Quick chat with soprano Mellissa Hughes
Jet-setting soprano Mellissa Hughes gives us the scoop on her airplane entertainment preferences, favorite Lincoln Center memory, and the big choice in life: Mickey Mouse or Micky Rourke. Don't miss her as she makes a stop at Lincoln Center's American Songbook on March 20th.
The Coda: You're on your way to Australia at this very moment—what're you listening to/reading on the journey?
Mellissa Hughes: I actually didn't read anything on my way to Australia. This is because I've cut myself off from buying books. I read really, really fast, so I recently joined an online book subscription thing, but the choices aren't great, so I'll probably cancel it. I did watch a lot of movies on the plane though. I feel like I'm licensed to watch anything I want when I'm in the air. I once watched Oceans Eleven, Twelve, and Thirteen straight through on a flight from JFK to Moscow.
I'm currently about 22 hours into this crazy journey, in the middle of my last layover in Sydney and listening to How to Dress Well. I met Tom, the vocalist back in October at BAM where I was singing vocals for a project about the history of electronic music that QuestLove put together. Tom has a crazy beautiful voice, and I really like the way his tracks are paced out.
TC: Mickey Mouse or Mickey Rourke: Who would you choose as your sole companion on a desert island for all of eternity?
MH: Mickey Mouse or Rourke. Seriously, these are my only options? Slim pickings. I guess I'd go with Rourke because I'd love to talk to him about working with EVERYONE from Sin City, and because I can handle about sixty seconds of Mickey Mouse's laugh before I start to see red.
TC: You'll be with us at Lincoln Center very soon! Do have a favorite memory of Lincoln Center or favorite place in the neighborhood?
MH: Favorite memory of Lincoln Center. I think my favorite memory of Lincoln Center doesn't have anything to do with any particular performance. One Friday afternoon I was with my son Jackson. He was still very young, probably four or five. He was running near the fountain right when the fountain turned on, and that made him so happy. It somehow wasn't crowded and still light out, and he was just laughing and running around chasing the water. It was one of those rare New York moments that are hard to recreate.
