WHAT TO DO IN CAIRO, EGYPT (and fall in Love with the Pyramids of GIZA and its being an “Organized Chaos” City)
Cairo, being the heart of Egypt, is one of the must see cities all over the world not only because of the Pyramids of Giza most specially the Pyramid of Cheops, the Great Sphinx but also the Egyptian Museum! It is like ‘time travel’ during ancient times. You will be engulfed in the richness of the culture and history of Egypt. Your jaw will really drop when you see a real mummy: Royal Mummies! Everything that you've learned in your History books come alive in front of you especially the Pharaohs!
We stayed in Le Meridien Pyramids Hotel and Spa overlooking the pyramid. Every hotel all over Egypt has their mandatory security check upon entering so you will really feel safe. Also in every airport, there is mandatory removal of shoes for machine scanning (so try to wear shoes that are easy to remove and to put in).
But first things first, breakfast! The International Breakfast Buffet of Le Meridien is soooo satisfying!
I love their Fresh Pita Bread that reminds me of Manna from Heaven :)
1. A MUST to go inside the Great Pyramid of Giza
PYRAMIDS of Giza are built for 2 reasons: Firstly, to solve the unemployment rate that time. Secondly, as tombs most specially for Pharaohs. Cheops is the first to sort out the unemployment rate during his reign by building the pyramid. The Great Pyramid of Giza is known as Pyramid of Cheops. It is the largest pyramid ever built in Egypt. It is 760 ft square, and the sides diverge from the average length only by a maximum of 4 1.4 in.
Giza has a total of 6 Pyramids. The Three Main Pyramids are tombs for Cheops, his son (Khafre) and grandson (Menkaura).
Pyramids are made of limestone.
Pyramid up-close: limestones piled and arranged in a triangle shape.
The positively superhuman monumentality of the great pyramids has not only impressed posterity ever since classical antiquity but has repeatedly raised the questions of their functions and the way which they were built.
Curious on how the pyramid looks inside?
You must be physically prepared to climb inside the Great Pyramid as it requires strength, stamina and endurance to squat while walking, duck walk as the walkway and staircases are narrow.
Inside the pyramid is dark and hot due to lack of ventilation and because of "exercise" upon reaching to the top: The burial chamber, measuring 33 x 17 ft and was built enitrely of red granite.
Imagine how do Egyptians build this? It is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! Only in Egypt. One of a kind :)
2. Camel ride for 30 minutes in all the Pyramids of Giza :)
Camel can last in the desert for 10 days.
How beautiful camel’s hump is! Strong creature that can endure heat, cold, hunger, thirst for several days...
3. Great Sphinx
The figure of the Great Sphinx was worked from a rocky outcrop. The colossal sculpture (240 x 65 1/2 ft; 73.5 x 20 cm) of Chepren faces east, and show the classic combination of the body of a recumbent lion with the pharaoh’s head. the ruler wears the striped nemes headcloth, and has a uraeus worn flat on his forehead.
Kissing the Great Sphinx? Oh Yes!
Urban legend said the Sphinx’s nose was broken by an Egyptian or Alexander the Great. But that’s only a theory.
4. Forget the present and travel back in time in Egyptian Museum
The National Egyptian Museum, which today contains the largest and the most important of all collections of Egyptian antiquities, with well over 150,000 objects.

Coffins and Sarcophagus
One of the exhibits in the Museum are Tutankhamun and all his treasures found in the tomb at the Valley of the Kings!
As early as 6 years old, He became the youngest Pharaoh who ruled Egypt.
Did you say Gold?
Pure Alabaster Jar
Too bad you can’t take pictures in the Royal Mummies :(
Inside the Royal Mummies is mesmerizing! Actual Mummies of Ramesses I, II, III and many others. Seeing the hair, skull, nails, teeth intact is beyond amazing.
5. TRY Egyptian foods :)
I thought i cannot eat them but surprisingly, I love it :)
The authentic Egyptian Restaurant is truly recommended!
6. Hanging Church
The Hanging Church is also referred to as the Suspended Church or Al-Moallaqa. It is a Coptic Orthodox Church dedicated to Virgin Mary. It is also called the Church of the Virgin Mary.
It is called the Hanging Church because it was built on the southern gate of the Roman Fortress. Logs of palm trees and layers of stones were constructed above the ruins of the Roman fortress to be used as a fundament. The Hanging Church is a unique church and has a wooden roof in the shape of Noah’s ark.
Entrance Leading to the Hanging Church
Enchanting!
Icons are fitted into the upper part of this screen, showing Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary, the archangels, Michael and Gabriel, and Sts. Peter, Paul, and John the Baptist.
Before you reach the church, you will see a lot of beautiful buildings with history revealing itself...
JUST A FEW TIPS TO TAKE NOTE OF.
a. Don't buy souvenirs in Cairo if you’re also going to other places in Egypt such as Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab, Aswan, Luxor and other provinces of Egypt because it is definitely more expensive in Cairo by 2x and 3x. Beware of the hasslers telling you that they are selling you the items in 1 usd when in fact they will corner you to get more money as they target tourists. Use your charm in bargaining. It works! Be a wise buyer. (Dahab is the best place to buy precious stones such as Sapphire, Amethyst, Jade etc.; Aswan for Oils and Essences.)
b. Tipping is a must in Cairo. Although its optional but majority are asking you tips upfront even the cleaners in the toilets who will hand-over the tissue when in fact it is for free. It is a polite way of saying you enjoyed someone’s service by tipping. Break your money in lower notes like 5, 10, 20 LE (Egyptian Pound) so you would not overspend in Tipping alone.
c. Also, bring extra money in USD or EUROS unless you want to use your Debit Card/Credit Card for shopping (I noticed that the exchange rate is better actually in using a bank card). They only recognize few currencies in the money changer. Just bring extra USD or Euros for convenience in order not to have so much excess Egyptian Pounds when you go back home. By the way, they accept USD as payment but i think their conversion from USD to LE (Egyptian Pound) is lower. The best Payment is in Egyptian Pound when you are buying stuffs.
d. Governmental Shops recognized by Ministry of Tourism are ubiquitous. Better buy there, a little bit expensive but they offer quality and for safety and authenticity when you buy papyrus paper and arts, cartouche, gold, silver, pure oils/essenses (such as Eucalyptus oil, Musk oils), stones (which are actually cheaper in Dahab). Ask help from your guide if they are selling you a good price.
e. Traffic in CAIRO is madness. Its unpredictable. You can be stucked in traffic for 3 hours. So give about 2-3 hours travel time allowance going to the airport just to make sure you can make it to your flight. Driving in Cairo is truly for professional drivers because there are no traffic rules which the local termed as “ORGANIZED CHAOS”.
Other than the TIPS to PONDER, the experience in Cairo is priceless and incomparable.
You should include this in your bucket list. Not only it is included in the 7 wonders of the world but what you will see here, you’ll never find elsewhere. I can assure you! ONLY IN EGYPT
