We are now celebrating the centennial of the #Paulist #ministry in #Rome / #Roma, #Italy / #Italia with #Catholic #expats and visitors (and other English-language speakers). Today, the ministry is based at St. Patrick's Catholic American Parish. One of #Paulists who served in the #EternalCity was Paulist Fr. Earl Jarrett (pictured: 1896 - 1972). From the Paulist Archives: "Earl Monahan Jarrett was born in #Fiskdale (#Sturbridge), #Massachusetts, on December 17, 1896. "He went to a local private school and later attended Harvard's Naval Ensign School. Upon receiving his commission in the U.S. Navy, he served at sea during World War I. Discharged from the #Navy in 1921, he entered the Paulist community the same year. He made his first profession on February 2, 1925, and was ordained a priest on March 8, 1925. "Fr. Jarrett's first assignment as a priest was to the Church of Santa Susanna for American Catholics in Rome, where he served as vice-rector from 1926 to 1929, and gained proficiency in the Italian language. "He then served from 1929 to 1932 in San Francisco as a curate at Old St. Mary's Church, where he founded the parish radio station. "After serving at the American parish in Rome again from 1932 to 1935, he then joined the mission band based at Saint Paul the Apostle Church in New York. He continued in that position until 1943 when he volunteered for naval duty in World War II. He served as a Lieutenant in the #NavyChaplain Corps until his discharge in 1946. "After his military service, Fr. Jarrett completed graduate studies in psychology at Catholic University and, after stints in Chicago and San Diego, he began a decade as Director of the #NewmanCenter at @UCLA in Los Angeles from 1947 to 1957 (@CatholicBruin). "After brief assignments in Clemson, South Carolina, and Saint Paul's College in Washington, DC, in 1959, he returned to parish work at Old Saint Mary's in San Francisco. "He retired in 1968, and passed away after a brief illness in San Francisco on March 19, 1972. He was 75 years old and had served for 47 years as a Paulist priest."
