I do think it is funny that so far when it comes to 80's/90's OVAs, you can often invert the popularity metric to get a quality rating. Golden Boy or Bubblegum Crisis have nothing on Minna Agechau or Call Me Tonight. Which, to be clear, is not the case for most anime for me - I am not in fact that much of a hipster.

And while for sure I like the weird, experimental stuff, I named the above two intentionally - Minna Agechau is absolutely a sex comedy! The genre can work, but I think those earlier sensibilities were permissive of certain genre extremes that I find degrade the experience, which more mainstream anime do not share. Original OVAs were a niche that lent itself to going harder in different directions, and the biggest direction is one I do not jive with. All averages and margins, of course, but still definitely a trend I am seeing.
