With the goal of continuously elevating guest service experience and recovery, the Department of Tourism, conducted the Filipino Brand of Service Excellence Training program simultaneously across Megaworld Hotels and Resorts’ (MHR) 6 brands and 12 property locations across the Philippines all in one day. Without a doubt, the hotel industry is at the forefront of commercial trades with a high level of service and an eye for detail. Faced with the daily pressures to conduct seamless events and thoughtful experiences, Cleofe Albiso, the Managing Director of the Philippines’ largest hospitality management chain says, “Megaworld Hotels and Resorts continues to invest on its people and envisions a breed of empowered champions that will help guests win the day’s challenges”.

A total number of about 400 associates finished modules covering Service Excellence and the 7Ms of Filipino Values, Delivering Excellent Service using the GUEST Techniques, and the HEART of Service Recovery. Participating hotels included Savoy Hotel and Belmont Hotel in Newport Pasay Manila, Kingsford Hotel at the Entertainment City of Paranaque, Eastwood Richmonde Hotel in Quezon City, Richmonde Hotel Ortigas in Pasig, Hotel Lucky Chinatown in Binondo and Twin Lakes Hotel near Tagaytay. Cebu based properties who also joined in were Savoy Hotel and Belmont Hotel in Mactan Newtown. In the Panay region were Boracay properties like Savoy Hotel and Belmont Hotel at the Boracay Newcoast and Richmonde Hotel Iloilo located at the Iloilo Business Park in Mandurriao.

Accredited trainers from DOT Metro Manila were Gil Regondola, Maria Susanna F. Edilo, Lax Junnel Mendoza with the supportive presence of Regional Director Sharlene Batin. Cebu properties were handled by Dr. Evelyn Lupango under the leadersship of Regional Director Shahlimar Hofer Tamano. While Dr. Mae Panes and Boracay properties by Bryan John Dizon conducted trainings for Western Visayas properties under the leadership of RD Crisanta “Krisma” Rodrigez. Having the same mindset, the Department of Tourism aims to reach the goal of achieving 100,000-trained tourism service providers in the country in 2023. MHR’s Group Director of People Management and Development, Ms. Divinagracia delos Reyes, is now working on the succeeding batches to achieve 100% training compliance for all employees.

Kingsford Cafe is a Hidden Culinary Gem in Kingsford Hotel Manila

It had been a while since my last visit to Kingsford Cafe, so I was happy to be invited last week to rediscover this hidden culinary gem inside Kingsford Hotel Manila. I usually indulge in their themed weekend dinner buffets, but this time we were here to explore some of the unique and creative dishes on their a la carte menu.

Kingsford Hotel Manila is part of the growing lineup of homegrown Filipino hotel brands under Megaworld Hotels and Resorts. It’s located at Bagong Nayong Pilipino, just beside Okada Manila and right in the middle of the bustling Entertainment City. Since it's opening in late 2021 (Kingsford Café Opens Its Doors at Kingsford Hotel Manila), the hotel has been a popular choice for businessmen and travelers looking for a relaxing stay just minutes away from the NAIA airport terminals.

You can find Kingsford Café at the ground floor lobby serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus. The café comes with a refreshing and relaxing ambiance. Its contemporary design and cozy interiors are complemented with beautiful wall art pieces.

The restaurant can accommodate up to 128 guests with dedicated seats available for alfresco dining. Guests may also dine privately with sectioned dining spaces ideal for intimate corporate events and other social gatherings.

We were delighted to once again meet Kingsford Café’s Executive Chef Angelo Chubby Timban, a well adorned champion in international cooking competitions and celebrated for his creativity and passion for the craft. Staying close to his roots, Chef Chubby’s dishes pay homage to a strong Filipino upbringing but redefined through modern European techniques alongside contemporary Asian executions. The concept is to celebrate the rich produce of the Philippines and its multicultural influences by featuring nostalgic local flavors to capture the heart of every guest.

Last year, Chef Chubby had created a very special Sampaguita Menu which features dishes inspired and infused with our national flower, the Sampaguita. This also includes Sampaguita beverages like the SaMaRRa (P320) on the left, a refreshing Sampaguita tea combined with mango juice, tarragon leaves, peppermint leaves, and vanilla extract. On the other hand, the Paraw Regatta (P280) is a cocktail named after the annual Iloilo sailboat festival featuring the Paraw. It comes with Jasmine tea, vodka, mango juice, blue curaçao, and grenadine.

It was then time to try some of the featured signature dishes in Kingsford Café's a la carte menu. I've always been amazed at Chef Chubby's presentation and flavors, but we were really surprised with the new lineup that looks more appropriate inside a five-star fine dining restaurant instead of a casual dining cafe.

We started with one of their bestsellers, the Kingsford Laksa (P300). This is a modern presentation of the Singaporean laksa with its creamy laksa broth poured over a medley of shrimp, bean sprouts, crisp miki noodles, young corn and straw mushrooms. It's a different experience from the traditional laksa, especially with the crispy noodles, but the overall flavors of the fragrant laksa are still very much present.

