With a bolt-action rifle rumored to be in the works for more than a year, Sig Sauer has finally released its first production model: the Cross, designed for hunting and competition. The Cross is the first SIG-built precision bolt-action hunting rifle designed by Sig Sauer engineers, completely manufactured and machined at the company's facilities in New Hampshire. The Cross has been tested by premier competitive shooters, the world’s best long range shooters and a team of professional hunters that the Cross is built for. It is available in 6.5 Creedmoor, 308 WIN, and the soon-to-be-released 277 SIG Fury, with a black anodized or First Lite camo finish. The 277 Fury is a neat surprise announcement from Sig, too, coming as part of its next generation squad weapons development with the U.S. military. Cost? The MSRP is $1,779. “When our product management team and engineers researched developing a bolt-action rifle, they looked at what was missing from the market, and what new innovation SIG could bring to hunters and precision shooters,” said Tom Taylor, Chief Marketing Officer and Executive Vice President, Commercial Sales. “Hunting rifles are typically focused on less weight, and accuracy is secondary," Taylor said. "Precision rifles are designed for extreme accuracy, with no weight limitations. What was missing from the market was a true crossover. Our product management team and engineers took the best of both worlds and developed the Cross, featuring the characteristics of a hunting rifle with the accuracy of a precision rifle.” The Cross is a lightweight precision rifle with a push button, foldable SIG precision stock, one-piece aluminum receiver that eliminates the need for bedding the action, and AI magazines for creating the most accurate precision hunting platform. The Cross features a stainless-steel rifled barrel with a free-float M-LOK handguard, 2-stage match-grade trigger externally adjustable from 2.5 – 4 pounds, ambi-safety, a three-lug bolt design with a 60-degree throw and interchangeable bolt handle. The precision stock is spring-loaded for one handed operation and can be fully adjusted in the field for length of pull and comb height with no tools. With flush magazines the G3 is still small enough to carry concealed with an inside-the-waistband holster. Dimension-wise the G3 is in-line with many popular service pistols. It’s just under 7.3 inches long and 5.2 inches tall not using extended magazines. It’s 1.2 inches wide at the widest. The gun has an unloaded weight of just under 25 ounces. With extended magazines the G3 has a slightly longer grip which can help people with larger hands but the real benefit is the added capacity. The grip has generous texturing with molded stippling on all sides and along the front- and backstrap, and the frame is relieved with thumb grooves and index finger “memory pads” above the trigger guard.

Instead of the scallops forward of the ejection port on the G2, the G3 has deep front serrations to match the rear slide serrations. The trigger is rated to have a 6-pound pull with a brief takeup, a clean break and a short reset. Unlike many striker-fired designs, the G3 is built with a trigger that can fully cock the striker which gives shooters the option for a second strike if they run into a bad primer. Of course, Taurus’ main selling point of the G3 is price. Like the G2 the G3 is very affordable with a suggested price of just $345. Pricing online and in stores will probably be around $300 or under.
