Female scientists in Africa are entrepreneurial and resourceful. They are finding innovative solutions to problems that affect their communities, and many are actively seeking to engage others in their work. But for more women on the continent to achieve in science, they need policies that help to lower the barriers to their success and that incentivize international collaborations. These are among the findings of a special series of articles in Nature, as well as a poll that received responses from 249 African researchers. The majority (217) work in African countries, and 103 identified as female.
Our series shows that women working in research in African countries are thriving — founding businesses, launching non-profit science-education efforts, training the next generation of scientists and joining their countries’ health, agricultural and space ministries.
They include Khady Sall in Senegal, who in 2020 led a project to manufacture face shields against COVID-19, and Veronica Okello in Kenya, who is researching green approaches to cleaning up heavy metals such as chromium and arsenic. We also profile Aster Tsegaye, an HIV/AIDS researcher helping to train researchers in Ethiopia, and Elizabeth Kimani-Murage, who studies malnutrition in Nairobi’s urban communities.
Pontsho Maruping has switched from working in South Africa’s mining sector to helping to develop the country’s astronomy and space programme. Meanwhile, Angela Tabiri in Ghana studies quantum algebra and founded a network of female mathematicians. Adidja Amanihelps to run vaccination programmes at Cameroon’s public-health ministry, and Nigerian microbiologist Amina Ahmed El-Imam researches the production of fuels from microorganisms.
Many also work in community empowerment, are helping to communicate science to wider audiences or are working to boost science education. And their achievements have often come after a period of study or research abroad — a finding echoed in our poll. Of our poll’s 103 female respondents, 59 had studied abroad; their reasons for doing so included gaining international experience, building professional networks and bringing back specific expertise.
It is also clear from the profiles that many of the women made huge personal sacrifices to obtain their PhDs — those who studied overseas and are mothers, for example, often spent months at a time away from their children, leaving them in the care of others, such as fathers and grandparents.
Women in Africa experience greater barriers to developing careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) than do women in high-income countries, with lack of funding a particular problem. Some challenges, however, will be familiar to women the world over. Many women need to take time out for pregnancy, maternity leave and breastfeeding, and women also tend to do a higher share of childcare and domestic duties.
Moreover, some women told Nature that they have not been promoted as quickly as their male counterparts, even though they are publishing at the same rate and bringing in as much research funding and equipment to their institutions as men. The reasons vary, but include being evaluated according to outdated criteria. Often, for example, adjustments are not made for the gaps in publication and funding records that result from women taking parental leave. Although the gender gap is closing, the World Economic Forum forecasts that, at current rates, this could take 95 years in sub-Saharan Africa (go.nature.com/3i9oxb9).
Our series also illustrates the impacts of chronic funding shortages in Africa, and the resourcefulness needed to push many projects forwards. In countries where universities lack access to national grant programmes, some researchers and students pool funds from their salaries to buy reagents and small items of equipment. They are willing to make these and other sacrifices, knowing that research experience will both make them valuable and benefit their communities.
Africa’s researchers badly need long-term, stable investment from internal and external funding sources, including venture capital. In our poll, 56% of respondents (122 of 217) working in science in Africa cited a lack of funding as their greatest career challenge, and it was the top concern for both men and women. Work–life balance was the second-most mentioned concern for women. If only Africa’s governments and the international donor community could do more to help scientists to realize their ambitions: even modest funding increases could go a long way towards accelerating nation-building.
That said, some continent-wide initiatives are helping to address systemic challenges for female scientists in Africa. Since 2011, the Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA), based in Nairobi, has sponsored 228 doctoral and postdoctoral fellows, 57% of whom were women, across a number of countries. CARTA has two women at its helm: co-directors Catherine Kyobutungi and Sharon Fonn.
Similarly, the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) is a pan-African network of centres that has trained almost 2,500 students in intensive, residential mathematics master’s programmes, with more than 800 going on to get PhDs. AIMS is led by the educationalist Lydie Hakizimana, and its main goals include increasing the continent’s number of maths students and the representation of women in STEM fields. One-third of its alumni are women.
Such networks are further strengthened when researchers in high-income countries, which tend to have more-mature scientific infrastructures, get involved. Researchers in such countries have an important part to play by collaborating with researchers in Africa.
Such partnerships would benefit scientists not just in Africa, but throughout the world. African researchers include leaders in their fields; scientists on the continent can also bring fresh perspectives, informed by their knowledge and experiences, to research projects. International collaboration needs to be more common. As the COVID-19 pandemic has shown, such exchanges can happen seamlessly on virtual platforms. Africa’s female scientists are on the rise — and partnering with them could give sky-high returns.