My favorite and best new discovery that afternoon was the Kare-Kareng Bagnet (P450). This lovely deconstructed Kare-kare dish comes with crispy fried pork belly doused in a rich peanut and annatto sauce. It also has steamed lowland vegetables and served with slow cooked ginamos.

I really loved the crunchy chicharron together with the juicy and savory pork belly. This is one of the best versions of Kare Kare I have ever tasted and I would gladly come back to Kingsford Cafe just for this alone.

We also wanted to sample some of their special Sampaguita Menu, so we ordered the Gambas Royale (P580). This dish has big pieces of prawn al ajillo presented with Lucban risotto, soffits, asparagus, sampaguita, and mango salsa. It's not your usual Spanish-type gambas as it has less of the garlicky flavors but is more savoury and balanced, especially with the risotto and vegetables.

On the other hand, the Bistek Tagalog (P500) is a twist on the traditional Filipino dish. This one comes with thick and fatty roasted beef belly with grilled cauliflower, roasted rustic potatoes, monggo and sampaguita caviar in a caramelized calamansi and lacuna jus sauce. I've never seen Bistek Tagalog served this way but we really enjoyed this thicker, meatier, and more flavorful version.

For desserts, we also tried two of their colorful Sampaguita items that really put a big smile on my face.

The Sakura Brazo de Mercedes (P300) is as pretty as they get. This has a mixed berry mousse cake on the bottom topped with a cherry micro sponge and chocolate branch with edible soil. Usually, you can only find this type of presentation in fine dining restaurants, so I was really impressed that they serve this here at a very reasonable price. Imagine going on a date and being served this dessert. You will really be going home happy.

But that's not all, because I was even more impressed with the Mango Sampaguita Cheesecake (P320). I have eaten so many cheesecakes before but this was one of the best versions I have ever tasted! This deconstructed cheesecake is made with Sampaguita cream cheese, mango jelly, blueberry, and edible soil. The sweet cheesecake tasted like my favorite Hokkaido milk, so I really loved finishing this splendid dish.

MANILA – Conglomerate Alliance Global Group, Inc. (AGI) chalked up a 14-fold improvement in its third-quarter profit to PHP2.2 billion from PHP156 million in the second quarter, boosted by the gradual easing of community quarantines throughout the country and the further reopening of the economy.

 This brings AGI’s net income for the first nine months to PHP6.4 billion, reflecting a 67-percent decline from PHP19.3 billion the year before. 

 Consolidated revenues also fell by 28 percent to PHP91.8 billion from last year’s PHP127 billion.   

 “We are very encouraged by the sharp improvement in earnings across all our business segments during the third quarter as the economy gets a reboot with the further easing of the quarantine restrictions. Our interim performance also validated the soundness of our diversification strategy as evidenced by the strong results delivered by our international liquor operations even amidst the global pandemic,” AGI’s chief executive officer Kevin Tan said in a statement Friday. 

   The Andrew Tan-led conglomerate has varied interests in real estate developments through property giant Megaworld Corp.; leisure, entertainment, and hospitality through Travellers International Hotel Group, Inc.; spirits manufacturing through Emperador, Inc.; quick-service restaurants through Golden Arches Development Corp. (GADC), popularly known as McDonald’s Philippines, which is a strategic partnership with the George Yang Group; and infrastructure developments through Infracorp Development Corp. 

 “We are optimistic that we can maintain this sequential improvement following the trajectory of the economy, which we expect to slowly improve,” Tan said.

 He said they continue to help rebuild consumer confidence by assuring stakeholders of the safe live, work, and play environment in their townships.  

 “In support of this objective, we have advanced our implementation of a digitalization strategy – through cashless and contactless transactions, E-concierge for our hotel operations, customer service, account management, and efficient delivery applications – in order to hasten the pace of our transition to this new normal,” Tan added.

 Megaworld, the country’s leading township developer, booked a 42-percent decline in profit in the January to September period to PHP7.4 billion from PHP12.8 billion a year before. 

 Emperador’s net income jumped by 11 percent, year on year, to PHP5.9 billion in the nine-month period.

 Travellers International, the owner and operator of Resorts World Manila, reported a net loss of PHP5.4 billion, reversing last year’s net income of PHP786 million.  

 The GADC registered a net loss of PHP967 million in nine months from a net profit of PHP1.2 billion the year before.

 Its operations in the third quarter got a boost from the reopening of the economy, bringing its sales revenues higher by 52 percent, quarter on quarter, to PHP4.5 billion. (PR)

 The first resort airport in the world – Mactan-Cebu International Airport.

 •             Being the 2nd biggest international gateway in the Philippines, it will be undergoing a major expansion to become the first resort airport in the world with a capacity to accommodate 12.5 million passengers per year from its current 4.5 million and with increased direct flights connecting major cities in the world. The expansion project of the new terminal is scheduled to complete in 2018 while the improvement on the existing terminal will be completed in 2019.

 •             The 3rd Mactan Bridge – Cebu-Cordova Bridge.

 •             This 8.25 kilometer tollroad will connect SRP to Cordova town in Mactan. This bridge will help decongest the traffic in the two existing bridges and decrease the travel time for vehicles travelling from southern Cebu to Mactan and vice versa. This promising project is scheduled to start mid-2018 and its facility completed in 2020.

