All jokes aside the novel is so good at nailing the creeping dread and tragedy of the characters situations. Like, Lucy is being put through hell and when she thinks she’s finally getting better everything takes a turn for the worse to the point where she thinks this is the night she will die and writes a memorandum. And because the emails are chronological we immediately get Mina’s unopened letter after the break in. Its like a sucker punch. It highlights that from Mina’s point of view its just another Saturday and its time to send their routine correspondence that includes their routine reaffirmation that they matter so much to each other. That when she gets home she’ll call on Lucy and catch up like always but we know better and now we’re just waiting in real time for when Mina’s gonna come home and find out what has happened, what is happening, to her dear Lucy and its gonna hurt
