J20161110-0095—Munzothamnus blairii—RPBG—DxO by John Rusk Via Flickr: Munzothamnus blairii—Blair's wirelettuce. The species is included in the CNPS Inventory of Rare and Endangered Plants on list 1B.2 (rare, threatened, or endangered in CA and elsewhere). Once a candidate for extinction, the species prospects are brighter now that feral goats have been removed from San Clemente Island, the only place the wirelettuce grows. M. blairii was once placed in the genus Stephanomeria but both morphological and DNA analysis show that the species deserves a genus of its own. Those interested in such matters should read the Flora of North America treatment of the species. Photographed at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA.