For those of you who missed this, this is the doctor whose genius Trump is praising.  As always, bolding is mine for emphasis.
A Houston doctor who praises hydroxychloroquine and says that face masks aren’t necessary to stop transmission of the highly contagious coronavirus has become a star on the right-wing internet, garnering tens of millions of views on Facebook on Monday alone. Donald Trump Jr. declared the video of Stella Immanuel a “must watch,” while Donald Trump himself retweeted the video.
Before Trump and his supporters embrace Immanuel’s medical expertise, though, they should consider other medical claims Immanuel has made—including those about alien DNA and the physical effects of having sex with witches and demons in your dreams.
Immanuel, a pediatrician and a religious minister, has a history of making bizarre claims about medical topics and other issues. She has often claimed that gynecological problems like cysts and endometriosis are in fact caused by people having sex in their dreams with demons and witches.
She alleges alien DNA is currently used in medical treatments, and that scientists are cooking up a vaccine to prevent people from being religious. And, despite appearing in Washington, D.C. to lobby Congress on Monday, she has said that the government is run in part not by humans but by “reptilians” and other aliens.
Immanuel gave her viral speech on the steps of the Supreme Court at the “White Coat Summit,” a gathering of a handful of doctors who call themselves America’s Frontline Doctors and dispute the medical consensus on the novel coronavirus. The event was organized by the right-wing group Tea Party Patriots, which is backed by wealthy Republican donors.
In her speech, Immanuel alleges that she has successfully treated hundreds of patients with hydroxychloroquine, a controversial treatment Trump has promoted and says he has taken himself. Studies have failed to find proof that the drug has any benefit in treating COVID-19, and the Food and Drug Administration in June revoked its emergency authorization to use it to treat the deadly virus, saying it hadn’t demonstrated any effect on patients’ mortality prospects.
“Nobody needs to get sick,” Immanuel said. “This virus has a cure.”
Immanuel said in her speech that the supposed potency of hydroxychloroquine as a treatment means that protective face masks aren’t necessary, claiming that she and her staff had avoided contracting COVID-19 despite wearing medical masks instead of the more secure N95 masks.
“Hello, you don’t need a mask. There is a cure,” Immanuel said.
Toward the end of Immanuel’s speech, the event’s organizer and other participants can be seen trying to get her away from the microphone. But footage of the speech captured by Breitbart was a hit online, becoming a top video on Facebook and amassing roughly 13 million views—significantly more than “Plandemic,” another coronavirus disinformation video that became a viral hit online in May, when it amassed roughly 8 million Facebook views.
“Hydroxychloroquine” trended on Twitter, as Immanuel’s video was embraced by the Trumps, conservative student group Turning Point USA, and pro-Trump personalities like Diamond & Silk. But both Facebook and Twitter eventually deleted videos of Immanuel’s speech from their sites, citing rules against COVID-19 disinformation. The deletions set off yet another round of complaints by conservatives of bias at the social-media platforms.
Immanuel responded in her own way, declaring that Jesus Christ would destroy Facebook’s servers if her videos weren’t restored to the platform.
“Hello Facebook put back my profile page and videos up or your computers with start crashing till you do,” she tweeted. “You are not bigger that God. I promise you. If my page is not back up face book will be down in Jesus name.”
Immanuel is a registered physician in Texas, according to a Texas Medical Board database, and operates a medical clinic out of a strip mall next to her church, Firepower Ministries.
Immanuel was born in Cameroon and received her medical degree in Nigeria. In a GoFundMe legal defense fund, which swelled from just $90 to $1,616 hours after her speech, Immanuel claims without offering any proof that members of a Houston networking group for women physicians are scheming to take her medical license away over her support for hydroxychloroquine.
It’s not clear whether anyone is actually trying to take Immanuel’s license. But many of her earlier medical claims are definitely ludicrous.
In sermons posted on YouTube and articles on her website, Immanuel claims that medical issues like endometriosis, cysts, infertility, and impotence are caused by sex with “spirit husbands” and “spirit wives”—a phenomenon Immanuel describes essentially as witches and demons having sex with people in a dreamworld.
“They are responsible for serious gynecological problems,” Immanuel said. “We call them all kinds of names—endometriosis, we call them molar pregnancies, we call them fibroids, we call them cysts, but most of them are evil deposits from the spirit husband,” Immanuel said of the medical issues in a 2013 sermon. “They are responsible for miscarriages, impotence—men that can’t get it up.”
