Constance Bennett - The Hollywood Fox
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Constance Campbell Bennett (born in New York City on October 22, 1904) was an American actress born to an aristocratic family of actors of English and Spanish ancestry. Blonde, stunning and honey-voiced, she glided through Hollywood with a sprite-like lightness and definite air of style and sophistication, receiving the moniker, "The Hollywood Fox."
The eldest of three daughters of actress Adrienne Morrison and actor Richard Bennett, she attended the Chapin School in New York along with her sisters Joan Bennett and Barbara Bennett, both of whom were actresses.
She was first Bennett sister to enter motion pictures, appearing in New York–produced silent movies before a meeting with Samuel Goldwyn led to her Hollywood debut in 1924. She took a hiatus during a brief marriage, but resumed it after her divorce.
In the early 1930s, Bennett was frequently among the top actresses named in audience popularity and box-office polls due to hits like Topper (1937). Her contracts with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Warner Brothers, and RKO made her a big star in Hollywood, and her cutthroat contract negotiations earned her the sole female spot among Hollywood’s poker-playing elite comprised of top movie moguls.
By the 1940s, Bennett was working less frequently in film but was in demand in both radio and theatre, and she also formed her own production company, Constance Bennett Pictures, which produced two films. Nonetheless, shrewd investments made her a wealthy woman, even founding a cosmetics and clothing company, called "Fashion Focks."
Shortly after Madame X (1966) was completed, Bennett collapsed and died from a cerebral hemorrhage at the age of 60 in Walston Army Hospital at Fort Dix, New Jersey. In recognition of her military contributions, and as the wife of John Theron Coulter, who had achieved the rank of brigadier general, she was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
Legacy:
Won the Photoplay Awards - Best Performances of the Month in April 1925
Was the highest-paid actress in Hollywood during the early 1930s
Founded the Constance Bennett Cosmetics Company and a clothing company called "Fashion Frocks" in the 1930s
Formed her own production company, Constance Bennett Pictures, which produced two films: Paris Underground (1945) and Smart Woman (1948)
Made smart business investments, including holding stocks in the historic Arrowhead Springs Hotel
Awarded military honors for her role in coordinating shows flown to Europe for occupying troops (1946-48) and the Berlin Airlift (1948-49)
Nominated as the Hall of Fame: Actress Award in the 1978 Photoplay Awards
Has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6250 Hollywood Boulevard for motion picture

Kabesang Tales - Isang Rap en Rol Musical
A Filipino Musical that hasn't left my mind since the mid 2010s
Tumblr media
Poster for Kabesang Tales posted by Palakat Batangas City via Facebook
Although the Philippines is known for its many talented singers which include many that had crossed over to Broadway such as Lea Salonga, and Rachelle Ann Go, alongside many other Filipino-American talents like Conrad Ricamora, Arielle Jacobs, George Salazar, and Darren Criss just to name a few, the musical scene in the Philippines itself isn't as popular nor as successful in the country as it really should be.
Even with Filipino-majority musicals in states like the controversial Broadway musical "Here Lies Love" which narrates the life story of Imelda Marcos, one of the most controversial figures in Filipino politics and history today, and with Filipino stars often taking in lead or secondary roles in major productions, the musical boom of the 2010s did not come with a boom for the musical industry in the local level compared to the sudden popularity of American musicals like Hamilton, Heathers, Dear Evan Hansen, or Be More Chill to name a few.
The very few musicals that did garner the spotlight did not receive the same notoriety of these foreign productions save for one of the few musical movies to have gotten major media acclaim Loy Arcena's Ang Larawan (2017) (en. The Portrait) based on the 1997 play of the same name by National Artist Nick Joaquin which became a media frenzy as being maybe one of the few if not the only original movie not based on major series or created by a large production company to be released that year for the Metro Manila Film Festival. One of the things that had skyrocketed it to media attention was the fact that most theaters did not screen it and it was only shown in very few cinemas, but that's a story for another time.
Despite the time and devotion Filipino musical fans may have for theatre, rarely do Filipino made and produced musicals ever enter the pop culture zeitgeist due to many factors like the lack of advertising, accessibility issues, and honestly the lack of cast recordings. Out of the many throughout the 2010s, one of the few I was able to watch that I still think about at times is Ricky Lee's very own rap and rock musical Kabesang Tales.

