Analog Photography

As one of the many innovators in Photography, Alfred Stieglitz was central in defining photography as a modern art form. His knowledge and skill with the camera radically changed photography from a mechanical craft to an art medium. Stieglitz's work is a reflection of his efforts to prove to America and the world that photography was a modern visual art.

Born on January 1st, 1864 in Hoboken, New Jersey to German immigrants Edward and Hedwig Steglitz. Alfred’s parents later moved to Manhattan on the upper east side. They made it an effort to enrich their children in education and the arts, as appreciators of the arts themselves. According to Alfred, he had many photographs taken of him, mainly because his mother “took great pleasure in having [him] photographed, [and]show portraits to her friends ”(20). But what most intrigued him was what went down in the darkrooms where he’d see photographers go in to develop the pictures. In 1882 Alfred traveled to Berlin, Germany to study abroad. He initially studied engineering but found the classes un-enriching to his education. He later bought his first camera and enrolled in a Photochemistry course by Dr. Hermann Wilhelm Vogel. There he learned in depth the technicality of photochemistry. His first camera was an 8 x 10 plate film camera with no shutter and required a tripod. The photos taken on this camera were printed on “the smoothest possible platinum” paper imported from England. Later throughout his career, he would use the Folmer & Schwing, Eastman, Kodak, and Reflex cameras. His early photographs as a student were made up of picturesque scenes that were compared to the framework of a painting. The techniques used to craft his photographs were platinum palladium prints. These were chemicals that could expose the chemical painted paper and could be manipulated into tones of black, gray, and brown.

Stieglitz’s style of photography is categorized in the American Modernism Art Movement. From the late 19th century to the mid-20th century, Modernism was an art movement that strived to break away from past/dated forms of expression. The art movement was the rejection of Victorian values and ideals about art. It embraced experimentalism as the final form was from abstractions. There was an emphasis on the materials used and the techniques used to perfect such abstract qualities. The narrative that speaks throughout his art is the intimate relationship he has with nature, and the people he admires. His art is the love and appreciation of the world and the connection humans have with it. He photographed objects and moments that he awed, but others deemed unimportant or ugly –“Recalling those early days, I remember my father coming upon me as I was photographing in the middle of Fifth Avenue. “Alfred, he said to me, “how can you be interested in that hideous building?” “Why, Pa '' I replied, “it is not hideous, but the new America” (45). Stieglitz had a very passionate drive to produce photographs. His methodology consisted of experimentalism and innovation, because his goal was to re-imagine photography and share stories of American life. Art critics of Stieglitz's time like Sadakichi Hartmann, also noted that Stieglitz’s craft “ lies in his bold independence which enabled him to resist all temptations to overstep the limits of photography. He never applied anything but photography "pure and simple" and disdained the assistance of retouching… He realizes that artistic photography, to become powerful and self-subsistent, must rely upon its own resources and not ornament itself with foreign plumes in order to resemble an etching, a charcoal or wash drawing, or the reproduction of an old master”. His methods were often seen as rebellious as he was “told that the camera and its materials had inherent limits, [nonetheless] he defied them” in order to go beyond the standard (9). Another example was “when told that the camera could only be used in daylight. He shut up his camera in a cellar illuminated only by a weak electric light bulb, focused on a dynamo, and made a 24-hour exposure. The resulting negative was a perfect one, effectively refuting the necessity of daylight for photography”(10).

The reason I chose Alfred Stieglitz was because I was drawn to the portraits of famous modernist artist, Georgia O’Keeffe. The book I found in the full collection of photographs was titled –Georgia O'Keeffe: A Portrait by Alfred Stieglitz– which opened up with an introductory summary of Stieglitz’s life and personal accounts by O’Keeffe herself. Stieglitz began photographing O’Keeffe shortly after their relationship began and throughout their marriage. These portraits of O’Keeffe were specifically capturing the most intimate parts of her body that made her an artist. Her hands are a prominent motif that repeats in these portraits as they are positioned as the focal point of the photograph, to the point of obsession. O’Keeffe was Stieglitz’s artistic muse and lover as the two artists inspired the other. Throughout their relationship, Stieglitz captured the contorting dance-like movements in her hands to her focused eyes and nude body. Even O’Keefe mentioned that “his (Stieglitz) idea of a portrait was not just in one picture. His dream was to start with a child at birth and photograph that child in all its activities as it grew to be a person and on throughout its adult life. As a portrait it would be a photographic diary” (O'Keeffe). Stieglitz’s attention to composition and camera angles are what most caught my attention as they are so skillfully intimate and beautiful.

