In the Manhattan Project they burned uranium in a graphite-moderated reactor and then chemically separated out the plutonium. But developing the separation process itself required a lot of research (for obvious reasons, nothing was known about plutonium chemistry), and they did not want to wait until the reactor was complete before starting that research program.
Therefore, the question in the summer of 1942, was as follows: How could any separations process be tested at the concentration of plutonium that would exist several years later in the production plants when, at this time, there was not even a microgram of plutonium available? This problem was solved through an unprecedented series of experiments encompassing two major objectives. First, it was decided to attempt the production of an actual weighable amount of plutonium by bombarding large amounts of uranium with the neutrons from cyclotrons. It must be remembered that never before had weighable amounts of transmutation products been produced with any particle acceleration machine. Even extending this possibility to the limit, it was not anticipated that more than a few micrograms of plutonium could be produced. The second aspect of the solution of this problem involved the novel idea of attempting to work with only microgram amounts of plutonium but, at the same time, at ordinary concentrations. It was decided to undertake a program of investigation involving volumes of solutions and weighings on a scale of operations much below that of ordinary microchemistry.
So they did all the bench experiments on a Lilliputian scale, in tiny glassware, holding the scoops with forceps, and examining the end product in a microscope. A small beginning for a big explosion.

and Today, I’m going to tell you the right way to make decent mock flat white without using a coffee machine
. step by step like you’re in front of me now, So I want you to imagine it. I’m going to explain all the little details
So, yeah, a flat white at heart. We wanted to find a way our patrons could mimic the classic Australian Kiwi drink in the comfort of their own home without the use of espresso machines, with steam wounds or anything crazy like that.

We wanted to keep a few key things that make a classic flat white. So the first thing is a solid espresso like base. We know you won't get the extraction pressure to get the perfect twenty-five-second espresso.
We get that. But we think we found a pretty damn good alternative that you can make just a cafeteria number tow perfect textured silky milk, consistent temperature throughout no bubbles cause bubbles are bad.
We want to create that lovely silky texture that you can get with a steam wand. But just using a cup of tea air, And lastly. for me, no flat why is complete with little love heart woodshop lip on top.
And you can create this using a cavity air as your milk jugs. We're going to keep this really simple. We're not going to worry about weighing out or measuring .you got to have microgram scales at home.
You can use any coffee like as long as it's ground to a Kosciusko texture. Coarseness. so fresh coffee. You always want to keep it as fresh as possible. Remember, it doesn't get along with a shelf life after a couple of days, it goes a bit better than horrible.
And this size. Yeah. We're going to go if it's six teaspoons of pretty ground coffee. OK, so The kettle boiled. We're going to feel about halfway in the cavity air. we want it really, really strong and expresso like.
So we're going to give it a good start. Now, this is going to be much bigger and stronger than unusual Cavity air. CAvity air, because we want it really, really strong, just like espresso, as you can say. It's getting a nice crema on that, which is what you want.
Obviously, it's not an actual crema from an espresso machine because it doesn't have the same pressure.
It's just brewing naturally. We're going to leave it for four minutes. Ok so now Really, really slowly began to plunge down. Don't go too fast. We'll spot holes everywhere and that will burn. So this is filtering out all the old grains when you pour. It's a nice, clear, clean liquid of strong coffee.
And as you can see, we've got a mock crema on that typically flat why is defined by definition, an eight-ounce drink,
Typically two ounces of espresso slash ristretto topped up with six ounces of creamy textured milk. We've obviously used a bit more coffee than two hours because not real espresso. It's just out of a cavity air. It's gonna make it a little stronger
I'm back with a clean cavity air. My coffee is resting somewhere warm.

Now, we're going to start with the milk.
We only need to go about halfway with milk because remember, we only need six ounces of it halfway. Again, nothing too precise. Okay, so obviously we need to heat our milk.
We are going to be lazy and use our microwave. If you're scared to use a Microwave, use a hob. Of course, we're going to remove the glass beaker from the metal because we all know what happens when you put metal in the microwave.
So we're going to put them in one minute full power. the start button. Got it. OK. We've got nice hot milk. We're going to pop it back in.
So we've got a nice handle to pull with. Your plunger on and again. Be nice. and gentle, so now we're going to pump the milk to get some air in, but don't go crazy and do this for like 20, 30 seconds.
You'll feel like it's thicker. OK, we're gonna grab a nice warm coffee that's still warm.
Now it's really nice. And finally, just from pumping it with this, we're going to polish the milk, just like you would with a normal job from a barista machine.
You see how shiny. That is actually really good. OK.
So if you do have any bubbles in your milk, give it a tap and polish your milk or swirl your cavity. a Round untile. You can see the lights and your milk and then.
We're going to go in for a pool. So I start slightly higher. Just do circles when you're about three-quarters full. drop low to the middle and then lift and cut.

So there is a really simple and easy way of creating flat withe at home, using one piece of equipment.
It tastes so good. I do quite like it. Obviously, it's not very standard, but we weren't aiming for that.

3D printing has proven itself useful in so many industries that it’s no longer necessary to show off, but some people just can’t help themselves. Case in point: this millimeter-tall rendition of Michelangelo’s famous “David” printed with copper using a newly developed technique.
The aptly named “Tiny David” was created by Exaddon, a spin-off company from another spin-off company, Cytosurge, spun off from Swiss research university ETH Zurich. It’s only a fraction of a millimeter wide and weighs two micrograms.
It was created using Exaddon’s “CERES” 3D printer, which lays down a stream of ionized liquid copper at a rate of as little as femtoliters per second, forming a rigid structure with features as small as a micrometer across. The Tiny David took about 12 hours to print, though something a little simpler in structure could probably be done much quicker.
As it is, the level of detail is pretty amazing. Although, obviously, you can’t recreate every nuance of Michelangelo’s masterpiece, even small textures like the hair and muscle tone are reproduced quite well. No finishing buff or support struts required.
Of course, we can create much smaller structures at the nanometer level with advanced lithography techniques, but that’s a complex, sensitive process that must be engineered carefully by experts. This printer can take an arbitrary 3D model and spit it out in a few hours, and at room temperature.

But the researchers do point out that there is some work involved.
“It is more than just a copy and downsized model of Michelangelo’s David,” said Exaddon’s Giorgio Ercolano in a company blog post. “Our deep understanding of the printing process has led to a new way of processing the 3D computer model of the statue and then converting it into machine code. This object has been sliced from an open-source CAD file and afterwards was sent directly to the printer. This slicing method enables an entirely new way to print designs with the CERES additive micromanufacturing system.”
Much smaller than that doesn’t work, though — Micro-David starts looking like he’s made of Play-Doh snakes. That’s fine, they’ll get there eventually.
The team published the details of their newly refined technique (it was pioneered a few years ago but is much better now) in the journal Micromachines.