Kabesang Tales - Isang Rap en Rol Musical) (en. Captain Tales - A Rap n' Roll Musical) is a rap and rock musical first performed in the year 2015 and was written by renowned Filipino writer and National Artist Ricky Lee. The musical was directed by Alejandro "Bong" Ramos, with music by Jeffrey Hernandez and Alfredo Ongleo, and produced by Red Lantern Production (Inquirer, 2015).

The musical stars John Arcilla as the titular character Telesforo Juan "Kabesang Tales" De Dios, famously known for his breakout role as Hen. Anotnio Luna in the historical film Heneral Luna released the same year as the musical, alongside other talents such as Dio Marco as Karyo, Kevin Posadas as Tano de Dios, Alecx Lorica as Juli De Dios among many other talented actors (Inquirer, 2015).

The play is based on Jose Rizal's El Filibusterismo (en. The Filibuster) and more specifically, the character of Kabesang Tales, the head of his barangay (a sort of Filipino village) and father of Basilio's main love interest Juli, who had turned into a guerilla bandit after his family and life were ruined by the Spanish friars. He becomes the feared Matanglawin (en. Hawkeye) who terrorizes the countryside. He plays a minor but important role in the books, being the father of one of the main secondary characters as well as being one of the main allies of the primary characters as they tried to start a revolution in the country.
The play primarily focuses on his perspective throughout the whole book with some scenes focusing more on the main protagonists Simoun and Basilio as well as his daughter Juli.
Performances and Releases
The musical had limited performances throughout some parts of the CALABARZON Region or Region IV-A, with some select performances in Metro Manila as well as some other provinces like in Mindoro, sometime during the years 2015-2017 with some being done in local cultural centers and schools throughout the region with very limited promotion outside of news stories.
The only promotional material I could really find are some posts on Facebook and a trailer in the Red Lantern Production's YouTube channel which could be seen here:
youtube
Trailer uploaded by Red Lantern Production via YouTube
There are no original cast recordings that I could find of any of the songs and the only material that I could find besides this are uploads on YouTube of scattered scenes from different parts of the play:

Full Playlist uploaded by YouTube channel pheejaypi here
I was also able to find a collection of clips of Karyo, a character possibly named after Karyo from Mga Ibong Madaragit which is a continuation novel of the El Filibusterismo written by Amado Hernandez, played by Terrence Guillermo.

Video uploaded by YouTube channel pinoy music maestro here
I remember some time in the 2010s seeing uploads of members of the cast singing in interviews I believe but I could no longer find any of these videos.
As of now, it is unknown if the production will ever come back with the last post on the Facebook page having been in 2021 with a post prior to posted on July 2019 calling for auditions in August 2019, possibly hinting that there was a planned 2020 tour for the musical before the pandemic hit.

The Plot (mostly from memory)
As there's barely any material of the live musical, I'll do my best to recollect what I could remember with the aide of the actual books to guide me. Of course, spoilers for Rizal's books Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo if you haven't read them.
The plot follows the events of El Filibusterismo but mainly from the perspective of the titular character Kabesang Tales. It begins with an extremely happy and optimistic scene with him, his family, and barangay as well as the visit of Basilio, Tales's daughter's lover to their house. I remember that there was an extremely cheesy song here between the two that a lot of people squealed over.
Tumblr media
Photo of the mentioned musical number between Basilio and Juli posted by Jayson Pascua
The perspective switches over to Basilio and his visit to his mother's grave where he is shocked to see a man there who is revealed to be the thought to be dead fugitive Crisostomo Ibarra who now goes by Simoun, a jewelry merchant from the United States. The two have a bit of an argument where Simoun tries to convince Basilio to join him and his rebellion and I don't recall exactly if there was a song, but it seems likely.
Perspective switches back to Tales as tragedy strikes as his entire family gets struck with malaria resulting in the death of his wife. I don't remember all the details here or if there was a song, but I remember a sort of depressing atmosphere for the rest of this part.

