki regularly reached out to many young engineering aspirants, teaching Math and Physics for engineering https://www.instagram.com/p/CYmClHsgqBS/?utm_medium=tumblr