 •             Mass Public Transport – Cebu Bus Rapid Transit System

 •             It will be the first operational bus rapid transit system in the Philippines with its first implementation done in Cebu City and later on expand to Mandaue City, Talisay City, Lapu-Lapu City and soon to be integrated into the 300 hectare South Road Properties, a developing mega-township in Cebu. The first phase spanning 11 kilometers will start from Bulacao to Ayala with segregated busways and terminals along its path. The second phase will reach Talamban with an additional 6 kilometer distance. The project will start end of 2016 and the first route scheduled to be operational by the end of 2018.

Modernization and Relocation of the Cebu International Container Port

 •             Central Visayas has experienced massive economic expansion lately which created the need to relocate the Cebu International Container Port into a bigger 25 hectare property situated in Tayud, Consolacion and decongest the old container port in Cebu City. This project is envisioned to become a modern international container port that can sustain the demands of Cebu’s growing economy. It will start its implementation by 3rd quarter of 2017 and to be completed 2nd quarter of 2020.

 •             Proposed Cebu-Bohol Friendship Bridge

 If the proposed Cebu-Bohol Friendship Bridge is implemented, it will spur big economic impact in both provinces and this will complement the 3rd Mactan Bridge. Cebu and Bohol are well-known for its beaches, natural landmarks and cultural heritage which can spark increased tourism revenues. This bridge is proposed to pass through Cordova town and into Jetafe, Bohol with a 17 kilometer distance and if this will materialize, developers are encouraged to establish villages in Bohol to accommodate the workers in Mactan Economic Zones, hotel chains and world class resorts in Mactan.

•             Proposed Iloilo-Guimaras-Negros-Cebu Link Bridge

 The plan, tagged to be the most ambitious bridge program in the Philippines, is to connect four islands in the Visayas which is Iloilo, Guimaras, Negros and Cebu. The distance of these bridge-links will range from two to 10 kilometers and this will allow people to travel to Iloilo-Cebu on land. This initiative is part of the administration’s plan to spread the developments and spur growth across the Philippines and decongest Manila. More information will be released next year with the plan to complete this mega project within 6 years.

 Commercial & Economic Expansions

 Cebu is often regarded as the most strategic location outside Manila to start or expand a business because of its geographical advantage. MANILA – Andrew Tan-led Alliance Global Group, Inc. (AGI) on Friday reported its net profit reached PHP4.1 billion in the first half of 2020, down by 67 percent from PHP12.5 billion during the same period last year. 

 Consolidated revenues fell 26 percent to PHP61.4 billion from last year’s PHP82.8 billion, as the conglomerate faces the hurdles caused by the coronavirus pandemic that affected most of its businesses. 

 “The country’s strict two-month lockdown weighed heavily on most of our domestic operations. We take comfort from the fact that we have managed to diversify our sources of income, either by type of products or by geographic contribution, and this has helped us mitigate the impact of this pandemic on our group performance,” AGI chief executive officer Kevin Tan said in a statement.

 The conglomerate has varied interests spanning real estate developments through property giant Megaworld Corporation; leisure, entertainment and hospitality through Travellers International Hotel Group, Inc.; spirits manufacturing through Emperador Inc.; quick-service restaurants through Golden Arches Development Corporation (GADC), popularly known as McDonald’s Philippines, which is a strategic partnership with the George Yang Group; and infrastructure developments through Infracorp Development Corporation.

 In the first six months of the year, Megaworld posted a 33-percent decline in attributable net income to PHP5.4 billion from PHP8.1 billion a year before. 

 Consolidated revenues fell 25 percent year-on-year to PHP23.8 billion, as the strict community quarantine weighed on mall rentals, real estate sales, and hotel revenues. 

 Office rentals, however, grew 10 percent to PHP5.6 billion, proving anew its dominance and stronghold in the country’s office sector as it catered mostly to the more resilient business process outsourcing (BPO) industry.

 Emperador, the world’s biggest brandy producer and owner of the world’s fifth-largest Scotch whiskey manufacturer, recorded a 2-percent year-on-year improvement in attributable profit to PHP3.3 billion in the first half this year. 

 Meanwhile, the ongoing community quarantine, which put a temporary halt in casino gaming operations, has taken its toll on Travellers International. 

 The owner and operator of Resorts World Manila (RWM) recorded a net loss of PHP3.7 billion in the first half this year, a reversal from its PHP845-million net income the year before. 

 The community quarantine also significantly affected GADC’s operations which saw its bottom line post a loss of PHP709 million in the first half this year, reversing the profit of PHP751-million the year before. 

 At the start of the lockdown, only about 38 percent of the McDonald’s stores were operational, while activities were limited to take-out, drive-through, and delivery services as dining-in was not allowed. 

 “This global health crisis has brought us new learnings. We have modified our product offerings and acquired new skills to adapt to the changes in consumer behavior. Likewise, our move to transform our operations under a digital strategy, an undertaking we have started only last year, has supported most of our businesses especially during the strictest period of the community quarantine,” Tan said.