Photo showing all of the actors playing the De Dios Family posted by Jayson Pascua
The family struggles with money and friars come over to cause even more problems for them. There's a rap battle here between Tales and a friar. Here starts his downward spiral as he struggles to make ends meet as well as handle the friars that had been trying to gain his land. I don't recall if it's shown that he has to pay for a lot of lawyers, but he starts paying more and more for legal fees because of the legal drama with the friars and the government.
My sister tells me that there's a song about how good the friars are before they get properly introduced and I have a hazy memory of three friars wearing varied outfits typically associated with friars posing for the stage as people sing songs of praise and goodwill. My sister tells me that Basilio was in the ensemble here.
His son, Tano, gets drafted to the Guardia Civil (en. Civil Guard) and sent to the Caroline Islands because Tales could not pay money to prevent his draft due to their financial struggles. This is shown as a heart wrenching scene in the play where the rest of the family is left distraught.
He starts guarding his property in fear of bandits possibly taking his fields and taking whatever he has left.
Tales then gets taken by these bandits who demand ransom money for his return. There he meets Karyo, one of its leaders who tells him about the struggles of the working class and why he and the others had resorted to being bandits in the first place (?). I don't actually remember if this is the first they meet or what since I do remember that the two have a philosophical discussion about violence later and that Karyo is definitely a member of the bandits but there are scenes where he acts as the emcee during Tales's rap battle with the friar.
The bandits later lets him go back to his family where he finds that he has no one left.
Juli, in order to help with her family's financial struggles as well as pay for her father's ransom, leaves home and asks for loans and find work.
If I'm not mistaken, his father Tandang Selo goes mute with the grief of the continuous tragedies that had struck the family as well. It's hard for me to remember if this was shown in the musical.
When Tales returns, he finds himself at a loss for what has happened to his family. He is left with his daughter forced to work and his father mute. He is then met with Simoun, who comes to him as a jeweler. Simoun tempts him with some ideas of radicalization against the friars and he refuses at first before spiraling further and joining Karyo and his bandits, becoming the feared Matanglawin.
I genuinely don't remember if his meeting with Simoun was also in the musical or not but it's important context for the story.
The musical then switches perspective to Basilio, who gets implicated with a conspiracy against the government and gets arrested. A heartbroken Juli goes to Padre Camorra, a creepy priest that's been trying to corner her, to beg for his help since she saw no one else that could help her. This leads into a rather intense scene acted in shadows and lights where it is heavily implied that Juli gets assaulted.
After this, Juli sings a song about her assault where she contemplates getting revenge or retaliating but instead chooses to jump off to end her life.
The scene switches back to Tales who, unlike in the books, meet with his son again who has returned to the Philippines. This one, I know had a song in it since I remembered the extreme daddy issues punk rock vibes the scene gave off. He sang about how he no longer respected his father and that it's too late to repair things if I recall as he's now a bandit and he's a member of the Guardia Civil.

Desolate and distraught at the loss of his family, Tales gets visited by a diwata (a forest spirit/fairy) and this part was extremely out of left field and absolutely not in the books.
Here, the diwata shows Tales visions of the future (???) and directly tells him, without any sort of subtlety, that the working class, and especially farmers like him, will continue to struggle in his country in the future. He is then shown a scene of farmers in a protest who were then taken down by police in what I remember as riot gear. He contemplates the future and is further given resolve to continue his rebellion.

I need to cut in and say that this was so on the nose and is by far the weirdest and personally maybe the worst part of the show. I'm not even against the message, it just ruined my immersion and just left a weird taste in my mouth. I think the play was doing a plenty good job driving that point across already without the time travel diwata scene but maybe that's just me.
The scene cuts back to the climax of the story where Basilio, distraught over then death of Juli, finally joins Ibarra as they plant a bomb in a wedding reception that the Governor-General of the Philippines was attending. The scene plays out like it was in the books where the lamp gets tossed out by Isagani and the revolution doesn't start.
It goes back to a scene of Tales and his men trying to fight the Guardia Civil where he is shot and killed in action, by the gun of his own son. Tano realizes what he has done and is horrified. This leads to a song which later leads to a finale that sings about Tales as the cast come together for the curtains to close.