In her sermon, Immanuel offers a sort of demonology of “nephilim,” the biblical characters she claims exist as demonic spirits and lust after dream sex with humans, causing all matter of real health problems and financial ruin. Immanuel claims real-life ailments such as fibroid tumors and cysts stem from the demonic sperm after demon dream sex, an activity she claims affects “many women.”
“They turn into a woman and then they sleep with the man and collect his sperm,” Immanuel said in her sermon. “Then they turn into the man and they sleep with a man and deposit the sperm and reproduce more of themselves.”
According to Immanuel, people can tell if they have taken a demonic spirit husband or spirit wife if they have a sex dream about someone they know or a celebrity, wake up aroused, stop getting along with their real-world spouse, lose money, or generally experience any hardship.
Alternately, they could just be having dream-sex with a human witch instead of a demon, she posits.
“There are those that are called astral sex,” Immanuel said in the sermon. “That means this person is not really a demon being or a nephilim. It’s just a human being that’s a witch, and they astral project and sleep with people.”
Immanuel’s bizarre medical ideas don’t stop with demon sex in dreams. In a 2015 sermon that laid out a supposed Illuminati plan hatched by “a witch” to destroy the world using abortion, gay marriage, and children’s toys, among other things, Immanuel claimed that DNA from space aliens is currently being used in medicine.
“They’re using all kinds of DNA, even alien DNA, to treat people,” Immanuel said.
Immanuel’s website offers a prayer to remove a generational curse originally received from an ancestor but transmitted, in Immanuel’s telling, through placenta. Immanuel claimed in another 2015 sermon posted that scientists had plans to install microchips in people, and develop a “vaccine” to make it impossible to become religious.
“They found the gene in somebody’s mind that makes you religious, so they can vaccinate against it,” Immanuel said.
Immanuel elaborated on her fascination with witchcraft in her 2015 Illuminati sermon, claiming that witches were intent on seizing control of children.
In her 2015 sermon on the Illuminati’s supposed agenda to bring down the United States, Immanuel argues that a wide variety of toys, books, and TV shows, from Pokémon—which she declares “Eastern demons”—to Harry Potter and the Disney Channel shows Wizards of Waverly Place and That’s So Raven were all part of a scheme to introduce children to spirits and witches. Immanuel warned that the Disney Channel show Hannah Montana was a gateway to evil, because its character had an “alter ego.” She has claimed that schools teach children to meditate so they can “meet with demons.”
In the sermon, Immanuel preserved special vitriol for the Magic 8-Ball, a toy that can be shaken up to “reveal” any answer. Immanuel claims the otherwise innocuous Magic 8-Ball was in fact a scheme to get children used to witchcraft.
“The 8-Ball was a psychic,” she said.
Immanuel’s oddball claims about the world extend to politics. She didn’t bring up this allegation publicly in Washington, but she has claimed that the American government is run in part by non-human reptilians.
“There are people that are ruling this nation that are not even human,” Immanuel said in her 2015 Illuminati sermon, before launching into a conversation she had with a “reptilian spirit” she described as “half-human, half-ET.”
Immanuel has also used her pulpit to preach hatred of LGBT people. Shortly before the Supreme Court legalized gay marriage, Immanuel warned her flock that gay marriage meant that “very soon people are going to be seeking to marry children” and accused gay Americans of practicing “homosexual terrorism.” In the same sermon, she praised a father’s decision to not love his transgender son after a gender transition.
“You know the crazy part?” Immanuel said. “The little girl demands he must love her anyway. Really? You will not get it from me, I’d be like ‘Little girl, when you come back to be a little girl again, but you talk—for now, I’m gone.’”
Unusually for a pediatrician, Immanuel has praised corporal punishment for children. The American Academy of Pediatrics opposes corporal punishment, and claims that the “vast majority” of pediatricians do not recommend it.
“Children need to be whipped,” she declared in a 2015 sermon, before adding that she didn’t think children should be “abused.”
It’s also not clear that Immanuel has abided by her claims that face masks aren’t necessary. In her Washington speech, Immanuel claimed that she and her medical staff had avoided any COVID-19 infections while wearing only medical masks. But in two videos shot at her clinic, Immanuel appears to be wearing an N95 mask, which offers more protection.
Immanuel has also alleged that masks of all kinds are superfluous, because she says COVID-19 can be easily cured with hydroxychloroquine. But in a Facebook video advertising her clinic, Immanuel said anyone seeking treatment should wear a face mask before entering the clinic.
“Wear a mask, or a scarf, or anything to cover your face,” Immanuel said in the video.
