Myths vs Realities in MEAN Stack Development: A known battle
Introduction
In the whirlwind world of web development, technologies evolve at breakneck speed. Today’s innovation quickly became yesterday’s news. Amid this relentless progress, the MEAN stack development—a synergy of MongoDB, Express.js, AngularJS, and Node.js—has stood as a bastion for developing scalable and robust applications. Yet, whispers of its impending obsolescence persist.
Tumblr media
Let’s set the record straight by debunking these myths with a blend of facts, insights, and authentic data, reiterating the MEAN stack's enduring relevance.
Let us begin by understanding what is MEAN stack development.
What does MEAN Stack Development Mean?
Tumblr media
The term "MEAN Stack Development" refers to the process of building applications using a specific set of JavaScript-based technologies known collectively as the MEAN stack.
This stack includes MongoDB, Express.js, AngularJS (or Angular), and Node.js. Each component in the MEAN stack serves a unique purpose in the application development process, making it an efficient, modern approach to building both websites and web apps.
Here's a brief look at each component:
MongoDB: A NoSQL database that uses a document-oriented data model and a non-relational approach to store data. MongoDB is designed to handle large volumes of data and is known for its flexibility, as it allows developers to store data in a format that is similar to JSON (JavaScript Object Notation).
Express.js: A web application framework for Node.js, designed to build web applications and APIs in a simpler and faster way. It is minimalistic and flexible, providing a robust set of features for building single-page, multi-page, and hybrid web applications.
AngularJS/Angular: A structural framework for dynamic web apps, allowing developers to use HTML as the template language and extending HTML's syntax to express the application's components clearly and succinctly. AngularJS refers to the older version of Angular (versions 1.x), while Angular refers to the versions 2 and up. Angular is highly efficient for building interactive and dynamic single-page applications (SPAs).
Node.js: A runtime environment that allows for the execution of JavaScript code server-side. Node.js uses an event-driven, non-blocking I/O model, making it lightweight and efficient, especially for data-intensive real-time applications that run across distributed devices.
Further, let us understand why you should use MEAN Stack Development?
Why Use the MEAN Stack?
The MEAN stack is popular for several reasons:
Uniformity: All components of the MEAN stack use JavaScript, which provides a streamlined development process from client to server to database.
Efficiency: The non-blocking architecture of Node.js, combined with the powerful data handling of MongoDB and the expressive frameworks of Express and Angular, make the MEAN stack highly efficient for developing complex applications.
Community Support: Each technology in the MEAN stack has a strong community, providing vast resources, extensive documentation, and active forums for troubleshooting and support.
Cost-Effective: Being open-source, all technologies in the MEAN stack are free to use, which reduces development costs.
MEAN stack development is particularly suitable for those looking to build modern, scalable, and easy-to-maintain applications using JavaScript across the entire stack. It's a powerful choice for developers aiming to build dynamic websites and applications with ease and efficiency.
Now, finally let us begin the tussle game of Realities and Myths of MEAN stack Development and debunk the myths in the next section.
6 Hard hitting myths you didn’t know
Myth 1: The MEAN Stack is Yesterday’s News
It’s easy to think that the MEAN stack is sliding into the shadows, overshadowed by newer, flashier technologies. This myth paints a picture of a technology stack on the decline, struggling to keep up with the times. However, this isn't quite accurate. The truth is that each component of the MEAN stack is not only surviving but thriving, thanks to continual updates and improvements.
For example, according to the Node.js User Survey Report, Node.js has been enhancing its performance with new features, with 85% of respondents using it primarily for web apps (Node.js User Survey).
The Reality Check: Technologies evolve, they don’t just fade away. The MEAN stack is no exception, with a vibrant developer community dedicated to pushing its boundaries and ensuring it meets the needs of today’s developers and tomorrow’s applications.
Myth 2: MEAN Stack Can’t Handle the Heat of Modern Apps
There’s a narrative that suggests the MEAN stack isn’t cut out for the complex, real-time demands of today’s applications, especially under heavy loads. At first glance, it might seem plausible—after all, how can something established keep pace with the new kids on the block? Yet, this underestimates the power of Node.js and MongoDB, both stars in handling I/O-bound tasks and massive volumes of data respectively.
The Reality Check: Node.js is tailor-made for real-time, high-concurrency applications, while MongoDB excels in managing large datasets with aplomb. Far from being overwhelmed, the MEAN stack is often the engine powering major companies’ applications, easily managing the complexities of modern web environments.