The musical ends and the cast is called on to the stage one by one, with the loudest applause going to Basilio who a lot of the girls found hot, and of course, the man himself, Kabesang Tales.
Tumblr media

After the play and final thoughts
Ricky Lee actually attended the performance I watched and I remember so many people crowding around the actors to get their autographs. My sister bought one of Ricky Lee's book, his script writing guide "Trip to Quiapo" and had it signed but she genuinely can't find it anymore sadly. My sister also got the autograph of some of the actors and the director on that same book so I'm a little miffed that we can't find it.
I would discuss more things and even show off my old ticket but I'm pretty sure that I would end up doxxing myself if I speak any more details.
That's all I remember from it and I would love to say more or even discuss the songs but as you can see, I could barely remember them, with only maybe a solid grasp in about maybe four songs.
It's a shame that it doesn't have as much of an established release and media presence because despite that one glaring issue I had with the weird diwata scene, I quite enjoyed the musical and it remains one of the few that I actually got to experience live.
It isn't Les Miserables or Hamilton, but it's still a musical I'll probably fondly remember especially since El Filibusterismo is one of my favorite books of all time with the character of Kabesang Tales being one of the most interesting — a man of honor and virtue who slowly descends into extremist violence because society had failed him. It's sad to see this musical barely recognized and very little talked about today and I do hope that it will one day return to the stage.

Take away my pain
Anonymous asked:
Rowan taking care of Aelin on her cycle
Yes, I am on a roll... I blame the days off. Anyway, despite the title which is taken from a song by Dream Theatre, this fic I sure fluff. Also, I think every woman deserves a Rowan... really.
I hope you’ll love it.
PS: those heat belt really exist and are amazing btw...

TAKE AWAY MY PAIN
It was eleven in the morning when Rowan’s night shift in the A&E finally finished. He closed his locker with a sigh of relief and waltzed out of the changing room with a spring in his step and a grin. He was looking forward to go home and crash in bed. Their bed. He and Aelin, his wife had finally moved in a new house and were still adjusting to the new place which was feeling like home with each passing day. Finding the perfect house had taken a while but the wait had been worth it. Thy had managed to snatch the house of their dreams out in the outskirts and away from the hustle and bustle of the big city. It was a lovely neighbourhood and the house had a garden too and was perfect for when they were going to have kids. They could be outside and enjoy the fresh air. Quickly he got to his car and started his drive home ready to collapse on the bed and sleep until Aelin was back.
The drive took a good twenty minutes. Outside the house Aelin’s car was parked up but he was not worried. He knew that sometimes Aelin enjoyed taking the metro into the centre just to avoid the crazy traffic. The good thing of the hospital being away from the centre was a blessing. Orynth’s traffic could get quite crazy during rush hours.
Rowan grabbed his backpack and got inside. He stopped when he noticed Aelin’s shoes and her jacket. He abandoned his stuff on the floor, toed off the shoes and entered the living room.
“Ae? Are you at home?” He walked around the house, until he decided to go upstairs and found his wife in bed.
“Hey…” he moved to her and sat on the bed at her side “hey you…” his hand brushing her head very gently.
She looked up at him “Ro.”
“I am here. What’s wrong, are you ill?”
Aelin shook her head “just my period.”
All of a sudden everything was clear. Aelin always suffered during her cycle. Some months were better than others but the really bad ones made it impossible for her to get out of bed.
“How bad?”
“I was sick, this morning.”
He kissed her head “what if we take a warm bath? It usually helps.”
She nodded weakly and Rowan jumped into action getting the bathtub ready for both. When they got the house they had splurged and got a nice larger and comfortable tub. They also had a shower for the morning, but the tub had been a guilty pleasure they had both agreed on.
He dumped a few of her favourite salts and went back in the bedroom.
“It’s almost ready.”
Aelin curled on her herself once more and Rowan worried. As a doctor he had pushed her to get checked but she was fine, she just suffered badly, something he knew was part of the package.
“Come,” he lifted her in his arms and went back in the bathroom.
Aelin undressed and he did the same. Once the clothes were on the floor he climbed in the tub and offered a hand to Aelin who then sat in-between his legs.
“Lean against me.”
Aelin did just that and Rowan pulled her long hair aside while his arms went on her back and started massaging it gently. He knew that Aelin would suffer from really bad back pain and he had searched all possible remedies. He had also bought her a belt that would heat up and would cover back and stomach. Aelin had loved the present and wearing it at night had helped to sleep a bit more. “Better?”
“Yes,” she added quietly. “Did you came home early from work?”
“Yes, Lys is covering.”
Aelin and Lysandra had created from scratch and editorial house. They had started small but with time they had started to attract authors and slowly had managed to publish some successful books. They were an indie company and that was a fierce world but the two of them had managed to make a name for themselves.
“Good, I can have you all to myself for longer than planned.”
Aelin lifted her hand and caressed his face “how was the shift?”
The breath that left him was long and ragged.
“That bad?”
“A care pile up in the middle of the night. Some people should not be allowed to drive in the snow.”
She snuggled against him and allowed her husband to wash her hair.
Soon Rowan started to protest that the water was getting cold so he pushed her outside. He grabbed a towel and walked outside to giver privacy to get herself ready. Not because he was disgusted by the act, as a doctor he had an idea of how a woman would use certain products. He just believed that she could do with a bit of personal space.
In the meantime he changed in comfortable clothes and went to get Aelin’s stuff.
“Do you think you will manage soup?” He said while walking back to the bathroom where she was drying her hair.
“Yes, can I have carrot and coriander?”
Rowan moved closer and kissed her “Good, dry up and go to bed. Your belt is out and ready and there are painkillers too.”
“You spoil me.”
His arms slithered around her “it comes in the job description of husband.” A flick of her nose and he left.
Aelin smiled. She had been so lucky with him. Her ex Chaol would disappear for the entire time she had her period as if she was afflicted by a contagious disease and had almost lost it when once she had forgotten feminine products in his bathroom. Rowan was never bothered and claimed that it was natural, maybe his medical training helped. He would do all he could to look after her when she was not well, cook for her and was even patient enough when she was in full PMS and her hormones made her cranky. He would also shop for her supplies when he went grocery shopping.  The first time he did he admitted he knew it was getting closer to the time and she ran out.
He was perfect.
In silence she padded to the bed and saw it was all ready for her while in the distance she could hear the sounds of her husband tinkering in the kitchen. She felt bad. Rowan had just come off shift and was tired too but he had ignored it and looked after her.
It was over an hour later when he brought a tray with two steaming cups of the wonderful soup “M’lady your lunch is ready. The bread is from yesterday, but if you dunk it in the soup it will be fine.”
Aelin grabbed his hand and pulled him closer for a kiss “you are an amazing man.”
He sat at her side “Eat, it will get cold,” he kissed her nose “I love you too, menace.”
Aelin sat up at his side, the blanket tucked nicely around her and her body close to his.
They spent the rest of the day in bed and in her husband’s arms the pain was all of a sudden more bearable.

