Amalaka and Papmochani Ekadashi 2020 Date, Significance, Puja Vrat - Times of India

Ekadashi in March – Amalaka Ekadashi & Papmochani Ekadashi: As per Hindu calendar, there are two Ekadashi in every month. The first one falls in (Krishna Paksha) and the second is celebrated in (Shukla Paksha). Hence, in the month of March 2020 – two important Ekadashi vrats will be celebrated. The first is Amalaka Ekadashi and the second is Papmochani Ekadashi. Both of these Ekadashi vrats hold utmost significance in Hindu religion.

Amalaka Ekadashi – Friday, March 6, 2020 The Amalaka Ekadashi, also known as ‘Falgun Shukla Paksha Ekadashi’, will be celebrated on Friday, March 6 this year. This Ekadashi falls after major Hindu festival Maha Shivratri and before Holi. On this day, devotees worship in the shadow of Amala (Indian gooseberry) tree. It is said that those who keep fast on the day of Amalaka Ekadashi gets blessings from Lord Vishnu. This vrat is also performed to achieve Moksha.

Papmochani Ekadashi – Friday, March 20, 2020 The literal meaning of Papmochani is – free from sins. As the name suggests, this vrat is done to get free from sin(s). On this day, devotees worship the Lord Vishnu’s Chaturbhuj Roop. This festival is celebrated after Holika Dahan and before Chaitra Navratri. This year, Papmochani Ekadashi will be celebrated on Friday, March 20, 2020.

However both North Indian and South Indian observe it on the same day. Currently it falls in month of March or April in English calendar. Parana means breaking the fast. Ekadashi Parana is done after sunrise on next day of Ekadashi fast. It is necessary to do Parana within Dwadashi Tithi unless Dwadashi is over before sunrise. Not doing Parana within Dwadashi is similar to an offence. Parana should not be done during Hari Vasara. One should wait for Hari Vasara to get over before breaking the fast.