Immanuel has seized on her newfound celebrity, tweeting a video demanding that CNN hosts and National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases chief Anthony Fauci give her jars of their urine so she can test if they’re secretly taking hydroxychloroquine even as they caution against its use.
“I double dog dare y’all give me a urine sample,” Immanuel tweeted in her challenge.
Now Immanuel is angling for the key rite of passage for any budding MAGA-world personality: a visit to the Trump White House. Late Monday night, Immanuel tweeted that she was open to meeting the president.
“Mr President I’m in town and available,” she tweeted. “I will love to meet with you.”

Drawing from past experience working with the United Nations, he advises governments on judicial modernisation, rule of law issues, and the training of African judges, prosecutors and lawyers on a pro bono basis. Mr Ayuk regularly participates in industry-specific conferences and seminars as a speaker and moderator.
In order to bring the African legal industry into the 21st century, he launched in 2018 CenturionPlus, Africa’s first lawyers and advisors on demand service offering that lets companies and investors scale their legal teams up and down according to their corporate and project requirements.
Since 2018, he is also the executive chairman of the African Energy Chamber where he leads continent-wide efforts to build domestic capacity and advocate for a stronger and more united African energy industry.
Mr Ayuk is recommended in Chambers, Who’s Who Legal, and Forbes Magazine. He is also the author of the industry best-seller, Big Barrels: African Oil and Gas and the Quest for Prosperity,  which recaptures the narrative on Africa’s oil and gas sector to provide a more objective and balanced picture of the industry’s benefits for African economies and entrepreneurs.
He graduated from University of Maryland College Park and earned a JD from William Mitchell College of Law in the United States. He holds an MBA from the New York Institute of Technology and is an active member of the Association of International Petroleum Negotiators (AIPN), the Institute for Energy Law (IEL) and the Petroleum Joint Venture Association (PJVA).
His second book, Billions at Play: The Future of Africa Energy and Doing Deals, will be published at the end of 2019.

Jeremy Jones
"There are a lot of good ways that the church can engage the world but they don't. Instead they focus on other things, or worse yet, themselves. You see it a lot in Africa, especially with the prosperity gospel, where the focus is on wealth and health. The world needs a good church now more than ever."
Jeremy is a first-year ThM candidate at the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry. Before coming to Boston, he spent three years pursuing a Master of Divinity degree at Africa International University in Nairobi, Kenya. He participated in the “Theological German” course during the 2018 Summer Language Program at HDS, and is now currently applying to doctoral programs.
Availability of Vast Resources
My experience at the Summer Language Program was really fantastic. It was also a great segue into life here in Boston for me. I chose to come to Boston for programs like this, and also because of the BTI. It's really great that so many students can take advantage of the many resources that are available in the area through cross-registration. And our teacher, Karin Grundler-Whitacre, was just wonderful. Despite the compressed format of the SLP, she made learning German quickly both manageable and rewarding.
My time at the SLP is already paying off in my research and writing. It has also been helpful in applying for PhD programs and ultimately makes me more connected to global scholarship. The chance to connect with other students outside of my school during the summer session was also invaluable. I can't thank Dr. Grundler-Whitacre and HDS enough for opening the doors to this program to non-HDS students. It's a great benefit to the academic community here.
Hearing the Message
I grew up in an Episcopal church (kind of). I don’t think my parents were really strong believers, but we went, because that’s what people do on Christmas and Easter and stuff. So I was involved in the church somewhat but never really understood it or believed what they had to say. Long after my childhood, before I graduated from my undergraduate program, a friend of mine invited me to play bass guitar at a little church plant in Aurora, CO. It was like their first or second service and I went and I heard the message and I felt like I’d never heard anything like it before, even though I had been in church quite a bit. From that day, I believed the message and my life has been different ever since.
Time went on and I was in the church playing music most of the time—guitar, bass, piano, singing sometimes and doing some short-term mission work here and there. Eventually I got to a point where I wanted something deeper. There’s a verse in the Bible that talks about the difference between spiritual “milk” and “solid food.” There’s a point where you get tired of drinking milk and you want something a bit stronger and heartier. I realized I just wasn’t getting what I needed spiritually from the church experience.
I felt there was a big gap between what you learn at church and what a seminary can do for you. This is one thing I would like to help bridge at some point. There are some people in the church who want to learn more and go deeper in their studies but it feels like they can’t do that without getting into a big program. There are many resources available but in many ways there is still a disconnect between the seminary and the church.