 Silent film star Alla Nazimova.
A fascinating woman.
From her IMDB bio-
The grand, highly flamboyant Russian star Alla Nazimova of Hollywood silent films lived an equally grand, flamboyant life off-camera, though her legendary status has not held up as firmly as that of a Rudolph Valentino today. Alla Nazimova was born Miriam Edez Adelaida Leventon in 1879, in Yalta, Crimea, in the Russian Empire, to Jewish parents, Sonya Horowitz and Yakov Leventon. She was the third child in an abusive, contentious household. Most of her sad childhood was spent in foster homes or in the care of other relatives and she showed a strong penchant for outrageous behavior to cope. Nazimova also showed a great aptitude for music at a young age and began violin lessons at age seven. She changed her name to Alla Nazimova when she began appearing on stage–her father insisted on it, as “performing” was not considered respectable at the time. She began acting lessons at age 17 and joined Konstantin Stanislavski’s company of actors as a pupil of his “method style” at the Moscow Art Theatre. During that time she supported herself by being kept by rich, older men. A failed love affair led to her only marriage, to an acting student named Sergei Golovin, but they separated quickly. She grew discontented with Stanislavsky and later performed in repertory. She met the legendary Pavel Orlenev, a close friend of Anton Chekhov and Maxim Gorky, and entered into both a personal and professional relationship with him. They toured internationally throughout Europe with great success and came to New York in 1905, where Nazimova was saluted on Broadway for her definitive interpretations of Henrik Ibsen’s “Hedda Gabler” and “A Doll’s House.” Orlenev returned to Russia but Nazimova stayed. She made her screen debut with War Brides (1916), which was initially a 35-minute play. By 1918 she was a box-office star for Metro Pictures and completed 11 films for the studio over a three-year period. A torrid, stylish and rather outré tragedienne who played exotic, liberal women confronted by great personal anguish, she earned personal successes as a reformed prostitute in Revelation (1918), a suicide in Toys of Fate (1918) and dual roles as half-sisters during the Boxer Rebellion in The Red Lantern (1919), not to mention the title role of Camille (1921) with Rudolph Valentino. At the same time she maintained a strong Broadway theatrical career. In accordance with her rise in the film industry, she began producing her own efforts, which were bold and experimental–and monumental failures, although they are hailed as great artistic efforts today. Her Salomé (1922) was quite scandalous and deemed a failure at the time. The monetary losses she suffered as producer were astronomical. The Hays Code, which led to severe censorship in pictures, also led to her downfall, as did her outmoded acting style. She was forced to abandon films for the theater, scoring exceptionally well in Anton Chekhov’s “The Cherry Orchard.” She did return to films briefly in the 1940s in a variety of supporting roles, but she made these solely for the money. Nazimova’s private life has long been the subject of industry gossip. As a Hollywood cover to her well-known bisexual lifestyle, she coexisted in a “marriage” with gay actor Charles Bryant for well over a decade. Her “Garden of Allah” home was the centerpiece for many glamorous private parties. She died in 1945.