Strayed Utopian at EST Galerie

EST Galerie is delighted to invite Karén Khachaturov and present his distinctive selection of photographs «Strayed Utopian» from years 2016 – 2022 in the 11th area of Paris March, 30 – April 5, 2023.

Karén Khachaturov’s work is vibrant, playfull and surrealist. Yerevan, Armenia born and based photographer, delicately wrap real people and complex subjects into his pastel universe. The visual resonance between the color palette (Utopie) and bizzare personages in his latest body of work facilitates the discourse of Dystopia without words.

His career as a photographer began with taking pictures documenting the street but soon after he chose to focus on portrait photography. It seduces thanks to a memorable soft yet striking visual imprint which has become his signature. Slowly, he stepped into fashion and commercial photography, which also shaped his artistic vision. He often uses the commercial colours and pop surrealistic entourages to open a conversation about the new reality- the digital era. In his pastel coloured universe the objects seem to stay the same, but have lost their primal essence.

His works are focusing on the modern sense of the alienation and the loss of empirical experience. In most of his works, the heroes are half people half objects, who look senseless and bored from the alienated communications and the mass cultivated individualism, which as a result turned them into good looking objects with bright entertaining colors, but lack of actual characteristics or senses.

The artist has exhibited his work worldwide from Tel Aviv, Beijing, Shenzhen, Tbilisi, New York to Yerevan and Paris. He also has published several photo books including "Pastel Poetry" in 2019 and "Dystopia" in 2021 but his taste for art and his talent does not stop there. Karén Khachaturov is also a composer of hip-hop music.

“ The consumerism has changed the concept of happiness turning it from a never-ending source of motivation into a one more “Must Have”. A color to try, a device to use, a shape to wear and a feeling to experience. The happiness in the frames of it has to suit certain rules. Anything othervised from those rules may be excluded from its concept, denied and forgotten, because it creates a brick in the perfectly retouched consumeristic world.”

The opening will take place in the presence of the artist on Thursday March 30, 2023 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the EST Galerie, 76 rue Saint Maur, 75011. The event will mark the start for the gallery in its pursuit to build a cultural dialogue between the Eastern Paris and contemporary art scene of Armenia.

Research (Read and Highlight information)

I was born in April 1985 outside a small town called Götene in the middle south of Sweden. I grew up on a farm with my parents and two younger sisters and I spent a lot of time in nature. For as long as I can remember I have liked drawing. Maybe because of my grandmother who was a painter, or maybe because that's how I always liked to express myself. When my mom asked me how my day in school was I would rather draw a comic showing how it was. My dad got a computer for work already in the mid 80's so I also early developed an interest in computers, mostly by escaping to other worlds through computer games. At the age of 15 I got my first digital camera, a very simple point-and-shoot Fuji camera, but it opened up a new world to me. Being used to the process of drawing it felt quite strange to be done after capturing a photo, it wasn't the process of creating something in the same way as drawing. You didn't start with a white empty paper, once you pressed the trigger you were done. I felt like I wanted to do something more to the photos, where pressing the trigger would only be the start. Having an interest in computers made it quite a natural step to start there. I was playing around with the photos in the computer trying to create something that you couldn't capture with the camera, mostly very basic modifications like changing color or putting my little sisters on our roof top. That is how my interest in photo manipulation started, I learned by trying but it wouldn't become a profession until years later.

I was quite good at mathematics and physics in school and liked the science behind how things work. I went for the natural science program in high school and in 2005 I moved to Gothenburg to study Computer engineering at Chalmers University of Technology. By that time I didn't have any plans on doing the photography for a living, I couldn't imagine it to be a real profession, it was just a fun hobby and didn't really believe that fun and work could be combined. But during my time studying my friend Eric bought a DSLR (Canon EOS 350d). This camera was something completely different from the simple point and shoot cameras I had tried up until this point. I was out taking pictures with Eric a few times and it led to me also getting a DSLR (Canon EOS 400d) the year after. I took up my interest for photography and photo manipulation once again but this time having a better camera I felt like I wanted to spend more time manipulating them as well. I had learned the basics by playing around in Photoshop and I started spending more time on each photo.

