Oh fuck me ok. So this map of valkyria is both randomized AND the enemy starts before you do, which usually you move first. Which means that one of the main enemies will just take out your tank in one hit and then slaughter your command units and THEN you can start the mission. Jesus.

#and she comes from a different spot every time bc her spawn is randomized and you can’t adjust the position of your team before your turn #meaning you can’t hide the weak points of your tanks they are just automatically exposed to being taken out #ramblings #Mina plays valkyria #this isn’t like fun hard this is just fuck you hard

valkryia 4, for all of its flaws, did definitely get better as it went on (well, it got better, then way worse, then a lil better), and there were some moments that actually really shocked me and got me invested, especially when it came to kai and raz. and it improved upon a lot of gameplay elements from 1, so i’ll give it that.

however, as decent as the ending was, i just cant get into it the same way as 1. 1 ends with welkin and alicia married with a kid, yadda yadda, but the ending 1) promised change for the future and a shift in society to combat long-standing racism and bias within that society, and 2) was earned, with welkin’s brains and alicia’s abilities directly responsible for every victory. Gallia beat the Empire bc all of the characters were actively working towards that goal at all times.

but in valk 4, after half of the game is spent heading towards the capital of the empire to deploy a nuke, after the characters struggle and eventually decide that they have to detonate a nuke to end the war, right as claude is about to push the button... miraculously a ceasefire is called. the war just fuckin ends out of nowhere.

and claude reacts accordingly! he’s pissed that it took up until this horrible moment for this to happen, and i didn’t WANT him to detonate a nuke, but like... what was the point? what did this whole stunt accomplish? the ceasefire was called independently of his actions.

#like theres a message about choosing peace which great! awesome! but claude didnt call for the ceasefire!#and for context: claude is supposed to be a master tactician #i was fully expecting claude to have a revelation right before pressing the button to go 'wait! i have a better idea! this is how we can get #them to surrender without civilian casualties!' but no. random ceasefire #and at this point the emperor is already dead so like #i would have assumed the war effort would have really slowed down already #but faldio sacrificed himself and alicia to take out the emperor! isara died! the whole monarchy was almost overturned!#and the world fundamentally changed bc of it!! isara's death in itself sparked a whole wave of antiracist action in the characters!#and welkin was a fuckin smart guy who also had the whole 'no i choose peace' moment with alicia that was way more impactful #bc he didnt sacrifice alicia to end the war then and there but he DID haul ass to find another way to do it!#idk. no one cares. i need to make a video essay or smthn #ramblings #Mina plays valkyria

No, you have to push through more levels of endgame content to get the true ending

This valkyria map has a person with a machine gun with the accuracy of a sniper rifle at the highest point of the map. And you don’t start with cover. So you can imagine how that’s going for me

#you need to work your way up a long stairway filled with shock troopers and snipers WHILE being shot at by that thing that tests apart #your scouts in seconds. help.#I have to find a way to constantly lay smokescreens while keeping my units totally mobile while also protecting my tank from the other tank #ramblings #mina plays valkyria

This is legitimately embarrassing

#the better the rank means the faster you completed the mission which means you have to be super aggro and accurate with your shots #the D rank was a map where you start out surrounded by turrets so I had to take them out before I could move my infantry and it took too #long I guess :((#I’m honestly more mad about the B rank because it’s because I missed 2 mortar shots and it set me back a round. I was so close #and once you complete a mission you can’t go back and retry so that’s gonna be there forever :;#oh well. guess I gotta get A ranks for the rest of the game #ramblings #mina plays valkyria

Valkyria 1 was a beautiful epic focused on the horrors of war, the beauty of interpersonal connection, and the active choice to fix the wrongdoings of your ancestors

Valkyria 4 made me listen to a cum joke

#I’m… about to lose it. it wasn’t even funny #the first game is for TEENS. what happened to the original plot #the only thing I like abt the characters so far is that they actually include a lot of squad members in the cut scenes where in the first #game it was just the main 5. everything else I hate. I still haven’t beat valkyria yet bc I’m doing the dlc before the final battle to get a super good gun but the only way you unlock it is by getting perfect A ranks on all 4 missions (which are determined by how quickly you win a map). The issue is that you can’t go back and replay a map so the second you mess up an attack or a movement or whatever during your turn you have to immediately load a save and try again.

#there’s been so many times where I’ve figured out how to do a map perfectly and it hinges on my sniper making all their headshots #and the first one is a miss. and then I have to wait the 2 minutes it takes my ps3 to load a save #I figured out how to beat the final map so that’s not a big deal I just want the gun. which would have been useful to have for the last #couple missions but alas.#in the dlc you play from the empires POV (which is the enemy faction) as they take over a fort you have to liberate later in the game which #is cool. but your main character that is an instant fail if he dies is an ENGINEER. the fucking squishiest class in the game that is #entirely support based and you have to run him across a fuck ton of cross fire #I’m fine. I’m perfectly fine #ramblings #mina plays valkyria

i guess valkyria 4 has “secret recruits” that you get after completing very specific conditions but i accidently recruited almost all of them without realizing except for 1. and that one requires you to save up 1 million dollars of in game currency all at once

#shes apparently one of the most accurate lancers in the game and shell go well with 2 of my fave shocktroopers so its worth the grind #saving up the money means i cant spend it on upgrading weapons tho. which means its harder to kill enemies bc my weapons are worse than #theirs. which means its harder to get an A rank and earn the max amount of money for a mission #so i was just continuing on with the story as normal and working triple hard to keep everyone alive #turns out you can replay old maps. you can just replay the easy maps that still give a ton of money and xp. why did no one tell me this #but that also means i can go back and fix those three missions that i didnt get an A rank on. but like. i could have #been doing that the WHOLE TIME #anyways i have over 650 thousand saved and im gonna replay the map that gives me 125 thousand a few times. stonks #mina plays valkyria #ramblings
