Yep for whatever reason couples that were a Neanderthal man x sapiens woman had an easier time producing viable offspring than couples who were a Neanderthal woman x sapiens man
So if anything it's where modern humans get their taste for short stocky kings. Like me, so that's nice
Do we have data on whether the earliest modern human x neanderthal crosses were more commonly produced by a neanderthal man and sapiens sapiens woman, or vice versa?
Do we have some neanderthal woman to blame for the species' apparent instinct to see a weirdly long lanky skinny frail man and instantly get the urge to mount him?
#this is lighthearted and im not taking it seriously but there is something bugging me#in the notes someone says they read something suggesting the crossbreeding was the result of#Neanderthals abducting and impregnating sapiens women#and i havent seen that claim and its been a few years since i got my anthro degree#but that is the type of edgelord suggestion i would take with a huge grain of salt#like the theory that suggested Neanderthals and other human subspecies went extinct because sapiens sapiens wiped them out#for one even if neanderthals and sapiens were abducting each other and mating#which very well could have happened#why would it only happen in one direction#i see something like that and it feels like one of those things that unfairly paints neanderthals as brutish#when we have evidence of friendly contact between sapiens and neanderthals as well so even if mate capture stuff was going on that probably#wasnt like every crossbred offspring produced!#especially since there are plenty of reasons when it comes to interspecies reproduction why there would be survivorship bias#for the offspring of one parental configuration vs the other#like its a pretty common thing with hybrids#features carried on the x chromosome for example that can make things easier or be detrimental to a hybrid#or incompatibility between the mothers anatomy and the fetus that makes birth dangerous#which#someone else in the notes says they saw a study suggesting that applies here#which i am much more given to believe#given that sapiens babies have big round heads#and iirc female neanderthals didnt have quite as accomodating pelvises for that#which would have made birth very difficult#like i havent read either of these papers but i know when my bs meter is triggered#long rant in the tags sorry

#this is lighthearted and im not taking it seriously but there is something bugging me #in the notes someone says they read something suggesting the crossbreeding was the result of #Neanderthals abducting and impregnating sapiens women #and i havent seen that claim and its been a few years since i got my anthro degree #but that is the type of edgelord suggestion i would take with a huge grain of salt #like the theory that suggested Neanderthals and other human subspecies went extinct because sapiens sapiens wiped them out #for one even if neanderthals and sapiens were abducting each other and mating #which very well could have happened #why would it only happen in one direction
#i see something like that and it feels like one of those things that unfairly paints neanderthals as brutish #when we have evidence of friendly contact between sapiens and neanderthals as well so even if mate capture stuff was going on that probably #wasnt like every crossbred offspring produced! #especially since there are plenty of reasons when it comes to interspecies reproduction why there would be survivorship bias #for the offspring of one parental configuration vs the other
#like its a pretty common thing with hybrids #features carried on the x chromosome for example that can make things easier or be detrimental to a hybrid #or incompatibility between the mothers anatomy and the fetus that makes birth dangerous #which #someone else in the notes says they saw a study suggesting that applies here#which i am much more given to believe#given that sapiens babies have big round heads #and iirc female neanderthals didnt have quite as accomodating pelvises for that #which would have made birth very difficult
#like i havent read either of these papers but i know when my bs meter is triggered (via @libraryspectre)
libraryspectre your tags pass peer review. Specifically because it means I don't have to type it all out myself XD
