That’s what my friends asked me when we arrived on our last Greek island. Coming to Greece from British Columbia is a BIG trip, and we’ve come 5 times! We’ve visited other islands but somehow Naxos always makes it onto the itinerary, so yes, we’ve been 5 times to Naxos. This statistic made their question a valid one.
We had just arrived and were walking to our accommodation when they asked me this question. I actually bumbled through the answer, “The people are so friendly, it’s a big island, it’s affordable, we love the beaches”…a kind of vague answer really. After all, we had arrived on a rare cloudy day, and without the sparkling sunshine, or twinkly atmospheric lights in the evening, the marina area did look plain, even a bit tawdry.
However, as we began to move about the Naxos we love, why we love it all came back to us. First, there really ARE wonderful people. We arrived at the village Lionas, on the other side of the island, by scooter. There are two tavernas. One has a man waving and welcoming us in. After a swim, some rock hounding by my friends, and a little drying off, we headed there for lunch. As one of my friends said in her social media post, “Most authentic Greek moment!! Scooter ride on Naxos to the East coast to this little gem in Lionas. Family run, amazingly good, the owner kept giving us free wine, food, and such hospitality!” His wife recognized Craig and I from previous visits, and although she didn’t speak English, she let me know that she recognized us.
We also visited a potter whose work graces our kitchen back home in Canada. Again, we were recognized. He created a piece of pottery while we were there, then gave us a tour of some traditional Naxos pieces, explaining the function of each, and how they worked.
It’s people like this, and experiences like these that make Naxos special for me. Riding a scooter also allows you to get away from the more crowded areas and out on the open, albeit mountainous with many switch backs, roads, to see what’s really going on out there. Here’s what you find: goats and their owner…

And donkeys working, in this instance hauling wood.
Sharing this gem on an island with good friends, enjoying good food, sunshine, and relaxation…what’s not to love?
