The Whirlpool Galaxy

The Whirlpool Galaxy is actually two galaxies in the process of colliding. It consists of NGC-5194, the main spiral galaxy at the centre, and NGC-5195, the smaller round galaxy colliding with the long spiral arm at 6 o’clock in the picture. At 7 million light years distance, it is nearby on a cosmic scale, but it is not part of our Local Group.

It is interesting to note the distortion of the normally uniform symmetrical shape of a classic open spiral galaxy, likely caused by the unusual gravitational forces experienced during the collision.

The Whirlpool Galaxy is a favourite target for amateurs, because it is big, bright, and interesting. The challenge is to capture the faint cloud of dust and gas at the point of collision.

I photographed the Whirlpool Galaxy from my garden in Strasbourg France in May 2024. This is an aggregate of 48 photos where each was a three minute exposure.

Explanation: An intriguing pair of interacting galaxies, M51 is the 51st entry in Charles Messier's famous catalog. Perhaps the original spiral nebula, the large galaxy with whirlpool-like spiral structure seen nearly face-on is also cataloged as NGC 5194. Its spiral arms and dust lanes sweep in front of a companion galaxy (right), NGC 5195. Some 31 million light-years distant, within the boundaries of the well-trained constellation Canes Venatici, M51 looks faint and fuzzy to the eye in direct telescopic views. But this remarkably deep image shows off stunning details of the galaxy pair's striking colors and extensive tidal debris. A collaboration of astro-imagers using telescopes on planet Earth combined over 10 days of exposure time to create this definitive galaxy portrait of M51. The image includes 118 hours of narrowband data that also reveals a vast glowing cloud of reddish ionized hydrogen gas discovered in the M51 system.

just part 1!!! the uprising arc is horribly adapted which i'm livid about for two of my favorite characters in the whole shebang, historia and kenny. if i buy any of the manga it'll be volumes 13-17, maybe 18 (for keith 😘). someone who's been in the fandom longer probably has sources for this but my understanding is yams was unhappy with his writing/probably internalized criticism from manga readers too hard and told WIT to change A Lot generally not for the better. imo this is where ending haters first started complaining about the story's direction because, you know, the morality was getting more adult and nuanced

idk where you are in your manga read but two chapters i'm always screaming about are 51 and 65 if you want to skip ahead for just Some of what WIT cut or truncated beyond belief: historia's "worst girl in the world" bit looks unjustified and edgelord-y because her messier moments/total breakdown of krista's identity are cut; levi is sanitized to make kenny look worse; there's earlier hints about grisha and the founder (and frieda) that make eren seem, idk, softer and imo transfem; new squad levi does Not like him at first; i can go on and on and i HAVE. in fact i'm so bothered i'll just throw some of my favorite pages under the cut if tumblr lets me

plot: james broke his hand again by doing a Violence(TM), a thing that happens once or twice every year bc his braincells like to take a vacation every now and then. he would love it if ur muse would let him not talk about it actually. whether he did it bc he beat up someone who hurt/did something bad to ur muse or bc he is dumb and punched a wall is up to u.

connections: gf/bf/partner. mutual secret forbidden crush, assistant, bff he is totally not into and def 100% only likes as a friend and totally would not burn down the world for. daughter's/son's partner/ex/bff [gasp] idk u decide. the messier the better. no incest

Astrophotography from my backyard--from last night's imaging run: M78, LDN 1622, and a piece of Barnard's Loop. Top right is a structure composed of a batch of dark nebulae clustered around the reflection nebula Messier 78 (M78, NGC 2068), about 1,350 lightyears away, and bottom left is LDN1622, the "Boogeyman Nebula" about 500 lightyears away. And the wide ribbon running between them, mostly ionized hydrogen and interstellar dust, is part of "Barnard's Loop", which runs around the Alnitak side of the constellation Orion.

Imaging Notes: 49 x 300-second subs taken with the ZWO ASI071MC color camera (cooled to 0°C, gain 0) and the William Optics Redcat 51 apochromatic refractor (250mm FL, f/4.9), Sky-Watcher EQ6-R Pro mount, ZWO ASIAir Plus astro controller. I shot 94 sub-expsures at 5-minutes each, starting around 7pm and running through the night to about 4am, but ended up tossing almost half of them, stacking the best 49.

Explanation: Big, beautiful spiral galaxy M101 is one of the last entries in Charles Messier's famous catalog, but definitely not one of the least. About 170,000 light-years across, this galaxy is enormous, almost twice the size of our own Milky Way. M101 was also one of the original spiral nebulae observed by Lord Rosse's large 19th century telescope, the Leviathan of Parsontown. Assembled from 51 exposures recorded by the Hubble Space Telescope in the 20th and 21st centuries, with additional data from ground based telescopes, this mosaic spans about 40,000 light-years across the central region of M101 in one of the highest definition spiral galaxy portraits ever released from Hubble. The sharp image shows stunning features of the galaxy's face-on disk of stars and dust along with background galaxies, some visible right through M101 itself. Also known as the Pinwheel Galaxy, M101 lies within the boundaries of the northern constellation Ursa Major, about 25 million light-years away.
