When someone tells me that this or that tool or technique is cheating, I ask them if they know how old it was or who invented it, if they do not know I launch into a detailed explanation of the Artist/Inventor who created the technique or tool and then tell them all about the fabulous pieces they used it to create that now hangs in a Museum they should someday visit if they can ever afford to. BTW the movie Tim’s Vermeer pisses me off, because they spend the entire thing “debunking” common, non mysterious tools that artists have used ALL THE TIME and for CENTURIES, but you know, why bother talking to an actual working artist or art historian when you can reverse engineer things we sell as children’s toys at museum gift shops to help kids understand that creation is accessible to all, (literally two of the “ideas” he comes up with for how Vermeer worked I bought plastic versions of with my allowance at a Museum in San Francisco when I was 9)
He seems mad that art is a practice, not a bolt of divine. And he takes it out on Vermeer. How dare you streamline your process and make your workflow easier with technology!