Why Invest in New Commercial Projects in Delhi ?
New commercial project investments in Delhi present numerous benefits for both domestic and international investors. Some of the major reasons that Delhi is a lucrative platform for investment decision-making include high potential return on investment.
Probably the biggest advantage of investing in commercial real estate is the high return on investment. Due to growing demand for office space, retail outlets, and co-working hubs, the rental and resale values of commercial properties in Delhi are further expected to appreciate over the next few years at a steady rate. Thereafter,
2. Flexible Payment Schemes
Various new projects have flexible payment plans. In this way, they make financial management easier for the investors. Some of the developers come up with phase payment schemes through which you need to pay in phases, hence decreasing the initial burden on investors.
3. Long-Term Capital Appreciation
Commercial property in the best location appreciates faster compared to residential properties. As Delhi is continuously working on reinventing itself, places like Aerocity, Okhla, and South Delhi have very high capital appreciation, thus promising long-term financial yields from every investor. 4. Demand for Modern Workspaces
These are the reasons why, with the emergence of digitization and remote working, there is an increased demand for modern and flexible workspaces. Coworking spaces are gaining momentum, especially among startups and small and medium enterprises. Investment in such commercial projects would therefore ensure sustained demand and a stable rental income stream.
________________________________________
Things to Consider Prior to Investment in a New Commercial Project
Therefore, prior to venturing into commercial real estate, an investor should bear in mind the following prime aspects:
1. Location
The site where the development is selected and chosen plays an important part in determining how successful your investment will be. The property should preferably be situated in a place which can easily be reached and found from the centres of business and where necessary infrastructure is available.
2. Market Trends
Understanding market trends can help you make an informed decision. Certain sectors that are growing now, such as IT, retail, or logistics, show what type of commercial property is in demand.
3. Legal Documentation
Ensure that the property is properly approved in all legal respects, including zoning clearance and RERA compliance, among other certifications. Not doing this may get you into trouble later.
4. Developer Reputation
His good name should be checked along with his previous projects, so that you can determine whether he delivers quality and timely developments. Well-known developers like DLF and Bhutani Infra have a good track record and hence are a bit safer to invest in.

How to Invest in a New Commercial Project in Delhi
Investing in a new commercial project in Delhi can be hassle-free if you follow the steps given below:
1. Market Research
Start by researching the best commercial projects along with developers in Delhi. Understand the different types of commercial spaces available, such as office spaces, retail outlets, and co-working hubs. Then, evaluate which one fits your goals of investment the best.
2. Visit the Property
Physically visit the property site, if possible, to have an idea about the location, infrastructure, and amenities. The physical inspection will provide a better understanding of the potential of the project.
3. Assess the Return on Investment
Research the trends of the area concerning rentals, appreciation rates, and occupancy. Areas like Okhla and Aerocity tend to yield a higher return on investment because of their proximity to business areas.

Engage the services of a legal consultant who can check if the documents of the property are in order. A legal expert will ensure that these documents are processed according to the local rules and regulations. In this way, legal due diligence will save you from unnecessary hassles in the coming years.

