Week 11&12 _Project 3_ Measurement & Overall Reflection
It is exciting to finish off the last project of the subject in semester 1.
My product selection of Project 3 looks very simple with uniform sides, I thought about to change to something else, however, it was the third time I changed my selections... I will definitely challenge myself more by choosing a complex form if I have another chance.

Measurements:
Body: 1. find 2 little rubber boxes with rubber inside and sticked the steel ruler in the middle, glued them together to keep the ruler vertical to measure. 2. Cut out a strip with the width 10mm, and then secure the strip to the ruler on the right angle, the height of the strip is adjustable by doing this way as the picture shows:

so I got the all the height of the body.
3. I traced the circumference of the bottom of the jug on the paper, found the centre point and worked out the diameter. Similarly, I used a string to measure t top part of the jug, to get diameter of the neck.
4. Record all the measures on the paper, drew all the dots down, then connected the all together.

Handle: same method as above. however the width of the handle were not accurate enough firstly.
Opening section:
It was actually challenging to record the accurate dimensions for the lip of the jug. I use 4 methods until it get the most accurate datas.
Method 1: Held steel ruler in a vertical way to measure the horizontal and vertical length, the traced the shape on the paper.
Method 2: I used strings to take the measurement. It was very hard to keep both ends of the string steady, so still not perfect.

Method 3: By using the profile gauge that I borrowed from the workshop, I got the longest length of the lip, however, It is very complex and inconvenient to keep the profile gauge vertically to the jug and also get the right shape because the surface of the lip is too irregular.
Method 4: eventually I used a compass to measure the lip.

And by following the way of I measured the lip, I successfully got the top view of the jug. Athough It took ages to the closest shape of the lip in Auto CAD.
What I will improve next time:
To be honest, some of the uncertainty dimensions may cause difficulties in the future when make the model by using foam core. Thus, if I do it next time or having a similar situation, I will use a vernier caliper for more precise measurements.
Overall Reflection
The things went well and I enjoyed:
From my perspective, I think everything just went through smoothly on the first 3 weeks when we were learning the engineering drawing. I managed to get all my practices and work done on time, I could even help people with mastering their drawing tools like circle template and compass. Anyway, I had so much passion and motivation about the hand drawing and it helped me to get a decent mark for my project 1. Another part I did enjoy was Rendering in the Photoshop. Once I was familiar with the tools and orders in PS, everything became handy although it did take me such a large amount of time to figure out stuff and achieve the highest level of rendering that I could reach. By the way, I could make orders freely without using a mouse in PS, and the funny thing was I felt inconvenient to use a mouse_ didn’t use the mouse for 4 years. Additionally, I preferred PS than Auto CAD for no reason, Don’t ask me why here it comes—
The stuff I had difficulties with or I disliked.
I thought the rest of the Communications subject would be continued like I expected until week 4 came. Auto CAD, such a nightmare for me. Before this course, I tried to download Auto CAD twice, neither of them worked on my laptop due to verify problems. Then when everybody got to use it for work, I tried, even more, times, however, the thing just didn’t work and got stuck while installing. I asked help for Robert, he had no idea about either. Thus, It causes me a lot of money to get my laptop fixed (there were also some other problems in my laptop). Sadly, when I had my computer back, the guy told me although the laptop got fixed up, it seemed like my laptop did not support the newest vision for CAD. “OMG, okay, ANYWAY, at least I could use CAD and catch up my work as my progress has already a week late than others.” I thought.” Dramatically, I found that I was a kind of person which was not sensitive about technology at all. It was already hard for me to cheer myself up and do some CAD drawings, continuously, I was so disappointed about both of myself and the program after the first go— could not even produce a straight line!!! Even Robert encouraged us not to be panic, BUT how could I not be after I realised the technicians did ’t download CAD with my uni ID, and the free trail almost end and the other assessment was about coming and I was still messed up by CAD…….. Literally cried.
Eventually, with Frederik’s help, I found an online tutorial to reinstalled the program with my uni ID, the following day, I spent 5 hours in the lib to learn the most annoyed thing in my life from Fred, FINALLY, I could use it, and completed my CAD drawing for project 3 individually. It was challenging for me to use at all, it was only a torture to start with.
What would I do differently if I had my time again?
If anything technical issues happens on my laptop, go ask for help online first, it might just guide you solve the problem. Do not be panic or push off the work about the stuff you dislike, just calm down find someone to help you out and learn it calmly instead of making it worse. Go to a lecture on time. I always 8- 10 mins late for the lecture. If I could get up 15 mins earlier, I would have my breakfast eaten and be punctual.
What were some of the key things I learnt, or insights which I developed?
The pressure of fail will eventually become motivation to force you to achieve what you have to achieve. I desired to pass the course, thus I learnt how to Auto CAD.
What led to those experiences or insights?
I overcame the difficulties and when I looked back, I have gained a lot from the past.
At last, thank you Robert and all the tutors who supported us. you were awesome, helpful responsible. The whole process of learning was resourceful and engaging.