Myth 3: MEAN Stack Lacks Community Support
As shiny new frameworks and stacks emerge, it’s tempting to think that the MEAN stack has been left without a paddle. Yet, the reality is quite the opposite. The global MEAN stack community is as enthusiastic and active as ever. From extensive documentation and regular meetups to continuous enhancements, the community’s heartbeat is strong.
The Reality Check: The real strength of any technology lies in the people behind it—their passion, their innovations, and their willingness to help each other solve problems. The MEAN stack benefits from a community that’s as dynamic and robust as the technologies themselves.
Myth 4: MEAN Stack is Rigid
Critics often point out that the MEAN stack locks you into specific technologies, lacking the flexibility of other, more modern solutions that allow you to mix and match technologies at will. While it’s true that MEAN promotes a particular combination of technologies, this integration is actually one of its greatest strengths.
The Reality Check: The synergy between MongoDB, Express.js, AngularJS, and Node.js provides a seamless development experience, reducing complexity and speeding up project timelines. And yet, flexibility is at your fingertips, with the freedom to swap in alternatives like React in place of AngularJS if your project demands it.
Myth 5: The MEAN Stack is Only for Large Applications
Another prevalent myth is that the MEAN stack is only suitable for large-scale applications, making it overly complex for smaller projects. This misconception can deter developers from utilizing the stack for simpler applications, leading to missed opportunities.
The Reality Check: The MEAN stack is versatile and can be effectively used for both small and large applications. Its modular design allows developers to scale their applications as needed, making it an excellent choice for startups and small projects looking to grow without significant rework.
Myth 6: Learning the MEAN Stack is Too Difficult
Many aspiring developers believe that mastering the MEAN stack requires extensive knowledge and experience, making it an intimidating choice for newcomers to web development. This belief can create a barrier to entry for those eager to learn.
The Reality Check: While the MEAN stack does encompass multiple technologies, its reliance on JavaScript throughout the stack simplifies the learning curve. Many resources, tutorials, and community support are available, making it accessible for beginners to start building applications quickly.
Now, lastly before closing the discussion let us quickly understand a few trends in MEAN Stack development usage

React.JS: A Bliss or Woe for Developers?
Tumblr media
What is React.JS?
React.JS is a multi-purpose, open-source JavaScript framework and library used for front-end development focusing on building interactive user interfaces (UI) and web applications faster and better. One can develop their applications by creating reusable components. These components are individual pieces of a final interface, which can be assembled to form the application’s entire user interface.
The primary role of react is to handle the view layer of the application by providing efficient execution just like the V in a model view controller (MVC). Rather than handling the whole user interface as one unit, React.JS allows developers to separate these complex UIs into individual reusable components which form the building blocks of the whole UI which helps the ReactJS framework to combine the speed and efficiency of JavaScript with a more efficient method of manipulating the DOM to render web pages faster and create highly dynamic and responsive web applications.
Origin of ReactJS
“The biggest mistake we made as a company was betting too much on HTML as opposed to native," said Mark Zuckerberg. He promised Facebook would soon deliver a better mobile experience.
Later, In 2011 ReactJS was created by one of the Software Engineers on Facebook named Jordan Walke and was utilized by the company for its news section. In 2012, One of the subsidiaries of Facebook, Instagram also started using it. Looking into the problem solved by React.JS Facebook made it open-sourced in the year 2013. In the beginning, developers didn’t support it because it used Markup and JavaScript in a single file. But as more people experimented with it, they started embracing the component-centric approach for separating concerns.
In 2014, many large companies across the globe started using React.JS in their production environments.
Features of React.JS
1.  JSX:  JSX is an abbreviation for JavaScript XML. It is an extension of JavaScript Syntax. It combines HTML syntax with JavaScript directly to make it easier for developers to interact with the browser. It is type-safe, and most of the errors can be found at compilation time. It is easy to create a template using JSX in React.
2. Virtual DOM: It is a DOM object representation that helps in creating a virtual copy of the original DOM object by web browsers for simplifying the process of keeping track of updates in real time. React maintains two virtual DOMs in which the first one contains the updated virtual DOM and the other is a pre-updated version of the updated virtual DOM. When comparing the current virtual DOM with the previous one is known as 'defying'. Once React knows what has changed, it updates the objects in the actual DOM.
3. Performance: As we discussed earlier, react uses virtual DOM and updates only the modified parts which make the DOM run faster. DOM executes in memory so we can create separate components which helps in the efficiency of the DOM.