For me, the best option was to make that leap. I decided I wanted to go to seminary and learn more about the word of God and about ministry. I was at a point where I was considering the possibility of doing ministerial work full time. It was quite a big transition for me. I hadn’t been in school for a few years and the program I had done previously was in music. Going from a career in music to pursuing a degree heavy in reading and writing was a big change. But I’m really glad I did it—and I’m here now, and I’m going to continue on!
Making the Leap
People in Kenya used to ask me how I found the school, and they always thought it was a weird answer that I found it online, but that’s a whole other story for another time. But really, I was just looking for schools, and I was interested in serving in Africa because I had done some short-term mission work there before. I really wanted to learn more about the people and the culture and what ministry was like there. So I was searching for schools online and I found a Wikipedia page with a list of all the seminaries in Africa. I saw that there was one in Nairobi. I didn’t think much about it at first and thought I’d continue searching for something more realistic, or at least something closer to home. But then I ended up returning to Kenya a few months later and I was able to visit that school and see the campus and talk with the administration.
One of the people I was with said, “You know, you can stay in the U.S., study the books and then come back to Kenya and learn the culture. Or you can just come here now and learn the books and the culture at the same time.” That was a deciding insight for me. It made a lot of sense—we read the same books, and they have good teachers there from all over the world and it is a really cool intercultural environment with people from all over Africa so I thought, “Yeah, let’s do that.”
I was there for three years. I did come back to the States twice during my program, but only briefly. Now that I’m back here to stay indefinitely, America kind of feels like a whole new country again for me in some ways. When I was there in Kenya I was really trying to immerse myself in the culture and with the people as much as I could, probably to a fault, actually. When it came down to it, I would prefer to spend time with the local people rather than engage with other Americans. But ultimately that's why I wanted to be there. I didn’t just go move to Kenya to spend time with other Americans, I moved there to understand African life, from Africans.
I started to get comfortable with the life there, living as an American can live in Nairobi. So when I came back here, it was kind of a big shock, to be honest. I had always experienced some reverse culture shock after leaving Africa on my previous trips, but this time things were a little different because now I am with my wife, who is from Ethiopia. The first time she ever left East Africa was when we came to visit the States with me last year, for only a couple of months. So the permanent move has been a bit tough in some ways. We had a wonderful community in Kenya who we grew together with for the few years we were there. And my wife had lived in Kenya longer than I, a total of seven years, so she really felt like it was home. It’s a whole different world over there, and coming here we had to adapt to a whole other way of life again. But we just rely on God and we pray a lot and we trust that He has a plan for us. We have met some wonderful people here that have been helpful in our transition, and we thank God for that.
At the same time that it's tough, it's also exciting. Especially watching my wife, and seeing America through her perspective has been really neat. She sees things that you and I would take for granted. In a weird way, I almost feel like I’m growing up again, experiencing this transition with her.
Tumblr media
The More You Learn
It’s hard to describe how different it is from the States unless you’ve been to Africa. Even though Kenya is probably one of the more Westernized countries, that’s only on the surface level. Everything “Western” you do, you still have to add the African culture to it, especially in seminary, I think. There’s someone who said that Africans are notoriously religious. Before and after just about every class, we would pray. Sometimes we would hear testimonies, or maybe a student had a specific need and the class would talk about it for the first half hour, and finally maybe an offering would be taken in class to help them out. I was there for three years and it seems like the more you learn, the more you realize how much you don’t know and how different some things really are. I can’t really do justice to the culture as a whole, but at least this one example from my experience may shed some light.
It was really interesting because they use the American system of education, with lectures, discussions, the semester system, and everything. But being in courses with others who were so very different from myself, hearing all their stories and their points of view, just left me amazed at how although we were studying the same topics, in the same systems, the underlying processes were very different, and yet we were still able to make lasting connections with one another through our studies.
A lot of the learning happens outside of the classroom. When I first moved there I lived with a pastor from Cameroon. We bonded immediately. He helped me learn how things operated at the school. He was a wonderful guy and I learned a lot from him. He tried to show me how Africans engage in things differently than Westerners do. People there are very hospitable, even to the point of being extreme about it. He was explaining to me once that when people come over to your house randomly and unannounced it’s not that they’re trying to interrupt your day or anything. It’s just that they have something burning in their heart and they need to come and see you and say “Hi,” and be in your house and welcome you, especially if you are new to the area. People are really welcoming and talkative and communal and engaging with one another. That’s what is most important for most people, and that is what comes through in just about everything you do there. Here, I think people tend to be very competitive and individualistic. Of course you see that in Nairobi, too, but in the more traditional cultures the focus is not just on achieving, it is achieving together that matters.