I had a lot of ideas that I wanted to bring to life and it was a lot about problem solving trying to make it look as realistic as possible. After publishing some of my images online I started to get requests helping out with some retouch for a few local advertisement agencies. I slowly started freelancing in parallel with my studies while still working on my personal projects. I got more and more work requests and by the time I finished my studies with a master in Interaction Design I felt like I rather wanted to try out the photography path, at least for a while to see how it went. It was time to change environment after 5 years in Gothenburg so I moved to Norrköping in the eastern part of Sweden to try out the life of a freelance. I made new friends and work slowly stared to take off. At first for some advertisement agencies in the town but by having my work published online I also stared to get international requests. In early 2012 it was time for something new again and I packed my bags for Berlin, Germany. I've always thought that inspiration lies within the contrast between things and I think moving from time to time can be very inspiring. Once again I had to restart, meet new friends and get to know a new city. I had 4 great years there but in November 2015 I moved once more to Prague, Czech Republic, and that is where I am currently based. I'm still new to the city and I'm excited to see what it can bring. Although I'm moving around Sweden and the north european landscapes is something that I'm constantly coming back to for taking pictures and finding inspiration. I believe that inspiration lies in the contrast between things.

Today I work as a full photographer on personal and commissioned projects. But I also do unusual projects like a street retouch pranks or anamorphic illusion installations, I like a challenge and to play with peoples perception of what we think is reality. I’ve been working with clients such as Volvo, Toyota, Google, Adobe, Microsoft and National Geographic. I love doing my personal projects but it's also satisfying making someone else's vision come to life. I think growing up on the Swedish countryside had a big impact on my visual style. A lot of the environments in my photos are captured near places I know, around my parents’ home with wide open landscapes and small red houses. Inspiration is everywhere and once you learn the tools you're only limited by your own imagination. I feel like I'm just getting stared for real, there are so many more projects waiting to be put to life.

I've spoken at some conferences including the TED conference in London in 2011. In early 2016 I released my first book "IMAGINE" featuring the first 9 years of my personal projects.

Erik Johansson

Erik Johansson isn’t as concerned with capturing moments as he is ideas. The Swedish-born, Berlin-based photographer and retoucher creates layered photo illustrations that combine landscapes and surreal concepts.

Photographer Li Wei The Chinese photographer Li Wei became widely known for his extraordinary photos, on which he distorts the possibility so that people depicted in the pictures, as if would be in a state of weightlessness, flight or falling from a huge height. What is most interesting, Li Wei does not apply computer graphics or editing when creating photographs. Each photo is preceded by a long preparation and correct technical calculations. In order to transform the illusion into reality, the Chinese photo artist resorts to using iron cables, mirrors, acrobatics and scaffolding. Li Wei perfectly knows what is mirror illusion photography and how with it you can project your own image anywhere. His works refer to the pictures that play with your eyes.

Photos of him are successfully demonstrated at exhibitions in the world and are published on the covers of many respectable publications.

Chema Madoz Another photographer working in this direction is the Spaniard Jose Maria Rodriguez Madoz, who creates black-and-white optical illusions hidden objects under the pseudonym Chema Madoz. He is fully confident that everyday things and objects can imagine new worlds, it is only necessary to look at them in a new way. Chema Madoz creates on his own photographs tremendous illusions, which bring the opposition of reality and the illusory world to the point of nonsense.

The photographer sees his main task in forcing a person to think non-stereotypically, without any limitations and red lines. On his pictures it is possible to notice the amazing forms and imagination of space, hidden among simple things. Chema Madoz opens up to the public a new perception of reality, a parallel world that excites the minds and explores new horizons.

"Things are Looking Native"

Nicholas Galanin is a multi-disciplinary artist and musician of mixed Tlingit/Aleut and non-Native ancestry. His work often explores a dialogue of change and identity between Native and non-Native communities. Born in Sitka, Alaska, Galanin first learned to work with jewelry and light metals, apprenticing with his father. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Design and Silversmithing at London Guildhall University in England, and a Masters of Fine Arts in indigenous visual arts at Massey University in New Zealand. Being trained in both traditional and contemporary approaches in art, he pursues and merges both, exploring the questions of identity, misinterpretation and cultural appropriation.