Joan Crawford - The Hollywood Glamor Girl
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Joan Crawford (born Lucille Fay LeSueur in San Antonio, Texas on March 23, 1906) was an American actress remembered today as the quintessential "Hollywood Glamor Girl."
Of French-Huguenot and English ancestry, she joined several dance contests, one of which landed her in a chorus line. Before long, she was in Broadway.
By 1925, she was on her way to Hollywood for a contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Her first role came soon after - as the body double for Norma Shearer, MGM's most popular female star. The studio saw her potential, but disliked her name, so they ran a contest, "Name the Star," in Movie Weekly.
Crawford made several silent films and had continued success in talkies after working very hard to remove her Southern accent. Even though she remained a respected and profitable actress at MGM, her popularity declined in the 1940s. In 1943, she requested to be released from MGM and immediately signed with Warner Brothers.
Warner Brothers gave her a chance to show her range and revived her career with movies like Mildred Pierce (1945), which won her the Academy Award for Best Actress. Like before, she asked to be released from her contract in 1952.
She continued to work freelance and became actively involved with Pepsi-Cola Co. through her marriage tot he company's president. Her career came to a lull again mostly because of the lack of roles for older women in Hollywood. By the 1960s, she again had a transformation and became her own PR machine, with a new script, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962). It was a hit and led to a string of roles until she retired in 1970.
At 69, she died from a heart attack in her apartment in Lenox Hill. Manhattan. Shortly after, it was revealed she paid for the medical care of hundreds of people, many of whom were from the film industry. She never publicized these nor wanted the public or patients to know.
Legacy:
Won the Academy Award for Best Actress for Mildred Pierce (1945) and nominated twice more: Possessed (1948) and Sudden Fear (1953)

Chez Artiste is second Landmark movie theater to shutter in under a month
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Less than a month after closing the 97-year-old Esquire Theatre, California-based exhibitor Landmark Theatres said it will shut down south Denver’s Chez Artiste as well. Located at 4150 E. Amherst Ave. in the University Hills neighborhood, the arthouse theater with a trio of modest screens has, for decades, cultivated a crowd that attends nearly every premiere, party and — in the past — celebrity visits during the Denver Film Festival. Chez Artiste’s final day will be Thursday, Aug. 8, according to a notice on the front door. “It has been our pleasure to serve you!” the sign said, and listed Landmark’s two remaining theaters in the metro area: Denver’s Mayan Theatre and The Landmark Greenwood Village. Landmark marketing and brand chief Mark Mulcahy told The Denver Post by email that the closure comes in the wake of the company’s regular market evaluations, as well as its individual theater performance. “We’ve made the decision to close the Chez Artiste location but look forward to servicing our Chez Artiste guests and broader Denver audience at our local Greenwood Village location or The Mayan in downtown Denver,” he wrote. “Our goal is to move some of the specialized content Chez Artiste played to the Greenwood Village [location].” South Denver’s Chez Artiste movie theater, which has been open since 1972, is closing Aug. 8, according to owner Landmark Theatres. (John Wenzel, The Denver Post) Despite its small capacity, Chez Artiste boasted things its competitors didn’t: a rotating selection of TCM-era classics from the 1930s-’70s and its status as a cultural destination that was not dependent on its neighborhood or spare, concrete surroundings. Originally opened in 1972, the Chez Artiste has been operated by Landmark since 1992. It was renovated in 2012 to add digital projectors and sound, new seating, wider rows and various design touches.
Fans of the Chez Artiste will throw a party for the theater and its staff on Aug. 8 at the theater, according to people interviewed for this story. One of the theater’s fans, Stan Ward, wrote a letter to Landmark, criticizing the company for the way it has handled the closure. “The management staff there has provided the best movie-going experience in Denver for 15+ years,” Ward wrote in a note that he shared with The Denver Post. “I believe the Esquire theater was given several months notice of their closing. To give Chez one week’s notice after their long, exemplary service is, in my opinion, almost criminal. The staff there have earned the right to be treated far better than a one week’s notice.” Mulcahy responded by saying that “key longtime staff” were asked to consider a move to Landmark’s Greenwood Village location. He also talked about the industry as a whole. “We flourish when large numbers of people patronize the theatre weekly, daily, monthly, purchasing food & beverages,” he added in the response. “We would not close a theatre that is flourishing. We must make tough decisions when a theatre constantly loses money.” Other supporters posting on Instagram, Facebook and X have suggested that Landmark wait until the end of the calendar year to shutter Chez Artiste. Landmark, which has been an exhibitor for 50 years, previously shut down Denver’s historic Esquire Theater on July 17. The company had stopped paying rent in April 2020, according to commercial real estate firm Unique Properties — which then tried to sell the building for $3.3 million. It has since been purchased and will be redeveloped for mixed-use tenants. Subscribe to our weekly newsletter, In The Know, to get entertainment news sent straight to your inbox.