This experience definitely changed my spiritual life. And that's what I wanted but I didn't really know that before I went. My relationship with God has been deepened and strengthened. There were ways that I had to rely on God like I never had before, living in a new place, a new culture, with people I didn’t know, and not having any Western things to grab onto. I dove in headfirst and challenged myself not to hold onto things that were comfortable for me. Finally that became one of the biggest lessons I learned from my experience, to not reach out to things that were easy and comfortable but to make a shift to reaching out to God when times were tough, or even not that tough, but just the day-to-day issues that can get us down. In all of those moments I learned to reach out to God and find comfort. It took going to the extreme to get there, but now my spiritual life has been forever strengthened because of this experience.
My relationship with the church is more thoughtful now, too. I expect more of the church. Before, I think I was just frustrated. But now I expect a lot from it. In some ways I think the church has been lagging behind. There are a lot of good ways that the church can engage the world but they don't. Instead they focus on other things, or worse yet, themselves. You see it a lot in Africa, especially with the prosperity gospel, where the focus is on wealth and health. The world needs a good church now more than ever.

How to get around an already issued CEMAC Permit. A Cemac certificate is issued by the government of Cameroon to show that you are an approved buyer of gold and diamonds.
The government controls the goods, diamonds, or gold and secures that the seller is paying the export fees. The government ministry of mines then arranges for the shipment to the buyer.

Tumblr media
YouTube and the War on Truth As of June 2019, YouTube, owned by Google Corporation, with a long history of peddling “big data” to spy agencies and right-wing extremist groups, is going to “clean house.” Their claim, that they will remove all “hate speech” and unspecified other “objectionable material” is a huge threat against free speech around the world. You see, Google’s YouTube has actively molded a world of its own, financially partnering with the fake, the inane, the absurd while deeply censoring free speech from day one. For years, YouTube has run an obscure system of fake volunteers financed by think tanks and spy agencies, hundreds of them housed in special facilities in Haifa, Israel, that ban users whose material reflects badly in Israeli apartheid. Moreover, YouTube has provided, in partnership with the highly secretive military contracting firms, Idea Groups and Jigsaw, to give terror groups like al Qaeda and their many “nephews” along with ISIS, “on the fly” covert communications and operational intelligence. The same “troll rooms” in Haifa that clean free speech from YouTube help secure private posting boards for ISIS and other terror groups who communicate their operational plans using comment boards on videos. This was the ISIS fallback when their use of Facebook chat was exposed, and the NSA began tracing terror cells through their “Zuckerman channel.” ISIS and al Qaeda members simply stay logged into their YouTube app and run “tear sheet” coded transmissions under the protection of Google Corporation. More than that, this process, using YouTube chat to plan terror bombings, mass shootings or gas attacks is taught by advisory groups financed under Google Jigsaw’s program of fostering “democratic resistance to tyranny.” Google financed resistance organizations have been active in support of what they term “democratic movements” in Syria, Egypt, Libya, Sudan, Somalia, Ghana, Cameroon, Nigeria, Ukraine, Georgia, Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Bahrain, Sri Lanka, Italy, France, Germany, Belgium and two dozen other nations. Our projections show that these groups have been tied to assassinations, literally hundreds of bombings, kidnappings and mass rape, theft of antiquities, massive arms trafficking and, of course, manipulation of the media. In fact, the Google-Facebook partnership which includes YouTube, operates cells on 3 continents with a playbook taken directly from NATO’s failed Gladio operation. For those unaware, Gladio was established by NATO in the late 1970s to train resistance fighters in case of a Soviet invasion of Europe. Gladio, however, soon became Black September, the Red Brigades and eventually ISIS, according to our sources. For 20 years, Gladio terror attacks, an organization intended to fight the Soviet Union, terrorized Europe. History is now repeating itself, but the scale is a thousand times greater. Liars Decide What is True YouTube’s earliest targets are to be BDS, the movement to force governments to use Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions to enforce UN resolutions involving Palestine. It is good to note that over 45 % of what is called Israel, without Gaza, Golan or the West Bank, is legally the Palestinian State of Judea and Samara, in accordance with UN resolutions with BDS programs directly in accord with international law as stated in the Fourth Geneva Convention. YouTube has decided to operate outside UN resolutions and to oppose the authority of the International Criminal Court at The Hague and the Geneva Convention. Naming YouTube-Google-Facebook a “rogue state” is legally supportable. Calling them the Deep State may well be even more accurate. From the New York Times, June 5, 2019: “YouTube announced plans on Wednesday to remove