Things are Looking Native, Native's Looking Whiter was the centerpiece of "Unsettled," a 2012 exhibit hosted by the Nevada Museum of Art. It is a digital print that bisects and combines two photographs. On the left is a 1906 Edward S. Curtis image entitled "Tewa Girl," a photograph of an unnamed Hopi-Tewa girl with a traditional "squash blossom" or "butterfly whorl" hairstyle. The right half of the photo-montage depicts Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia from the 1977 film Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope with her classic "cinnamon roll" hair style. Galanin's piece is intended as a commentary on cultural appropriation in popular media, which is largely dominated by white actors and directors.

Edward S. Curtis's great body of work, while beautifully executed artistically and doubtlessly valuable, has often been criticized. Curtis presented himself as a scientist as well as the artist, documenting the real Indians of North America in their environment. However, by the time Curtis took his first photograph in the 1890s, the noble savage he presented to the public no longer existed. He has also been known to stage his images to look more Native at the time, for example removing or retouching contemporary items in his photos. Each of the images used for Galanin's art piece represent different aspects of cultural appropriation. One--the desire to depict it in an unchanging, romanticized way as a vanishing race; the other--blatantly reusing a piece of cultural heritage while disposing of all Native elements of it.

Photography Elective: Artists Research

Thomas Friedrich Schaefer

Born 1983, He was raised in Sao Paulo, and Mainz. After finishing high school, he attended university. Initially studying architecture, he changed focus and ultimately completed his Bachelor in Fine Arts in 2014 at the Berliner Technische Kunsthochschule and has since participated in several international shows.

Since moving back to Germany, he has tried to assess his memories and his past within his images. He recently finished a long-term photographic project creating and documenting elaborately staged environments that play on the essence of fragmented childhood memories. The project required him to construct staged rooms using technical skills which he obtained early in his studies while studying architecture and engineering.

I really liked his work and how he captures his childhood memories in his photographs. I want to use his work as inspiration for my photography as I am looking into my journey from childhood to present. These photographs are from a collection titled ‘Experiential Spaces’.

Petra Collins

Photographer, filmmaker, artist, model, and curator Collins influences teenage girl culture as much as she documents it. Since her early contributions to the feminist pop-culture Rookie Mag, Collins has gone on to shoot campaigns for Gucci, release two photo books with her girls-only art collective, and direct music videos. All the while she’s stirred controversy with her Instagram of her unwaxed bikini line and a provocative American Apparel t-shirt collaboration. Collins’s work is both confrontational and empowering. Her un-retouched photos dispel the vintage beauty standard by creating a new one—one that spotlights girls of all sizes and ethnicities, and embraces their vulnerabilities. Collins attended Ontario College of Art and Design for two years to study artistic criticism and curatorial practice.

I really love Collins’ work as i find it very aesthetically pleasing, and i love how she captures and portrays teenage life. I love her use of coloured lighting in her photographs, and how the girls in them look both calm and strong.

Mayan Toledano

The Israeli-born, New York-based artist, designer, and photographer Toledano has crafted an impressive portfolio that depicts the dreamy, glitter-filled, safe space of girlhood. Mayan's work encompasses themes like gender identity, gay culture, the female body, intimacy and relationships and characterised by senses of humanity and empathy. Mayan worked with clients like Kenzo, Nike, Chanel, Gucci, Coach, Pat McGrath, MadeMe and American Eagle. “When I create things I want to make sure when people see it they feel better about themselves," she says. She's always thinking about how to tell stories and connect with the world, whether she's creating sets for her own photographs or for music videos.

Toledano says; “I always feel like I keep going back to the aesthetic of teenage bedrooms and bedrooms in general. The bed is a big place for me. That's where I am creative. Your bedroom is the first place that is your own and private, and it's your first place to be creative. So you put posters on the wall and a photo of your muse or someone you admire or stickers or whatever you're into. And my bedroom was always like that. It inspires me and I feel like there's something really vulnerable about it and really personal.”

