Sexypink - RITES, RITUALS, MEMORIES AND MORE CROP OVER VISUAL ARTS EXHIBITION OPENS THURSDAY. Barbados Today News. “The first event produced by the National Cultural Foundation (NCF) for Crop Over 2023 starts next week and runs throughout the Season of Emancipation. On Africa Day, Thursday, May 25, 2023, the NCF will host the official opening of the Central Bank of Barbados Crop Over Visual Arts Exhibition entitled We Came on Merchant Ships. The following day, Friday, May 26, the three-part exhibition will then be open for public viewing at the Queen’s Park Gallery until Thursday, June 22.The series of exhibitions seek to visually explore the concept of the necessity of trade for growth and expansion and all the consequences, rewards and challenges that come from migration, free, forced or otherwise. The first exhibition, We Came on Merchant Ships – Movement, examines movement in its many forms. The works of 29 artists will be on show.
The exhibition captures the reason people move, modalities for movement and the various cultural manifestations of migration - forced and free. Special emphasis will be placed on the transatlantic slave trade.NCF’s Curator Oneka Small admits that although the topic is a tough one to approach, the Foundation was excited to showcase such a serious yet sensitive project using art. “Curating this one has not been an easy task simply because it is a painful period in our history, especially the show, which focuses a lot on the transatlantic slave trade. So we are very excited though to be presenting the information through multimedia presentations such as photography,” she said. She added: “We have digital work. We also have sculptures.
Some amazing pieces by amazing artists. We want to keep them under wraps so that you come excited on Friday, May 26, to see the show. It is a mixed medium, multimedia, all genre show. We are very happy to be presenting such a show this year.”Small is curating the exhibition alongside colleague NCF’s Visual Arts Officer Rodney Ifill, who commended the artists for stepping up and exploring the topic. “We have 29 wonderful artists. We have so many artists on the island and I am glad that they responded to the theme because the whole idea of introducing themes like this is to get people to think, to research and then you become better for it. At the end of the day, you are now collecting a pool of knowledge that you would have gone away with in terms of your own personal interrogation and presenting your sensibility to the public,” he noted. The second exhibition, We Came on Merchant Ships – Memories and Identity, which runs from Friday, June 30, to Thursday, July 27, the artists seek to interrogate the intangible aspects of trade.
How do memories express themselves in displaced people? How is identity maintained, retained, or assimilated within the new land of settlement? The third exhibition, We Came of Merchant Ships – Rites, Ritual and Religion running from Friday, August 4 to Thursday, August 31 will see artists visually explore the continuation of rites, rituals and religion from the lands from which the present people of Barbados originated, for example, the Spiritual Baptist, Christianity and the rise of traditional African religions such as the practice of Yoruba, Hindu and other faiths. For more information on details relating to the Exhibition, please contact Oneka Small via email at [email protected] and Rodney Ifill Visual Arts Officer via email at rodney-ifill@ncf. bb (PR)”

If you were an academic, would you remain in a state which is willing to prosecute you if you deviate from the governor's political line?
With the start of the 2023-24 academic year only six weeks away, senior officials at New College of Florida (NCF) made a startling announcement in mid-July: 36 of the small honors college’s approximately 100 full-time teaching positions were vacant. The provost, Bradley Thiessen, described the number of faculty openings as “ridiculously high”, and the disclosure was the latest evidence of a brain drain afflicting colleges and universities throughout the Sunshine state.
Governor Ron DeSantis opened 2023 with the appointment of six political allies to the college’s 13-member board of trustees who vowed to drastically alter the supposedly “woke”-friendly learning environment on its Sarasota campus. At its first meeting in late January, the revamped panel voted to fire the college president, Patricia Okker, without cause and appoint a former Republican state legislator and education commissioner in her place.
Over the ensuing weeks, board members have dismissed the college’s head librarian and director of diversity programs and denied tenure to five professors who had been recommended for approval.
Essentially, the DeSantis education gestapo is killing off the institution — or at least making it very unattractive to students to the left of Mussolini. Of course it's not just NCF that's been affected.
The new laws have introduced a ban on the funding of diversity, equity and inclusion programs at Florida’s public colleges and universities, withdrawn a right to arbitration formerly guaranteed to faculty members who have been denied tenure or face dismissal, and prohibited the teaching of critical race theory, which contends that inherent racial bias pervades many laws and institutions in western society, among other changes.
In the face of that and other legislation backed by DeSantis and Republican lawmakers that has rolled back the rights of Florida’s LGBTQ+ community, many scholars across the state are taking early retirement, voting with their feet by accepting job offers outside Florida or simply throwing in the towel with a letter of resignation.
[ ... ]
The prevailing political climate in Florida has complicated efforts to recruit qualified scholars from outside the state to fill some vacancies. Kenneth Nunn served on a number of appointment committees during the more than 30 years he spent on the faculty of the University of Florida’s law school. He said the task of persuading highly qualified applicants of color to move to Gainesville has never been more difficult under a governor who, earlier this year, prohibited a new advanced placement course in African American studies from being taught in high schools.
DeSantis came under renewed criticism this month when the state department of education issued guidelines recommending that middle school students be taught about the skills slaves acquired “for their personal benefit” during their lifetimes in bondage.
DeSantis is so fond of slavery that every public college and university in Florida is now an anti-woke plantation run by a DeSantis overseer.
Degrees from public educational institutions in the state may henceforth be looked upon like those from Trump University.