thousands of videos and channels that advocate neo-Nazism, white supremacy and other bigoted ideologies in an attempt to clean up extremism and hate speech on its popular service. The new policy will ban “videos alleging that a group is superior in order to justify discrimination, segregation or exclusion,” the company said in a blog post. The prohibition will also cover videos denying that violent events, like the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, took place. YouTube did not name any specific channels or videos that would be banned. But on Wednesday, numerous far-right creators began complaining that their videos had been deleted, or had been stripped of ads, presumably a result of the new policy. “It’s our responsibility to protect that, and prevent our platform from being used to incite hatred, harassment, discrimination and violence,” the blog post said.” It is funny that the Times mentions Sandy Hook. A prominent American academic is facing a defamation trial for editing a series of papers by independent journalists who comment on inconsistencies in the official narrative. Our own investigation of the incident, from a counter-terrorism, counter-intelligence standpoint found massive irregularities in the investigation and handling of evidence and, moreover, the fact that funds used to punish or silence members of the independent press, is of mysterious origin. In fact, so many investigations are botched or rather faked. For some years, I managed security firms that, among other capabilities, investigated critical incidents, including air crashes, mine disasters and terrorism. Most of our investigators and forensics experts came from the FBI or other agencies. The mechanism believed to have been employed at Sandy Hook was certainly employed at 9/11, at Khan Sheikhoun in Syria, during the murders of John and Robert Kennedy along with the alleged Skripal poisonings in Britain. In case after case, as is easy to ascertain, governments are overthrown, bombing attacks ordered, countries invaded, sanctions employed, all based on “findings” from fake investigations of incidents where the real perpetrators are those who benefit, as is always the case, from the mayhem and suffering caused. Of course now, YouTube has stepped in to remove the offending videos, which include CBS anchor Dan Rather reporting the arrest of Mossad agents with explosives on the George Washington Bridge on 9/11, videos of tactical nuclear weapons used against Yemen or outside Damascus in May 2013 and, most telling of all, the statements of dozens of witnesses describing how the White Helmets stage gas attacks including, in one video, 40 former White Helmets themselves. Are we seeing an agenda here? This reminds me of a personal experience. I had just returned from Nairobi where I was tasked with making recommendations to the Interior Ministry after the infamous shopping mall attack that killed 71 people. When I got home, a local attorney asked for pro bono aid in investigating a fatal car crash involving two vehicles that hit head on outside Wauseon, Ohio. The police investigation, made entirely on the scene in less than 30 minutes, found a young woman driving one of the vehicles responsible of homicide. Our investigation showed that, at the scene, the young woman was refused medical care though in critical condition and was later arrested based on a coerced confession made while she was in a semi-coma in the intensive care unit of a local hospital. She nearly died during the helicopter ride, something worth note. There was one problem. Both cars were found in the lane where the young woman was driving and the other driver, an older woman, had actually crossed over the line and caused the accident. Review of medical records showed the older woman to have been heavily drugged on Ambien, a hypnotic sedative and a cocktail of opioids and anti-psychotic drugs. She was, medically, a “zombie.” Worse still, when the “black boxes” were downloaded from each vehicle and uploaded into a “full physics” crash simulator, the animations, which exactly mimic car movements, steering, speed, braking, easily demonstrated that the police had faked the investigation. A review of the officers involved showed that they had performed hundreds of similar investigations, all with no forensic evidence, all simply fabricated. It isn’t just traffic accidents, criminal investigations of all kinds are much the same, pick a guilty person, engineer fake evidence, and send them to prison. There’s a pattern here. If an official source comes forward, then we have a whistleblower, a “criminal.” They can’t be believed. In fact, they must be hunted down and imprisoned. If it is an independent journalist, they are “conspiracy theorists” and YouTube erases their work. If video evidence is so compelling it cannot be ignored, then it is “fostering hate” and is removed. Being policed by the police is bad enough, being policed by tech companies controlled by extremist political movements, which aptly describes all Google and Facebook functions, redefines tyranny.

Addressing COVID-19 in Vulnerable Diamond and Gold Mining Communities
International Development
This piece was written by Terah DeJong, technical deputy for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Artisanal Mining and Property Rights (AMPR) project, implemented by Tetra Tech.
This post originally ran on LandLinks.
“Look at how we work,” said Sylvain, an artisanal diamond miner in Sama near Carnot in the Central African Republic (CAR). “If the coronavirus comes to this site then we’re all going to get it.”