I love her portrayal of teen girls and their bedrooms and how beautiful the photographs are. I want to capture my bedroom as part of my project as i spent a lot of my childhood there, and I will be looking to her photography for inspiration.

NENSHA: THE THOUGHTOGRAPHY IN JAPAN

It’s also called “ projected thermography” or “ psychic photography” and it’s the claimed ability to “burn” images from one’s mind onto surfaces such as photographic films by psychic means. “Thoughtography” is the image of objects on the retina of the human eye that might so affect it that that photograph could be produced by looking at a sensitive plate. This term was first introduced by doctor Tomokichi Fukurai in the late 19th century, a period of high interest in spiritualism in Japan. Fukurai was assistant professor of phychology at Tokyo University and he began experimenting with parapsychology with the help of 3 mediums: Chizuko Mifune, Ikuko Nagao and Sadako Takahashi. If these names sound familiar you’re right. they have the names or surnames of the famous character of the movie trilogy The Ring ( or Ringu, in Japanese) based on the novels of Koji Suzuki. Fukurai believed in the paranormal and extrasensory abilities. Chizuko Mifune was born in 1886 in the prefecture of Kumamoto and declared that she had acquired clairvoyance through spiritual exercise and through a particular deep breathing technique. This clairvoyance had been "induced" by her brother-in-law Takeo who was working on research on hypnotism in the city of Kumamoto. The man hypnotized her and induced her to be sleepwalking and asked her to try to ascertain the fate of the soldiers of the Sixth Division. It was the years of the Russian -Japanese war and the Hitachimaru, a warship had been sunk but there was still no news of the Sixth Division, a group of soldiers who had left for the ship to join the crew. Chizuko declared during hypnosis that the soldiers of this group had not died, had failed to reach the ship and had returned to the port of Nagasaki from where they had sailed. So it was: the soldiers were really safe and what the woman said was true. Chizuko, on the advice of her brother-in-law, learned to empty her mind and control breathing in order to obtain visions. She agreed to work with Dr. Fukurai to obtain true recognition of her powers. The girl was only 24 years old and on September 15, 1910 the Doctor decided to attend a public conference so that she could prove her powers to the public, but things did not go well: the dean of the university's psychology faculty, Kenjiro Yamakawa , invited the young woman to read the text of some messages hidden from her sight. When at the end of the test, however, it became known that the real author of the tickets was the doctor and not a stranger, the participants began to suspect that in reality the woman and the doctor had previously agreed on what was written in the notes , creating not a scientific proof of a mental power but a simple fraud. The following year Chizuko takes her own life by ingesting poison, depressed and persecuted by the harsh criticism of those who did not believe in her psychic abilities.

The scene of this test is also found in the film The Ring: Shizuko is interrupted by a man who shouts at the deception and then collapses on the dying ground and the spectators notice the presence of Sadako who looks at everything in the shadows. After the death of Chizuko, Doctor Fukurai continued his research and was mainly interested in nensha, the ability to print images on sheets or film with the power of thought. A specialty of the medium Ikuko Nagao. She also died a year after meeting the doctor. She became ill with fever and also in this case it was said that the stress of being criticized harshly caused the disease. Before her death the doctor was already working with another medium, Sadako Takahashi. Like Chizuko, Sadako had developed her powers by concentrating and perfecting breathing, and by 1911 she began producing nenshs. Examples of nensha were included in the book that Dr. Fukurai published in 1913 under the title "Clairvoyance and Photography of Thought" (Toushi to nensha). Although the book was not well received by the public, the doctor continued to research the paranormal and "psychic" photography throughout his life.

He was hired by Koyasan University and is still considered today as the pioneer of parapsychology in Japan and the founder of the Japanese system of hypnotic psychology. Interest in nensha, known as thoughtography, also took hold in England. Skeptics say that you cannot have a photograph of thought and even professional photographers would say that psychic photographs are artfully created fakes, once negatives were manipulated, today photo retouching allows you to edit photos easily and in a short time . Very often in the past this type of photography was the result of a defect in the camera, lenses or film, or reflections caused by the flash, or sudden chemical reactions during the development of the film and even overlapping.

Note: I found about nensha after re - watching The Ring movie and I think it’s really interesting how the fictional characters were somehow connected to real people.