NCF boosts economic value of 1000 Nigerians, plants 276, 860 in 2023
The Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) says it boosted the economic value of 1000 Nigerians and planted 276, 860 in 2023 through its Green Recovery Nigeria (GRN) Programme,
This is contained in a statement signed by Mr Oladapo Soneye, Head Communications, NCF, and made available to newsmen on Thursday in Lagos.
Soneye said that the overall goal of the GRN Programme was to contribute and facilitate a reforestation scheme in 25 per cent of Nigeria’s total landmass.
According to him, GRN is a 30-year Programme that will run from 2017 to 2047, while simultaneously promoting actions to curb further deforestation and forest degradation.
He mentioned some other activities of the programme to include fuel-efficient cook stove training, provision of clean water, employment as eco-guards, tree nursery raising, enterprise development around non-timber forest products and many others.
He noted that the livelihood support component of the GRN Programme was to reduce total dependence of communities on the forest; to reduce deforestation caused by fuel-wood extraction, encourage conservation of wildlife, and prevent hideouts of criminals in the forest reserves.
He listed some of the beneficiary communities in the livelihood component to include Iko Esai and Becheve in Cross River; Ajingi in Kano; Guzape in Abuja; Awka- Etiti in Anambra, among others.
“The tree planting exercise happened across the six geo-political zones of the nation.
“Economic trees planted include avocado, mango, cashew, orange; and timber trees like Melina and teak etc.
“The trees were planted in forest reserves, National Parks, community forests, secondary schools, and tertiary institutions among others,” Soneye said.
He said that the livelihood support and tree planting projects were made possible through the support of the German Government through the Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union, Germany (NABU), and Stanbic IBTC Holdings.
He mentioned others who supported the programme to include Access Corporation, AFR100, Pernod Ricard Nigeria, International Labour Organisation (ILO), First Bank of Nigeria Ltd, British American Tobacco Nigeria Foundation, ATC Nigeria Wireless Infrastructure Ltd, and many others.
The Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) is the foremost environmental NGO dedicated to nature conservation and biodiversity resource management for over 40 years.
It has remained resolute in ensuring that people live and prosper in harmony with nature.

The basic premise of the game is that (nearly) every player starts as a human, wearing a red wristband. One or two players will start as the first zombies, wearing a green wristband.
The goal for humans is to make it to the end of the game without being turned by using squirt guns to defend themselves and their fellow survivors. The goal for zombies is to tag (and therefore turn) as many humans as possible, collect tagged humans’ wristbands and grow the zombie horde.

Sexypink - “The first installation of the Central Bank of Barbados Crop Over Visual Arts 2023 three part exhibition - We Came on Merchant Ships will end this Thursday.Produced by the National Cultural Foundation (NCF) the exhibition has been on display at the Queen’s Park Gallery since late May and takes viewers on a trip across the Atlantic to explore the movements of trade and people and delve into the often unspoken histories that have shaped the world today.Curated to portray the dynamic movements of people and the complex reasons behind them, this exhibition promises to transcend the traditional modalities of historical representation.
It delves into the intricate tapestry of migration, trade, and human resilience that have birthed our vibrant Caribbean culture.Renowned artist, Shane Eastmond, known for his deeply evocative work, anchors the exhibition with his piece Black and White. This stirring masterpiece draws inspiration from a photo taken by Kyle Babb of Eastmond’s childhood friend, and seeks to contrast history’s documentations.“Black and White focuses on the pain that we have experienced in the past as people and the love we have learnt here in the future,” said Eastmond.
Another key highlight is the abstract work Betrayed, crafted by the multi-talented forensic scientist-turned-visual artist, Sharon Antoinette.
This piece presents a heartbreaking story of survival, betrayal, and sacrifice. Two canvases, linked by chains, and layered with keys hidden beneath crosses, evoke the haunting memory of merchant ships crossing the Middle Passage.
The artist recalled that creating Betrayed was a deeply emotional process for her.“It was heart-wrenching,” she exclaimed.
The piece serves as a stark reminder of the profound pain endured by those who crossed the Middle Passage, many of whom were betrayed by their own for survival. The second exhibition, We Came on Merchant Ships – Movement, starts next month and promises to be more than an art exhibition, paying tribute to the strength of our ancestors, and sounding a clarion call to remember and learn from history.” (PR)Barbados Today

For Grand Kadooment 2023 I was on the road with @fifthelementmas246 I enjoy supporting local designers and this year I wanted to support Kevin Small. My section was Bloom. My costume that was cute and conservative which I felt very comfortable wearing. I love the colours in the outfit top and I think I will rock it during independence lol. I drank water & ginger ale while chatting with new people I met. I Loved running into familiar faces I’ve not seen in a while. The Fifth Element experience was really nice!! Now a lot of things went wrong today. This the wait for the bands to start was excruciating. Yea we know the rain fell. Yes we know trucks broke down! BUT NCF really needs to work out the logistics of returning to the old route and get it right if they are going to continue along this route next year. I found it very disrespectful that bands which were ready were sidelined and ordered to pull aside so the large “bougie” bands could go ahead. Many of the bands did not parade in order. This was not fair to those who were prepared and waiting. Good thing I packed some Good Time Snacks to nibble on!! The roads are way too narrow and with people lining the streets on both sides it quickly became congested. Kudos to the police and BDF who did their best to maintain order. Having been at our meeting point from 10am and having to wait until the trucks arrived around 3:30pm to parade in front the judges at minutes to 5pm It was not looking like I would make it to Spring Garden during daylight. By 6:19 our band had made it to the bottom of Station Hill. It was quickly becoming dark. Certain places I don’t like to be on foot don’t care how much “security” is around. Shortly after I heard of a shooting incident down Black Rock. That was my cue to exit the band and make my way home. I got home safely, had a nice shower and ate my Sunday food! Have a good night all. #itisover #cropover2023 #myopinion #fifthelement #kevinsmall #untilnextyear