That concern is shared by CAR authorities and its partners, including USAID, as the country responds to the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic. While the virus has been slow to take hold in CAR, cases have gone from less than a dozen to more than 700 in just a few weeks, according to May 2020 figures from the Health Ministry (in French).
Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) communities are particularly vulnerable given close proximity of diggers at work, extreme poverty, lack of access to health care, and limited understanding of the virus. Additionally, ASM communities are suffering financially since they depend on fluid international trade in order to sell their minerals and receive financing.
The USAID AMPR project supports mining communities and promotes legal, responsible supply chains for minerals including diamonds and gold. With USAID support, local NGO Réseaux des journalistes pour les Droits de l’homme (RJDH) teamed up with Mining Ministry authorities to raise awareness of COVID-19 in major mining areas in southwest CAR. The USAID AMPR project also is expanding women’s soapmaking associations in mining communities to fight the virus and support women’s livelihoods.
From May 6 to 14, 2020, RJDH and the Mining Ministry organized a series of radio roundtables (in French) with local health and mining officials, passing along key messages on hand washing and social distancing.
“We’re worried that artisanal miners have not yet fully understood the threat of this disease,” said Dr. Patrick Ouango, a regional health official in Berberati, CAR. “Local radio is essential to reach them.”
The experts also exhorted miners and traders to play their part in combatting mineral smuggling to neighboring Cameroon, which USAID AMPR-funded research found was the primary transit hub for illegal diamonds (in French) and gold.
The fear is that smuggling could seed infections in western CAR where health facilities are few and far between. Indeed, with the Bangui M'Poko International Airport closed since March 27, the land border with Cameroon—a vital economic lifeline to land-locked CAR—has been the main source of new infections.
The economic fallout in mining communities due to COVID-19 is of equal concern. Up to a quarter of CAR’s impoverished population depends on mining, and with the global disruption to the gold and diamond supply chains, local prices have dropped 30 percent and the legal chain of custody is paralyzed.
Meanwhile food prices have increased 25 to 30 percent compared to the same period in 2019. In this context, mining will not only continue, but may increase as newly unemployed people turn to digging in order to survive, despite unfair prices and predatory behavior by smugglers.
Prior to COVID-19, the diamond sector was showing signs of recovery after years of challenges due to smuggling and armed group involvement in the minerals trade and subsequent trade restrictions put in place by the Kimberley Process. The gold sector also has been looking up, with legal exports having increased 350 percent since 2016.
The government and its partners are worried that the crisis could undo progress and play into the hands of illegal actors and armed groups, which are increasingly active in mining areas. There also has been renewed violence from armed groups in Ndélé, CAR, another diamond-rich area.
“There is a risk that fraud and smuggling will increase due to COVID-19,” said Mining Minister Leopold Mboli Fatran at a April 17 press conference (in French) on COVID-19 and the mining sector. “I therefore invite mining sector actors to avoid bringing the disease into our country through illegal transactions in neighboring countries.”
Partners working on the mining sector in CAR—USAID AMPR, the European Union (EU) Strengthening Governance in the Gold and Diamond Sector (GODICA) project, and the World Bank Programme de Gouvernance des Ressources Naturelles—have convened bi-weekly calls to exchange information and coordinate.
USAID AMPR and EU GODICA are supporting the Kimberley Process national and local committees in charge of monitoring diamond mining zones to begin reporting on the COVID-19 situation at mining sites. The committees have helped the Mining Ministry produce brochures on COVID-19 prevention targeting mining stakeholders.
For Maxie Muwonge, the USAID AMPR chief of party coordinating the project’s response, the support to the government and communities is a vital part of the project’s mission.
“We aim at supporting good governance and development in mining communities,” said Maxie from his Bangui office, where they have been without electricity since early March. “COVID-19 is a threat we have to adapt to, but also an opportunity to step up our actions.”
For example, USAID AMPR reached out to women’s associations trained in soap-making by predecessor USAID project, Property Rights and Artisanal Diamond Development (2007-2013). Several were still making and selling soap nearly seven years since the end of the previous project.
As part of its portfolio of activities supporting women’s livelihoods in mining communities, USAID AMPR is funding one of the ongoing soap-making groups to train new associations. The aim is to increase the local supply of soap to help fight the virus while also enabling women’s groups to seize a new market opportunity during a precarious time.
While it remains to be seen how the crisis will play out in CAR with upcoming presidential elections and risks of instability, the mobilization of mining sector actors gives hope that men and women in the country’s mining communities will once again demonstrate their resilience.