4. One-way Data Binding: One-way data binding, as the name itself suggests that it is a one-direction flow. The data in react flows only in one direction which means the data is transferred from top to bottom i.e., from parent components to child components. The properties in the child component cannot return the data to its parent component but it can have communication with the parent components to modify the states according to the provided inputs. It helps in keeping everything modular and fast.
5. Extension: React has many extensions which can be used to create full-fledged UI applications. It supports mobile Application Development and helps in providing server-side rendering. React is extended with Flux, Redux, React Native, etc. which helps to create a good-looking User Interface.
6. Simplicity: React.JS is component-based which helps in making the code reusable. It uses JSX which is a combination of HTML and JavaScript. This makes code easy to understand for everyone.
React supports more features like routing, debugging, API interaction, and state management. It is the best choice when it comes to rendering data.
Benefits of ReactJS for Front-end Development
1. Performance: React JS prioritizes high performance as its core design principle. The framework offers a dual DOM programming model and server-side rendering, enabling the seamless execution of complex applications with remarkable speed and efficiency.
2. Reusable Components: One of the main benefits of using ReactJS is its potential to reuse components. This time-saving feature allows developers to focus their efforts on other aspects of the application's development. Additionally, ReactJS ensures that changes made to a specific component have no adverse effects on other parts of the application, providing a robust and isolated development environment.
 3. Speed: By enabling the utilization of specific application parts on both the client and server sides, ReactJS significantly enhances the speed of the development process. This means that different developers can work on distinct components independently, without introducing conflicts or interfering with the overall application logic, resulting in efficient development and streamlined collaboration.
4. Flexibility: Compared to other frontend frameworks, the React code is easier to maintain and is flexible due to its modular structure. This flexibility, in turn, saves a huge amount of time and cost for businesses. Deploying React is fairly easy to accomplish if you have some basic knowledge of JavaScript. An expert JavaScript developer can easily learn all ins and outs of the React framework in a matter of a day or two.
This framework offers various benefits to both developers as well as business owners. It's no surprise that this framework gained popularity quickly and is still on the rise.
Why is React so popular among the Developer Community?
1.   Easy to Grasp: One of the main reasons for the wide adoption of React.JS is that it’s easy to grasp the fundamentals of React, especially if you already are a pro at JavaScript. You can install React and be up and running in a few hours, getting straight up to building web applications. The documentation is clear and there is a lot of it. Furthermore, the short learning curve means less downtime learning—allowing you to operate sooner.
2.   Easy to Scale: React is built to be extremely versatile to easily integrate with other third-party libraries and frameworks in your tech stack. React apps happily scale to hundreds or even thousands of components. It doesn’t create any unnecessary barriers for developers to build complex applications.
3.   Testing & Functionality: With ReactJS, developers can utilize ecmascript6 modules to define dependencies and make use of tools like Babel and React. di. These modules are easy to test and can be considered as the current state's functionality. They can be observed for changes in triggered functions, outputs, events, and more. It's important to test them before using them, and ReactJS simplifies the testing process, making it much easier to ensure the desired functionality.
4.   Increase Productivity: As discussed earlier, react does a lot to simplify and speed up processes. It is great at streamlining workflows, but there is one feature that most developers rejoice at, and that is reusable components.
The efficiency of React with minimal coding, possible rendering performance, JSX syntax, and extra simplicity and flexibility are the prime reasons behind the growing popularity of React.
These features also make React coding the first choice of tech giants like Facebook, PayPal, WhatsApp, Uber, Instagram, Airbnb, and many others.
Frequently Asked Questions:

A programming language is a set of rules, symbols, and syntax used to create instructions that can be executed by a computer. These instructions, also called codes, can be used to tell the computer to perform various tasks such as: B. Perform calculations, display information on screen, store and edit data, and communicate with other devices.
There are many different programming languages, each designed for a specific purpose or to solve a specific kind of problem. Some programming languages are general purpose and can be used to write a wide variety of programs, while others are used specifically to write programs for a particular application or environment.
Programming languages are used by software developers to write code to create software programs and applications. It is also used by researchers, data scientists, and other professionals who use computers to solve complex problems and analyse data.
What are libraries?
A programming language library is a collection of ready-made code that programs can use to perform specific tasks. Libraries are often used to provide a set of common functions that many different programs need, so developers don't have to write the same code over and over again. Libraries can contain different types of code, such as functions, classes, data structures, and other types of code.
They can be written in the same programming language as the programs that use them, or they can be written in another language and accessed through an application programming interface (API).
There are many programming languages in use today, and each language has its own set of libraries. Here are some of the most popular programming languages and some of the libraries that are commonly used with them:
